Kerry: Syrian Opposition Mostly Moderates.
Reality: No They Aren't

— DrewM

I guess it depends on the meaning of "moderate".

At congressional hearings this week, while making the case for President Barack Obama's plan for limited military action in Syria, Kerry asserted that the armed opposition to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad "has increasingly become more defined by its moderation, more defined by the breadth of its membership, and more defined by its adherence to some, you know, democratic process and to an all-inclusive, minority-protecting constitution.

"And the opposition is getting stronger by the day," Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday.

...

A European security official with experience in the region said that extremist rebel factions were so strong and well-organized in the north and west of Syria that they were setting up their own public services and trying to create an Islamic ministate along the Iraqi border.

By contrast, the official said, more moderate rebel factions predominate in the east of Syria and along its southern border with Jordan but have largely devolved into "gangs" whose leaders are more interested in operating local rackets and enriching themselves than in forming a larger alliance that could more effectively oppose Assad's government.

"I've heard that there are moderate groups out there we could, in theory, support," said Joshua Foust, a former U.S. intelligence analyst who now writes about foreign policy.

"But I've heard from those same people and my own contacts within (U.S. intelligence) that the scary people are displacing more and more moderate groups. Basically, the jihadists are setting up governance and community councils while the moderates exhaust themselves doing the heavy fighting," Foust said.

I just hope whoever in the US government is vetting the opposition aren't the same people who vetted the local Benghazi militias that were supposed to be providing security on the night of September 11, 2012.

Meanwhile, the two whip counts as they stand today.

39 Syria action brought to you by the team that couldn't even get FEST spun up during the Benghazi attacks. ****** Foreign Emergency Support Team (FEST) The Foreign Emergency Support Team is the United States Government's only interagency, on-call, short-notice team poised to respond to terrorist incidents worldwide. Led and trained by the Operations Directorate of the Office of the Coordinator for Counterterrorism, it assists U.S. missions and host governments in responding quickly and effectively to terrorist attacks. The FEST, which has deployed to over 20 countries since its inception in 1986, leaves for an incident site within four hours of notification, providing the fastest assistance possible. The FEST provides round-the-clock advice and assistance to Ambassadors and foreign governments facing crisis. The Team is comprised of seasoned experts from the Department of State, FBI, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, and the Intelligence Community. Once on the scene, FEST members help Ambassadors assess the emergency, advise on how best to respond, and assist in managing consequent operations. FEST provides: Seasoned crisis management expertise Time-sensitive information and intelligence Planning for contingency operations Hostage negotiating expertise Reach-back to Washington agencies FEST Assists in the Aftermath of East Africa Bombings Two Foreign Emergency Support Teams were deployed to Kenya and Tanzania immediately following the August 1998 al-Qaeda terrorist bombings of US Embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam. The FESTs helped assess both emergencies and aided US Ambassadors as they managed the aftermath of the attacks, which killed some 300 (including 12 Americans) and injured more than 5000. FEST Responds to USS Cole Bombing A Foreign Emergency Support Team was deployed to Aden, Yemen following a terrorist attack against the USS Cole, which killed 17 American sailors in October 2000. The FEST advised the US ambassador and helped her direct America's response to the attack. FEST's secure mobile communications capability was especially valuable, since the Port of Aden is some 200 miles from the American Embassy in Sanaa. http://2001-2009.state.gov/s/ct/about/c16664.htm

"But I've heard from those same people and my own contacts within (U.S. intelligence) that the scary people are displacing more and more moderate groups."

So, if we had acted quickly, with arms and support, we might have given the moderate groups a leg up. But that train has left the station: I guess that's what passes for smart diplomacy these days.

62 Even if Obama backs down this time, which I'm skeptical he will, America will eventually bomb Syria. Assad is now the new face of Middle East evil. After Saddam, Q-Daffy, Bin Laden, etc, were all killed, I wondered how quickly a new face would pop up to become the face of the mideast enemy. Didn't take long for Assad to become that guy. This war build-up, even if Obama backs down, is a huge PR campaign cementing Assad as a super-villain. Nobody is arguing he isn't evil. Maybe Assad will be like Q-Daffy, and survive another decade or two. But once you officially get on America's shit list then eventually some President is probably gonna take you out.

One merely has to google "syrian rebels execute 7 soldiers" to find this. Perhaps your former colleague Albert Gore, Jr. can help you with that new fangled internet thingie. 127 Look at the maps some of the better strategic warfare assessment organizations have constructed.

Well before this incident they've predicted that extremists have control of large swaths of the country alleged to be under "rebel" control.

The terrorist organizations have very well seasoned fighter whose experience and brutality has helped with their gains. They also have significant influence over other indigenous fighters who adopt their methods and tactics.

Given that assessment, this was an easy "bull" call.

Ultimately, we have very little idea who these people are. See Libya or perhaps who this administration supported in Egypt. Hint on the latter- they are now mostly in prison.

170 I wanted to post this from the dead thread on Hemingway, because he really was an ass and everyone should know. Life photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt went to Cuba in 1952 to photograph Hemingway. "Hemingway, Eisenstaedt wonderingly noted, drank from the moment he awoke until the time he went to bed, with a lackey constantly plying him with booze; obsessed over his virility (sometimes literally pounding his chest, “like King Kong,” to illustrate that, while perhaps diminished, he was still a man to whom attention must be paid); erupted into violent rages over minor slights, both real and imagined; rarely spoke a sentence, to anyone, that wasn’t peppered with obscenities; and generally behaved like a buffoon. Words and phrases that crop up repeatedly in Eisenstaedt’s reminiscences include “crazy,” “berserk,” “wild,” “insulting,” “drunk,” and “blue in the face” (as in, blue in the face with sudden, uncontrollable anger)." You're talking about an ideal world, one based on reason, fact, evidence, and the rule of law. Unfortunately, we live in the real world, so let's stay in the real world and play it out, game the consequences and ramifications of that course of action--impeachment, I mean. Impeaching the first black President would tear the country apart to no good purpose, especially since the Senate would never vote to convict. President Obama is, for all intents and purposes, impervious to any constitutional remedy. He can overreach all he likes, do whatever he likes, and do it all without consequence. We've seen it.

My guess? The House will vote against Syrian intervention and a poison gas attack in Syria will immediately follow. Someone very badly wants us engaged there--who knows who?  and another gas attack will almost certainly sway the House to change its mind.

275 RussiaÂ’s Gazprom, Israeli Group Ink Gas Deal By The Economist Intelligence Unit - Fri 01 Mar 2013 15:12:33 CT Related Keywords: Energy Share on email Share on print Share on facebook Share on twitter Share on linkedin Russian energy producer Gazprom OAO signed a letter of intent on February 26 to buy natural gas from the Tamar field, located off the coast of Israel, to export to Asia through a liquefied natural-gas terminal. Gazprom has said that it is in exclusive discussions with the operators of Israel's Tamar and Dalit fields (the smaller of the recently discovered gas fields off the coast of northern Israel) to purchase LNG for export to Asian markets. Tamar is operated by a consortium of U.S.-based Noble Energy and the Israeli firms Delek, Alon and Isramco. They have already signed an agreement with a South Korean firm, Daewoo, for the construction and operation of a floating LNG terminal. The gas would be exported from an floating LNG terminal that would store, process and ready for shipment the gas at a rate of 4.2 billion cubic meter a year, or 84 billion cubic meters over the 20-year span of the proposed contract. This would represent about 30% of Tamar's 274 billion cubic meters of proven reserves to date. Exports would begin from 2017, as it will be some time before the floating terminal will be ready (the fields will begin supplying domestic buyers in April). An Australian firm, Woodside, has already expressed interest in a 30% stake in the output of the larger Leviathan field. Leviathan (owned by Noble, Delek and Ratio), which has estimated reserves of 453 billion cubic meters, is not expected to begin production until 2016. The Israeli government has sought to strike a balance between trying to ensure security of domestic supply and allowing the private operators of these fields to sell the gas abroad at higher prices, and thus also generate higher royalty payments for the government. The private operators have fought restrictions on their export activities. With Israel lacking a government following its January elections, it is not known when the recommendations of the government's Tzemach committee, first published in August 2012, will be adopted. The Tzemach committee recommended letting at least 50% of production be exported as long as 450 billion cubic meters could be set aside over 25 years for domestic consumption. The new government may seek modest adjustments to the proposals but is unlikely to block the gas field developers from selling a significant proportion of their output abroad. It's just a business deal, let's not make to much out of it. It's good business for both parties

This is so easy.

Normally we should entertain the thought of going after Assad because he's a Bad Man.

BUT, his opposition is made up of Bad Men.

BUT MOSTLY, Obama is a Bad Man.  He has done all the things Assad would do to his political opposition given the constraints he works under.  And if he had the power Assad has he would do as much - as a friend of someone who thought that 25 Million Americans would necessarily die in order to bring about their visionary utopian society.

The answer is NO INTERVENTION.

Having Libya go to the Islamists along with the deaths of four persons:  OBAMA FAIL.

Having the UN and the UK nix action in Syria: OBAMA FAIL

Having Egypt turn into a confused state on the brink  of civil war:  OBAMA FAIL

The Russian Reset and the pullback of missile defense from the Czechs and the Poles:  OBAMA FAIL

327 People seem to be under the impression the choice is between doing nothing and full-scale invasion for regime change.

Either would be a huge mistake.  We want an ongoing war of attrition because most of the fighters on both sides are our enemies, the Iran-linked Shi'ites fighting with Assad's Alawite minority against the Sunni al Qaeda types.  But if we do nothing, Assad will gain the upper hand before long - using more WMD if he needs to.

We can hurt Assad and degrade his strength, and possibly also take out the main production and storage facilities for his WMD, without deposing him, without a major invasion (spotter teams may need to be on the ground to paint targets).  That's what we should do, and Obama doesn't need some major blank check AUMF to do it.
