Kristin Powers: There Is Something Very Wrong With The Media
— Ace

She's speaking of Benghazi, and the media's flat-refusal to cover anything perceived as harmful to the left and Their Beloved Obama, but she has expressed similar sentiments regarding Gosnell, and surely the latter informs her statements about the former.

I can only say I agree, and welcome to the club.

64 The IRS scandal is going to be impossible for the media to ignore. F&F is dead Mexicans, Gosnell is dead black babies, Benghazi is "those crazy Muslims at it again" -- and all are ignored in part because they undermine long standing liberal positions. Everyone is afraid of the IRS. To learn that agents are in fact targeting people on political grounds is something that hits home -- and is easy for people to see how this is bad, whether by a dem controlled govt now or a republican one in four years.

66 Seriously, I disagree with Kirsten Powers probably 95% of the time. But here she is spot on and is to be commended for being intellectually honest in her recent commentary about the Gosnell trial non-coverage and now on Benghazi. Even Dennis Kucinich is being honest about the IRS persecutions of conservatives. We shall see if this is a watershed moment or not. I have very strong doubts. My gut tells me that they are willing to destroy SCOAMF over the IRS in order to save Hillary on Benghazi for 2016.

78 AllenG, I wanted you to see this answer from the last post. Me: 433 Never understood the logic behind thinking that he would walk anyway, especially after the pictures and the gruesome reports. You: Premise 1- People are evil. Premise 2- People are lazy. Premise 3- People are uncomfortable addressing either of these facts. Premise 4- Convicting Gosnell would force people to address 1 and 2. Conclusion- Gosnell will not be convicted. I'm glad that theory has been proven incorrect as well, but it's not as far-fetched as you're assuming. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at May 13, 2013 03:30 PM (/PCJa) Assuming? The above applies to the LIVS, not to the jury, who, by definition, have the pertinent info on this case. Lazy? Why *assume* that about the jury? They had the grand jury reports, the pics and the testimony from Gosnell's assistants. Seems to me that a lot of people were conflating the jury with the average Joe who know nothing about this case and extrapolating a verdict from there...which is why their logic, and yours, escapes me.

106 There is a mortal danger to the Repuic here, folks and it isn't the one you are thinking. Obama and his Chicagoans only understand numbers. So, when it was them and the MFM against the Repubs, they saw no reason for correction. This refusal to correct course (as even Clinton did after the 1994 mid-terms) has already reared its head THREE times in the past week. First, he refused to admit defeat over the gun control legislation. Second, he doubled down on Obamacare. Then today, he brushed off questions about Benghazi If the press does not begin to treat him a politician, we will face a grave foreign policy crisis in the coming months (no, I won't predict specifically, but it will happen). Having learned no accountability, he and his inner circle will gamble with our welfare. I have been worried a put this outcome since the election. Maybe, just maybe, some are now beginning to wake up. I hope.

Seems to me that a lot of people were conflating the jury with the average Joe who know nothing about this case and extrapolating a verdict from there...which is why their logic, and yours, escapes me.

I have a fairly dim view of humanity in general.  We (yep, that includes you and me) tend toward laziness and a generally banal kind of evil that doesn't much care what happens to other people as long as "I get mine."

Some (too few in my view) aspire to higher than that and become generally good (by our reasoning) people.  Most never do.  My statement never had anything to do with what they knew or what evidence they had, it focused fully on them and their (probable) world-view.  I'm glad I was wrong.  I'm glad that my pessimism was more-than-sufficient in this case.

In most cases I find it to be insufficient.

It was only until after I watched the whole miserable series of Matrix movies that I realized how pernicious those movies are. Throughout, the hero and his pals gun down innocent, unknowing people left and right. 'Hi, I'm Frank the security guard, sittin' here readin' the paper, drinkin' a cup of joe, gettin' through the day. Oh, hey, maybe later I'll buy the wife some flowers on the way home and--HOLY SHIT IT'S KEANU REEVES WITH A GUN! AARGH!'

I've learned to hate those movies. Anyway, to the point: I was once a Democrat like Powers, and like Powers, fairly liberal on most issues. A veteran, I was big on national defense issues and an assertive foreign policy, and like Powers, somewhat off the Dem reservation when it came to abortion and what we now call social issues. I thought of myself as a Truman Democrat, although Truman died before I was old enough to vote. It wasn't the appeal of conservativism that made me stop voting Democratic. It was the Monica Lewinsky scandal, of all things--the willingness of supposedly feminist Democrats to paint Lewinsky as a liar and a whore, as well as the unprincipled and hypocritical stance of just about everyone on the Left. After that, I moved Right and kept going.

184 #24 The stories that come out after Obama is gone will be historic. (NOT) #24 is right. There isn't as much money writing revisionist history and outright lies as there is in being a guest defender of the administration. But you can still make a good living.

189 Kirsten Powers: Republicans cry wolf Kirsten Powers3:43 p.m. EDT May 13, 2013 We are coming off four years of being oversold one fantastical story after another about the evils of Obama-land; stories that didn't pan out. There are plenty of worthy questions about Benghazi. But nobody is going to be impeached. It's understandable that people would start to tune out the hyperbole of the professional persecutors. Note to the GOP: if diabolical is your standard, you better be able to prove it. Good luck with that. "Of all the great cover-ups in history — the Pentagon papers, Iran-Contra, Watergate, all the rest of them — this ... is going to go down as most egregious cover-up in American history." Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) was speaking of the Obama Administration's handling of the attack in Benghazi, Libya on September 11 last year. He went on to claim that "People may be starting to use the [word impeachment] before too long." There are plenty of worthy questions about Benghazi. More so now that leaked State Department emails show the Administration intentionally misled the American people regarding the attack. But cries of impeachment at this point are farfetched. Yet, it's unfair to single out the Senator for a predilection that seemingly swirls in the GOP's gene pool: exaggerating and overplaying their hand. They are perennially the party that cried wolf. We are coming off four years of being oversold one fantastical story after another about the evils of Obama-land; stories that didn't pan out. Put in that context, it's understandable that people would start to tune out the hyperbole of the professional persecutors who are always just about to prove something completely unbelievable. It's why so few people have focused on the Benghazi story and why many still remain leery of it. It doesn't help to have people like Sen. Linsday Graham (R-S.C) claim that Benghazi is "every bit as damaging as Watergate." Sen. McCain (R-AZ) tried to walk back that notion on Sunday, but this genie won't go easily back in the bottle. On Meet the Press Sunday, Sen. Dianne Feinstein said, "Every effort has been made to turn [this] into something that's diabolical. I don't see that." She's right. The diabolical standard has not been met. The real question is why does the GOP keep making that the standard? As the Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Congressman Darell Issa squandered precious credibility trying unsuccessfully to pin low-level bureaucratic incompetence in a gun-running operation called "Operation Fast and Furious" on President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder. When Issa didn't like one of Holder's responses at a hearing, he snapped, "John Mitchell [of Watergate fame] responded that way too." In what has become a seemingly foreordained moment for Congressional Republicans, Wisconsin Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner told Holder that if he didn't do what was asked of him, "there is only (one) alternative that Congress has and it is called impeachment." Former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Lamar Smith tried to block the confirmation of a DOJ nominee in an effort to extract information that would prove that the Obama Administration had an allegiance to the New Black Panther Party. (The Justice Department had dismissed a Bush-era voter intimidation case against the NBPP where not one voter ever alleged being intimidated.)The Philadelphia Weekly asked Virginia Republican Rep. Frank Wolf why exactly President Obama would want to do any favors for the NBPP, which is so extreme its been condemned by the actual Black Panther Party. Wolf said: "I can't answer that. That's what we're trying to find out." Incidentally, in 2012 the head of the New Black Panthers wrote that the Democratic Party is the "institutional pimp of Black peoples" and called Obama "a real disappointment." Abigail Thernstrom, a stalwart conservative scholar who sat on the Commission that investigated the NBPP allegations warned that this "overblown attack threatens to undermine the credibility" of other more valid conservative criticism. Nobody seems to have listened to her. Sen. Rand Paul signed a fundraising letter last week alleging that Obama is helping "anti-American globalists plot against our Constitution." Rep. Marsha Blackburn made the absurd and unsupportable claim that Kermit Gosnell was "the norm" for abortion clinics. Note to the GOP: if diabolical is your standard, you better be able to prove it. Good luck with that.

I think Powers is undergoing a kind of incremental transformation, Waldo. The Gosnell case opened her eyes, if only a little. She probably still doesn't (and won't) think Benghazi was anything but a mixture of low-level incompetence and high-level CYA, but she does recognize that the media is failing in its constitutionally implied obligations. That's a start.

194 Some (too few in my view) aspire to higher than that and become generally good (by our reasoning) people. Most never do. My statement never had anything to do with what they knew or what evidence they had, it focused fully on them and their (probable) world-view. I'm glad I was wrong. I'm glad that my pessimism was more-than-sufficient in this case. In most cases I find it to be insufficient. Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at May 13, 2013 04:21 PM (/PCJa) I pretty much agree with you, but it didn't take much effort to call that creature guilty. I don't even think one had to be particularly industrious or moral to do it. Pictures of slashed dead babies require little introspection.

195 if diabolical is your standard, you better be able to prove it.

Once someone sings about what Stevens was doing in an unsecured location vulnerable to this kind of attack, the diabolical part will probably take care of itself.

196 I really think Kirsten Powers' attitude started to change when the left went after Sarah Palin.

Powers is also from Alaska,  and she knew the stories were BS.  She was on Fox several times talking about how misogynistic some of the dems were.  I believe she also was upset about Obama's attacks on Clinton.

199 From Hot Air...if the press was not already ticked off at the regime, this should do the trick from the DoJ:

The records obtained by the Justice Department listed incoming and outgoing calls, and the duration of each call, for the work and personal phone numbers of individual reporters, general AP office numbers in New York, Washington and Hartford, Conn., and the main number for AP reporters in the House of Representatives press gallery, according to attorneys for the AP.

In all, the government seized those records for more than 20 separate telephone lines assigned to AP and its journalists in April and May of 2012. The exact number of journalists who used the phone lines during that period is unknown but more than 100 journalists work in the offices whose phone records were targeted on a wide array of stories about government and other matters.
