Embedded below. Horrible.

A KFOR tornado reporter called it "the worst tornado damage in the history of the world".

Via DaveinTexas, here's the path of the storm:

10 Been a weird spring. It kinda figures that when the planet tries to equalize it's gonna do it with a vengeance. Gotta daughter in the corner of tornado alley with a weather radio I gave her that irritates her doing the night, but she dutifully marches all the young uns down to the basement. Prayers, subjected to IRS approval, to all in the area.

11 Where are Soona and Sherry McEvil? These storms are like a nightmare.

I'm hoping they made it to shelter.  If they're right where the devastation is, though, we probably won't hear from them for a day or so, at least.

12 We had some horrible winds last night, lost a few branches.  Counting myself lucky (so far).  I think this thing may be headed my way.  Had out of towners here that had never seen a storm like the one last night.  I just laughed and said, good grief this is nothing dude.

13 prayers for all.  I saw tornadoes when I was a kid but I have never, never seen anything like this ever.  Prayers all around.  They are looking for kids at the school, but they think they are OK since the school had a huge shelter.  I pray that's the case.  It will be a miracle if there are not any fatalities in this.  Pray pray pray

OK and TX - can't really blame the Liberals for that (remember- through that time, even our Democrats where at least fairly conservative-ish).

And... now it's getting dark here in Ft. Worth (current client is right in the middle of downtown).  Ummm... I think I'm going to head home rather than be stuck in a downtown high-rise when things get interesting here.

54 Costs are prohibitively high in TX and OK for basements because they have to be blasted out of the rock.

Safe houses that bolt onto the concrete and hold about four people cost about $6,000 .

55 Much as the movie 'Twister' and especially Helen Hunt annoyed me, the line 'hand of God' to describe the devastation of an EF-5 tornado kinda stuck with me. Hollywood is ok with God delivering devastation. Anything on the positive side of the equation, not so much.

105 AllenG and Red Shirt, Oklahoma has a very high water table, anywhere from 6 to 20 feet below the surface of the land. No one has basements normally because they flood and get moldy and it is exceptionally expensive to build basements that are reinforced enough to not leak. Storm shelters and storm cellars tend to be very small and heavily reinforced for that reason -- but that's cost prohibitive for large buildings. Most schools (at least when I was a kid) have reinforced cinderblock corridors in the center of the building, and kids tuck and roll there.

112 @98, they're reporting that one of the schools (I think Briarwood) was evacuated to a storm shelter in a church, and all those kids are safe. The 4th - 6th grades are all safe and accounted for from Plaza (although that's still unofficial atm). No word on the lower grades, yet.

There were 3 different schools that were hit...in the SW OKC area.

So it can be confusing, for those not seeing the local coverage here.

Btw...Oklahoma City is like a big amoeba, that encompasses dozens of smaller towns.

It sprawls out over 600 miles in all directions.

So...the town of Moore, is inside the SE quadrant of OKC.

116 This coverage is really heart-wrenching.  The local reporters can barely report because they keep losing it and breaking down.  I think other than Texas, folks in Oklahoma, must be the only ones that still address others as "Sir" and "Ma'am."

I can't listen to much more.  Children trapped under cars is all I can take.

166 If you are a storm follower, the Joplin storm was an F6 because two F4s merged at right angles creating the F6.  If the two storms had not met at just the right angle, they would have bounced off each other.

F4 last night at Shawnee, F4-F5 at Moore today.  Storm so powerful at Moore, it scoured the earth--taking up the grass, gravel.

BTW, radar is so good here in OK that they can show the debris ball of the storm as it moves.  We Okies invent/improve weather equipment at OU.

Tornado Warning for Jefferson County in OK until 6:15 PM CDT

Posted by: Tami[/i][/b][/u][/s] at May 20, 2013 02:41 PM (X6akg)

187 We had tornadoes about 12 years ago in Indianapolis.  It went through the north end of my neighborhood,  and skipped i a northeastern direction to go over two of my sisters' homes,  my son't home,   and the parochial school my grandson attended.

I had my granddaughter here and we hid in the basement.  Grandson was herded into the central hall where all of the skylights blew out and debris blew in.

Power and traffic lights were out all over the city,  which turned into a massive traffic jam.  Phones were overloaded and didn't work.  My son went to the school from work but it took him over an hour.  Grandson was in shock and shaking and wouldn't let go of him.  Granddaughter and I made our way to sister's home which still had power (ours didn't).    Finally got the kids all back home and it took about 5 hours. We were without power here for 3 days.

The chaos when the traffic lights and street blockages occur is not to be believed until you have lived through it.

One of the news items was the state's AG warning against price gouging, which was made illegal, and is defined as +10% price over normal.

Does that really help?   Seems it'd just result in shortages and people reselling for higher prices anyways.  (just like tickets to sport games or popular conferences)

I'm with ya..I know it's unrealistic to expect every school to be tornado proof, but when you have to rebuild a school that has been destroyed, put in some interior rooms that are engineered to be tornado resistant, at least.

I'm sure they will. In fact, they did, as one comment mentioned after 1998(ish)

It's not like in California where you have to 'retro fit'  every existing building and structure to be earthquake proof.

Did anyone hear the woman whose house had been destroyed talking about going to the school with whatever blankets she could find to help?

She also said (and laughed---because shock) that even though their house was destroyed, her closet was intact.

Poor woman.

214 Olddog, I accept your explanation .  I have lived in Tornado alley my entire life, 50 years and have never been hit.  I grew up in Norman, just south of Moore which had never been hit before 1999.  I now live in the DFW area and we've had tornados all over the place the last few years and the other night, right here in town just south of me.

It's ok to be outraged at the losses.  You know, after Moore had that awful '99 Tornado, almost all the new houses in the area rebuilt with storm shelters and safe rooms.  Lots of folks went out and installed underground storm cellars.

Just seeing those foundations that are wiped clean on TV and all the other damage, sometimes, you just cannot survive above ground, period.  Very sad.  Sorry for thinking you were trolling.  Sorry about your Joplin losses, that was horrible for sure.

Most single family residences don't have (much) tornado shelter, because of the expense, though I'd think it's beginning to get better. Especially those who rebuild. So it's better for kids to be at school, especially if the school has any shelter capability at all.

Fourth, fifth and sixth grade students were evacuated to a church about a quarter-mile away from the 440-student school before the tornado touched down.

Students in kindergarten through third grade sheltered in place, according to NBC station KFOR. Some of those students had been in a hallway when the twister hit, the station said.
