One of the moonbat left's counters to Rush Limbaugh, Air America, briefly fizzled, and is now gone. And now, happily, other lib talkers are also going the way of the dodo. According to this:
2014 will mark the beginning of a massive change for liberal talk radio across the country. In New York, WWRL 1600 AM will flip to Spanish-language music and talk, throwing Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, and Alan Colmes off the air. In Los Angeles, KTLK 1150 will be dumping Stephanie Miller, Rhodes, Bill Press and David Cruz off the air in favor of Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. In San Francisco, KNEW 960 will leave Miller, Hartmann, and Mike Malloy without a radio home in the market.
No doubt the progressives will complain that they're the victims of a conspiracy hatched by eeeeeevil corporations to silence their courageous dissenting voices. My response is to point out that in a sane and just world, most of the lib talk guys would be handing out towels in men's restrooms. Also, that if the mainstream media had been doing its job, Rush Limbaugh wouldn't have one. They don't seem to understand this.
I have always wondered why liberals thought they could succeed in talk radio. It seems to me obvious that the main problem they would have to face is one of market saturation. Conservative talk radio has successfully branded itself as 'the other voice'. I remember the early days of Rush Limbaugh where he'd get callers thanking him profusely just for airing views that they long held but never heard voiced on any of the big media outlets. Some restaurants even set up 'Rush rooms' were they would pipe in Rush's show to customers who wanted to hear it.
But with liberal talk radio, none of this is necessary. If you want to hear liberal and progressive views, all you have to do is turn on your TV or pick up a newspaper. The problem is not hearing liberal views, the problem is, where can you go to hear something else? Even Fox News. Liberals don't understand when you try to explain to them that Fox News isn't really "conservative", it's just a mainstream media outlet that allows some conservatives to talk on it. It only sounds conservative because you get to hear, however briefly, something other than the all-pervasive kultursmog of the liberal left.
But getting back to market saturation, I had to laugh when Air America announced they were going to set up an outlet in the San Francisco market. I thought, did they even research this?. Not only does SF have the alphabet networks and NPR, there's also KPFA, a radio station across the Bay in Berkeley that has been the voice of the progressive left for over 60 years. KPFA shows are professionally produced and presented, while over on Air America, it was pretty much amateur hour all the way. So what exactly was Air America going to be providing that Bay Area radio listeners can't get in the other progressive outlets?
Another problem was that some of those Air America guys sounded like spittle-flecked rage monkeys. This couldn't have helped.
So lib talk radio is a miserable failure. It failed in San Francisco. It failed all over the place. Even the Air America station in my college-town-liberal home of Eugene, Oregon gave it up after only a year or two. I listened to it a couple of times, but the local NPR affiliate did a much better job of broadcasting progressive-left news and opinions.
It boils down to this: if I'm a lefty, what does lib radio have to offer that I can't already get on MSNBC? Other than no Chris Matthews, I mean.

Muse, you live in Eugene? I went to college there. Eugene Bible College (Now "New Hope Christian) class of '97. It's a great town, but I couldn't settle there with my allergies.
The wife says Euphoria is having a half-off post-Christmas sale. It does us no good, but I thought you might like to know.
Great article, as always. I remember first hearing Rush in the early '90s. It was, as you say, so wonderful to hear what I believed voiced in the public arena.

While I get a bit of joy from the dismal failure of Air America (why would libs name themselves after a CIA operation?), this is going to make Limbaugh and others moved to 1150 AM completely inaccessible to many in the LA market. Though I don't really bother with Hannity now. I can't say I understand his popularity. He seems to be trying above his intellectual capacity much of the time. It may just be his vocal mannerisms. I find O'Reilly irritating for that reason. (Along with his general cluelessness on several subjects that he choose to discuss anyway.)

Its on the radio. So far as I know MSNBC isn't.
But you're spot on.
NPR is available in every media market in the country. While personally I find most of it to be odiously liberal in perspective, and typically can't listen to it for more than 3 minutes, its professionally produced and clean. If you love liberal radio, you can pretty much start and end there.
What something like "Air America" offers (at least in theory) is a purely POLITICAL liberal radio slant. Just not sure that the liberal audience is really into that.

I was in one of those "Rush rooms", back in the early 90s. Must have been about '93/'94. At a nice DC restaurant. Taken there by a Clinton Admin. appointee who was an acquaintance at the time. Working for one of the worst cabinet appointees (and that's saying something, though of course by our current standard those folks were churchillian). And he loved it. But I think it was just that his nasty streak (which was very large) liked the snark about the unpresidential nature of Clinton and his nightmare spouse. So I was intro'd to Rush by a left-wing Clinton drone. Hmmm.
Even then, I took Rush et al as infotainment, at best. Welcome and on the correct side of most issues, but not somewhere to actually learn anything, factually or analytically. But that's because I've been a public policy nerd since my early yute. The value to normal productive people is clear.
Will there ever be a radio talker with substance enough to actually listen to for insight (more than on occasion - the better ones do sometimes find a truffle)? Hannity is a genuine and nice guy, but ... well. Rush is fine but fairly surface and the self-focused act wore thin many years ago. Medved is a lightweight moral scold who actually seems as ignorant and misguided on lots of important issues as your typical NPR listener. Levin is fine on serious constitutional matters but pretty much defaults to invective instead of substantive analysis (I understand why but .....) and of course the histrionic yelling gets old quick.
Hewitt is mostly a GOP establishment apologist, though he has actually been driven to some sensible (outraged) positions on occasion since 2010, is pathetically craven to media idiots he interviews so that he can stay in the club (I guess), is typically lightweight on foreign policy (even with good instincts), and really falls down in being a silly apologists on legal/judicial matters where he has the background to speak with some authority (his jaw-dropping musings on whether Roberts engaged in some super-subtle strategery on his beclowning O-care "ruling" are pretty astonishingly stupid from someone with a legal background - though, then again, the legal priesthood does seem unable to recognize how off the rails the judicial part of our system has gone).

Yup.
Heh. I used to listen to the 24-classical station when I lived in Syracuse; every morning at 6:45 they'd play a Sousa march and I'd wake up, every morning at 7 they'd play NPR news and I'd leap out of bed in disgust.

Sports talk radio is filthy with Ad Council spots. ESPN (ABC) has clearly been bought by the government. Among the thousand other things the next president has to do is eliminate any government advertising, with exception to military recruiting.

I'm also with you on Hannity.
His heart is in the right place, but he just lacks depth. Sometimes he has on good guests that can make up for that. . .most of the time, not.
But I'd still rather listen to Hannity almost any time than NPR.

Ditto. They're moving Hannity into the time slot formerly held by Medved during my drive home. I know not everyone likes Medved, and there are times when he's annoying, but FMM he's hands down the smartest and most interesting of the talk radio crowd. I can only take Hannity in very limited doses, usually when there's an ad on the other stations.

If you ever get a chance check out Bill Bennett's show. I think he calls it "morning in America".
Its not on in all markets, and it runs pretty early (either 6-7am or 5-7 am, something like that), but its basically pure substance, no invective, from a strictly Conservative viewpoint.

Ed Schultz, at least the few times I listened to him, was actually far, far better than clowns like Randi Rhodes, Stephanie Miller, Al Franken, and Bobby Kennedy Jr. Maybe he got worst (especially after the MSNBC show) but the few times I listened to him he actually supported closing the borders and challenged his listeners a little. Tom Hartmann (I think?) also challenged his listeners by pointing out that Bush wasn't the complete caricature the Left always pushed. He said that Bush was at least smart when you meet him in person.
The rest of Air America was just "Bush is incredibly dumb (and also an evil liar)" over and over again.
Randi Rhodes was literally crazy. She would interrupt her listerners' rants just so she could rant some more. "...but the torturing torturing torture!"
Stephanie Miller had a co-host who did the most obvious Bush parodies. (Duurrr, I'm stupid! Here's my stupid Bush laugh!) Her show was about as mature as a bra snap. Jon Stewart would play a clip of a Republican and make a face. Stephanie Miller's variation of that was to play a "You're a stinking pile of crap" song. That damn tune is stuck in my brain.
Al Franken had no energy at all. He was completely unsuitable for radio, which is why I think they had to give him a co-host just to keep people from falling asleep.
Bobby Kennedy and his partner (I forget who) on their Ring of Fire show would rant about the environment, mostly. I think it was Bobby who sounded so weak and frail.
Our local Air America changed itself to OBAMA Radio in 2008, about a week before it went off the air. Thank God.

I like Bennett's show, which is on in the morning here in DC, but I wish he would stop trying to make his voice deep. It sounds like he's gargling gravel. He's also developed that occupational hazard of talk radio hosts, the need to interrupt his guests constantly so that he can demonstrate his brilliance. Dude, I can hear you anytime. STFU and let me listen to the guest, or don't bother having him on.

Haven't offended my ears with NPR in many years, but still recall my favorite "NPR Dead Air Moment" (silence following a particularly stupid comment or question by an NPR host, so stupid that the field reporter or interviewee pauses to think how to even respond to such idiocy).
Driving down the 95 with my now-wife on a golf outing to NC or somewhere. Morning of the first big coordinate car-bombings in Baghdad, which targeted the Red Cross and police recruitment centers (imagine the quandary of "journalists" covering such events in figuring out who the vile criminals are?). Stupid NPR morning host asks incredibly stupid question: so will this hurt police recruiting? Silence. Field reporter: uhh ..... uhhh .... well, actually (name), this morning the lines are even longer, Iraqis are defying this sort of attack". Of course you have to be listening, know something, and know how to think to enjoy/suffer the phenomenon. Which excludes most NPR listeners (and most Americans, so elections would indicate). But hilarious, in a dark way.
Other awesome dead air moment was BBC (of course). NPR played the day's first BBC "news" show at o-dark-thirty, when I was often on the road (returning from hockey games). BBC host is interviewing an Israeli military spokesman, this was during one of Israel's periodic offensives in the territories following some worse-than-average Palestinian atrocity (late 1990s?). The Israeli was clearly not a native English-speaker, which is relevant. So the BBC host (in outstanding, arrogant smug BBCese) asks "when will your operations in (some West Bank town) end, when you've killed enough people?" Silence. The Israeli, almost certainly, is checking his language skills, not quite believing such an idiotic and insulting question would be asked. He then stammered out something like "oh, uh, no of course not, but we expect to meet our objectives there by tomorrow".
Anyway, if I ever suffered some inexplicable moment of optimism that this was a serious or respectable society, for therapy all I'd have to do would be to switch on NPR. And having listened to a lot of Radio Moscow back in the day, from within the USSR, it's no hyperbole to compare our electorate (or at least the "educated" coastal segment) to Soviet drones who actually took Soviet media seriously.

Agreed. But what the article is discussing is a man wearing little girl adornments to a public restaurant, and being all butt hurt that someone looked funny at him. Do it or don't, but don't whine about it when somebody else thinks you're kind of a puss. Real men don't care. Again, I have the firm conviction that he was mad that his kid didn't provide him with cover for something he wanted to do anyway.

Stern is a mix. Obviously most of it is lowbrow, and I wouldn't try to get any actual information off his show (especially not political), but there is a sort of "wink" there and his interviews are usually pretty good.
I remember he was interviewing the guitarist and vocalist from AC/DC right before the 2008 election and he asked who the guys were voting for. I almost fell out of my chair when the singer from AC/DC said "McCain" and that he was a "Tory" (ie conservative).
Not surprising to me that he held that view. . .just that he was willing to admit it on the air!

Yea. In a car is about the only time I turn a radio on these days.
Once in a while I stream some internet station, but its not a primary focus kinda thing, just background noise in a minimized window

Twice on NPR. Once long ago, topic didn't lend itself to political distortion so much (national NPR). Once a few years back, local NPR in a fairly large market. Topic was Iraq war and some sub-topics thereof. Show was normally a mix of interview and listener calls. After a few minutes, it was clear the host would not take calls. The fear and unease were almost palpable. Here he had someone who not only knew the subject and had spent years in direct contact with it, but was far smarter than his listenership (in a practical sense, on these topics). No way he was going to let one of his listeners get chewed to bits by a guest who was not dumbed-down like the "educated" NPR audience.
Guest just before me was a nice but clueless Iraqi woman who (like the dumbed down audience, presumably) seemed to think things in Iraq just happened because the Americans were there - ya know, water treatment plant openings with children's choirs had to be car-bombed, because, ya know, the Americans are there. And the Americans shooting back at people who shoot at them (and car-bomb events with children) was the problem in Baghdad - not the terrorist scum starting the shooting. I listened in the Green Room in horror and disgust, and laughing a bit thinking about the whiplash the poor local NPR audience was about to experience.

Tass had a piece about what was going on on the trapped ship. Apparently there's no rush. The science crew is just doing what they always do sampling testing, etc, the ship is not in danger of structural compromise, blah, blah.
Basically, shit is pretty normal research vessel ops other than being stuck.

What Purp said about radio applies somewhat to me as well. I can glean vastly more from a few minutes of reading than listening. One of the reasons I do most of my audiobook listening in the car is that the pace is too slow if I don't have something like driving to occupy part of my attention.
OTOH, there is a huge portion of the population that doesn't read much or at all. They need to be reached if the candidates we support are to win elections. For that we need a variety of voices to reach those who need to be informed. That means those voices have to appeal to people who aren't much like me. Probably my favorite radio guy is Mark Levin but only when he is in lecture mode as opposed to rant mode. During the 2008 election he did an entire show dissecting 'Rules For Radicals' as a guide to understanding who and what Obama is. If a few million swing voters could have been made to hear that broadcast it could have change the outcome of the election. It was that good. But I doubt anyone outside of Levin's established audience heard it. The GOP should have distributed MP3 files of that show through every possible venue.

"I'm also with you on Hannity.
His heart is in the right place, but he just lacks depth. Sometimes he has on good guests that can make up for that. . .most of the time, not."
Count the times Hannity says "now" in the first 3 minutes of his show; it's usually at least 10. He's the only prominent conservative talker who regularly gets out-argued by liberals. He used to have on Mike Farrell of MASH fame, who would routinely make Hannity look bad. There were plenty of conservative arguments to make, but Hannity would always just retreat to his talking points.
Yeah, his heart is the right place, but sometimes he does more harm than good.

The SF am radio market was dominated by KGO for 25 years, no one even came close to it's ratings until maybe 6 years ago.
And the unique thing about radio in the SF bay area? You might be 14 miles from the transmitter in SF and not be able to receive the signal in San Mateo or Half Moon Bay. Because hills and.
Fun fact: KSAN FM was the last of the 60's era album rock stations to die, I think it changed format to country music(?) in the mid to late 70's.

The answer could be a simple as, being intellectual adolescents, liberals don't have the capacity to pay attention long enough to a radio (no screen with bright colors to look at) to make liberal talk radio viable.
I can help with that.

The stuff that comes out of the regional affiliates makes NPR national content seem like pretty weak sauce by comparison.
There was a piece aired by "The California Report" on our local public radio here in the SF Bay Area, after the Zimmerman trial, which was absolutely instantly ragestroke-inducing. Outright accusing Zimmerman of getting away with the murder of Trayvon Martin.
And featuring (drumroll) comments by Van Jones. Who despite having to relinquish his position in Obama's administration due to views that were too moonbatty even for Obama to publicly tolerate, nevertheless is still warmly welcomed and harbored by the institutional left wherever he goes.
Of course, just as with national NPR, tax money goes to produce this crap.

Posted by: Epobirs at December 28, 2013 11:59 AM (bPxS6)
I was listening to 'John and Ken' on KFI for the first time in a while on Thursday. John was on alone and at one point went into a Traytable rant that revealed what a fool he is. He outright called Zimmerman a murderer and anyone who supported him as aiding and abetting. The reason for this rant? Because Zimmerman hasn't been an utterly perfect person since the trial. As if only angels are allowed to defend themselves against being assaulted by a more physically capable person with considerably more fighting experience.
I suspect part of it is John has three sons, at least one of them into his tens, and perhaps John worries his kid could be as thuggish and stupid as Traytable.
