Kevin Williamson on "The Age of Envy"
— Ace

Very good piece knocking Robert Reich's recent article (meet the old article, same as the old article) decrying a tax code which permits the wealthy tax deductions for charitable donations.

It's worth reading in full. But here's some of it. I'm digesting the key points made for people who want a shorter version, but seriously, just read the whole thing.

Professor Reich, a ward of the taxpayers of California (at $246,199.84 per annum) and a federal ward before that, is persistently unhappy about how other people use their money, and he scoffs that America’s rich philanthropists are phony and self-serving, investing too much in opera and ballet and fancy colleges, and too little in feeding the hungry and housing the homeless. He particularly resents the fact that our tax code encourages such giving, with deductions that reduced federal revenue by some $39 billion last year — federal revenue that could have gone toward employing men such as Robert Reich.

Reich is very upset that the lion's share of the $39 billion in tax deductions go to the wealthy. But who else would they go to? The wealthy give away larger sums of money.

While he notes the $39 billion in tax deductions, he doesn't tell the reader how much they give away to get that $39 billion in tax deductions: $316 billion.

Our innumerate class warriors dismiss philanthropy as a complicated tax dodge for the rich, but in fact tax deductions amount to about 12 percent of total charitable donations, meaning that our wily robber barons have figured out a way of beating the taxman by . . . giving away far more money than they receive in related tax benefits. Even if Professor Reich got his way on tax rates and they went up to 90 percent at the top, you still donÂ’t come out ahead by giving away money.

He next attacks Reich's claim that too much of this charitable giving is to tony cultural charities -- orchestras, ballets, theaters, and other such cult artifacts of the privileged classes, rather than towards feeding and housing the poor.

Williamson crunches the numbers and discovers how much is "too much" in contributions towards cultural affairs, in Reich's eyes-- it works out to be 4.5% of charitable giving.

Giving to art-and-culture organizations amounted to just over $14 billion in 2012, or about 4.5 percent of charitable contributions, far less than was given to health, human-services, or public-benefit organizations. There are a fair number of single organizations that run into the billions per year, including YMCA ($6.24 billion), Goodwill Industries ($5 billion), Catholic Charities ($4.4 billion), and the Red Cross ($3.12 billion).

But is $14 billion of private charitable giving towards high-class cultural concerns a waste of money? Williamson wonders what Reich would say about government spending on these very same concerns.

A question, though: If spending on art, music, and culture is self-serving when private citizens do it, what is it when government does it? Essential, necessary, crucial — of course....

Try cutting a piece of that and youÂ’ll hear howls about how vital every farthing spent in the service of culture is.

And why the contradiction? Because what Reich really objects to is that billions of dollars of wealth are being redistributed... but they're being voluntarily distributed by people who aren't under his control. He doesn't have a piece of the action, you see.

He wants this sort of spending under government control, because he wants to feel virtuous in directing the spending of other people's money for charity.

Prayerful people bargaining with God over lottery numbers no doubt imagine that they would do some worthy things with that money, on top of buying a Ferrari. Progressives imagine all the wonderful things they could do with other peopleÂ’s money, and no doubt some of them are well-intentioned. But envy poisons whatever good intentions they have, which is how men such as Professor Reich come to write resentful indictments of people who are, remember, giving away billions of dollars of their own money. HeÂ’d prefer their money be given away by him, or by bureaucracies under the tutelage of men such as himself.

It's this point that chafes people like Reich. The progressive mindset is an ego-pleasing delusion, a fantasia which assures the progressive that He is the Hero.

He fights for the Poor (the MacGuffins). He is heroically offended by those who aren't doing their share for Poor. By writing articles about the Poor, and by being fashionably outraged by those who aren't sufficiently outraged by poverty themselves, he imagines himself as a Soldier on the battlefield of morality.

But notice, of course, he's not giving away his own money. He's not, like a Soldier, making actual sacrifices.

No, he has decided that his contribution to the cause will be in the form of articles and White Papers and manifestos. The Soldiers-- the grunts -- will do the actual fighting. But he and other members of the New Class will do the truly important work of Bossing the Soldiers About.

And that's the only way he gets a little slice of the Virtue Pie. There are Virtuous Things being done, but Reich isn't actually doing them. And yet he wishes to conceive of himself as Virtuous; as Astonishingly Virtuous, in fact. But how can he so conceive of himself if he's not actually doing any of the Virtuous heavy lifting?

Well, he'll be the guy who properly directs the heavy lifting, like that guy who says he'll help you move a couch, but then plops himself down in a big comfy chair and just tells other people to "Lift with their legs" and "Be careful of the doorway" and "Watch it, you're going to scuff the wall with the couch's leg."

That's his job. That's the job he's assigned himself. Not to be the actual Doer of Virtue, but to be instead the even more important Public Director of Virtuous Deeds.

Private charitable giving is threat to his job as Public Director of Virtuous Deeds, as he can't even contrive a fictional narrative in which he's somehow a key player in other people's private voluntary giving. He can only contrive that ego-plumping narrative if he and his class are somehow involved in directing charity traffic.

And thus it is that Robert Reich, while living handsomely on the public's dime, can fulminate at the public for not doing its share of all these Important Things.

Thanks to @rdbrewer4.

4 The danger of Reich's argument is that it holds sway with those not paying attention. This (to trot out one of Breitbart's themes) is where we have to engage in the culture and fight this battle. "Tax the rich, feed the poor, 'til there are, rich no more" is not the way to go.

12 Reich's argument, and the left's basic argument, about how bad it is to have income inequality or whatever the meme of the day is, reeks of sibling rivalry, not equality.

They always quote the Bible when they tout socialism; read about Cain and Abel to see how well sibling rivalry ends.

15 Last Halloween season I was at a party with Robert Reich (seriously). Not a Halloween-style party -- it just happened to be October. First observation: You think he's merely "short"? Wrong. He's shorter than you imagine. He's basically a dwarf. Second observation: He is treated like a deity or a guru by everyone around him. He does not ever hear opposing viewpoints in person. Third observation: He is extremely accustomed to being treated like a deity. He is used to it. He takes offense at being treated the way normal people are treated. My only conversation with him revolved around wine, and involved other people, so I have no other insights. Sorry.

Art is a particularly bad thing for the government to spend money on. Since the members of the governing class giving out the money are radically different culturally from the members of the productive, and even the dependent, classes their taste in art is mostly worthless to the country as a whole.

And worse yet, it crowds out art that would be popular to a larger population since the government pays well, and pays for more consistently then the private sector does.

There was a long NPR piece on this last week.  Charitable giving annoys nannyists for all the reasons cited above.  There is an additional benefit to private philanthropy: when a program doesn't work the donors stop funding it and fund something else instead.

Reich and other liberals are upset at three things:

1. The charitable donor decides who gets the donation, and we can't trust individuals   to give to the 'proper' causes.

2. If the federal government was in charge of      distributing all of these funds, there would be hundreds of     job    openings for liberals to siphon off not only paychecks, but kickbacks.

3.  If the charitable deduction were    eliminated, it would theoretically increase the   taxes    paid by the rich (actually upper middle class), and whether it did or not, inflicting pain on this class is the only pleasure worth having.

If the right was more confrontational I think challenging the left, incessantly, on their inherent hypocrisy could be very effective.

Imagine if every time a wealthy liberal talking head went on about income inequality his opposite number demanded to know how what percentage of his income said liberal was giving to charity...and just keep at it.

One way to think about it, is that all of these people like Reich are the equivalent to a pro-lifer who knocked up his girlfriend and made her have an abortion. What he is doing in keeping his wealth is repugnant according to his own *stated* morality.

68 This quote struck me: "There is no envy like the envy of a $250,000 man in a world of $250 million men." Mostly because that describes Obama to a "T". When he was a small child in Indonesia, he didn't speak the language, so he hung out the the kids of American workers. Workers who were paid a huge sum to relocate to Indonesia. His step-father, while well-paid by Indonesian standards was not in that rarefied air. And Obama, thanks to his commie family, was taught to resent. When he returned to Hawaii, he was sent to the most expensive private school west of the Mississippi. There he hob-nobbed with the elite of Honolulu. Kids who could manage a little blow now and then. His friends were rich, the girls were rich and, despite the fact that he was being raised by a bank VP, he didn't have a lot of money to throw around. When he went to college, he landed at Occidental in Los Angeles. Especially at that time, Oxy was the kind of place for kids with more money than brains. It wasn't a serious academic environment and Obama didn't do well in it. He didn't have to. And he was surrounded by trust-funders. Then, for some reason, he's able to transfer to Columbia. This accomplishment is still not clear, given that bad grades at Oxy wouldn't recommend you for transfer to an Ivy, even Columbia. Nonetheless, he's there in Columbia which has an impressive faculty and a ton of rich NYC kids or rich kids who want to live in NYC. That's a rich tradition that has continued to this day (see McCain, Meghan). And, of course, Harvard Law. Again, at the time this was far more of a culture of wealth and privilege than it is today (and make no mistake, if the kids from Duck Dynasty were smart, there wouldn't be a place at Harvard for them anyway). Even as a politician, Obama's got to do his thing for the rich donors and the wealthy Chicago political elite. He's always been the $250,000 man -- a 1%er all of his life -- among $250 million men. Until he got elected to the Senate. He still wasn't a millionaire, but his wife got a big fat raise.

73 Matthew 6:2 "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full." Reich doesn't even rise to the level of hypocrites. He isn't actually giving money. He's blowing trumpets, but not doing the actual charity.

77 The Bible says the giver should decide.

Six days before the Passover, Jesus came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. Here a dinner was given in Jesus’ honor. Martha served, while Lazarus was among those reclining at the table with him. Then Mary took about a pint of pure nard, an expensive perfume; she poured it on Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her hair. And the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray him, objected, “Why wasn’t this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year’s wages.” He did not say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it. “Leave her alone,” Jesus replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of my burial. You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.”

96 Bill Gates puts money into a 'foundation' that defers his taxes, and yet he still gets to exercise his own control issues by pushing things like Common Core. The rich will shelter their money and game the system anyway they can, just like the poor will game the system. But Reich's position is really about his OWN power-lust.

98 huerfano@79, the import line here is: This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. This is what the bible says forced giving leads to: corruption. Judas, who held the purse, did not want Mary to give to the poor; Judas wanted her to give to him. Which is what Reich wants as well. ItÂ’s a more complicated scam but thatÂ’s still where his money comes from.

172 If that were true, liberals would give more of their time, money and blood to others than conservatives.

No, see, it's like this- if you give a man $20, you feed him for a day.  If you force everybody else to each give him $20, you feed him for a lifetime.

So why bother giving him $20 when you're advocating for so much more out of being so very publicly caring?

179 I oppose most of the charitable giving as it's structured today. The truly wealthy establish foundations that are required to give 5% of their assets per year. Broad (and sometimes narrow) guidelines are drawn up that suppose to channel the money to charities and causes important to the giver, but within a generation most foundations can be found financing people and organizations that would make the giver spin in his grave. I'm far more in favor of concentrated wealth and inheritance, used to do things impossible to do with corporate funds. Let Bill Gates' kids build a trans-Pacific vacuum tube or buy Detroit and turn it into something. Succeed or fail, at least it would be bold. Foundations don't care about anything but perpetuating themselves and their worthless, incestuous giving. Fuck them.

You don't "need" that much money.  It is a "waste" for any one person to have that much money.

They simply do not understand that if everyone made the same government mandated salary, we would have nothing.. or next to nothing.. like the Soviet era Russian grocery stores where bread sold out in the first 5 minutes of the day and there were empty shelves the rest.

You tell them that, however, and they respond..  "oh no.. we'll do it right this time!"  Uh huh..  call me skeptical!

A small industry, that might not be there if not for the benevolence of a few. When politicians want to take from the many to 'support the arts' I get upset. That the wealthy get a tax deduction to fund a small industry, create jobs, and provide a benefit to many? Not on my give-a-shit platter.

Off, damned meme sock.

If the Left wants income-parity, how about wealth-parity? The price for a home should be fixed, nation-wide, at a standard rate per square foot.

259 Exactly. I don't know if they want to do that here, but they'd be risking that outcome.

Absolutely they do.

They believe that they- through government- would spend your money far more wisely than you spend your money.

They'd love to see charitable organizations be folded into the government, with voluntary donations replaced by mandatory tax dollars.

If the Red Cross (for example) goes in and helps a bunch of people after a flood, what do they (liberals) get out of it?

They don't get to take political credit, they don't unionized government workers to replace volunteers, they don't get the power to decide where the money is spent.

279 When the financial records of wealthy leftists are disclosed, they usually show a lower percentage of charitable giving than the average working family.  People like Reich have always been better at giving away other people's money.

It's true he wants control over the donations, whether to cultural activities or human needs, which is a function of power, but he also craves the credit.  Reich has a fanatical need to be seen as morally superior by others in the way he sees himself.

He may be the only man ever in Washington who had to look up to Tom Daschle, but when he sees his reflection in the mirror, he sees a mighty big man.

287 The philosophical difference was aptly demonstrated in a video posted here a few weeks back.

If I see a hungry man and decide to give him half of my sandwich, that is a moral decision, a charitable one, and the recipient will likely be grateful.

If the government forces me to give the man half of my sandwich at gunpoint, two things happen, one, the decision becomes immoral and uncharitable, and two, the recipient of the gift now feels entitled to half of my sandwich, and half of all of my future sandwiches.

I thought about but it was so outrageous I thought it was either a test from God or Candid Camera.    I did do that to another guy who came up to me at a gas station crying the blues.   I got tired of giving money away that I knew would be used for booze or whatnot, that I started carrying McDonald dollar coupons in my car.   I gave the guy a couple and he looked at them like , WTF I don't want this shit and started to walk away with them.   I caught up to him and took them out of his hand and told him to move the fuck on,  after he gave me a dirty look.   No surprise I saw him doing the same thing at another location a few weeks later.

335 What do liberals actually want?  I mean if a Robert Reich really had his way, what would the actual tax rates be?  Why can't they just give us a real number instead of always "not enough"?

Right now, someone who makes over $500k and lives in a blue state pays over 50% in taxes.  You would think at some point, there would be a moral question from lefties about when do taxes become excessive and when do we start looking at HOW that money is spent instead of just figuring out where to get more of it.

I do think one big mistake that we conservatives painted ourselves in a corner is with middle class tax cuts.  The 47% that pay zero federal income taxes are a big boost to this idiotic way of thinking that if we just soak the rich a little more, the math will work.

@162 I'm pretty sure that for whatever reason, Mr. Romney will remain a generous man either way

----------------

Romney gives away such an insanely large amount of his income that there really shouldn't be any question about this.  In addition, in the returns he released in 2012, he ended up *not* taking a fairly sizeable chunk of the deductions available simply because he'd publicly stated earlier that he would be paying a certain amount of his income as taxes, and the deduction would have brought him in well under that.

.... so ...... I find this lamp, rub it, and some Genie wants to grant me a wish.

Naturally.... I respond "I'd like my dick to be one foot from the ground".

338 Reich had a bone disease as a child and that is why he is short. I remember this from Mother Jones back in 1995ish. MoJo was trying to gin up a meme that the Gingrich Republicans and Limbaugh were "bullies"; to this end they recruited Molly Ivins and similar creatures (often perpetrators of Krokodil-wit themselves). The meme didn't take; I think even Democrats told MoJo that they didn't want to look like Limbaugh's little gimps.

339 I'll bet Reich played shortstop on his Little League team.

Catcher.

Third base.  Not the position.  The actual base itself.

340 Romney was derided as Rob Me by the wonderful leftists in America while Obama, a man with no documented acts of altruism or charity in his background, was the compassionate one.

341 I give a shit that Reich is vertically challenged; it's his smallness of character that irks me.

342 "Well, he'll be the guy who properly directs the heavy lifting, like that guy who says he'll help you move a couch, but then plops himself down in a big comfy chair and just tells other people to "Lift with their legs" and "Be careful of the doorway" and "Watch it, you're going to scuff the wall with the couch's leg." That's his job. That's the job he's assigned himself. Not to be the actual Doer of Virtue, but to be instead the even more important Public Director of Virtuous Deeds." There is a famous Chinese communist political cartoon that features a stuck wagon, with workers, peasants, etc. all helping push it. It also shows a party official who's hand is outstretched as if to help push the wagon, but not actually pushing it. This was actually a subtle criticism of communism by the cartoonist - who had to slip that in carefully. I saw this cartoon in a PoliSci class taught by Susan Shirk...but I could never find it via google, etc. It was a great cartoon.

347 Bobby "short but tyrannical" Reich is the guy who wanted to be sure at the passage and execution of the approx. $840 billion 2009 worthless "stimulus" that no WHITE construction workers were hired to do work under its provisions.

That's ok, Bobby.  No one got meaningfully hired under that wasteful boondoggle.
