Koch Brothers Interested in Buying LA Times?
— Ace

Interesting. Via the Hollywood Reporter:

The Kochs, who some sources say are interested in the clout they could gain through the Times' editorial pages, could bid on their own or combine in a bid with Doug Manchester, the San Diego real estate magnate who bought the San Diego Union-Tribune in November 2011.

I'd be less interested in their editorials than in their insistence on actual balanced coverage -- negative stories about both Republicans and Democrats, with equal resources and attention to both; what a concept.

If they buy this thing, I'd suggest they ask Mickey Kaus and Patrick Frey for some critiques of the paper as it currently stands. Kaus has a number of non-political complaints about the paper, chiefly, if I remember, that it's boring, and apparently deliberately so, and seems aloof to the city's number one industry, entertainment. Which is crazy -- not only are entertainment stories more interesting than people care to admit, but in the case of the Los Angeles Times, they should be the paper's beat. It's like the Wall Street Journal deciding they find economic & market news so beneath them.

Every newspaper smuggles entertainment stories into the news to drive sales. The Los Angeles Times is the only big paper with a justification for doing so.

Speaking of conservative entries into the media, the Herring broadcasting company is planning a cable news channel to compete with Fox.

One America News Network will provide Americans a new, credible source for national and international news and investigative reporting as well as talk shows designed to foster an independent, cutting-edge debate about the policies, issues and solutions facing the country,” CEO Robert Herring Sr. said in an announcement on the Washington Times website.

And Glenn Beck would like you to call up your local cable station and ask them to carry Blaze TV.

After all, if you are a cable subscriber, your money is already bankrolling MSNBC, CNN, NBC, ABC, CBS a host of other foreign news and overwhelmingly number Leftist leaning "information" channels. And as of July, you will be helping to pay the salaries of Al Jazeera TV. (Al Gore recently sold his Current TV to Al Jazeera for an amazing sum of money- considering the low viewing audience they have).

Now- Beck has put out a call to all journalists and bloggers to "Link Arms"- and to share information with one another -in order to get news and information out to wider and broader audiences- outside the mainstream media.

Sounds about right.

49 I would love to see this.  I live in LA and cancelled an LA Times subscription long ago so I just get the WSJ now.  The entire issue with the LA Times is that they have delusions of grandeur and consider themselves a massively important national newspaper instead of just a local newspaper with a massive user base.  I'm in the tech community in LA and have many, many friends that have tried for 10 or 15 years to get the Times to cover the LA tech scene and they never do it.  They have always turned up their noses at it as a mere "local story".

I don't see the LA Times as a particularly good investment or something that would bring a great deal of prestige to the message.  TV and radio are where the right gains credibility for their internet operations, so that's where the money should go.

99 It's owned by Tribune Co. But is it its own company? My understanding is very, very sketchy, but as far as I know there are two ways to do a hostile take over. One- Publicly Traded Company Only: Buy up as much of the stock as you possibly can, and start using your weight in board meetings. Two- Public or Private Company: Buy up as much of the debt as you can, then start calling in the debts. In either case, the company has to be its "own" company, even if some other corporation owns it.

No more reality shows.  No more commercials.  No more shopping channels.  News is worthless, nothing they've said there I didn't already know at least 10 hours prior online.

$39/year for Amazon Prime (I'm a professor neener neener!)
$15? $17/mo for Netflix

About a $100 reduction on my DirecTV bill and **no more freaking commercials!**

Most shows you want to watch you can just hook your laptop up to the 737" LCD via HDMI and just go to their side (Downton Abbey bitches!) for free.

Now I'm in the middle of season 1 of Sons of Anarchy (which I missed) so excuse me.

Actually, California has said "No" twice.

The first time California said No, the peoples' will stood for a little while until the highest California court basically said, "The fact that you created Civil Unions means that blocking Same Sex Marriage is a violation of the state constitution."  So Californians said "Our constitution now defines marriage as between a man and a woman."  And then a rather blatantly biased federal judge said, "You're violating the US Constitution."

It's a much better route to buy something like the LA Times. And keep it more or less the same with just a slowly changing political bent. If they come out swinging from day 1 and rebrand the LA Times as the LA CONSERVATIVE TIMES, only conservatives will read it.

CBS never advertizes itself as liberal. It's officially a center of the road, non-ideological network. That's what a Koch owned LA Times has to be as well. Mainstream, centrist, no agenda.....except with a center right agenda.

187 My apologies for the hobby horse that follows-- I understand Argentina's Kirchner asked the Pope to intervene over the Falklands. I could certainly understand the Church's desire to go back to old familiar ground--having a Spanish-speaking government that officially recognizes and supports the Roman Catholic church go take over non-Cathoilc lands simply because the residents of that Catholic nation believe they have a right to--but I would suggest the Church might want to refrain. Or at least, this time could the Jesuits not hack off the hands of the pagans as they try to convert the coquered populace? My Offensive comment of the day: Of course, there are probably a lot of young and virginal Kelper boys priests could sodomize in Stanley, so taking over the islands has that going for it.

I said: No they didn't, they published a poll saying he would lose and here is the link to it.

That's combative.

OK, so what is the correct response? Hey I know you are making shit up. But I'll agree with you anyway. DEATH TO THE LA TIMES!!!!!!

192 OT, but Mia Love is on a local radio show right now. Is interested in running for Matheson's seat again, has now hired a Hatch strategist Dave Hanson to advise her, will run her campaign if she does. Started last time with no money, no name recognition, and ended up only 768 votes behind the Matheson machine. Says learned needs to start early, not begin from behind, if she is to have a chance. Learned the importance of GOTV Efforts and not relying on the names at the top of the ticket (ie Romney) to drive voters to the polls. Get people more engaged. Hope she does it!

201 LA Times hardly speaks for the GOP, anyway. Looks like the "grumpy old men" of the GOP are digging in their ideological heels by stating their party's only problem is "a communications issue". (Jerry Doyle) What we got here, is failure, to communicate. (Captain)

202 Why should you care about 2000 folks on the Falklands? Because how big do you think a space colony is going to be? We need to establish a template, a ruling paradigm now, rather than later. And "Former Third World peoples always gets their way" is, I submit, a poor one. Whereas self-determination is a very good one.

213 This is a one time post...no questions...no comments later from one who knows.  The Koch brothers will not do anything.  Period.  They (or should I say their reps) were presented with cutting edge tech that would have turned the cyber war for the election and they chose to stick with ORCA which now we all know was a big bust except for the political consultants who grabbed millions for their own pockets.  Orca never worked or even was field tested pre-vote.  They were warned and they sat on their hands believing the BS they were handed.  Not very bright..or perhaps the nicer way to put it...they trusted the wrong people to give them advise.  At their age I don't see any revelation about getting righteous in salvation of this country or this system.  Sorry guys, but you are barking up the wrong tree on this.
