Lindsey Graham: The White House Must Permit Benghazi Survivors to Speak
— Ace

Without doubt. Graham is right to push this.

Watch Jay Carney's lie right here. In the first part of the sentence, he claims the White House is not blocking these people from talking. In the second part, he adds in that they are, of course, precluded from discussing sensitive topics due to their positions...

The second part of the sentence blows up the first part. This is the game the White House is playing: They are putting these people on notice they might be prosecuted for revealing state secrets if they say something Obama doesn't like.

We don't have to hear about whatever they were doing in Benghazi as far as secret business -- perhaps they were part of the operation to covertly arm the Syrian rebels. Fine, we don't need to hear about that.

But surely they can talk about the things our enemies already know, like how our enemies mounted a coordinated attack against our embassy.

The press just rolls over for Obama on this. They want people kept in the dark. The only people being prevented from knowing "state secrets" are the American public. Al Qaeda knows all about the details of its operation, after all.

Graham urges subpoenas:

I think that Speaker Boehner is very much in the mindset of trying to get to the bottom of Benghazi. But yes, I will urge Speaker Boehner to use the powers of the House not to chase rabbits, but to get to the bottom line. We have not heard from the people who went through this debacle who were there on the ground. I guarantee if this had been a good news story we would have heard from them the next day. The fact we havenÂ’t heard from them for six months should make every American worried about what this administration is covering up.

I would say they should also offer immunity from prosecution via legislation, but the Senate Democrats would block that and thus renew the very threat that keeps these people quiet. But the House is working on protections for them nonetheless.

Any Benghazi survivor who talks to his committee would be protected from prosecution or job termination from the Obama administration, Rogers said. “We’ll make sure of that. That is whistle bower standard protection. If they’re fired for talking to us, there’ll be some hell to pay.”

Issa agrees, saying, “Any kind of retaliation against any of the witnesses we’ve already had would not be tolerated.

Interesting.  It is too late in the morning for him to have been up all night,  and  yet too early in the day for him to have woken up like normal.

This is almost disquieting.

No.... it does matter if they were secretly arming the Syrians... this is TAX money... and at this point there is no reason to keep this secret except that it will embarass Obama...

Ask Oliver North about arming rebels on the sly....

This is also the Administration that managed to Loose a US Aircraft, during the Illegal bombing of Libya... and somehow kept it secret.... at least from the AMERICAN Press.

Why?  because getting that plane shot down would have made the public ask why the hell we were there at all....

Thus, the American Press, if they knew, were complicit in Obama's Illegal War in Libya (which did not follow the War Powers Act... nor have any justification under the War on Terror... and WAS against the UN Charter, which has the force of US Law as a Treaty).

23 The White House is capitalizing on the "nobody cares" aspect of this whole thing.

What people don't realize, it seems, is that Hillary's state we all love to mock was itself a canny (and quite intentional) summary of the zeitgeist surrounding this scandal: the American people Could Not Give Less Of A Fuck.  To most people, it's a footnote to the election campaign, a 'political' scandal that's no more relevant than "47%" or any of the other bullshit from back then.

Don't bother telling me that this is an outrageous state of affairs.  Or that this is really a far bigger deal than that.  I know.  I get it.  I agree.  But truthfully, this isn't going to get anywhere, not just because the media is in the tank for Obama (they are), but because the American people don't give a shit either.

Sorry to be all cynical.

"Most (all?) of these people have classified-type jobs and they're being told they can't talk about what happened, or they'll face prosecution. "

I'm not sure about the State Dept procedures so couldn't say.  Perhaps they are made a sign an all encompassing NDA.  From my own experience with the military though security clearances and confidentiality only cover specific things and there is no confusion about what those things are.  Being involved in a terrorist attack like this wouldn't have anything to do with the confidentiality of whatever work this person was involved with inside the embassy... unless said work was specifically related to the attack... which would be rather interesting.

Posted by: Andrew at March 21, 2013 07:17 AM (HS3dy)

27 So you think they have a story that they'd like to share with us, and that what holds them back is a threat from the administration. Or else they'd totally tell us.

This is a good point, but it's worth pointing that there WERE leaks early on -- and of course there are still tons of intentional, politically-targeted "leaks" (not the sort of things we're thinking about, however).  What happened is that the Obama administration has been more vigorous about prosecuting, both criminally and professionally, leakers and whistleblowers than any previous administration.  This is occasionally remarked upon by the media (I've seen it mentioned in POLITICO every now and again), but not dwelt upon because of course That Would Be Gauche.

31 What the White House could just do is tell these people "You can't talk about the covert arms operation (even though everyone, and I mean everyone, already knows about it, but whatever) but you can talk about the attack itself, and we won't arrest you for that." But they're not doing that. They're telling these people know that anything they say might be grounds for prosecution.

Ace, just to clarify something...

When you say "Al Qaeda knows all about the details of its operation, after all" that's true, but that's not the standard by which classified information is protected.  The danger here could (just pulling a reason out of my ass) be to let AQ know just what *we* know, which is intelligence in and of itself.

A lousy analogy:  the Russkies know all about the details of their plans for Eastern Europe, so what's the harm in us talking about them?

Graham is a dick, and I'm still pissed about his dismissing of Rand Paul's filibuster, but give credit where it's due: he has ALWAYS, ALWAYS been a rottweiler on these sorts of issues agains the Obama administration.  You could fill up hours with highlight reels of him eviscerating Obama administration appointees during Senate hearings about national security matters.  He's a prosecutor by trade, so it's something he's incredibly good at.

Not offering an endorsement or anything, but these politicians are more than cartoon Heroes and Villains and the fact is Graham has been way, way out in front in holding Team Obama's feet to the fire.

Last night (I think?) on FOX News 6pm, Brett Baier, after the spot by Katherine Herridge, offered for any survivor to call FOX.

Hey, Jay! It ain't going away. My hope(s) are that
1) The truth will be made public for the men who died
2) The truth will be made public to protect others in the future
3) Le Jug-Eared-Pidgeon-Toed imp is shown in true light of a) not caring at 5pm with meeting w/Panetta et all and either slept or was chemically out to lunch...but NOT answering that 3am call
4) Hilary is shown in true light as a) failing to protect embassies, after repeated requests and on NINE ELEVEN (yes, I capitalize, bite me); and b) ruining her chances of 2016 in spite of her new upcoming plastic surgery and cankle transplants
5) The mainstream lying US media is fully exposed to the world of how they lie to protect Le Jug-Ear. I want the media to go down, baby. The UK press had the truth on 9/12/12 that this was a terror attack, that they were warned, and that the British embassy had left in June.

50 O/T

Why is Obama addressing young people at the Jerusalem Civic Center but not the Knesset? He addressed the Turkish General Assembly, so why not stand before the Israeli Knesset? Listening to PM Netanyahu address a joint session of Congress was a highlight for me. Look at President Obama's actions amidst the deteriorating neighborhood surrounding Israel as the true reflection of his policy – not the empty words of yet another teleprompted speech.

51 The one thing that has occurred to me:

The real reason that the White House will never, ever let this stuff really be aired out short of a massive shitstorm of media pressure and legal compulsion?  It was part of their Deal With Hillary.

By which I mean: she played good soldier for the first term, and they would cover her ass and support her in 2016.  I'll be pessimistic again and say that I think that if Hillary runs in 2016 she's a guaranteed presidential winner (oh you thought the gender gap was bad before?  JUST WAIT).  What's the only thing that could potentially derail her?  Something truly noxious, like: Hillary Clinton intentionally let our people die in Libya for political reasons.  Or she was "asleep at the wheel."

So since Clinton played for the team, Obama & Co. will do everything they can to prevent this from damaging her run in 2016.

Oftentimes this claim that we "don't want our enemies to know" is a false flag for "we don't want our voters to know.""

Oftentimes, maybe, but not all the time.

Carrying this forward a little...AQ doesn't (necessarily) know what the survivors saw, or think they saw.  There is intelligence value in keeping the enemy's knowledge of what we observed purposefully vague.  Yes, they know what they did, but they don't necessary know if *we* know the full scope of what happened.

Heck, it's not unreasonable for me to believe that maybe a survivor observed something that made a couple of dots click in his head that, if he talked about it, could expose an intelligence source.  Maybe he says "That guy who runs the falafel stand down the road, Jimmy Mahmoud, tried to warn me about this attack" without realizing that Jimmy is a mole who is going to now get his head cut off by the local thugocracy.

The main thing I'm trying to say is that just because there's an attack doesn't mean every testimony about that attack is suddenly declassified.

Interesting. It is too late in the morning for him to have been up all night, and yet too early in the day for him to have woken up like normal.

This is almost disquieting.

Wasn't one of those tips in How to Win Friends and Influence People something like "give them a positive image to live up to"? Maybe he feels guilt about the reward, and is trying to ex post facto "earn" it. Let's see how long that lasts.

Offering the survivors a cheesesteak isn't going to cut it when either their life and families lives have been threatened, or they just have to wait a few years for the password to a well funded bank account.

While this is true, they might not yet know how much or little we know about it. Generally, you don't even want the enemy to know what you know about them. They change tactics if they know you know too much about their current ones.

But that is still BS in this case. Everyone knows we're hapless morons on the Benghazi issue, because our president doesn't want even himself to know the facts.

There are literally thousands upon thousands of different wallcovering materials out there. So storing it, at our loss, in the hopes that someone would pick it again is a no go.

As for returning, it depends. If it's a special order, hell no. This was not a special order thank goodness. However, manufacturers typically will charge a "restocking fee", which I've seen go as high as 50%. Guy I talked to said theirs is normally 30%, but because I was essentially doing an exchange (wrong material for right material, same amount and price) he thought he could get it waived or reduced. We shall see.

152 Will Boehner scream blood clot in brain like Shrillary did, and disappear for a while til it blows over?

154 Didn't Hillary blame lax security on Republican spending cuts or something?

sigh,

I had forgotten that.

157 What's the only thing that could potentially derail her? Something truly noxious, like: Hillary Clinton intentionally let our people die in Libya for political reasons. Or she was "asleep at the wheel." good points, but, nothing will take hillary down nothing

158 OR, put $50 in the jar so ace can buy her a really nice veggie cheesesteak and a six pack of Old Style. tell me how I can do this: anonymously no paper trail from abroad and, I'll do it

The morning after Nov. 6th,

My # 1,  who is back at home again after 13 years with the USMC and 5 combat tours and is staying with us while he finishes his degree, awoke early the next day to quickly retrive all of the lawn furniture scattered all over the front yard that his "Old Man" had HURLED over the fence after the election results became a dismal truth. He never said a thing about it.

Bengazi truely makes a fine "Blue Ribbon Blood Flecked Sash to wear over my own rage at this abortion of an election that was 2012.

Oh!

Have a fucking great day....

161 What's so "sensitive" about stamping passports at a consulate in Benghazi? Yeah, wasn't really a "consulate" was it? More like a CIA gun running operation no? So every single Republican and Democrat who have uttered the word "consulate" for the past 6 months in relation to Benghazi has been lying to the American people. So that bullshit interrogation by Congress of Hillary Clinton as to why she didn't protect "her employees" was just a dog & pony show for a gullible American public wasn't it?

162 I understand that Ace referred to witness immunity "by legislation", but if I recall correctly, the House of Representatives can issue immunity (with a majority vote) to witnesses without concurrence by the Senate or the Executive branch.

164 Hillary Clinton has no responsibility for the security of CIA personnel in Benghazi. She was responsible for Stevens and that fag Comm. officer from Tripoli who was in Benghazi for "date night" with the Ambassador. Since there were diplomatic security officers with Stevens I would say Hillary did her job. They were simply overwhelmed by a freakin platoon-sized assault from well-trained fighters.

165 What if there really are no survivors and they were only able to recover four bodies?  No body, no murder...

Posted by: affenhauer at March 21, 2013 08:55 AM (6Ucyq)

166 How about the House putting the WH on notice that any retribution againt survivors who testify about what happened will be analyzed in the light of possible impeachment proceedings. Hey, that's what they constantly did to Bush. Take off the gloves. This is an incident, particularly including the coverup, that rises to that level. Very Nixonian.

168 "Without doubt. Graham is right to push this." I simply don't care. No matter what he says or does, I hate his pansy ass. The only thing I want to read about Graham is that he was defeated in the 2014 primary. Failing that, in the 2014 general election. I'm sick of the Stain and Lady Lindsey. I want both gone.

169 Please don't stop at Benghazi survivors. After Hillary's comment that "she can't read every email that comes into the State Dept", just subpoena the State Dep & JCS Ops Center folks, PLUS those who were tasked with delivering a FLASH precedence msg to the Sec of State IAW the SOP (and, BTW, debrief the SOP for FLASH msgs). I can't believe no one in the hearings delved past this!! And don't leave the SOP for POTUS out, either.

170 It's a pity there wasn't really time before the election - they could have spoken up, gone to jail, and Romney (because Obama would already be swinging for treason) could have pardoned them.
