Late NFL Game Open Thread: Steelers vs. Bengals [OregonMuse]
— Open Blogger

Another Sunday, another day of pain if you're a Browns fan

Another Sunday, and another victory pissed away by the Sultan of Suck, the Chieftain of Choke, the Duke of Defeat, the Prince of Picks, Tony Romo.

That and their crappy play calling. Apparently, they've never heard of running the ball to take some time off the clock when you're ahead late in the game.

3 The interception was hilarious, but it took the whole team to lose that game. Oh, and I'm glad to see the Cardiac Cards are back. Even a 34-17 lead with five minutes to go with a top tier defense isn't safe.

Posted by: Mark_E at December 15, 2013 04:24 PM (NvjU1)

4 Yay Bengals!! Slam the door on the Steelers and keep 2nd seed!

Tony Romo is gonna hear about that pass. But then it's not all his fault, right? And maybe the Packers defense were on the spot.

8 Dallas loss had nothing to do with mistakes by Romo and everything to do with the awesomeness that is the Green Bay Packers.

23 It's always a good day for me when the Patriots lose, especially when the Broncos ate a balls earlier this week and the Patriots' loss keeps them from pulling into a tie for first seed with the tiebreaker in their favor.

And then I started thinking about cheerleader outfits with corsets and leather.

35 In news of the stupid, WWE's TLC PPV tonight is a title match between John Cena and Randy Orton to unify the WWE Championship and World Heavyweight Championship and determine who is the "face" of WWE. The two belts were split back when WWE bought WCW after it won the Monday Night Wars and split the roster between Raw and Smackdown, so each show (and show branded touring group visiting every small town, high school and mall in America) had a champion. Expectation is for some crazy swerve at the end. It should be some good, stupid fun.

89 >>>What were you trying to tell me earlier about the Kel Tec? Hey buddy! Buy it. Especially if you can get it to share mags with a favorite pistol. Mine uses the same mags as my G22 and G27. Very, vapery accurate at typical defense range, marginal at 100 yards with the factory "iron" sights (could be the operator). Buy the aftermarket rail to replace the factory handguard. It's my favorite weapon, and if my front door gets kicked it, I'll grab that before any pistol or rifle I have. Also, a real attention getter at the range. Easy to clean, easy to shoot, manual of arms is toddler simple. Just buy it already.

98 Continued from last thread. People are talking about the useless gas cans that are all you can buy now. They're a result of unrestricted lawfare. The largest manufacturer of gas cans, Blitz (good cans, I've got 3 or 4), was driven out of business after almost a century by dozens of lawsuits from three lawyers who basically claimed that you couldn't safely pour gas onto a fire from a Blitz can. Really. Think about that. It's like complaining that you can't put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger without getting hurt or killed. Even though I believe they won almost all the cases, the expense bankrupted them. Common sense is dead. America soon to follow.

Denver / Boulder are okay-ish for educated single men. The single women here tend to be graduates from higher-end colleges. Educated women don't date much with people lower on the social scale.

I can pass for an upper-class twit pretty easily, especially online. So I should be in clover... right?

Except that I went to school with upper-class twits most of my life, and I can't stand upper-class twits. Or twit-ettes.

112 Beware the Dark Enlightenment! As to the tiny UFC guys. Mighty Mouse had the rare flyweight one punch KO. Which was impressive. But watching small men fight will always draw less fan interest. It's instinctive. Watching two big badass dudes fight taps into tribal battles for leadership. Stakes were high in paleo times when the two toughest dudes in the tribe square off. We evolved to pay a lot of attention when there are open fights for tribal dominance. And that's what combat sports taps into. Hacks into our brain. But tiny dudes just aren't as good as hacking our brains. Thousands of years ago tribal leadership was very rarely settle by having the two smallest dudes in the tribe punch each other.

More and more, I have to figure that Lycurgus of Sparta actually was a god, and not a man.

Lycurgus knew all of what you just said; and he knew that all the other Iron Age states in the Peloponnese were running on the "big man" principle. And then he thought - how can Sparta get the edge, long-term?

So he set up a system where the kings were basically ambulatory flags (if very well-trained flags!). The people who made the real decisions were the Ephors, who were ... the smallest dudes in the tribe, who had fought all the wars and, also, survived them.

Maybe I'll serve coffee to AtC in it if she ever visits), but Model's lawyers told him he would need something to give back to settle the inevitable lawsuit, and that's exactly what happened. Cleveland got to keep their name and history, the NFL helped pay for their new stadium, they got the Browns back in a couple of years and we got the team that the NFL conned us out of in 1995. If we could have only gotten OUR name back from Indiananoplace....

148 Warbler: yes, David's choice is the other answer to the "how to beat the big bully" question. . .

Sparta set up itself as the bully - as a Bully State, in effect; the state digested Goliath [the Homeric Greek ideal], became Goliath. This system worked great until it, um, didn't:

Israel - specifically, the hillmen of Judah - simply disappeared into the hills and shot at Goliath with slings. (Disclosure - I think the David / Goliath story is allegory.)

Judah survived and is still with us. The Philistines didn't survive. As for the Spartans: there are a couple of villages which still speak Doric (Spartan Greek) but not many:

178 December really hates Romo Posted by: Ncj at December 15, 2013 08:30 PM Not really. Just looking his personal stats, he's a Top 5 QB in December. Fans and media like to put the blame solely on him, since it's convenient, but it's the whole team of Cowboys who seem to be DEC chokers. (Full disclosure: I'm a die-hard Chicago Bears fan who cares nothing either way about the Cowboys). "Bleacher Report's own Brad Gagnon recently took a look at Romo's numbers in December, and the result wasn't what many people would suspect. Since 2009, Romo is top five among all quarterbacks in completion percentage (65. , touchdown-to-interception ratio (24-7), yards per attempt (8.1) and passer rating (103.5). Gagnon also referenced ESPN Dallas' Tim McMahon, who pointed out that Romo in December is about as clutch as a fat old elf in a big red suit: Here is the entire list of quarterbacks who have a better December passer rating than Romo since 2009: Aaron Rodgers. That's it. Yet the Cowboys are only 6-7 in December games started by Romo in that span. Sorry, but it's pretty silly to point the finger at the franchise quarterback with a 106.3 passer rating in those games. To put that rating in perspective, it's more than 10 points better than his norm, which ranks fifth in NFL history. So seriously, it's not all Romo's fault. We remember the horrific interceptions and the game's ending with that famous look of bewilderment in his eyes, but we don't remember the times he does exactly what he's supposed to do. Pro Football Reference tracks both fourth-quarter comebacks and game-winning drives. In those categories — you know, the things people say that Romo never does — Romo ranks sixth and eighth, respectively, among all active quarterbacks. In the entire history of the NFL, he ranks 23rd and 39th. Things could be worse."

179 (Please Lord: Let Rodgers be back next week. These wins by a sliver are agonizing.) Posted by: Donna V. lost all her fingernails during the Packer game at December 15, 2013 10:17 PM Just imagine had Flynn been able to complete the comeback vs the Vikings. The Packers would be 8-6, tied with the Bears, with a possible winner-take-all game for the Division title played at Soldier Field last week of the season. (If the Lions choke the division away). In my worst nightmare, the Bears and Packers both win this coming week to go to 9-6 and the Lions lose the next two games to go to 7-8 heading into the last week of the season. But then Rodgers comes back and he and Eddie Lacy shred the Bears D in Soldier Field to win the division. UGH...

Posted by: Teh Most Interesting Man at December 15, 2013 08:34 PM (6RwsK)

181 179. QB ratings are misleading. Of course Romo is a talented passer and often puts up gaudy numbers. And though it's not his fault that his defense  gives up so many points, Romo has always had a penchant for throwing  interceptions at the end of games. So if he throws  4 TD's, his defense allows 4 rushing TD's  and then he  throws a game-killing interception in the last minute, his QB rating will be much higher than the opposing QB's, but the Cowboys still lose.
