Kerry's At House Foreign Affairs Committee
— DrewM

Live now on CSPAN (live stream here).

Should be fun to watch him explain how it's their fault Obama is in this mess and how it's their credibility on the line.

kerryobama.png

Yes Mr. President, I'll let them know how disappointed in them you are

Thanks to John E. for the photo.

Meanwhile, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee is supposed to be marking up the resolution. It doesn't seem like it's going well. John "Jack High" McCain wants it to be tougher.

One other note...heck of a job by Boehner and Cantor yesterday. Instead of waiting for Obama to make his case they came right out and supported him. In thanks, Obama blamed Congress for putting the country in this position. They are so afraid of being called bad names they simply cave for no reason and get smacked around anyway for their efforts

I understand your point, and think you are being reasonable and thoughtful. However, I also understand the concepts of sunk costs, good money after bad, cutting your losses, know when to fold 'em, etc., and so conclude that you are wrong on this one.

40 We all know this is going to happen. Why the fuck don't they? Seriously, it's two things. One is a form of battered wife syndrome (yes, I believe this). They really think it's *their fault* that Obama pisses on them. Second is, as I've been saying for a while, every time they back down it becomes harder for them to stand their ground the next time. Acquiescence becomes a habit that is very, very hard to break. Obama (or his handlers) knew this from the beginning- the rush to pass Porkulus was simply the first step in crafting a Congress which would bend to his every whim.

Frankenkerry senses opportunity, goads BO into doing something he can later say he worked against behind the scenes, but instead acted to maintain the credibility yadda yadda. 5.) 119 There is this: Putin has climbed back a little bit--also the Russian public is very against his involvement. Russia remains firmly opposed, with President Vladimir Putin warning on Wednesday that any strike without UN approval would be "an aggression". But Mr Putin said Russia did not rule out supporting a UN Security Council resolution authorising force, if it was proved "beyond doubt" that the Syrian government had used chemical weapons. He said it was "too early" to talk about what Russia would do if America took action without a UN resolution. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-23962304 But again the diplomacy on this by the Obama Administration has been abysmal. The Obama Administration cancelled an emergency meeting with the Russians at the last minute--inspiring the now infamous remark by the Russian deputy minister.

From the tone of his rhetoric (obviously only in print, and that translated, so I could be missing something) I don't think Putin wants to do anything. I think he really wants this whole thing to blow over- which it would do if we would let it. That said, Syria is an ally of Russia, as is Iran (even if only on the DL). Someone pointed out that there are a lot of Russian citizens who live in Syria as well- which sounds f*cked up to me, but whatever. If TFG launches missiles on Syria, Russia may feel it has no option but to respond. One completely feasible option I've considered is US ships launching cruise missiles, and Russian ships (which are moving into the area) trying to shoot those missiles down, thus beginning the escalation into WW3.

It is amazing how it is always someone else's fault.

My grandmother, that veritable font of wisdom, once told me that    if I had a problem with somebody, she could believe it was the other person's fault.  If I had a couple of people that I had a problem with, it was doubtful that I was entirely blameless, and if I had a problem with everybody, it   was certainly my fault.

234 Everybody in the parade is out of step but me. (sort of) funny story. In marching band in HS, I played the Tuba (we used actual marching tubas, not sousaphones). At one point in one of our marching routines, the Tubas were supposed to cross through the line of the color guard- At 2-steps-per-yard-line. Backwards. (Yes, it was fun). So this one girl in the color guard (not coincidentally the daughter of our band director) kept getting in our way. And she'd yell and say we were in the wrong spot, yadda yadda. Finally, our section leader told her, "Look, we're moving backwards at 2 steps to 5 yards. We're not looking for you. You can move out of the way, or we can run you over." We only had to run her over once for her to get the point.

You want appropriate to the moment, try this: http://tinyurl.com/k9gfjds, where it shows actor Sam Elliot playing General Buford at Gettysburg. Skip to 3:32, the part where Buford starts talking about taking part in a failed attack, knowing it will fail.

Intervention in the Syrian civil war will be a disaster. Most of us can see it coming. With Boehner and Cantor supporting the President, I think it's likely Republicans in the House will fall dutifully in line. After that, things play out the way they play out--which is to say, badly.

Credibility? Sorry, that died in November 2012, when we re-elected an ignorant, arrogant fool as president.

But now that I think about it, here's a possible solution that anyone claiming "humanitarian" reasons can agree on: (not that they will, since their true objective is weakening US influence, but anyway) Instead of any kind of military action, we wave the noncombatant flag, evacuate women/children/eldery/noncombatants out of the country, then seal the borders and let both sides go at it. Either they'll slaughter each other or run out of ammo. (No, Russia and China, you will not be running guns there. Go fight each other over North Korea) THEN we bomb to clear out the ones still standing, and send in a cleanup crew after that. Problem solved!
