Local News From The Land of the Boned
— LauraW

Welcome To Connecticut! Please Hold Still While We Apply The Leeches

Ah, smell the crisp Autumn air in liberal utopia.

1) Amazon requested a tax abatement from the town of Windsor, CT because it wants to build a mammoth distribution warehouse on 90 acres of empty land.

2) Local deputy mayor Alan Simon started shooting off his mouth about how if Amazon wants to do business here, they need to agree to local hiring requirements and higher wages and a higher tax and fee load.

He actually views the difference between a tax-abatement and 'normal' taxation as a loss of money. Even though 'normal' taxation will prevent the development entirely.

3) Amazon suddenly withdrew their request.

SHOCKER, huh?

Advice to liberal government geniuses out there: don't show the knife to the golden goose until it is firmly in hand.

Well, anyway it seems that the deal has been re-struck, for now.

Simon declined to say whether he would still be seeking to have the town's abatement policy include provisions for wages and local hiring.

Yes, I'm sure he's in much better command of his tongue now.

If the law provides for a tax abatement if passed by the governmental body then that's the law.   And just for an example,  exemptions on property taxes over 65  is not equal application of the law.

But it's usually been justified.

What they did was:

1) Propose that if Zimmerman had killed a white kid, he would've got the death penaly.

2) Make the claim that by "marking a piece of ground" allows someone to shoot anyone entering that marked off area.

Total misrepresentation of the issues and outcome.

71 Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.com.

Bezos has also given to several candidates for office, predominantly Democrats. Democratic Senators Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell of Washington have been the biggest recipients of his donations. He's also given to Senator Pat Leahy, a Vermont Democrat; Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat; Republican Spencer Abraham of Michigan; and Republican Slade Gorton, a former senator from Washington. He also given regularly to a PAC run by Amazon, which has roughly split its contributions between the two parties over the last 10 years.

But Democrat States have to play the "evil big business" card in elections and then take huge campaign contributions from them to make laws favorable to them.

California has yet to learn this valuable lesson. The state government seems to operate under the belief that people and businesses are not mobile, that they can impose restrictions, regulations, fees, fines, and taxes with no negative impact.

My beloved Clownifornia has an annoying habit of trying to tax people's income for YEARS after they permanently move out of state. Not to mention the several "exit tax" trial balloons they've floated over the past few years.

The 2008 version that they tried to get onto the ballot would have imposed a 36% exit tax on income or unrealized asset appreciation over $5M upon moving out of state OR DEATH. The same ballot initiative would have imposed a one-time 55% wealth tax on assets over $20M. Not income, assets.

I'm pretty sure they ripped their entire script from the comments section of DKos. I'm surprised Al Sharpton wasn't listed on the credits as a guest contributor.

It was not funny. It made no sense. I didn't see any attempt at satire....they really did just regurgitate lib talking points.

California is completely dorked. They still charge a premium on income when moving to, or from the state. Solution....move in, or out on Jan 1.

I don't have a good place on that side of the house to put something like that up.  And besides, it would be in the way and ugly as hell.  I could build something like that easily (I used to put up antennas for a living a long long time ago) but I am trying to keep the thing pretty much hidden.

I could put one in the attic on the second floor which would probably give me about 50 feet but I just don't have a good way of getting the lead in wire down to the TV w/o drill holes and I don;t want to do that either.

They tried that" Local Hire Thing" enforcement for a Klueless  Mart in Oakland California..

Just name that ship the USS disaster...

Governor Moonbeam also had some hiring caveats, you must speak ebonics or some such rubbish to work in the City of Oakland when he was Da Mayo.

Detroit, hell they just wanted to Govern themselves..

That turned into Mad Max meets the appocalyps..

We all know the current situation with a renowned community organizer with Radical affiliations world wide, will not end well either..

How exactly would that work?  What if someone left the state and refused to pay?  And would college students get dinged for it when they left for an out of state college or university?

236 Well, anyway it seems that the deal has been re-struck, for now. If I were Bezos I wouldn't have bothered. There are other places that would be more than happy to have a distribution center located in their jurisdiction that wouldn't try to dictate down to the last detail how my business should be conducted.

Posted by: Blacque Jacques Shellacque at October 10, 2013 05:51 PM (/IXKu)

237 The state government seems to operate under the belief that people and businesses are not mobile, that they can impose restrictions, regulations, fees, fines, and taxes with no negative impact. It's because the larger high-tech companies here are loathe to pull up stakes and leave. If one or two had the guts to do it, I'm 100% sure there would be an attitude change in Sacramento real quick.
