1 The old saying in politics goes....if you're explaining, you're losing. Democrats have been doing nothing but explaining why Obamacare is actually working. Which means they're losing. They might not realize it, but they are. The key is what will Republicans do about it? Given it's the stupid party, chances are they won't do shit with it.

4 The number of undocumented Cubans intercepted in Mexico on their way to the U.S. border has more than doubled in the eight months since Havana eased its migration controls, according to Mexican government figures. The Interior Ministry numbers were the latest indication of the greatly increased flow of Cubans, both undocumented and legal, through Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean over the past year. Most, if not all of the Cubans, are heading to the United States, where they are protected from deportation to Cuba, can receive benefits as refugees and qualify for permanent U.S. residency after one year and one day.

They don't vote Republican 80/20 either like they used to. But on whole more Cubans = less net Democrat voters.

6 A runner is called out if he is blatantly out of the baseline.  If he is not (out of the rounding arc anyway) out of the baseline the runner gets the benefit of a doubt.  Obstruction of the runners progress will always be called.

OK, Nevergiveup.  I read your last post in the boo thread.

Your argument would apply had the Cards runner NOT SLID into Third.

Sliding into third gives him a path to home from 6 foot on the 2nd Base side of the bag to the plate.

He was in his path to home when Middlebrooks tripped him up.   (And Middlebrooks absolutely tripped him on purpose.)

Posted by: garrett at October 27, 2013 08:01 AM (fcWGP)

8 OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner.
Posted by: BignJames at October 27, 2013 11:56 AM (ZNQKl)

He was in the act of trying to field the ball, unsuccessfully, but he dove for it.

-------------

From the rules:

"After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the act of fielding the ball. For example: If an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner."

Middlebrooks had the obligation to lay still (or vacate)  until the runner cleared him.  Even then, if the runner tripped over him, or was impeded in any way, Obstruction is the call.

It is as cut and dry as rules get.

Posted by: garrett at October 27, 2013 08:03 AM (fcWGP)

10 Cubans tend not to stay reliant on the government hammock too.  You do not see 2nd and 3rd generation Cuban layabouts.  Very hard working and entrepreneurial.  I love the Cubans.

You can argue whether or not there should be a obstruction rule, but you can't reasonably argue that there wasn't obstruction.  It was obvious.

Agreed. To me it looked as if he raised his legs to intentionally block him , but as you say  - that is neither here nor there as far as the application of the rule goes.

Yeah, pretty blatant dive.  He got hung up between home and third and tried to get back to the bag.  He recognized he wasn't going to make it, felt a player close to him  and tried to buy an obstruction call by diving.

It was pretty damn pathetic.

We need the obligatory, predictable, boring 5 or 6 comments about how boring and old-fashioned baseball is. Mr. Moo Moo has given us one. I'm sure others will step up to the plate, so to speak.

I was initally taken aback by the call, but it looks like the ump called it right after all.

27 In-laws just called and they are democrats who believe everything Ogabe says. They are in their 80s and have (HAD) a supplemental health insurance plan in addition to mediscare.  They received a notice telling them  they will have to find another insurance company as they are dropping them because of Ogabecare.  They are beside themselves with grief as they have no extra money for insurance (if they can even find a policy at the same cost).  They kept saying over and over that Ogabe told them if they like their policies they could keep their policies.  Told them Ogabe a pathological liar and it only gets worse from here.  It will be interesting to watch the nation burn.

37 Baseball is like golf smallbore prone.
Fun to play. Excruciatingly boring to watch.
God help me, I love it so.

The baseball call was perfectly correct, except:
The third base umpire did not give the correct arm signal for the call.
He should have raised his arms above his head, same call as "Time."
This makes the ball dead, and the throw to the plate would not have counted.

Luckily for us in the rules interpretation business, we have a Constitutional Law Professor as President. And it ain't nothin' until he calls it. Watch and see.

39 If purp ever brings it back, I made some killer comments...  just sayin'

Posted by: Yip at October 27, 2013 09:01 AM (/jHWN)

40 Saw this explanation of the Call Heard Round the World on a sports blog thread. Guy making comments is a HS baseball umpire. "There was nothing Middlebrooks could do. And guess what? IT. DOES. NOT. MATTER. His rights ended when the ball went past him; anything—ANYTHING—even a nanosecond after that is the act of a player not making a play. An infielder not playing the ball who impedes a runner is guilty of obstruction, whether he could have avoided it or not. As the counterfactual, how would it be fair for Craig to be out at home when he lost three seconds tangled up with the infielder? The core principle of baseball is that you get guys out with the actual freakin' BASEBALL. If there is no baseball nearby, you are not allowed to do anything to the runner that might later make him be out." Actually was watching this game when this all happened. My first thought was 'I think I could run faster than this poor guy who didn't even touch home base when he slid.' So I was confused as to why all the cheering for a run not scored. Then heard the obstruction call-saw the replay-and. . . Yup.

41 I tire of people who call baseball boring. You don't like it? Fine, don't watch it. But spare us your smug, world-weary opining. Some people also claim that chess is boring. I call them "idiots".

@ Stringer Davis

You better read Rule 7.06(b). Play does not stop immediately upon the obstruction, and the umpire was correct to simply note the obstruction with his pointing gesture and allow play to continue until a natural stoppage.

Here is the rule:

(b) If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call “Time” and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction.

There was no play being made on the runner Craig after he was obstructed until the play at the plate, so play was properly allowed to proceed. Of course stopping play in this instance would have rendered the same result because of the walk-off nature of the run heading home. So the ump could have called "Time" immediately without changing the outcome, but that is not how obstruction is called.

43 "It was a stupid tax. A misconceived tax." Tell that to George W. Bush's pick, Chief Justice Roberts re: socialist ObamaCare. WaPo, Oct.24 Lally Weymouth: An interview with Australia Prime Minister Tony Abbott “The carbon tax is bad for the economy and it doesn’t do any good for the environment. If the Labor Party wants to give the people of Australia a Christmas present, they will vote to abolish the carbon tax. It was damaging the economy without helping the environment.
