Made Up British TV Shows
— Ace

I started this Twitter hashtag and couldn't quite get it working. It's actually a more difficult joke than I initially guessed.

So, that's where you guys come in. Can this joke be rescued?

I had noted that besides Python and The Office, there's actually not much British stuff that's actually funny. Some British guy (or an Anglophile) objected and named a whole bunch of supposedly funny British sitcoms.

They all sounded made up to me. Stuff like "Yes, Minister" and such. Like parodies of what Americans would think British TV consisted of. So I started making up my own:

Barclay Mews

The Duchess & the Dollymop

Reginald's War

Humprey Pye, Private in the Her Majesty's Territorial Army

'Ere's Your Bumbershoot, Love

'Allo 'Allo (which turned out to be a real British TV show, of course)

The Quite Remarkable Claims of Tuppence Twaddle

Paddington Station Belles

Oo, Me Bleedin' Corns Are Killing Me

Samantha Snogs

Well I Say! (a game show about famous quotations)

Bob's Yer Uncle!

Now you go.

By the way I have an Epic Comedy Premise much better than this but I want to write it up as like a real comedy thing, with .jpg's and fonts and everything, so that's going to take some time.

18 Not much British stuff that funny? 1.) Benny Hill! Not funny? 2.) British people (bad teeth, big ears and the majority of British women look like the men in drag). Not funny? OK there a FEW hot ones. 3.) 1776, butts kicked, 1812, butts kicked again. Not funny? 4.) the whole political system. Not funny? 5.) the fascination with royalty. Not funny? I rest my case. I guess I have a distorted sense of humor. I denounce myself.

Understatement of the year.  Even Benny Hill and Monty Python has a lot of dead shit in it.  My brother loves Mr. Bean and his wife gave him a DVD pack of one season of shows which we all had to watch last time I was at home around Christmas.

I went to sleep.

Hope he isn't reading this.

Maybe it's the over-whelming laugh track that makes me react negatively because some of the shows I think are kind of funny--Fawlty Towers, Black Adder--but again, not as funny as their fans think they are.

The Queen in the second Black Adder series, I like. And the WWI series, as with the Office, is good because of the poignancy.

Some of the Brit shows are excruciating. Red Dwarf? Ugh. I actively dislike that show. It's like negative funny.

437 There is  something  heroic  about  this  filibuster.  I agree with  Ace's  conversation  piece,  but  as  I watch  Rand  struggle  to maintain  this  filibuster,  I  find  it  strangely  heroic.   Facing  long  odds,  standing  up for  what  he  believes  is  right.  It  doesn't  matter  that  I wish  this  were done  on  matters  that  matter  more  to me,  he is  making  a  stand  on  what  he believes in.   The  fact  is,  this  does  matter  to  me.   Its  not  my  top  priority, but it is a  priority.   I  know  that  ultimately  it  will  fail.   But  success  can  be  found  in  failure.   To  the  extent  that this  props  up  the  base and  those  who  want  some  pushback  on Obama,  I find  it  very  welcoming.   Bravo,  Mr.  Paul.  Bravo  all  that  joined  him.   Regardless  of  their  reasons  for  doing  so.   This  is  in   the  best   spirit  of  America   and  American   government.   I  wish  for  more  of  it.

455 British humor does have it's moments; I particularly like little bits like this one from "Yes, Minister" in which a high-ranking British government official is having a very frustrating conversation with one of his department's lackeys. The dialogue is as follows:

Minister:  "Will you give me a straight answer to a straight question?"

Lackey:  "Well Minister... as long as you're not asking me to resort to crude generalizations and vulgar oversimplifications such as a simple yes or no, I shall do my utmost to oblige.

[Minister stares at him in disbelief]:  "Is that yes?"

468 OT: I was looking up something else and I googled the 3 AM Girls. They were some women gossip columnists hired by Piers Morgan when he was editor who were infamous for making up quotes. In 2007 Private Eye reported former 3AM girl Jessica Callan as saying that quotes for interviewees were made up by journalists: "The conversations celebrities had with us often bore no relation to the words which were printed in the column. On the odd occasion I didn't even know the quotes had been rewritten until I read the paper the following day... There was re-jigging and there was making up entire chats. Amazingly, we were never sued for having imaginary conversations". http://goo.gl/ZJZb6 So, this guy has a history of making up shit and hacking cellphones. 625 I'm late as usual to the thread, but wanted to recommend The Americans on FX.  Great new show about Russian and American spies during the 1980's. Tonight is I think the 5th episode and hopefully they'll repeat the earlier episodes often for those that haven't found the show yet. I was instantly hooked, great subject, cast, writing and performances.

So far, no Reagan hate either, aside from the Russians understandable fear of him.  One episode even had the male Russian spy telling his wife/spy partner that "they don't turn out socialists here [USA],"  which makes me all nostalgic for the 20th century.

Modern Toss and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place are as funny as anything ever to be broadcast, and those are fairly recent.  The Mighty Boosh and Snuff Box are funny shows and Boosh especially is highly imaginative, both of those being fairly recent as well.  The IT Crowd is genuinely funny, and that's very recent.  Not Going Out isn't half-bad, either, and that's in production still.

Blackadder from the '80s is practically a force of nature, it's so very funny and compelling, though the first, Medieval season isn't altogether as funny as the later three.  Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, also from the '80s, are awfully good as well, although obviously those are political comedies and semi-serious, not straight-ahead comedy.

Fawlty Towers from the '70s is as funny as Monty Python's Flying Circus ever was, only in more conventional and sitcom format.  And Are You Being Served? from the '70s and '80s is much funnier than anything rerun for decades on PBS has any right to be.

The Goon Show from BBC radio the '50s is as funny and imaginative as any comedy anywhere ever was, and in fact Python is the legitimate heir to the Goons, some of the Pythons having practically made a study of it in their boyhoods.

That list isn't exhaustive but it's a start.  There's not really a unitary "British comedy", in the same way that Saturday Night Live and The Cosby Show don't come out of some same, single strain of American comedy.  A person might catch an episode of Keeping Up Appearances which is a very particular, gentle, almost pastoral sort of British comedy, and compare that against SNL and conclude that "British comedy" just isn't funny, but that's to compare apples and oranges.

I've gotten to the point that I DVR new shows and wait until there's at least 3 or 4 episodes broadcast, and see that it hasn't been canceled yet, before I invest any time in them.  I'm hoping it draws a healthy audience, and it's good to know they've already announced a 2nd season.

673 The IT Crowd was hysterical. Keeping Up Appearances has its moments. The Young Ones definitely hasn't aged well.

687 British comedy was often only droll, like Waiting for God, or the Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, what's teh point...then I'd realize that's Us in 20 years.

688 Courtesy of Wodehouse: Bingo reported three days later that Rosie M. Banks was the goods and beyond a question the stuff to give the troops. Old Little had jibbed somewhat at first at the proposed change of literary diet, he not being much of a lad for fiction and having stuck hitherto exclusively to the heavier monthly reviews; but Bingo had got chapter one of "All for Love" past his guard before he knew what was happening, and after that there was nothing to it. Since then they had finished "A Red, Red Summer Rose," "Madcap Myrtle" and "Only a Factory Girl," and were halfway through "The Courtship of Lord Strathmorlick."

Benny Hill (with alcohol)

Young Ones is funny, but hasn't aged well. The band of the week bit is just filler and Alexi Sayle sucks whatever funny there is completely out of everything he's in leaving a massive vacuum of suck. Cut those bits out and you have about half of a very funny show.

Bottom, with Mayall and Edmondson is pretty good and be better than TYO, but only because Sayle doesn't infest it.

Jeanne noted Reginald Perrin which is quite good. Dad's Army is good, but it went on a bit too long.

It Ain't Half Hot Mum gets better after about season 4 and is pretty funny when they hit the front lines.

Open All Hours is very good and consistent for it's entire run.

One show that has been largely forgotten is "Citizen Smith". It was a send up of wannabe communist revolutionaries in some backwater suburb. Great stuff.

Ripping Yarns is good. Steptoe and Son was ok for a laugh.

692 More from Wodehouse (and thanks to Y-Not for kicking off my Wodehouse jag): It looked a battered sort of manuscript and, indeed, it had every right to be. Under various titles and at various times, Bromham Rhodes' and R. P. de Parys' first act had been refused by practically every responsible manager in London. As "Oh! What a Life!" it had failed to satisfy the directors of the Empire. Re-christened "Wow-Wow!" it had been rejected by the Alhambra. The Hippodrome had refused to consider it, even under the name of "Hullo, Cellar-Flap!" It was now called, "Pass Along, Please!" and, according to its authors, was a real revue.

693 I could try and make up American TV shows but I realised that even if I had been condemned at birth and subjected to a bog-standard state school education, or worse, an American education, there is nothing dumber than what is already on American TV. Now, if you'll excuse me I have to deal with a Chinaman bad-mouthing our food.

Warning: There's an american remake/rethread on MTV; stay well clear of it.

698 Sorry but there used to be one British show that was beyond hillarious and it was called "Coupling". It lastd only 5 seasons but it was one of the best sitcoms I've ever seen. Of course NBC tried to do a US version that failed miserably.

710 Bangers and M*A*S*H - Due to David Cameron's defense cuts, a catering unit in Afghanistan takes on double-duty as a mobile army surgical unit.

Eric the Half a Tank - Also due to defense cuts, Britain's only army tank - a new advanced solar model shared jointly with France on a rotating basis - is deployed to Afghanistan where it manages to roll 100 yards before becoming immobilized by a cloud.

Para Para - On the initiative of Nick Clegg, Britain's newly formed parachute regiment consisting entirely of disabled troops, deploys to Afghanistan.  The unit's only quadruple amputee parachutes into an Al Qaeda training camp taunting the astonished terrorists with "Chickens!" on her way down.
