— Ace I started this Twitter hashtag and couldn't quite get it working. It's actually a more difficult joke than I initially guessed.
So, that's where you guys come in. Can this joke be rescued?
I had noted that besides Python and The Office, there's actually not much British stuff that's actually funny. Some British guy (or an Anglophile) objected and named a whole bunch of supposedly funny British sitcoms.
They all sounded made up to me. Stuff like "Yes, Minister" and such. Like parodies of what Americans would think British TV consisted of. So I started making up my own:
Barclay Mews
The Duchess & the Dollymop
Reginald's War
Humprey Pye, Private in the Her Majesty's Territorial Army
'Ere's Your Bumbershoot, Love
'Allo 'Allo (which turned out to be a real British TV show, of course)
The Quite Remarkable Claims of Tuppence Twaddle
Paddington Station Belles
Oo, Me Bleedin' Corns Are Killing Me
Samantha Snogs
Well I Say! (a game show about famous quotations)
Bob's Yer Uncle!
Now you go.
By the way I have an Epic Comedy Premise much better than this but I want to write it up as like a real comedy thing, with .jpg's and fonts and everything, so that's going to take some time.

Understatement of the year. Even Benny Hill and Monty Python has a lot of dead shit in it. My brother loves Mr. Bean and his wife gave him a DVD pack of one season of shows which we all had to watch last time I was at home around Christmas.
I went to sleep.
Hope he isn't reading this.

Actual, real, and funny Brit comedic offering I can't believe anyone hasn't yet mentioned: The Mighty Boosh! Very difficult to describe, infinitely compelling. And the original Frye and Laurie show wasn't half bad either. (Honestly, I even enjoyed The Two Ronnies, frightful as that is to admit.)

Local PBS has been playing As Time Goes By once a week for the past 10 years. I think that show only ran for 3-4 years when it was made. You'd think they might change it to something (anything) different after all this time.

To tell you the truth, though I don't even think Monty Python is really funny. No way is it as funny as its rep.
Maybe it's the over-whelming laugh track that makes me react negatively because some of the shows I think are kind of funny--Fawlty Towers, Black Adder--but again, not as funny as their fans think they are.
The Queen in the second Black Adder series, I like. And the WWI series, as with the Office, is good because of the poignancy.
Some of the Brit shows are excruciating. Red Dwarf? Ugh. I actively dislike that show. It's like negative funny.

Modern Toss and Garth Marenghi's Dark Place are as funny as anything ever to be broadcast, and those are fairly recent. The Mighty Boosh and Snuff Box are funny shows and Boosh especially is highly imaginative, both of those being fairly recent as well. The IT Crowd is genuinely funny, and that's very recent. Not Going Out isn't half-bad, either, and that's in production still.
Blackadder from the '80s is practically a force of nature, it's so very funny and compelling, though the first, Medieval season isn't altogether as funny as the later three. Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, also from the '80s, are awfully good as well, although obviously those are political comedies and semi-serious, not straight-ahead comedy.
Fawlty Towers from the '70s is as funny as Monty Python's Flying Circus ever was, only in more conventional and sitcom format. And Are You Being Served? from the '70s and '80s is much funnier than anything rerun for decades on PBS has any right to be.
The Goon Show from BBC radio the '50s is as funny and imaginative as any comedy anywhere ever was, and in fact Python is the legitimate heir to the Goons, some of the Pythons having practically made a study of it in their boyhoods.
That list isn't exhaustive but it's a start. There's not really a unitary "British comedy", in the same way that Saturday Night Live and The Cosby Show don't come out of some same, single strain of American comedy. A person might catch an episode of Keeping Up Appearances which is a very particular, gentle, almost pastoral sort of British comedy, and compare that against SNL and conclude that "British comedy" just isn't funny, but that's to compare apples and oranges.

Young Ones is funny, but hasn't aged well. The band of the week bit is just filler and Alexi Sayle sucks whatever funny there is completely out of everything he's in leaving a massive vacuum of suck. Cut those bits out and you have about half of a very funny show.
Bottom, with Mayall and Edmondson is pretty good and be better than TYO, but only because Sayle doesn't infest it.
Jeanne noted Reginald Perrin which is quite good. Dad's Army is good, but it went on a bit too long.
It Ain't Half Hot Mum gets better after about season 4 and is pretty funny when they hit the front lines.
Open All Hours is very good and consistent for it's entire run.
One show that has been largely forgotten is "Citizen Smith". It was a send up of wannabe communist revolutionaries in some backwater suburb. Great stuff.
Ripping Yarns is good. Steptoe and Son was ok for a laugh.
