Mali Citizens Attack French and National Troops Jihadists

Well this is a nice story.

Malian troops bundled the men into an army truck, their hands bound behind their backs. For the better part of a year, the al-Qaida-linked extremists had banned music, insisted women cover themselves and began carrying out public executions and amputations in the towns of northern Mali that they controlledÂ…

Most fled as French and Malian troops advanced, but some stayed behind. Local militias began hunting them down, to turn them over to the troops.

In further Give The People What They Want (Until They Rebel and Begin Beheading Jihadists) news, some cock-eyed optimist thinks that Egypt may be heading for a counter-revolution.

Paul Rivlin, an economist and senior research fellow at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University, says Egypt is a wreck and that insight can be drawn from the two consecutive revolutions in Russia.

The February Revolution of 1917 toppled the Russian monarchy and established a provisional government which was overthrown in October 1917 by the Bolshevik revolution led by Vladimir Lenin.

And Egypt is a horrible wreck, so.

This is actually a neat insight (one of those insights that's extremely obvious... once you point it out). While a great many revolutions manage to grab up all power and thus establish stable (if dreadful) tyrannies, there are a lot of revolutions which are followed, lightning-quick, but counter-revolutions.

This chiefly seems to happen to intensely anti-human, fervently ideological movements which don't really care about what people want; they just want to make people behave the way they think people ought to behave.

And that leads to another bit of optimism: How enthusiastic will Obama's Zombie Mobs be for more of the same in 2 or 4 years?

One thing I've come to realize about a basic point of Ron Paul's foreign policy -- he was right about this, and I was wrong -- is that populations really do need to make their own mistakes. Our foreign policy is often geared to attempting to ensure that foreign populations don't do anything foolish or terrible... and, as with teenagers resentful of the authority of adults, that seems to make them just want to do foolish and terrible things even more.

Sometimes it might just be better (assuming no direct threat to ourselves) to let them massacre each other, and spasm from one authoritarian tyranny to the next, until they're so badly beaten up they actually seek outside counsel.

That doesn't mean I buy into the doctrinaire Strong Form version of his stuck-in-the-60s flower-child peacenik spiel.

But I thought this during Iraq, and I'm sure many of you thought this as well: We seem to be losing a lot of good American lives in order to make sure that one barbaric group in Iraq doesn't massacre another barbaric group in Iraq.

If they're keen on a bloodletting, maybe it's counterproductive to keep trying to prevent it. Maybe they need to learn, through the vicious school of experience, that bloodletting is something to be avoided.

You can explain something to someone but you can't understand it for him.

7 Only the people of a "nation" can determine what their form of government will be.  External forces can play at establishing a governmental structure, but it cannot be sustained without the support of the people.  And yes, many nations will revert to abominable tyrannical forms of government because there were not enough people willing to or capable of defending basic freedoms.  It is NOT our problem.


We have wasted too much of our national treasure in young lives and dollars defending transient corrupt regimes that will wither and die just to satisfy a politician's lust for world credibility.

Egypt's big problem is that their economy is based on tourism, and the tourists are staying away because they're afraid. Egypt's other big problem is that they import about half the calories they need to stave off widespread starvation, and they have to pay for that food with hard currency, which the tourists aren't bringing in anymore.

If the Muslim Brotherhood clamps down, the way it's feared they might, then the tourist industry won't recover and the country will starve. It already is starving; food prices are rising rapidly. That's what will make the people rise up, when and if.

11 We made so many obvious tactical errors in Iraq, after the fucking State Department took over from the military, that it is pretty hard to draw any democratization principles from it. Simply paying the Iraqi army to go back to their barracks so that they would have a paycheck would have made a world of difference in preventing the Sunni insurgency. 16 Hindsight is great and all, but toppling the Saddam regime was a good idea.  Pretty much everything that came after that was not, and those of us who were trying to defend it had a harder and harder time twisting ourselves in knots because some idiots in the Bush White House decided it HAD to be about WMD.

194 My problem with the criticisms of the Iraq War is that they're largely CYA and ignore history prior to 9/11.

In 2000 France and Germany were pushing to end the UN Sanctions.  After the war we learned that while Saddam didn't have the WMDs that we thought, he was still intent on rebuilding his capability once the sanction were ended.  So essentially we were left with a) remove the sanctions and hope his WMD programs never came to fruition; b) keep the sanctions imposed for however long it took for Saddam and his psychopath sons to die and hope that a rational successor took over; or c) remove Saddam from power.

C, in my mind, was the most rational choice.  Especially considering that our estimations of his previous WMD efforts, as well of other nations, were not so hot.

250 Not to hijack a thread, but I need some moron advice.   I had to put down my beloved 17 year old cat today.  As hard as it was for me (I was sobbing so hard they sent me out the back door), it's going to be worse for my daughter, who is away at college. 

In addition to being my daughter's constant companion throughout her childhood, this cat was the only thing that kept my daughter sane when her mom died of cancer when she was 15.

My dilemma:  she's currently going through a demanding, stressful senior thesis at college.   I'd feel like a traitor if I didn't tell her immediately, but I know if I do it will devastate her and screw up her thesis.

What would you do?

You have a few options.

1) not tell her until her trials are over.

2) tell her at once

3) lie to her and say the cat passed naturally and was happy in the end.

4) get her a new cat that can stunt double...(just kidding sorry)

It's a hard thing to cope with, she had to have understood intellectually that the cat was old, but we do develop ties to pets that served us in hardship that run as deep as any.

I'd probably go with option 3 myself.

I hope things work out, sorry for your losses.
