OK, Nevergiveup. I read your last post in the boo thread.
Your argument would apply had the Cards runner NOT SLID into Third.
Sliding into third gives him a path to home from 6 foot on the 2nd Base side of the bag to the plate.
He was in his path to home when Middlebrooks tripped him up. (And Middlebrooks absolutely tripped him on purpose.)

He was in the act of trying to field the ball, unsuccessfully, but he dove for it.

-------------
From the rules:
"After a fielder has made an attempt to field a ball and missed, he can no longer be in the act of fielding the ball. For example: If an infielder dives at a ground ball and the ball passes him and he continues to lie on the ground and delays the progress of the runner, he very likely has obstructed the runner."

Middlebrooks had the obligation to lay still (or vacate) until the runner cleared him. Even then, if the runner tripped over him, or was impeded in any way, Obstruction is the call.
It is as cut and dry as rules get.

A peek at a near future when all of the Liberal policies of American Politicians have succeeded in erasing poverty, applying laws fairly to citizens, and embracing international laws that put us on equal footing with the rest of the world. A Utopia that only the paranoid and irrational would struggle against as their way of life is taken from their Cold Dead Hands.

You can argue whether or not there should be a obstruction rule, but you can't reasonably argue that there wasn't obstruction. It was obvious.
(and intentional in my eyes, but intent doesn't matter)

I pointed this out last night. :
The Prince Fielder Belly Flop in the LCS was a bid at getting this same call.

Agreed. To me it looked as if he raised his legs to intentionally block him , but as you say - that is neither here nor there as far as the application of the rule goes.

I didn't see it, but that's an awful lot of belly to flop....(I should talk)
Yeah, pretty blatant dive. He got hung up between home and third and tried to get back to the bag. He recognized he wasn't going to make it, felt a player close to him and tried to buy an obstruction call by diving.
It was pretty damn pathetic.

We need the obligatory, predictable, boring 5 or 6 comments about how boring and old-fashioned baseball is. Mr. Moo Moo has given us one. I'm sure others will step up to the plate, so to speak.
I was initally taken aback by the call, but it looks like the ump called it right after all.

23 Wouldn't you know, they scheduled the Packers game against the World Series tonight. Oh well, it's just the Vikings. Posted by: mama winger at October 27, 2013 12:15 PM (P6QsQ)
I'll be doing a lot of channel-switching. It's always nice to see the Vikings lose.

Fun to play. Excruciatingly boring to watch.
God help me, I love it so.
The baseball call was perfectly correct, except:
The third base umpire did not give the correct arm signal for the call.
He should have raised his arms above his head, same call as "Time."
This makes the ball dead, and the throw to the plate would not have counted.
Luckily for us in the rules interpretation business, we have a Constitutional Law Professor as President. And it ain't nothin' until he calls it. Watch and see.

@ Stringer Davis
You better read Rule 7.06(b). Play does not stop immediately upon the obstruction, and the umpire was correct to simply note the obstruction with his pointing gesture and allow play to continue until a natural stoppage.
Here is the rule:
(b) If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call “Time” and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction.
There was no play being made on the runner Craig after he was obstructed until the play at the plate, so play was properly allowed to proceed. Of course stopping play in this instance would have rendered the same result because of the walk-off nature of the run heading home. So the ump could have called "Time" immediately without changing the outcome, but that is not how obstruction is called.
