— Open Blogger I tend to look at Washington Post columnist George Will as one of those tame 'house' conservatives who doesn't dare get too rambunctious or else he won't get invited to the D.C. swells' cocktail parties. Perhaps I'm being unfair. But nevertheless, I don't read him all that often.
But occasionally he'll line one over the outfielder's glove for extra bases. Like this column here, that I pulled out of the sidebar a day or two ago. In it, Will talks about how the liberals shifted the responsibility for JFK's assassination from an actual person to a a vague, amorphous 'culture' or 'Spiral of Hate'. And he argues that it ruined liberalism, turning it into something warped and deranged:
The bullets of Nov. 22, 1963, altered the nationÂ’s trajectory less by killing a president than by giving birth to a destructive narrative about America. Fittingly, the narrative was most injurious to the narrators. Their recasting of the tragedy in order to validate their curdled conception of the nation marked a ruinous turn for liberalism, beginning its decline from political dominance.
Punitive liberalism preached the necessity of national repentance for a history of crimes and misdeeds that had produced a present so poisonous that it murdered a president. To be a liberal would mean being a scold. Liberalism would become the doctrine of grievance groups owed redress for cumulative inherited injuries inflicted by the nationÂ’s tawdry history, toxic present and ominous future.
As the poet says, read the whole thing. The JFK assassination may have been the first time that liberals blamed a national tragedy on 'right wing hate'. And they've been getting lots of practice ever since.

No thanks, won't read. But I will say, as I like to whenever JFK's name gets mentioned: he was killed by his Secret Service agent in the car behind him. Accidentally, of course. No conspiracy, no magic bullets. Just one tragic accidental firing of an AR-15.
So yeah, maybe that's what has the libs all up in arms (so to speak). Those pesky "assault weapons," going off all over the place where they shouldn't.

Exactly so.
JFK was killed by a communist.
JFK lowered taxes and believed in the free market.

It's not that bad. There's a book, called "Mortal Error" that presents a theory from a ballistics expert that, given the trajectory and the angle of the fatal headshot, the most likely source was from the SS car behind Kennedy's. There was an AR-15 in the car, there is a photo showing the SS agent holding it as the car sped away after the shots.
He makes a compelling case.
Do I believe it?
Heck, I don't know, but it makes a lot more sense than plenty of the nutty conspiracy theories that are out there.

Ironically, there is also a credible theory out there that RFK was killed by an accidental shooting from a security guard who was in the room when Sirhan was firing. He probably did discharge his weapon, and no one has done any real work to find out the caliber and angles of the rounds that hit Kennedy, nor if I recall, the other people who were hit that day along with RFK.

Sure, but some are more easily refutable than others. This one, from the best I can gather, has never really been challenged, for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that it's lost in a sea of nutty theories.
I read the book. You don't have be believe me, but I'm telling you if you did I think you would find it at least plausible.
To me the least acceptable aspect of is is the perfectness of the situation that would have had to occur, in that the weapon was accidentally discharged, and it just happened to be aimed at Kennedy's head.
Improbably, and unlikely, but obviously not impossible.

What was unique about the reaction to the Kennedy assassination is that the scolding bore absolutely no relation or had any connection to what actually happened and solidified so thoroughly that liberals still blame his death on the right to this day.

The Kennedy yarns are many and fun, especially if you were a local.
Ruby's lawyer was a guy named Carrol Journegon (sp?). He used to let me bass fish in some nice little stock tanks where he lived. This would have been the mid-70's. He was crazy as a loon, though some said he just acted crazy to stay alive. I would fish and he would from a tablet for hours sometimes shouting, sometimes whispering. There might have been hidden messsages in his rantings about Mr. Sun and Mr. Moon, but if so they were beyond me. The price to fish was a pint of whiskey, and the fishing was good.
The odd thing was where Carrol lived. He lived right on the edge of Rose Hill Cemetary, and no house was as close to Oswald's grave as Carrol's.

"Evolution of the AR-15 In December of 1959, Colt acquired manufacturing and marketing rights to the AR-15. In 1962 Colt was able to get the Department of Defense's Advanced Research Project Agency (ARPA) to test 1,000 weapons in its Vietnam-oriented Project Agile."

To be clear, it's not as though the other scoldings I mentioned had a significant connection to what happened, but at least you can kinda see people clicking neurons together. It's easy to see how somebody who wasn't well-versed in economics or the financial system could blame the Great Depression on capitalists or bankers. How a very large portion of the country could blame an assassination by a pro-Castro supporter, who had defected to the Soviet Union, on the right and hold steadfastly to that idea is an entirely different story.

Okay, here's a comment on the George Will article. He was born in 1941, so he was 20 years old or so in 1961. Now, at age 72 he is writing a column attempting to link the rift between right and left in this country to what was probably the seminal event in his 'coming-of-age' phase of life. When in fact, the battle between forces of statism versus individualism has been waged for millennia. Ultimately, this is a self-referential column. I find it to be of little usefulness in today's political climate.
And I'll bet George Will has never been to Peruvia.

Its ignored because it doesn't allow for the "proper" conspiracy theory idea. Posted by: Meremortal at October 12, 2013 07:57 PM (1Y+hH) I'm not sure about that. RFK ended up further to the left than JFK, and Teddy went way left - because it was politically expedient. I don't think any of the Kennedys had morals or strong convictions beside the conviction that Kennedys Should Rule.
It's funny though - my sister's husband is a boomer of Irish descent. In most respects, he's as conservative as me. He hates Obama and hated Fat Teddy. But you can't say a word of criticism about JFK around him - he actually gets angry if you do. I don't know if it's his age (I can't remember JFK's assassination, so I don't have that "where were you when you heard?"memory that is such a vivid memory for older boomers.) or his ancestry. Older Irish-Americans really seem to view him in a haze of misty nostagia - he's the guy who made them hip and cool.
(Not all Irish-Americans of course - P.J. O'Rourke, bless him, referred to the Kennedy adminstration as "the bogtrotters' circus.")

You don't have to read it, but everything regarding the trajectory and the number of rounds fired, and the nature of Kennedy's wounds are covered in the book.
The author doesn't state unequivocally that the ballistics expert's views are correct, just that they believe they have not been fully investigated or disproven.
If you like a good read, I would definitely recommend the book, and here I am, just putting it out there, not claiming I believe it, so again, take it for what it's worth.

(Not all Irish-Americans of course - P.J. O'Rourke, bless him, referred to the Kennedy adminstration as "the bogtrotters' circus.")
I know I might catch heat for the compariso
n, but this was the seminal national tragedy for most of his life. For that guy it's almost certainly the type of reaction you'd get from listening to a foreigner try to argue the "other side" or 9/11. It's emotional. Sure, you could explain to him why he's wrong--and, yet, a punch in the face seems the most appropriate response.
There was also the first Catholic President aspect to it, which is hard to grasp now. I don't think it's a coincidence that O'Rourke, who's knocked the Kennedys more than any other Irishman I've ever read, isn't one.

So I have your "Shutdown theater" story for the day.
The Academic conference for my field is in 10 days. I'm not going this year, but I got an email saying that the Q&A with the chair of the President's Council for Bioethics was likely to be canceled because of the shutdown.
Except she's not actually a government employee. In fact she's the president of the University of Pennsylvania, who probably is the group paying for her trip to the conference anyway (or at least could.)
But SHUTDOWN, so she's not allowed to even talk about it.
(Frankly I don't care, the stuff coming out of this committee is crap of the highest order, pure utter crap. But I thought the story was funny because SHUTDOWN)

"Their recasting of the tragedy in order to validate their curdled conception of the nation marked a ruinous turn for liberalism, beginning its decline from political dominance."
It would seem that as of now, liberalism is essentially so politically dominant that to deviate from its ideas is thought to mean political suicide.

Yep. It is also why my parents felt so attached to JFK. (Catholic but not Irish.) I didn't realize the prejudice against Catholics was so strong until an ex-boyfriend of mine, a Lutheran, told me his mother almost delivered him in the back seat of the car. He's from rural, downstate Illinois and his mother wouldn't go to the closest hospital - because it was Catholic and she didn't want all those nuns and statues of saints around.
When my boyfriend told this story, his relatives all laughed. Ah yes, mom sure had her quirks! As the only Catholic present, I was not as amused.

You could be right. But my brother is a major lib and I am very conservative. As far as political animals, it's speculation but here's mine. Bobby was the most grounded even though he was very liberal. He believed it. Jack was in the middle, had principles but would bend for the political win. Teddy, pfffht, no explanation needed.
My uncle acted as JFK's interpretor when the Italian Prime Minister came to visit Kennedy shortly after he took office, so I heard a little about JFK back then from the inside.

Kennedy (JFK) was killed by a cuban sympathizing communist that had defected to Russia and returned. To admit it to us simple middle Americans could never be done.
they were so afraid that we'd expect our betters in DC to DO Something. They were afraid we'd expect them to declare war after the murderous scum bag communists were associated with a pathetic, wanna-be communist that killed the President of the US. That would mess up all their wonderful plans, ideas, and playing hide the salami with the secretarial pool. That would be inconvenient.
So they blamed EVERYONE but the communists.

As I said, I don't really care at all.
And frankly I don't see it as being much of a loss to the conference. But then I think the PCBI is crap. For all the shit the Kass and Pelligrino commissions got for being "conservative" at least their stuff was internally consistent.
Most of the shit coming out of this commission doesn't even know basic shit (like laws). Or where they try to reason by analogy they get it all backwards.
(They spend 2 pages looking at the comparison of whole genome sequences to fingerprints, which is a fairly apt comparison I think, but then conclude that a whole genome sequence shouldn't be considered "a personal identifier" just like fingerprints since it requires a database to match with an identity.
Except fingerprints are considered by HIPAA to be a personal identifier..so oops I guess?)
But it does seem odd to me to tell someone they can't travel on their private institutional dime and talk about their experiences on a government commission because...shutdown? That's a dangerous precedent, that the government owns every interaction we have with them. (Of course not unlike the national park closing.)

60 Speaking of JFK, the History Channel duplicated the so-called magic bullet shot exactly.
An Australian company created two ballistic mannequins, of the type armies now use to test weapons; in the past they used live pigs. These were made of gelatine, resin bones, and chamois skin.
They hired a marksman (Oswald was a former marine and an expert shot) and put him in a crane at the right distance and angle. The mannequins were positioned where Kennedy and Connally sat in the limo, and the marksman fired.
Not only did the shot almost exactly duplicate the multiple wounds inflicted on Kennedy and Connally, the recovered bullet looked remarkably like the slightly flattened "magic bullet."
Very compelling argument that Oswald was the single shooter, which I'd concluded a long time ago.

Seeing Barack Obama as someone who has a victim mentality would explain a lot. That mentality relies on believing one has been harmed, that one was not responsible for the injuries that occurred, that one could not have prevented what happened and that the person’s suffering makes that person morally right and deserving of sympathy....if he sees himself as having been taken hostage by kidnappers who want to blow him up, it is too much to expect him to hear any truths these “kidnappers” might want to share. Victims aren’t expected to lead. They expect to be rescued.

I read one post about VA. IÂ’m 10 1/2 years younger & was scared that heÂ’d get sent to Vietnam. I remember seeing pictures on the news then. He went to Germany instead, Thank God.

Our son was told by the VA last week to come back in six months for his injured back. Fortunately, he has Tri-Care for the next three months, and parents who can (barely) afford to help him.

He is pretty crazy. But a certain amount of crazy is not necessarily an impediment to sound judgement in technical fields. If you want an extreme case, look at mathematicians.

Senate Republicans are doubtful the House will be able to come up with a plan that can pass. “The House seems to be having a hard time. The president’s not helping much,” said Senator Lamar Alexander (R., Tenn.). ”Senator Reid and Senator McConnell are the adults in the room and hopefully they’ll be able to make a recommendation.”
I see a certain Senator from Tennessee needs a primarying. People with lobotomies should not be in office.

Too bad Amishdude isn't here to see that.
True story: One of my uncles is a mathematician, works in cryptology I believe. Many decades ago, he had a shirt with the little alligator logo on it. he liked the shirt, but that cutesy little logo annoyed him, so he cut it off, leaving a hole behind. Then afterwards he walked around wearing a shirt with a hole in the chest, and when anyone pointed that out, he would reply, "Well, it was a nice shirt but it had this stupid alligator on it..."

Oswald's communism, his sojourn in Russia, and his Russian wife, Marina were all well-publicized back in the day. I don't remember ever not knowing those facts, once it had been published in the Canadian newspapers.

Sure, Canadian newspapers. And someone who reads the UK Daily Mail in current times would be well-informed about what's happening in the U.S. But if they read the New York Times ("The Paper of Record" "All The News That's Fit To Print"), not so much.
