— Ace No serious. Last night CNN broke the news that the Navy Yard shooter used an AR-15 shotgun.
We must ban this weapon that has already been banned by reason of Not Existing.
I don't know, would this be a good stunt? If Republicans actually passed a bill to ban the weapon that doesn't exist in order to embarrass the media?
Probably not.
Piers Morgan's entire show was dedicated to the proposition that an AR-15 (whether of the rifle or shotgun variation) was used in the killings. Indeed, one might say that his entire life has been dedicated to this proposition.
Except it wasn't:
FBI Washington field office just confirmed gunman was NOT armed with AR15. Spokesperson says 1 shotgun and 2 pistols recovered
— Pamela Brown (@PamelaBrownCNN) September 17, 2013
Yesterday #BuzzfeedAndrewKazcinsky baited the NRA by noting they weren't commenting when facts were still unknown.
I dunno. Seems like a wise principle. Perhaps more of the Scolding Teacher Media would do well to follow their example.
Update: After a day of screaming about AR-15s, Piers Morgan's twitter stream is now oddly absent of references to them.
No retraction, no correction. Just shifting from AR-15s to guns in general.
Which is precisely why people will not permit it to be banned -- because they understand that those who want to ban will shift, as abruptly and dishonestly as Piers Morgan, from AR-15s to guns in general.
Piers Speaks... After devoting a show to the Scourge of the AR-15, he now has a different position: "What difference does it make?"
Lots of confusion over exactly what guns Wash Navy Yard shooter used. But do you think it matters to the victims? #GunControlNow

With the shoulder thing that goes up, a bayonet, a compass in the stock, and this thing that tells time.
Loaded with high-capacity magazine banana clips full of 'cop-killer' bullet cartridges.
With the optional double-barreled over/under 40mm grenade launcher AND the flame-thrower.
And, it was BLACK (possibly 'WHITE-Black'), and in the 40 megawatt range.

Actually, ace, depending on the reports one might have listened to at any time yesterday, the Lunatic Punkass Shooter (my name for the bastard) was using a black semi-automatic assault Glock AK-15 shotgun rifle, with the shoulder-thingy that goes up.
Parker in the previous thread summed it up most accurately:
Actually, from the initial reports, he had a fully-automatic rapid-fire high-powered military-style folding-stock silenced flash-suppressed 9mm 12-gauge Assault Glock AK-15 shotgun.
With the shoulder thing that goes up, a bayonet, a compass in the stock, and this thing that tells time.

He appears to have entered with only the shotgun.
Link from Drudge:
Aaron Alexis may have picked up and used victimsÂ’ weapons: investigators
The officials said Aaron Alexis of Fort Worth, Texas, a 34-year-old discharged Navy engineer, entered the building with a Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun that heÂ’d purchased last week in Lorton, Va., and was later found with two additional weapons, a Glock handgun and an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle.
One scenario authorities were investigating was that he obtianed the handgun and the rifle at the scene, possibly from victims. But officials cautioned the evidence analysis was still very fluid Monday night.

The problem is, you wouldn't embarrass them. Because they'd simply memory hole what they said and make the story, "look, look! Dumbass Rethuglicans are teh stoopidz! They don't even know what kind of guns exist!"
A far better tactic, IMO, would be simply to bring the subject up at each instance of face time, e.g.,
"Well, Senator Poppins, don't you think this calls for more gun control?"
"I don't know, Wolf. Could you refresh my memory as to the kind of gun used?"
"Of course. An AK-47."
"No, that can't be right, Wolf. You see, here I have a transcript of your network's reporting. You said the gun used was an AR-15. I've never seen one of those, so I wonder if you could show me one?"

Your proposal (albeit tongue in cheek) actually makes sense. Start with banning the small hand phaser from Star Trek I. Not the side arm version (cannot conceal it) but the small pocket version. If that gets through, there is hope for adding other mythical guns.
I feel safer already, which is all that really matters, right?

I posted this on the previous thread, but it's relevant to this thread, too, since it's all about the MFM's ironclad devotion to The Narrative above all else.
-------------
So this is a cute little nugget from the NY Post story about the Lunatic Punkass Shooter (http://tiny.cc/1nfk3w):
Born and raised in Queens, Alexis lived on 77th Road in Kew Gardens Hills. He attended Hillcrest HS and bounced around Brooklyn, Staten Island and Harlem. In 2000, he obtained a rifle permit from the NYPD to shoot at local firing ranges, sources said. Alexis, 34, spent nearly four years in the Navy from May 2007 until 2011.
In other words, he was a New Yorker, not a Texan. Okay, MFM?
But the tidbit I find most interesting was this, regarding Lunatic Punkass Shooter's time with the local Buddhist temple in Fort Worth:
A temple member said Alexis could chant better than some of the Thai worshippers. But the vet was disgruntled over military dismissal. “He thought he never got a promotion because of the color of his skin,” said the fellow congregant, Ty Thairintr.
Odds we hear anything else about that in the rest of the mainstream motherfucking media? Probably nil.

Then while he was in the military, he had an extensive string of offenses, including what the press refer to as "failures to show up for work". Once again, the media (who have essentially no exposure to and no interest in the military) show their total incomprehension of military matters.
When someone is a uniformed member of the armed services, "failure to show up for work" is spelled A-W-O-L, and it's a criminal offense. The sort of thing that when it is a repeated pattern, as it was here, typically leads to courts-martial and/or dishonorable discharges.
Instead, again, this guy skated without any substantive punishment, and he was given an honorable discharge despite being an absent, insubordinate, disorderly shitbird. Once again preserving his ability to buy weapons and to get a clearance.
Pretty clear what's been going on. Like Saint Trayvon Of The Bloodied Hoodie, this guy was operating behind the diversity deflector shield. Committing offenses that should have landed him in bad trouble, and gotten him punished, and thereby kept him and others around him out of worse trouble later on.
But instead of having useful corrective consequences ensue, he was protected by his magic melanin layer, with the authorities, military and civilian alike, discreetly letting him slip through. Up until he went completely out of control.

I am not a supporter of any gun ban whatsoever, but please note that many different companies make very popular assault rifle shotguns, including, for example, Saiga, MKA 1919, etc. They do exist and thus please do not give the gun grabbers any ideas.
I fully understand the point your making, but would caution you in overstating that these types of weapons do not exist. That is not entirely accurate either. Just sayin'...

It sounds to me like Lunatic Punkass Shooter had zero direction in life and was trying to find something to give him a sense of purpose.
He joined the Navy reserves and sucked at it. They kicked him out.
He joined a Buddhist temple and seemed to be doing well at it, if that can be said of attending a temple. But chanting and meditating only work if they accomplish what they're meant to accomplish: namely bringing peace and calm to a person's internal self. Sounds like this guy was TRYING to find that but couldn't get past his real life hang-ups (like the "damn racists wouldn't give me a promotion!" argument).
Then he goes to the VA for treatment of mental disorders. Again, trying to get an outside actor to heal what was wrong inside. Clearly it didn't work, or didn't have time to work.
This guy was a sick man. He shouldn't have had any kind of clearance, let alone a job at the Navy Yard. If he'd remained a waiter at the Happy Bowl in Fort Worth, twelve people may be alive today who are dead now.
Multiple people fucked up multiple times along the way with this guy, either by allowing him to coast on minor offenses or simply shuffling him somewhere else to become someone else's problem. In the end he is the murderer and all the guilt lies with him and him alone, but there are a lot of people who helped put the turtle on that post.

AR-15 shotguns are not "make-believe" and banning them would be as pointless (and stupid) as all the other cosmetic gun bans. These are just otherwise normal shotguns that are made up to look like AR-15 rifles; they're not any more or less dangerous.
What's the point? Well, the AR-15 platform is pretty popular and if you're already familiar with using one, then it makes a sort of sense to have your defensive shotgun have a similar feel and controls.

CNN's broadcast license renewal could probably be challenged on serial inaccuracy grounds.
There's a lot of mounting evidence, small and large.
If 500 SME bloggers started to dissect every minute of their broadcasts for inaccuricies and flat out untruths, I'm betting several dozen examples PER DAY, EVERY DAY, could be offered as evidence of their unfitness for license renewal.

This is actually true.
The press and anti-gun crowd love to rail on "machine guns" (even though they've been effectively unavailable to the general public for more than 70 years).
But the fact is, these things are incredibly hard to control during use, and people using them are highly prone to wasting ammo. That's why full auto capability was REMOVED from the military M16. . .it was too easy for infantry to deplete their magazines quickly during combat.
If all these lunatic mass-shooters were using full-auto guns, they'd likely be burning through their ammo stocks much faster, mostly in waste. That's preferable to the contrary, of firing only one shot at a time.

My method is to pitch the canister a few feet away from the deck, then retrieve it by extending a broom or mop out towards the canister, hooking the edge, dragging it back, and then beating the living hell out of it with said broom or mop until I'm pretty sure whatever might have been living in or on it is dead.

So if present gun laws were enforced he should not have had one. This suggests more gun laws may not be a panacea.

Probably because they're pieces of crap with little real-world value.
But if you really want one, and you already have an AR-15 pattern rifle, you can buy just the .410 gauge upper conversion to convert your already existing Ar-15 into a shotgun.
Something like this:
http://tinyurl.com/nc2ouwt
Best thing about this, is that since the upper doesn't contain its own receiver, its not legally a "gun" and you can pay cash for it and have it mailed directly to your house, legally.
Bad thing about it, its a piece of crap.

Assuming enough practice, you can probably do it with most of these, but I've tried a full auto M16 and found it "difficult" to control.
Submachine guns are a lot easier to keep on target in full auto fire, mostly because they're designed better for that purpose and also because they use lower-recoiling pistol rounds.
From experience, the MP5 is reasonably easy to fire in controlled bursts, if you want to. I've heard Uzis are as well, but never had the "privilege".

Not really. It illustrates the folly of having only one or two armed guards at a facility. Makes it very easy for a perp to take out one guard and avoid the other, or take out both, and then have unimpeded freedom to kill as he pleases. If numerous people in a facility have carry weapons, or access to hidden stored weapons, there would be a chance for somebody to bring a weapon to bear and return fire.

I don't disagree with that likely scenario but wouldn't you think that in this age of technology and after 9/11 that law enforcement across the nation could access whether someone had been arrested previously for similar or worse charges? At the least , his ability to own a firearm should have come into question if his 2004 arrest had been ascertained.

So what's the alternative, having NO armed guards at all?
The fact is, no armed guard is going to survive a sneak-attack by someone with a concealed weapon who knows how to use it. Human reaction time is too slow for that.
You need multiple armed individuals, better checkpoints, and better training.

All the arguments the Left uses to justify legalizing drugs apply with equal force to making guns illegal: black market, new class of criminals, prison overcrowding and so on. But you do not have a specific constitutional right to own drugs. Nor can you defend yourself with drugs. Well, not easily anyway.
But they obviously relish the chance to jail most of the people in "flyover country". Camps, lots of camps.

.Civilian Prosecutors will do that sometimes if the crime isn't way too serious. But from my experience (and I have signed at least 5,000 DD 214's in my career as a Navy Chief and a Civilian doing the same job) once someone gets hurt or firearms are involved all bets are off.
As far as him being kicked out of the Navy for a pattern of misconduct, that is not really hard to do. One Mast with a Page 13 warning can do it, if the member gets in trouble again, automatic processing if you want it. I have seen hundreds of those cases. As long as an OTH is not involved and the member has less than 6 years, no Admin Board. A simple letter of Notification starts the 10 day process. They will be on their way in less than 2 weeks start to finish.

First of all, you can't (legally) own an AR-15 crossbow if the AR-15 receiver its built on is illegal.
But regardless, after banning every other sort of arm, the gun banners would eventually get around to banning crossbows too (as well as muzzle-loading single-shot black powder arms, etc).

If this shooter was on the 4th floor and shooting with his shotgun/pistols, how was he making hits from that distance? Was he using slugs? Gotta be.

AUSTRALIA: MORE VIOLENT CRIME DESPITE GUN BAN
April 13, 2009
It is a common fantasy that gun bans make society safer. In 2002 -- five years after enacting its gun ban -- the Australian Bureau of Criminology acknowledged there is no correlation between gun control and the use of firearms in violent crime. In fact, the percent of murders committed with a firearm was the highest it had ever been in 2006 (16.3 percent), says the D.C. Examiner.
Even Australia's Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research acknowledges that the gun ban had no significant impact on the amount of gun-involved crime:
-In 2006, assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
-Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
-Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.
Moreover, Australia and the United States -- where no gun-ban exists -- both experienced similar decreases in murder rates:
- Between 1995 and 2007, Australia saw a 31.9 percent decrease; without a gun ban, America's rate dropped 31.7 percent.
- During the same time period, all other violent crime indices increased in Australia: assault rose 49.2 percent and robbery 6.2 percent.
- Sexual assault -- Australia's equivalent term for rape -- increased 29.9 percent.
- Overall, Australia's violent crime rate rose 42.2 percent.
- At the same time, U.S. violent crime decreased 31.8 percent: rape dropped 19.2 percent; robbery decreased 33.2 percent; aggravated assault dropped 32.2 percent.
- Australian women are now raped over three times as often as American women.
While this doesn't prove that more guns would impact crime rates, it does prove that gun control is a flawed policy. Furthermore, this highlights the most important point: gun banners promote failed policy regardless of the consequences to the people who must live with them, says the Examiner.

Wait, don't ban the AR-15 shotgun! It exists and I own one. ATI makes an AR in .410. Not really very practical but very cool, which is why I got it. And now I have an interesting conversational gambit in the wake of the latest "tragedy". Never "crime" or "atrocity"; always a "tragedy" as if there were no human agency involved, just and angry God or uncaring or malevolent nature or fate.

Cops use pump shotguns because they're
1. Cheap
2. Highly reliable, and
3. Readily available, both as "legacy" department weapons and as new production.
Bluntly, 98% of cops will never have the need for suppressive fire, or to take a shot past 50 yards, and probably 98% of them SHOULD NOT be taking that kind of shot anyway. When the chips are down, most cops have a hard enough time hitting man-sized targets with handguns at under 20 yards.
Why outfit cops with $1500 Benelli M1014 shotguns, when they can get the exact same utility out of $400 pump Remingtons or Mossbergs?

The ACOG is Marine Corps approved....and that group is not known for pampering equipment. Once the Marines have kicked something around for a few years, and they still like it, it's safe to assume it's sturdy, and reliable. Even then, recruits are still taught how to fight with bayonets, still taught hand to hand, and still
learn to put rounds on target through iron sights, (but they learn to shoot, and qualify on optics first).

The ACOG is a fine device. I am not a neo-luddite however BRM should be precisely that Basic Rifle Marksmanship and the Marines, Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen should all be able to hit the target 65% of the time with the Mk 1 eyeball first.
Sorry not negotiable.

442 As a foreigner, may I ask the blindingly obvious question as to why the Navy Yard was not crawling with armed Marines with their safeties off before this shit even went down?
If the answer is "Because Obama", he needs to be arrested, tried for treason and shot.
Navy Yard is an Acquisition Command. Mostly civilian staff. Uniformed Sailors and Marines do not carry weapons unless their duty position requires it. Armed security is the province of private security.

Be sure you buy the correct one. One is designed for Carbine the other for Rifle. Its a pre-set optic. Early on Marines were ransacking Non-Lethal Stores for ACOGs that were designed for Carbines and using them on their M16A4s. There is a distinct difference in ballistic profile between the two weapons.

"Yes, but." Or "no, except".
Take your pick.
Technologies change over time....and the two methods of shooting require different methods of teaching, and learning. Since our Marines will most often be firing their weapons with optical sights, that's how they should learn to shoot. What counts at the end of the day is the number of bad guys that have been sent off to make sweet sweet love to their 72 virgins.

I've been here long enough to remember how the Pederast harry reid gutted a bill and resurrected it to pass Obama care under reconciliation.
Any funny stuff with bills to ban phony guns would surely be rearranged to ban everything from anti tank and anti drone guns to soft pellet air guns and I don't trust our nitwits to be able to block jack shi.!

Errrrr, the ACOG doesn't use batteries. The reticle illumination is via the fiberoptic tube on top of the optic in daylight and tritium at night.
However, the Aimpoint red dots used by the Army are battery powered.

The Army's first Gen ACOGs used batteries....ACOG's fiber optic backups were not standard for I think two generations.

the fiber optic back ups are good for non low light conditions...
I bought the see-all sight for wife recently...
I am in no way a fuddy duddy for its own sake...
From what I have seen at Ft Polk and been told by the JRTC instructors it is easier to train a classically trained marksman on using reflex sights than it is for Reflex trained guys to go Iron...
of course I also argue the push for the M-4 uber alles is stupid so you can ignore me if you'd like.
Posted by: sven10077 at September 17, 2013 11:13 AM (9jfyN)
"But do you think it matters to the victims?"
So Piers Morgan agrees that the type of firearm used doesn't matter, and therefore any ban of a specific type would have no impact whatsoever on the frequency or severity of mass shooting incidents.

I don't know whether my son is using battery powered optics or not. I've sent him an email asking....but if/when the balloon goes up he focuses on his gear, and that of his team. The rest of the consumable goodies are already pre-positioned.....toilet paper, C4, Det Cord, Primers, and batteries for different types of equipment. I'm pretty sure that if the Marine Corps approved variant of the ACOG requires batteries, they're included in their basic deployment stocks.
Even if someone forgot the batteries, the Marines will simply remove ACOG's, and install rear peep sights, and continue fighting.

Sorry, I just got to this thread but this cracked me up to no end. Well Played Parker, well played...
I think CNN confirmed this...

They might be wrong but there might be something in the FBI report that splits hairs as he did not have an AR-15 on his body when he was killed. He still might have used one and dropped it when empty. No one will carry a empty gun if you have nothing to reload it with. It will be know when they do the autopsy is a .223, 9mm or 12 gauge killed them. There might be a missing gun in a side room that has yet to be cleared or checked and the murder weapon.
