Let's Ban the AR-15 Shotgun
— Ace

No serious. Last night CNN broke the news that the Navy Yard shooter used an AR-15 shotgun.

We must ban this weapon that has already been banned by reason of Not Existing.

I don't know, would this be a good stunt? If Republicans actually passed a bill to ban the weapon that doesn't exist in order to embarrass the media?

Probably not.

Piers Morgan's entire show was dedicated to the proposition that an AR-15 (whether of the rifle or shotgun variation) was used in the killings. Indeed, one might say that his entire life has been dedicated to this proposition.

Except it wasn't:

Yesterday #BuzzfeedAndrewKazcinsky baited the NRA by noting they weren't commenting when facts were still unknown.

I dunno. Seems like a wise principle. Perhaps more of the Scolding Teacher Media would do well to follow their example.

Update: After a day of screaming about AR-15s, Piers Morgan's twitter stream is now oddly absent of references to them.

No retraction, no correction. Just shifting from AR-15s to guns in general.

Which is precisely why people will not permit it to be banned -- because they understand that those who want to ban will shift, as abruptly and dishonestly as Piers Morgan, from AR-15s to guns in general.

Piers Speaks... After devoting a show to the Scourge of the AR-15, he now has a different position: "What difference does it make?"

6 Actually, from the initial reports, he had a fully-automatic rapid-fire high-powered military-style folding-stock silenced flash-suppressed 9mm 12-gauge Assault Glock AK-15 shotgun.

With the shoulder thing that goes up, a bayonet, a compass in the stock, and this thing that tells time.

Loaded with high-capacity magazine banana clips full of 'cop-killer' bullet cartridges.

With the optional double-barreled over/under 40mm grenade launcher AND the flame-thrower.

And, it was BLACK (possibly 'WHITE-Black'), and in the 40 megawatt range.

I think CNN confirmed this...

Actually, ace, depending on the reports one might have listened to at any time yesterday, the Lunatic Punkass Shooter (my name for the bastard) was using a    black    semi-automatic assault    Glock   AK-15 shotgun rifle, with the shoulder-thingy that goes up.

Parker in the previous thread summed it up most accurately:

Link from Drudge:

Aaron Alexis may have picked up and used victimsÂ’ weapons: investigators

The officials said Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas, a 34-year-old discharged Navy engineer, entered the building with a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun that heÂ’d purchased last week in Lorton, Va., and was later found with two additional weapons, a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.

One scenario authorities were investigating was that he obtianed the handgun and the rifle at the scene, possibly from victims. But officials cautioned the evidence analysis was still very fluid Monday night.

38 IF the allegation was true that the shooter had picked up an "AR15" from the body of someone he killed on the base, then its most likely that it would have been an M4 or M16 - different from the AR15 - so even in that instance this would have been incorrect, even people on our side should be making that distinction since the M4 or M16 is the "scarier" version what with the 3 round burst.  The distinction is important to note - otherwise the uninformed populace (read: media) stays uninformed and ignorant of the truth

The problem is, you wouldn't embarrass them.  Because they'd simply memory hole what they said and make the story, "look, look!  Dumbass Rethuglicans are teh stoopidz!  They don't even know what kind of guns exist!"

A far better tactic, IMO, would be simply to bring the subject up at each instance of face time, e.g.,

"Well, Senator Poppins, don't you think this calls for more gun control?"

"I don't know, Wolf.  Could you refresh my memory as to the kind of gun used?"

"Of course.  An AK-47."

"No, that can't be right, Wolf.  You see, here I have a transcript of your network's reporting.  You said the gun used was an AR-15.  I've never seen one of those, so I wonder if you could show me one?"

Democrats flocked to calls for "gun control." They didn't go anywhere. Then there was the Aurora, CO shooting- the one where the gunman drove somewhat out of his way to shoot up a theater which had "No Guns" posted. No opportunity there. Then came Sandy Hook, and the grieving parents who wanted to Ban All The Guns. And still the American people said, "Not on my watch" to gun control. Now there's *another* mass shooting. This time on a military base (you, and I know military bases are "gun free zones" but most people don't). And less than 24 hours later, TFG is already saying he'll use EOs to implement gun control. Now, is he really just moving that fast (him? 18 hours to decide if he wanted to take out Bin Laden?)? Because the funny chem-trails are suggesting that an administration that would assert it has the power to override the rule of law and the constitution "just whenever" would not particularly hesitate to set up a situation wherein the President could step forward and "act because Congress has failed to..." Born and raised in Queens, Alexis lived on 77th Road in Kew Gardens Hills. He attended Hillcrest HS and bounced around Brooklyn, Staten Island and Harlem. In 2000, he obtained a rifle permit from the NYPD to shoot at local firing ranges, sources said. Alexis, 34, spent nearly four years in the Navy from May 2007 until 2011.

In other words, he was a New Yorker, not a Texan. Okay, MFM?

But the tidbit I find most interesting was this, regarding Lunatic Punkass Shooter's time with the local Buddhist temple   in Fort   Worth:

A temple member said Alexis could chant better than some of the Thai worshippers. But the vet was disgruntled over military dismissal. “He thought he never got a promotion because of the color of his skin,” said the fellow congregant, Ty Thairintr.

Odds we hear anything else about that in the rest of the mainstream motherfucking media? Probably nil.

Has anyone here wondered why so many of these mass shootings are happening under obamas watch?

As Mary Cloggenstein would say, it's the desperation of good people driven to extreme actions because of the hatred, racism and obstructionism of the Rethuglican party in opposing all the good Obama (PBUH) is attempting.

93 Too bad we can't weaponize this comment from a couple of threads ago and shove it up Piers' ass (wrapped around a rotten pineapple that's been lit on fire, natch):

160 Actually, from the initial reports, he had a fully-automatic rapid-fire high-powered military-style folding-stock silenced flash-suppressed 9mm 12-gauge Assault Glock AK-15 shotgun.

94 do we sort of agree that leftists generally put no real value on human life? Doesn't it sort of follow that they see no reason let let anyone (unless that person is covered by "to each according to his need", you know, like them) engage in self-defense? In which case, there is no reason to let anyone have any kind of gun?
Am I exaggerating here?

108 So this loser had two different firearms arrests in civilian life, serious ones, and in both cases, no prosecutions resulted from it, hence no record. And nothing to bar him from buying weapons or getting a SECRET clearance.

Then while he was in the military, he had an extensive string of offenses, including what the press refer to as "failures to show up for work". Once again, the media (who have essentially no exposure to and no interest in the military) show their total incomprehension of military matters.

When someone is a uniformed member of the armed services, "failure to show up for work" is spelled A-W-O-L, and it's a criminal offense. The sort of thing that when it is a repeated pattern, as it was here, typically leads to courts-martial and/or dishonorable discharges.

Instead, again, this guy skated without any substantive punishment, and he was given an honorable discharge despite being an absent, insubordinate, disorderly shitbird. Once again preserving his ability to buy weapons and to get a clearance.

Pretty clear what's been going on. Like Saint Trayvon Of The Bloodied Hoodie, this guy was operating behind the diversity deflector shield. Committing offenses that should have landed him in bad trouble, and gotten him punished, and thereby kept him and others around him out of worse trouble later on.

But instead of having useful corrective consequences ensue, he was protected by his magic melanin layer, with the authorities, military and civilian alike, discreetly letting him slip through. Up until he went completely out of control.

180 Instead of bans , let's repeal every gun law put on the books since 1930 . Betcha it wouldn't affect crime numbers in any significant way . Probably cause the numbers to continue their downward trend . It would also allow the BATF to concentrate on moonshiners and cigg smugglers , or they could transfer into the food service or housekeeping industries .

182 But the tidbit I find most interesting was this, regarding Lunatic Punkass Shooter's time with the local Buddhist temple in Fort Worth: A temple member said Alexis could chant better than some of the Thai worshippers. But the vet was disgruntled over military dismissal. “He thought he never got a promotion because of the color of his skin,” said the fellow congregant, Ty Thairintr. Odds we hear anything else about that in the rest of the mainstream motherfucking media? Probably nil. Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Assault Hobbit Chelsea at September 17, 2013 01:18 PM (4df7R) When I was in the Navy as an Enlisted member, you had to take the advancement exam for pay grades E-4, E-5, E-6 and E-7. I made E-6 in six years and that's with the time in rank in between each pay grades...then again I did come in as an E-3. . But back to my point...you have to a) pass the test, b) make the cutoff score and c) have evaluations that recommend you for advancement. If you are a raggedy ass worker, which may be the case with him, then you won't make it. His fucking SKIN COLOR had nothing to do with it! I am so fucking tired of these assholes hiding behind the shade of their skin. And the same goes for women hiding behind their sex. Anyway...my $0.02.

It sounds to me like    Lunatic Punkass Shooter   had zero direction in life and was trying to find something to give him a sense of purpose.

He   joined the Navy reserves and sucked at it.   They kicked him out.

He joined a Buddhist temple and seemed to be doing well at it, if that    can be said of attending a temple.   But    chanting and meditating only work if    they  accomplish what they're meant to accomplish: namely bringing peace and calm to a person's internal self.   Sounds like this guy was TRYING to find that   but    couldn't get past his   real life hang-ups (like the "damn racists wouldn't give me a promotion!" argument).

Then he goes to the VA for treatment of mental disorders.  Again, trying to get an outside actor to heal what was wrong inside.   Clearly it didn't work, or didn't have time to work.

This guy was a sick man.  He shouldn't have had any kind of clearance, let alone a job at the Navy Yard.   If he'd remained a waiter at the Happy Bowl in Fort Worth, twelve people may be alive today who are dead now.

Multiple people fucked up multiple times along the way   with this guy,   either    by   allowing    him    to coast on minor offenses or simply shuffling him somewhere else to become someone else's problem.     In the end he is the    murderer   and all the guilt lies with him and him alone, but there are a lot of people who      helped     put the turtle on that post.

AR-15 shotguns are not "make-believe" and banning them would be as pointless (and stupid) as all the other cosmetic gun bans.  These are just otherwise normal shotguns that are made up to look like AR-15 rifles; they're not any more or less dangerous.

What's the point?  Well, the AR-15 platform is pretty popular and if you're already familiar with using one, then it makes a sort of sense to have your defensive shotgun have a similar feel and controls.

This is actually true.

The press and anti-gun crowd love to rail on "machine guns" (even though they've been effectively unavailable to the general public for more than 70 years).

But the fact is, these things are incredibly hard to control during use, and people using them are highly prone to wasting ammo.  That's why full auto capability was REMOVED from the military M16. . .it was too easy for infantry to deplete their magazines quickly during combat.

If all these lunatic mass-shooters were using full-auto guns, they'd likely be burning through their ammo stocks much faster, mostly in waste.  That's preferable to the contrary, of firing only one shot at a time.

You know, I looked her up and read her bio, which is written like someone else wrote it but it's obv that it's her, and the first thing I thought when I saw her and read that was.....a little unkind. Probably because they're pieces of crap with little real-world value.

But if you really want one, and you already have an AR-15 pattern rifle, you can buy just the .410 gauge upper conversion to convert your already existing Ar-15 into a shotgun.

Something like this:
http://tinyurl.com/nc2ouwt

Best thing about this, is that since the upper doesn't contain its own receiver, its not legally a "gun" and you can pay cash for it and have it mailed directly to your house, legally.

Bad thing about it, its a piece of crap.

Assuming enough practice, you can probably do it with most of these, but I've tried a full auto M16 and found it "difficult" to control.

Submachine guns are a lot easier to keep on target in full auto fire, mostly because they're designed better for that purpose and also because they use lower-recoiling pistol rounds.

From experience, the MP5 is reasonably easy to fire in controlled bursts, if you want to.   I've heard Uzis are as well, but never had the "privilege".

Not really. It illustrates the folly of having only one or two armed guards at a facility. Makes it very easy for a perp to take out one guard and avoid the other, or take out both, and then have unimpeded freedom to kill as he pleases. If numerous people in a facility have carry weapons, or access to hidden stored weapons, there would be a chance for somebody to bring a weapon to bear and return fire.

It's got a male protagonist, which is sadly rare in YA these days, the kid has an interesting POV, he makes the stupid decisions that you make when you're young and the little romance subplot actually plays well because when you're that age does that girl like me is exactly as important as is the world ending. Be warned, though, it's the first in a series and by the end of the book you have no clue what's going on. That plays fair though because neither does Our Hero and it's told from his pov.

330 327 In all seriousness, the shooter using the guards own
weapons against his victims kinda discredits the idea of letting school
teachers/guards have access to firearms in an emergency. :/
===

So what's the alternative, having NO armed guards at all?

The fact is, no armed guard is going to survive a sneak-attack by someone with a concealed weapon who knows how to use it.   Human reaction time is too slow for that.

You need multiple armed individuals, better checkpoints, and better training.

All the arguments the Left uses to justify legalizing drugs apply with equal force to making guns illegal: black market, new class of criminals, prison overcrowding and so on.  But you do not have a specific constitutional right to own drugs.  Nor can you defend yourself with drugs.  Well, not easily anyway.

The PTSD sob story seems to have done the trick , when it should have done the opposite, and made it more imperative than ever label him unfit for certain activities with a conviction. The police report is full of little liars tells on Alexis' part and the prosecutor shouldn't have cut him a break despite the risks of what he couldn't absolutely prove (that A. did it deliberately).

.

.Civilian Prosecutors will do that sometimes if the crime isn't way too serious.  But from my experience (and I have signed at least 5,000 DD 214's in my career as a Navy Chief and a Civilian doing the same job) once someone gets hurt or firearms are involved all bets are off.

As far as him being kicked out of the Navy for a pattern of misconduct, that is not really hard to do.  One Mast with a Page 13 warning can do it, if the member gets in trouble again, automatic processing if you want it.  I have seen hundreds of those cases.  As long as an OTH is not involved and the member has less than 6 years, no Admin Board.  A simple letter of Notification starts the 10 day process.  They will be on their way in less than 2 weeks start to finish.

Not really.

First of all, you can't (legally) own an AR-15 crossbow if the AR-15 receiver its built on is illegal.

But regardless, after banning every other sort of arm, the gun banners would eventually get around to banning crossbows too  (as well as muzzle-loading single-shot black powder arms, etc).

424 The inconvenient facts for gun grabbers

AUSTRALIA: MORE VIOLENT CRIME DESPITE GUN BAN

April 13, 2009

It is a common fantasy that gun bans make society safer.  In 2002 -- five years after enacting its gun ban -- the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime.  In fact, the percent of murders committed with a firearm was the highest it had ever been in 2006 (16.3 percent), says the D.C. Examiner.

Even Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:

-In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
-Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
-Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.

Moreover, Australia and the United States -- where no gun-ban exists -- both experienced similar decreases in murder rates:

- Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9 percent decrease; without a gun ban, America's rate dropped 31.7 percent.

- During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
- Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
- Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.
- At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.
- Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women.

While this doesn't prove that more guns would impact crime rates, it does prove that gun control is a flawed policy.  Furthermore, this highlights the most important point: gun banners promote failed policy regardless of the consequences to the people who must live with them, says the Examiner.

425 Amid NSA Revelations, Brazil's Leader Postpones U.S. Trip 1:39 PM, SEP 17, 2013 • BY DANIEL HALPER Send to Kindle Single PagePrintLarger TextSmaller TextAlerts The White House announces that Brazilian leader President Dilma Rousseff told President Obama that she's postponing her planned trip to the United States: Yesterday, the President spoke by telephone with President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil to follow-up on their meeting in St. Petersburg and Ambassador Rice’s meeting with the Foreign Minister of Brazil last week. The United States and Brazil enjoy a strategic partnership rooted in shared democratic values and in the desire to advance broad-based economic growth and job creation. President Obama’s invitation to President Rousseff for the first State Visit of his second term is a reflection of the importance he places on this growing global partnership and the close bonds between the American and Brazilian people. The President has said that he understands and regrets the concerns disclosures of alleged U.S. intelligence activities have generated in Brazil and made clear that he is committed to working together with President Rousseff and her government in diplomatic channels to move beyond this issue as a source of tension in our bilateral relationship. As the President previously stated, he has directed a broad review of U.S. intelligence posture, but the process will take several months to complete. And the Disses just keep on coming. Nobody, and I mean NO BODY, likes this guy.

====

Cops use pump shotguns because they're

1. Cheap
2. Highly reliable, and
3. Readily available, both as "legacy" department weapons and as new production.

Bluntly, 98% of cops will never have the need for suppressive fire, or to take a shot past 50 yards, and probably 98% of them SHOULD NOT be taking that kind of shot anyway.  When the chips are down, most cops have a hard enough time hitting man-sized targets with handguns at under 20 yards.

Why outfit cops with $1500 Benelli M1014 shotguns, when they can get the exact same utility out of $400 pump Remingtons or Mossbergs?

Be sure you buy the correct one. One is designed for Carbine the other for Rifle. Its a pre-set optic. Early on Marines were ransacking Non-Lethal Stores for ACOGs that were designed for Carbines and using them on their M16A4s. There is a distinct difference in ballistic profile between the two weapons.

"Yes, but." Or "no, except".

Take your pick.

Technologies change over time....and the two methods of shooting require different methods of teaching, and learning. Since our Marines will most often be firing their weapons with optical sights, that's how they should learn to shoot. 447 Obama Doctrine: a disarmed military is a safe military. Forget about the mass casualties. Sheriffs Biden and Kerry: Only fools and losers join the military. We are embroiled in a War OF Terror. A most disgusting aspect is that President Obama orders the destabilization of our military personnel, the destabilization of nations, AND the empowerment of terrorists to rule the world of disarmed people. The US Government's Leaders actually place al-Qaeda and The Muslim Brotherhood uber alles. And politicians expect American taxpayers to perpetuate this insanity for our own good. In any other country, maybe. But not in America. I vote "Yankee Ingenuity" "Love means never having to say you're sorry." ??? Pfft. Exceptionalism means we never make a mistake? Exceptionalism means we never correct an error? When we realize we're off the mark, and stuck between a rock and a hard spot, we needn't "go" to figure. The politicians' War OF Terror is what's being sold as if patriotism. All the while, in time, the US Constitutional Governance undergoes socialist revisionism into the worst authoritarian regime; UNLESS Americans stop the insanity spawned by corrupt politicians who owe their wealth to global corporatists, NONE loyal to our US Constitution. Our politicians profit by legislating and mandating and issuing orders to benefit THEIR vested private profits, again at the expense of the Middle Class, the tax payers, and the entire concept of inalienable rights as self evident. Given the current status of war being guerrilla warfare, the word "conventional" undergoes revisionism. Guerrilla warfare is the new conventional warfare: and the world is the battlefield. Our military personnel should be armed for self defense at ALL TIMES on our military bases, on US Military installations at home or abroad. And given guerrilla warfare as the current convention, our Military personnel should not be handicapped, ordered to stand down until they've been exploded. Then Obama grants permission to fire back. The Leftist argument to further disarm potential victims, for their own good (consider well which "they" benefit), shreds the Left's deceitful self image as "nice" people. They illuminate their own blood lust. And the Neoconservative argument to further arm the terrorists who further disarm the ME civilian victims of terrorism, for their own good, to inflict the genocide of indigenous Christian populations for their own good, illuminates blood lust as well. Compassionate Conservatism?

So Piers Morgan agrees that the type of firearm used doesn't matter, and therefore any ban of a specific type would have no impact whatsoever on the frequency or severity of mass shooting incidents.

I don't know whether my son is using battery powered optics or not. I've sent him an email asking....but if/when the balloon goes up he focuses on his gear, and that of his team. The rest of the consumable goodies are already pre-positioned.....toilet paper, C4, Det Cord, Primers, and batteries for different types of equipment. I'm pretty sure that if the Marine Corps approved variant of the ACOG requires batteries, they're included in their basic deployment stocks.

Even if someone forgot the batteries, the Marines will simply remove ACOG's, and install rear peep sights, and continue fighting.

464 I'm seeing a pattern that is not good for the 'psychiatric' industry. I've been saying that for a while, but *crickets*. When they pull out the script pad, they *have* to know -- and I'm assuming a 133 plus IQ to get through med school -- just what in the ever-living-hell are the side effects. Think the FDA could 'red line' certain drugs and require signed consent before administering? Nothing draconian, just inform the parents, wife, friends, etc that the side effects of this drug *most likely* include thoughts of homicide and/or suicide? So they could get a chance to lock away any guns they might have? Watch the drug using unit a little more carefully? Tell the person to get off the video game and join reality for a little while? NOPE... CRICKETS. So the carnage continues and the assault on second amendment rights continues and the left sticks its nose up in the air, as if on higher ground, while the bodies stack like cord-wood. The left doesn't *really* want to end or restrain the violence, they want to take away our guns. We're the bigger threat.

465 Some eyewitness who know what they are talking about as they are active and former Navy saw an rifle like gun being used. It was used to shot at them but it was aimed over their heads.

They might be wrong but there might be something in the FBI report that splits hairs as he did not have an AR-15 on his body when he was killed. He still might have used one and dropped it when empty. No one will carry a empty gun if you have nothing to reload it with. It will be know when they do the autopsy is a .223, 9mm or 12 gauge killed them. There might be a missing gun in a side room that has yet to be cleared or checked and the murder weapon.

466 Screw that AR-15 crap. I want a nuclear attack submarine. I have a 37 acre lake to put it in and everything.

467 "Lots of confusion over exactly what guns Wash Navy Yard shooter used. But do you think it matters to the victims?" It clearly doesn't matter to the press or pundits like Piers, since they never bothered to find out before automatically spewing the usual dishonest narrative.

469 So commonsense gun control And the Middle Class Though some favor unmitigated evil, and others directionless idealism. I say let's not put partisan politics ahead of the good of the country. There is no time to waste. And everyone secretly agrees with me except they're afraid of Rush Limbaugh.
