LATimes: Scientists "Struggle" To Explain Why Earth Isn't Warming
— Gabriel Malor

According to the L.A. Times, climate scientists are now exploring new theories to sell to the public to explain why their climate models -- which called for measurable and serious warming to be occurring -- totally failed to predict that no global warming has occurred for more than a decade.

Since just before the start of the 21st century, the Earth's average global surface temperature has failed to rise despite soaring levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases and years of dire warnings from environmental advocates.

Now, as scientists with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gather in Sweden this week to approve portions of the IPCC's fifth assessment report, they are finding themselves pressured to explain this glaring discrepancy.

Imagine that. Scientists being asked to explain why their science doesn't seem to be working out. The nerve.

Though scientists don't have any firm answers, they do have multiple theories.

I bet.

Ben tells me no news dump this morning and Monty says DOOM is out too. You may consider this another open thread.

It's the racists' fault.  See, population isn't growing as fast as it should be, and minorities are supposed to be faster growing.  Minorities have darker skin, so they absorb more heat than the oppressive white race that is reflecting heat back into space.  So, the models are right, except for the racist white people who are screwing up the actual data. /s

Unfortunately, I would not be surprised to see ManBearPig or one of his acolytes advance a theory like this, because it combines two of their favorite themes, global warming and because RAAACIST.

And the middle class.

Unless they have a cheaper price for the EBT folks than everyone else, I don't really have a problem with people on EBT buying Pizza. From a nutrition standpoint (in moderation- but get real), pizza is kind of a miracle food. Vegetables, carbs, dairy, & protein all in one nice package. Would I rather they buy the stuff and at least be forced to make the pizza at home? Yeah. But I'd rather not be footing the bill for their food in the first place.

Modeling is not science, I'll say it.

It has far to much ability to be influenced by the experimenter to even approach science.

And keep in mind, all science has this problem, but modeling is that far out of the bounds of "acceptable" as to not be science anymore.

That's not just my opinion, I'm claiming expertise on my somewhat fake credentials! (Can I write for the WSJ now?)

BTW, congrats Allen, Can I borrow $100?

46 You know, for most people, if you found some evidence that some calamitous event wasn't going to happen, you'd rejoice.  Sort of like finding out that your lab results were mixed up and you mistakenly got a cancer diagnosis belonging to someone else - you sure wouldn't insist upon a course of chemotherapy treatment in spite of this new evidence, would you?

47 srsly tho - they were always attempting to bum everybody out about 'loss of habitat' and crap - shouldn't they be celebrating rather be all bummed out? This is actually a good point. If they were *really* worried about the environment, they wouldn't be looking to "explain the discrepancy," they'd be jubilant that they were wrong. "Yay! We've proven that not to be the problem!" they'd say. But the environment was never the point. Money was. And if the "crisis" goes away, their funding dries up. Thus they *must* find a way to "prove" that Human beings are destroying the planet.

55 "Scientists struggle to explain..." This is when the really funny stuff gets trotted out. (See: Eugenics). The last "explanation" I heard was that all the extra heat was being "sucked up" by the oceans. With absolutely no relation to actual physics, that's going to be the theory. Watch. Someone will publish a paper, it will be stamped "peer reviewed" within 10 minutes of publication. The science will be settled, again, and, SHUT UP, give me my grant! This feedback loop is way too lucrative to ever be stopped. Science+ Government + Liberal guilt= Public/Corporate Dollars in unlimited quantities. Well, it just *might* get conveyed towards the bottom by some of the conveyor-belt ocean currents and been seen later as the currents loop back over.  Or as we scientists call it, convection.

But without any actual data to support that hypothesis, it's just so much bullshit.

Candy and soda at the very least need to go.  Frankly, Name brand stuff also needs to get the boot.

Lots of other premade stuff might possibly too.  The problem is the intrinsic cost of trying to figure out "what is acceptable" and "what is not" probably isn't worth it for the government (or us, since the cost of enforcing that would fall to grocers, driving up our bills)

So it stays broken.

82 Hmmm. I dipped my toe into a Facebook post made by a friend of mine yesterday. I don't do Facebook much, and this particular friend is a barking Lib. I like her quite a bit, known her for decades, but our politics....no. Anyhoo, in the course of my reply, I said in an aside "And our government is getting more authoritarian all the time" and was told by one of her friends "I stopped reading when I read this. it's an insult to people who live under real authoritarian govts. You live in one of the most free societies in the history of the world. Blah, blah". And once again I ran head on into Proggy blindness. Most free? We were. More free than most of the world? Sure, OK. More free than we were at the start of my 46 year lifespan? Not by a long chalk, and how any rational person can miss that just boggles my mind. It's not even a R/D thing, one of the biggest infringers on our freedom is the TSA, started by Bush. I think Reagan had it right. It's not that our liberal friends are ignorant, it's just that they know so much that isn't true. Still, it's jarring when you meet someone who in all seriousness insists the sky is green. Here's what I wrote in it's entirety if you're curious, names redacted: Y'all miss the point. XXXXXX was implying how stupid it is to be concerned that someone is going to "take her gun", and yet government has the ability to do so, whats more, authoritarian governments (and ours is becoming more and more authoritarian daily) have a history of doing exactly that, in fact I can't think of one authoritarian government that hasn't. The concern that guns may be confiscated, maybe not today, but one day, is therefor based upon history and reality (and the rather inconvenient fact that anti-gun groups and politicians have openly stated that that's their goal). Christians, OTOH, can do exactly what about someone's sex life? Tisk and tut and mutter disapprovingly? Tell you you're going to hell (while lacking any actual mechanism to send anyone to hell)? So what? And yet I see enormous angst and outcry about those confounded evil busybody Christians on blogs, Facebook, Twitter, etc.. My point, then, was likely versus unlikely possibilities, and how much time should be spent worrying about which ones. YMMV Oh, and what someone else said about Christians in response proved that my point went so far over her head it's actually amusing.

85 Here is an example that will help people relate to why part of the earth are cooler, even though the earth is heating up.  Imagine you come home on a cool day and your furnace is off.  You turn it on but the registers are closed in the bedrooms.  The hot air then all enters only the living,/dinning room/ kitchen areas.  This pushes all the cold to the bedrooms so he temperature there actually drops.  In fact, while it was cool there before, icicles actually may start forming. The more you turn up the heat, the more the cold is forced into the bedrooms and the icicles keep growing. I'm sure many of you here have seen this effect in your own houses.  We have models that demonstrate this too!

Pre-made dough from Trader Joe's-$1.20, can of sauce-$1.50, Cheese-$2.00, bag of peperoni-$1.00. It's close in price, but I buy the above all the time and cook it in 5 minutes on the grill. 127 Cloud cover causes cooling. Lack of, heating. Because, sun, shade. Mostly, cosmic rays (the real ones, not the Fantastic Four ones) cause clouds. Stars cause cosmic rays. When our local star gets active, we get more cosmic rays, more clouds, more cooling. When our star is more dormant, the opposite. Humans are insignificant to the process. Cloud cover may of course also be increased by comet strikes, volcanic eruptions, and possibly a major nuclear conflict. In descending order of potential cooling. But all these are the minor fluctuations within the larger cosmic cycle. Every 25,000 years or so, our star orbits near other stars. We get more of their cosmic rays, and an ice age. Our long "summer" is waning. We're on our way back there now. Invest long-term in heating fuels.

I think this winter we will see--for the first time in a long time--dozens of Americans freezing to death.

It's a scary thought and I don't wish it so but we have a lot of factors that say it is very likely:
1) Bad economy, people cutting back, living on the razor edge.
2) spike in utility bills from extended cold snaps
3) at least one or two big snowstorm/blizzards

means we could have a lot of people without any heat for weeks.

We will further be told not to politicize their deaths but if it's anybody's fault it's the Republicans for cutting program X, Y, or Z. No one will dare point out that if they had a job, they would not have to be on public assistance.

158 Why would there be fewer preservatives in the canned sauce and premade dough sold retail vs. the same products sold wholesale? Shelf life. Fewer preservatives in a sealed can or dough with a couple of days in the fridge versus a pre-made pie. Taste was my main point though. It just tastes a lot better.

162 People talking about the nutritional value of pizza. During the Libyan clusterfuck, a news agency showed some of the "rebels" making pizza to be sent to the front. It looked like, what we would call, a deep dish, lots of cheese and vegies, some sauce, unknown meat, wrapped in foil. Kinda put my ham and motherfuckers to shame.

Henrik Svensmark's theory on cosmic rays and clouds explains all SIX billion years of climate change for the planet earth.

goto wikipedia and look him up. You'll see reference to the one hour youtube video on the cloud mystery, his book chilling stars, and the wattsup blogs posts on the CERN proving the core scientific basis of his theory.

164 Quote from the LA Times article. "The theory, which is gaining adherents, remains unproved by actual observation." HA HA HA HA. What's a theory? A scientific theory is a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on knowledge that has been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experimentation. Scientists create scientific theories from hypotheses that have been corroborated through the scientific method, then gather evidence to test their accuracy. As with all forms of scientific knowledge, scientific theories are inductive in nature and aim for predictive and explanatory force. HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

The Earth isn't warming for the same reason that the Cardiff Giant is not an actual fossil.

Because a hoax is a hoax.
