Liberals: Why Won't These Damn Republicans Just Accept ObamaCare?
— DrewM

There's something I hate about liberals and also admire...they NEVER give up. It doesn't matter how many times they lose or are told no, they keep coming back. However when they win, everything must be frozen in stone, unchangeable and never to be questioned.

Take this current JurnoList reaction to continued GOP opposition to ObamaCare.

First, NBC (via Jay Cost who you should be following on Twitter).

*** Welcome to the perpetual campaign: HereÂ’s a thought exercise on this summer morning: Imagine that after the controversial and Medicare prescription-drug legislation was passed into law in 2003, Democrats did everything they could to thwart one of George W. BushÂ’s top domestic achievements. They launched Senate filibusters to block essential HHS appointees from administering the law; they warned the sports and entertainment industries from participating in any public service announcements to help seniors understand how the law works; and, after taking control of the House of Representatives in 2007, they used the power of the purse to prohibit any more federal funds from being used to implement the law. As it turns out, none of that happened. And despite Democratic warnings that the law would be a bust -- we remember the 2004 Dem presidential candidates campaigning against it -- the Medicare prescription-drug law has been, for the most part, a pretty big success. But that thought exercise has become a reality 10 years later as Republicans have worked to thwart/stymie/sabotage -- pick your word -- the implementation of President ObamaÂ’s health-care and financial-reform laws.

And one of Greg Sargent's co-bloggers at the Washington Post.

What are the responsibilities of the opponents of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)? Is it reasonable to undermine it at every step?
Several commentators (including me last week, and Brian Beutler today) have argued that there is in fact something unusual about GOP resistance to Obamacare. The pushback from conservatives is to flip the story: ACA supporters are simply seeking to shift blame if reform fails from the law to its opponents. Philip Klein rolled out that argument earlier this week; Patrick Ruffini refined it today:

Shorter @brianbeutler: Republicans wonÂ’t help Obama fix the mess he created.

I think that may work as political rhetoric. Well, actually, I donÂ’t think it matters much; if the ACA fails, no one is going to blame Republicans whether they bear any of the responsibility or not. At any rate, I donÂ’t think thatÂ’s what those of us who have made the observation about undermining the ACA mean, however, or at least itÂ’s not what I had in mind. My question would be whether Republicans, in undermining the law in order to destroy it, are acting responsibly.

First of all, the idea of NBC accusing the GOP of conducting a "perpetual campaign" in the age of Obama is hysterical in and of itself.

Second, maybe I'm remembering it incorrectly but I seem to recall the Democrats desperately trying to undermine the Iraq war. That they didn't go all out to repeal Medicare Part D is because their opposition to it was that it didn't go far enough (remember "the doughnut hole"?). They were more than happy to take the expansion of government and try and expand it latter (which they did by closing the hole in ObamaCare).

The most ridiculous part of this is the idea that liberals, who are constantly trying to create new laws are upset that people won't accept the supposed status quo.

Imagine for a moment NBC or the liberals at the Washington Post saying, "You know, people who are trying to pass Schumer-Toomey gun control are undermining existing laws. Why can't they just accept that the laws on the books are there and let it be?".

So much of political arguments is about the unstated assumptions underlying the debate. Liberals are much better at managing those than conservatives are. Much of that is because of liberal control of the media. By controlling the ground rules of a discussion, you set the terms under which the debate is conducted and you're halfway to victory before it beings. That's one of the real damages of media bias.

Kudos to conservatives and many Republicans for not playing along. It's clearly starting to bother the liberals.

Oh, I'll start considering ObamaCare settled law when Obama starts acting like it and enforcing/implementing it as written. Until then, it's still very much a live issue.

7 Here in NC, we have Moral Mondays led by a NAACP pastor who has been bringing protestors into the legislative building to try and cause trouble and get arrested. NC just recently changed hands and now we have a solid R controlled state and the dems just can't accept that. They need to cause trouble because they can't accept the simple fact that elections have consequences.

I used to think of projection as a mental disorder, but the Democrats have been using it as an effective political strategy since the 1960s. Their biggest success is convincing low-info types that Dems aren't race obsessed, their opponents are, but they use it for everything now.

Yeah - I called these clowns last week to see what the people at the Obamacare "Hotline" knew;  it's worse than you think:

Guess who has no idea who is going to be running the exchanges in those states?  Or how much a basic policy is going to cost?  Or who is going to be paying the difference between the amount a “low-income” person will have to pay and the cost of the policy? (I neglected to point out that any exchange run by the federal government will not be eligible for the subsidies promised by the President and Congress, as expressly written in the bill – didnÂ’t want anyoneÂ’s head to explode)

These people have no idea what a bare bones policy will cost – only that there will be a Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum level of coverage.  They donÂ’t know what the deductibles are going to be, nor do they know what the co-pays will be.  They have no idea how much of a percentage of a familyÂ’s income will be required to be shelled out for a policy premium – PACA_Premium_Chart.jpg">even though it is spelled out in black and white in the original legislation.

18 The left are masters of the "heads I win, tales you lose" school of politics. They are also very, very adept - like most good commies - at "The Long Game." Like you Drew, I both loathe and admire them for it. They lose, lose, lose, lose, lose, lose, and lose - and then the instant they win it's "THAT'S IT, ISSUE SETTLED, TIME TO ACCEPT IT AND MOVE ON!!!" as if it's written in stone now that they once managed to get a plurality of folks to, in theory, agree with them.

One thing that might help - not with liberals  in media but swing voters -  would be to keep alternatives to Obamacare in the conversation.

Whatever they are. Make the message either that 'There's no real problem with health care so Obamacare is not needed" or "There is a problem, but the real solution is the following..."

You don't want to get stuck in the  No Man's Land of "Yeah there's a problem but we oppose solutions."  Pick a  savvy  approach and stick with it.

25 It all boils down to the Left viewing those on the Right as having no right to participate in the political process. If you drill down far enough, the underlying premise of those on the Left is that their positions are the only possible positions that should be taken, that their positions are the only morally proper positions and that any opposition to those positions is per se illegitimate. If your opposition is per se illegitimate, then why should you believe they should be allowed to oppose you? Tyranny, all the way down.

45 'My question would be whether Republicans, in undermining the law in order to destroy it, are acting responsibly.'

It was irresponsible for Democrats to pass the largest expansion of the welfare state since the Great Society legislation along party lines and over the objections of the American people. [Obamacare hasn't had positive approval ratings in the polls since May, 2009]

It would be irresponsible of Republicans, who avoided the stain of Obamacare when they refused to vote for it, to now support an irresponsible law.

Also, Republicans have not had any role in the implementation of Obamacare, especially with regard to IT and the Federal government-run exchanges.  Those have been entirely within the purview and power of HHS & the IRS.

PS:  Everyone should keep in mind that Obamacare SPECIFICALLY prohibits the Federal government from providing subsidies on exchanges that it runs.  Federal taxpayer-funded subsidies are ONLY permissible under the law when they are distributed by STATE-RUN exchanges...and, this will remain the law unless and until Chief Justice John Roberts decides to Dowderise the law on this point.

Rush  made a good point about the  difference between "change" and "imposition" yesterday: the first comes   about in an organic fashion, usually as a result of   people seeing the value of it on their own,  and typically involves freedom and   new   opportunity.  Think  automobiles.

Imposition,  such as we're  seeing in OCare,   is    forced   upon us against our  will, and typically   results in less freedom and more  restriction.

It's a sad fact that we've lost control of our government,  or rather, we've had devious liars propped up as candidates who say one thing to get elected, then begin acting like the power-hungry zealots they really are once in office.  This means we've had the control of government removed from us.

Is that what this is?) whose opponents clearly articulated its flaws and dangers during the process, for which they were resoundingly attacked (not the least of which was done by the lapdog media), flaws which are now much worse and more financially damaging than previously estimated, which former opponents are now acknowledging are true, which the president is now using his apparently new-found imperial powers to delay (until after the election when the financial hammer really falls on businesses)...is somehow now a partisan and a perpetual campaign?

What the fuck ever happened to facts. evidence and reasoning? Should we simply ignore actual outcomes in favor of propagandizing and waiving the Obama flag?

I've said it before. The most damaging part of the Obama presidency to America is his media acolytes. Professor Jacobson called this play back in 2009, quoting the leader of the MSM, Vladdy Lenin of the New York Times:

Comrades! The revolt by the five kulak volost’s must be suppressed without mercy. The interest of the entire revolution demands this, because we have now before us our final decisive battle “with the kulaks.” We need to set an example.

1) You need to hang (hang without fail, so that the public sees) at least 100 notorious kulaks, the rich, and the bloodsuckers.
2) Publish their names.
3) Take away all of their grain.
4) Execute the hostages – in accordance with yesterday’s telegram.

This needs to be accomplished in such a way, that people for hundreds of miles around will see, tremble, know and scream out: letÂ’s choke and strangle those blood-sucking kulaks.

Telegraph us acknowledging receipt and execution of this.

Yours, Lenin

P.S. Use your toughest people for this.

For years, Marshall and Brennan dissented on every death penalty case, citing the "cruel and unusual" clause, even though that had been well-settled against them. For this, of course, they were liberal icons. But if any nominee for the Supreme Court insinuated that Roe vs. Wade was kinda dumb, and poorly written besides, well that person was an idiot, with no understanding of res judicata, and totally unfit to serve on the Supreme Court.

87 These people have no idea what a bare bones policy will cost – only that there will be a Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum level of coverage.
======
I've told you all this before but I'll repeat it:
1) there is no "Platinum" at least, that is, a plan you will qualify for. It's there alright--you just won't be able to afford it or meet the conditions.
2) So, it's now three tiers, down from the current minimum of six. That means at least twice as many higher risk people will be in your pool. Naturally, that means lower premiums, right?
3) The vast majority of us will only qualify for and/or only afford the Bronze plan. How awesome is the Bronze plan? About as awesome as a bronze sword in the 20th century. That is, it's a 60/40 split on the co-pay. Yup. Now you get to pay more in premiums because a shit-ton of riskier people have been dumped in your pool but you also get to pay at least 20% more out-of-pocket (not including the skyrocketing costs of the care that will soon come).

89 To continue being an amateur internet psychologist, I find many on the Left's insistence that their positions are the only proper positions to be a sign of immaturity of thought. One of the more difficult realities to accept is that other people have positions that are opposite of yours and that they came to those positions thought thought and consideration. Or, less snootily, growing up means realizing that every position has a downside and there are no perfect solutions.

147 I'm not sure why you morons are still complaining about Obamacare. Look at Theresa Heinz. She has a Grand Mal seizure on Nantucket and after a trip to the hospital in Nantucket they put her on her private plane, fly her to Boston, shut down the roads from Logan Airport to Mass General where she immediately gets the best treatment money can buy. This is the kind of treatment we will all receive in the future. Right? Right?!?

149 I agree with the sentiment, AtC, but with this caveat: many people hold positions because they've been told they are the right positions to hold. They've given no thought or consideration to the things they believe, they just know they're supposed to believe a specific way because their "betters" told them so. "That's retarded, Sir".

If I'm the defense, I argue that the prosecution's abandonment of such a charge means it should be thrown out and only the lesser charges considered. The definition of murder with a depraved mind in Florida is "showing no regard for human life." Zimmerman calling for help and only waiting until Martin saw the gun and went for it shows Z had a regard for human life and only shot Martin in self-defense, IMHO.

One thing that would be helpful is if conservatives would stop calling these half-educated, sneering, credentialed, frauds "elitists."  If people had any idea just how easy it is to get even an advanced degree these days it would change their perceptions about education forever.

I'm a former academic from the Ivy League and I am only half-joking when I tell you that all you need to get into just about any school these days is to be a member of a preferred cast, or a 6" X 2 3/4 " piece of paper that starts with "pay to the order of." So next time someone waves  his graduate degree in your face, ask him if he can read, chances are he can't.
