— DrewM This would be delicious.
Other than financing a few fringe libertarian publications, the Kochs have mostly avoided media investments. Now, Koch Industries, the sprawling private company of which Charles G. Koch serves as chairman and chief executive, is exploring a bid to buy the Tribune CompanyÂ’s eight regional newspapers, including The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, The Baltimore Sun, The Orlando Sentinel and The Hartford Courant.By early May, the Tribune Company is expected to send financial data to serious suitors in what will be among the largest sales of newspapers by circulation in the country. Koch Industries is among those interested, said several people with direct knowledge of the sale who spoke on the condition they not be named. Tribune emerged from bankruptcy on Dec. 31 and has hired JPMorgan Chase and Evercore Partners to sell its print properties.
The papers, valued at roughly $623 million, would be a financially diminutive deal for Koch Industries, the energy and manufacturing conglomerate based in Wichita, Kan., with annual revenue of about $115 billion.
Politically, however, the papers could serve as a broader platform for the KochsÂ’ laissez-faire ideas. The Los Angeles Times is the fourth-largest paper in the country, and The Tribune is No. 9, and others are in several battleground states, including two of the largest newspapers in Florida, The Orlando Sentinel and The Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale. A deal could include Hoy, the second-largest Spanish-language daily newspaper, which speaks to the pivotal Hispanic demographic.
Yes, newspapers are dying but they still have their uses. The key to buying them would be not branding them as "conservative" (libertarian in actually) but keep them "mainstream". Don't ghettoize yourself, just make some key personnel appointments and let nature take its course.
The New York Times doesn't call itself "liberal" it just does its thing. Conservatives need to adopt that model.

Believe it or not, that was once an editorially centrist paper which endorsed Reagan for president and which ran tough, substantive conservative economics commentary from the likes of the (late and much lamented) Warren T. Brookes. Sure, liberals wrote for the paper too, but there was some balance.
After Hearst bought out the de Young founding family, the formerly moderate Commie-cle went absolutely full apeshit libtard turned up to eleven and has been that way ever since. Without any doubt one of the worst major metro dailies in America.

BB, I wish it were true here. Since McCrory got voted in, and the red sweep of the legislature in 2010, the News and Disturber went absolutely FULL RETARD.
When we had a dem guv and legislature, they did a reasonable job of reporting the news, even outing a few of the criminal element in the govt (that they helped get elected).
Now they are friggin' hysterical, and I had to cancel last week.

So win, win?
Kind of. If they do succeed in buying them they should definitely focus on using the established reader base to build an online presence. If they don't then those papers will likely not exist in another ten years. Meanwhile, conservatives need to continue to build up online organizations to challenge the left's dominance of the news.

Print may be dead, but some print publications are starting to show life online. For instance, most of the MI papers outside of Detroit have consolidated now and have a decent thing going at mlive.com There's still demand for local news and somebody has to report on it. Maybe these print publications will gradually move to an online presence only, but I think they'll continue to exist.

Small local papers will likely be existent for a long while. Our local gets their national news from the wire services, but they do a really good job on the county and town/village matters. They're left slanted since 09, as much as they dare to be. I remind them of this at every opportunity, and to their credit, they print my missives.

You mean you would pay for what's on Breitbart? When a lot of similar material is available for free on the internet? That's somewhat moot now that Newsweek's print edition is dead...but that's kind of the point.
Whatever you think of National Review, it's still the granddaddy of conservative publications. Its print edition has a circulation of 166,000 and, I think, at its height, 250k. By contrast, Newsweek at it's height had a circulation of 4 million. So, I don't think this business model would work.

As others have noted, these properties (Chicago Tribune and LA Times) have established names, circulation measured in the millions, websites with huge amounts of traffic, and credibility outside the non-conservative community. Also, not everyone gets their primary information from the Internet.
So, your attitude is extremely self-referential and short-sighted. I would suggest that you are falling into Pauline Kael territory, except that the evidence suggests that she never actually said the silly thing that wound up being attributed to her for all eternity.
A major network would also be a good investment, politically (and, depending on the network, financially as well). However, the Big Three are not likely to be for sale anytime in the near future, so the Koch brothers would be well advised to take this if they can get it and wait for another opportunity later.

Use the list of which breakers control which outlets / appliances / rooms that you have written in pen or sharpie and keep in a clear plastic protective cover inside the door panel of your breaker box.

They also had their peculiarities in editing. I remember that the day Lee Elia made his infamous rant about Cubs fans, the headline on the Trib's sports page read:
ELIA TO FANS: KISS MY ASS
which last exactly one edition, until someone on the copy desk sobered up and killed it. Ah, those were the days!
So, if the Koch Brothers do buy it and make it a conservative organ again, it'll just be returning the Trib to its roots. In the meantime, it's amusing to see the liberal chorus chanting its horror at the thought of a paper breaking ranks.

All the wire stuff is liberal unless you do major rewrites using your own staff and the press service allows that type of thing.
Commentary was fine with it being split roughly a third between conservative, libertarian and liberal-leftist (often as guest columnists but they also had e.g. Maureen Dowd as a regular) for the sake of balance. (Not that it stopped liberal-left critics from complaining about the "evil Right taking over opinion in Canada!!11!!" just like it doesn't help with Fox News even though, especially currently, it's not all that conservative.)
And many of the ordinary reporters and ordinary staff writers were still the product of liberal journalism programmes including an arts section that regularly ticked me off (although not to the extent of leftist rags in the city).

If you had told environmentalists on Election Day 2008 that four years later thereÂ’d be no successor treaty to the Kyoto Protocol, that a Democratic Congress would not have enacted any meaningful climate legislation, that domestic oil production would be soaring even after a catastrophic offshore oil spill, and that the environmental community would be having a lively internal debate about whether it should support reviving nuclear power, most might have marched into the ocean to drown themselves. Yet thatÂ’s the state of play four months into President ObamaÂ’s second term.

Probably a bad connection at the switch or improper grounding.
More than likely they piggy-backed off of the switch in the garage circuit and did it improperly.

Turn each circuit breaker off. Go back in the house and see which room or what is no longer working.
Go back to the breaker panel and write on that breaker in Sharpie what you noted not working.
Proceed to next breaker. Repeat.

Okay, so turning on the one that sparked won't burn the house down?
If it shorted, the breaker will be off and nothing will happen.
If it is cross-wired or improperly grounded and the breaker didn't shut off, you could have another incident.
Like I said, check the other lights that are close to it...porch light, outside light, mudroom...whatever is closest to the garage switch that shorted. If those don't work, the breaker is likely blown and the problem switch is safe until you reset the breaker.

Fine engine. Just not big enough.
The American moon rocket, the Saturn V, used five F-1 engines in the first stage.
The first stage of the Soviet equivalent booster had thirty engines.
It turned out to be very very difficult to manage things like unwanted resonance.

From Kos' ONT:
Monday marks the 43rd anniversary of Earth Day. Just as for the first Earth Day in 1970, people across the planet will voice their concerns for Mother Earth. This year, the theme is "The Face of Climate Change." The organizers of the Earth Day Network have been gathering faces, of humans and other animals, to bring attention to the crisis of our time: global warming. The mosaic of faces with be available Monday on line and at thousands of events worldwide.
Here is my face:

Ah. "Temporary switch" put in by contractors that is making sparky sparky.
If this were my wife in my house, and if I were advising my wife by phone, I would:
-- Tell her where the master breaker for everything is (she knows, actually)
-- Tell her to pull it
-- Tell her to go spend the night in a hotel
-- Call the contractor in the morning to tell him his ass is thoroughly fired
-- Call an electrical pro to find and fix what the contractor fucked up
-- Send the contractor the hotel bill and the electrician's bill
-- Send the state contractors' license board a strongly worded letter
Seriously, this is electricity, and more houses burn to the ground in the middle of the night, killing everyone inside, due to electrical reasons more than any other single cause. Do not take any chances.

The Left learned long ago how to establish organizational networks. Everyone has heard about ACORN, of course, but there is usually an ACORN-like organization in every state. In my home state of Indiana, that organization is called the Citizens Action Coalition (CAC). There is also an environmentally focused sister organization whose name escapes me right now. Point is, there are groups like these throughout the country. Supposedly, these groups conduct issue-oriented informational campaigns, usually via door-to-door or telephone solicitation. Public education isn't really their purpose. Their purpose is to bankroll those commonly called 'professional Leftists', who do quite nicely, thank you. These 'organizers' devote every waking hour to promoting Leftist causes and candidates. It's their job. They coordinate their efforts via a national network. Years ago, that network was informally called The Hudson Bay Network, but I've never seen that name in print. I just know it exists.
ACORN and these other groups are now being partly subsidized, usually indirectly, by the federal government, which is currently being controlled by people who have, at some point in their careers, worked for groups like ACORN and CAC.
We have a choice. We can copy their methods or do something different yet equally effective. In order for a network to work, we need to actually pay people. Big believers in capitalism, we should at least understand that volunteer efforts can go only so far. Bills need to be paid. Children need to be fed and clothed.
We need committed operatives solely devoted to promoting those things we believe in. Romney's team of richly paid consultants were ineffective in part because, from what I've read, they didn't believe in what they were doing. You better believe President Obama's highly paid consultants are also deeply committed to their cause. Giving a damn makes a difference.

Unless and until it's all carefully inspected by someone whose Spark-Fu is strong, I would definitely turn it all off.
I'm not even remotely a pro electrician, but stuff I have found over the years, even as a competent amateur, gives me nightmares. Electricity kills, if not rigorously overseen. Both directly, via shock, and indirectly via fire.

Fox News does not label itself republican or conservative, and they are not, but because they do not sufficiently attack conservatives, they are considered conservative by liberals.
These newspapers have a better than even chance to perform like Myspace did. shunned by the current readership, unable to attract new readers.

Honestly, I am a cynic. Isn't it too late for our side? They have been using govt to fund their fake nonprofits that were actually political leftist grassroots efforts for so long while our side just did nothing---- content to have won, resting on our laurels. We couldn't even rollback regulations when we won anything of significance. And, instead, just added to national debt and came up with our own govt programs. We're still doing the same as a party --- all the amnesty pushers and "sensible" gun grabbers that are on the scene now.
We're the base, but we don't seem to have any power.

I keep bringing it up on this site but think it bears repeating: prior to the Civil War, the Whig Party fell apart and the Republican Party came into being because Whig leadership failed to challenge the Democrats over the expansion of slavery into the territories. Now the issue is socialism vs. free market capitalism, Marxist-derived collective authoritarianism vs. individual freedom and self-determination. The two approaches are irreconcilable. In the end, just as with slavery, we must be either one thing or the other. We can't be both.
The Republican Establishment thinks the conservative base must accede to their go along and get along agenda and good loser strategies because, well, where else are we going to go? We can remind them of the fate of the Whigs, who thought the same thing under similar circumstances.
Personally, I think we should form a new party and call it the Democrat Party. That way, we can swipe millions of votes from those same Low Information Voters who can't be bothered to tell the difference between 'Democrat' and 'Democratic'.

Think of all the money the Koch brothers wasted on the last election cycle. Buying ads to prop up the same media outlets that tears down conservatives.
How about we just skip the middle man?
I'd be fine if the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy "sat out" a few elections and just bought out media outlets. Far more bang for the buck.
