33 In January 2008, when Obama won a crucial primary contest in South Carolina, exit polls said a key reason for his victory was that 55 percent of voters believed Obama was most likely to unite the country — twice as many as those who said the same about his chief rival, Hillary Clinton. “We are up against decades of bitter partisanship that cause politicians to demonize their opponents instead of coming together,” Obama said in his victory speech that night. “But we are here tonight to say that this is not the America we believe in. I did not travel around this state over the last year and see a white South Carolina or a black South Carolina. I saw South Carolina.” That would be the last time he would see South Carolina. 44 Obama earlier this year launched what became known as a charm offensive, dining with a select group of Republicans; some of those whom were courted said it was too little, too late. “He’s actually a very nice man. He has a lot of personal qualities. He should do more of it,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who has worked with the White House on climate change, immigration, and a host of other issues. “He has some talent. It’s just not being maximized. “History’s not going to be about Republicans saying no,” Graham added. “It’s going to be about him not getting people to say yes.” Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee who lost to Obama in 2008 and has since been both an adversary and an ally, seemed to give the president the benefit of the doubt. “I’m not sure it’s all his fault,” he said as he walked through the Senate hallways last week. “We’re a very polarized Congress and nation right now. But he should do more outreach. He should have more conversations, more meetings, more dinners.” When asked whether Obama’s rhetoric about changing the tone of politics — one that worked to great effect against McCain — was just a political line, McCain demurred. “Every president wants that. And I think he particularly wants it now that he’s in his second term,” he said. “I think he wants it, don’t get me wrong. I think he’s sincere. I’m just not sure he exactly knows how to do it.”

Here's the story I mentioned on the DOOM thread regarding NH campgrounds.

Feds' stated reason for closing White    Mountain   National    Forest    campgrounds irks operator

Union Leader:  http://tinyurl.com/knadrsb

It was upsetting enough when Kent Tower learned the federal government was closing the campgrounds in the White Mountain National Forest that he's run for more than two decades.

But when they put up notices saying they were closed due to "health and safety" concerns, that was the final blow.

"We have cleaner bathrooms than anyone," Tower said Saturday. "We hire local police to come in and patrol at night. It's the biggest bunch of bull there could ever be.

Tower, president of Pro Sport Inc., estimates he'll lose $50,000 from the early shutdown of the 21 campgrounds and one recreation area he operates in the White Mountain National Forest under contract with the federal government. He's also spending an additional $13,000 in payroll to keep his employees on this past week.

"I wanted to make sure the campgrounds are safe," he said. "Plus these people are depending on their pay."

...

The early closure will also cost the federal government money, since Tower typically pays about 22 percent of his revenues to the government under his contract...

So not only are they closing    him down, but they're  LOSING MONEY during one of the busiest times of year   here in New England.

Idiots.  Fucking IDIOTS.

84 There was no "genocide" of the Indians. Spanish and Portuguese conquistadores unwittingly brought over eurasian diseases that wiped out the amerindian population. Disease spread faster than the white man. Most Indian tribes were wiped out without ever meeting a white man. Everybody just started getting sick and nobody knew why. Most deaths were due to starvation. They were too sick to work the farms. In North American this meant they couldn't survive winter. At least not in the #s they had before. By the time British settlers showed up, 200 years later, the North American Indian tribes had been devastated. British Empire and America only dealt with the survivors of the great die off. There was not genocide. There was a historically catastrophic die-off due to eurasian disease being introduced to the Americas. It was, sadly, inevitable. The germ theory of disease had yet to be discovered. The Spanish and Portuguese had no idea what was happening. They thought they were blessed by God that they could walk through cities of the sick and dying and not fall ill. They didn't know they were immune. They didn't know they had brought the disease.

86 The riot in Philadelphia, MS, as well as these two situations should be trumpeted by the right as what happens when an entrenched parasitic class doesn't get what they feel they "deserve" or, alternately, no limits are put on what they can take.

If this were a sane country, it would be enough to spur a major overhaul of the EBT system. Of course, it won't, as Barry and the Dems consider his record EBT payments to be a success.

The barbarians are already inside the gates.  We let them in and now give them free stuff to mollify them so they won't tear the place up.  Excellent plan.  I hear it worked out well for the Romans.

Barry and the Dems will never change things because the system as it is now constituted is the key to their continued power.

A smart man would say, "kill the hostage, I don't care." Because it is not too long before the demands of the FSA terrorists cannot be sated.

An even smarter man, who has studied history, not the leftist version, would note that riots have never benefited the instigators.

90 Weinstiein opinion hit piece on Cruz in the DailyCaller and my reply to one comment post in particular:

http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/14/
thedcs-jamie-weinstein-ted-cruzs- aw-shucks-act-is-wearing-thin/

This post is indicative of the pathetic nature of the current republican party, and why the whole "big tent" was doomed to fail from the start.

everyone at that meeting, including Ted Cruz knows that there has to be a tax collection mechnism/agency,  what they are talking about is bottom up reform and a widespread if not complete wash out  of the current employees to try to return the agency to revenue collection instead of political power retention and social engineering.

This is common sense, for you to characterize it as otherwise is either ignorance born of living in a democrat dominated culture, or a mendacious lie.  Either way your not a conservative.

Weinstein does essentially the same thing with his column.  What he doesnt understand or is attacking for the benefit of the McCains et. al.,  is that Cruz beat David Dewhurst in Texas.  David Dewhurst is as powerful as Cornyn ever was in Texas, it was Dewhurst's turn to be senator, but Cruz beat him on a specific campaign, and now he is actually following thru, a miracle, with what he promised on the campaign trail. He is doing what his constituents elected him to do, and if the rest of the republicans would join him they could at least get concession out of the democrats, possibly as great as delaying obamacare for a year.

Anyone that negotiates knows that you dont start negotiating with your final offer, except for the current republican establishment, which is why thy are losers.

The bush tax cuts were made temporary because McCain undercut us and the republicans were weak.  No child left behind, republicans trying to get along with democrats. Medicare part D, republicans trying to out democrat, democrats.    But yet republicans couldnt pass a small reform of privatizing 5% of social security, where you are forced to contribute all your life and when you die, even if you didnt even use the principal, it all goes to the government instead of your children.

The Republican party, as it was constituted in 2006, is dead.  Change or die.

They also required an operator for the elevator, evidently Mooch does not know how to punch an elevator floor button.

That's Obama's MO - remember this from 8/3/2009?

"When President Obama welcomed the chief executives from 13 of the nationÂ’s biggest banks to the White House last Friday, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs billed it as a “good, productive, and frank” conversation. Emphasis, it appears, on the frank. As first reported by PoliticoÂ’s Eamon Javers, and confirmed by ABC News with industry sources, some bankers gave explanations for the industryÂ’s high salaries, such as "competing for talent on an international market."  But, President Obama cut them off. "My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks," the president told them."

What a great story!

Pit   bulls  suffer from    the reputation of being vicious, bloodthirsty killers   because     unfortunately a lot of people who adopt them do so for precisely those reasons.    They want mean dogs that LOOK mean.     They don't treat them like beloved pets, but rather as    part of the furniture.   But if a pit bull is part of a loving family that can take care of them   properly,   they can be wonderful pets.    They were called "Nanny Dogs" in Britain at one time, because they were so good with children.    That part of their nature has been forgotten and, unfortunately,   allowed to    atrophy.

I'm glad TaterTot got a happy ending.     I've got a fear of    dogs that dates from when I was a wee lass, but I always love to hear    great stories like this.

I don't know how you will end up in the US regarding Ted Cruz

Here in OZ our brand new PM Tony Abbott has been vilified by our lefty MSM for years and yet he had a comfortable win in our elections last month

He survived all that crap and is now PM - people obviously made up their minds in spite of the constant Abbott is a baddie Abbott will take away your rights and probably your firstborn rubbish

Us of a conservative inclination now just yawn at the Abbott666 stuff - so predictable and so wrong but still  a constant refrain in our MSM and now so boring

BTW I have a special interest in what happens in the US as my daughter, son in law and grandson live in San Diego

There has been a continuous chatter of small arms fire for the last several hours, Ace, as big-box stores are looted and in many cases, burned. Interestingly enough, electronics were the first things to be taken, instead of food, water or clothing. All the camping equipment remains on the shelves.

And this is exactly what will happen, too.   It will start with, "I'm gonna get me   a   new big screen!"   Then by the time they figure out that they should have grabbed food, the smart looters will have cleared   out the   food shelves and there will be nothing left but     stale bread and milk that's started to turn to cheese.

The   uproar over that symbol of American history is a prime example of "critical theory"   advanced by the Frankfurt  School    with the expressed purpose of destroying our society:  take a symbol,  manufacture something wrong  about it  and criticize it, get all the fellow travelers in the   media to parrot  the  meme, and viola! Instant hatred of your own culture,  which  is then  spread to other institutions.

Is there any other society that has survived such overt attacks?

208 they really don't need to do it when food prices are increasing 30%/year.

They're experimenting in a controlled environment.  A WMT is handy for that.

The 10pm timing is quite suspicious too.  That couple hour window between 10-midnight is when traffic is winding down, but not quite to 3am levels yet.  There's still a lot of people wandering around who can propagate the news.

Actually WMT traffic persists until about 1am.  There's a burst around midnight that lasts an hour or so when swing shifts get off work.  By 1am that's all dissipated and the place is largely vacant until about 6am when people start stopping in before going to work.

The 10pm timing was PERFECT for a news propagation/response test without prompting a response of a magnitude that might have resulted in riots and serious casualties.

The main reason nobody tried to go West was because they knew about how far it really was from Lisbon to Delhi going West through absolutely uncharted space. Chris ignorantly underestimated the girth of the earth, but, importantly, being dead wrong didn't stop him from finding backers. Also, aiming for India-Indian latitudes, he crossed the Atlantic, not at the worst line (vs Northern routes previously taken by Eskimo and Viking and who knows who-all else) - but if he hadn't bumped into the island, he might have not hit land 'til Panama, if they'd made it that far. I don't condemn him for being a brutal, arrogant, racist thug in modern sensitivity; he didn't get where he got by being a sweetie-pie. Pirates and sea captains, a breed. He was not great. He was just Captain Idiot as far as being at the center of history's most astonishing (however inevitable) 'accident.' (Perhaps I should more respectfully say Captain Moron.) He died never knowing he hadn't reached Asia. Captain Christopher Moron Columbus, thanks, dude. Without you, I might've been born in Europe!

There should be IN DEPTH congressional inquiries into what kind of SCM process this EBT handling code is using.

232 I can't believe WalMart in the EBT story. The employees called corporate to explain EBT cards weren't showing a limit and corporate said honor them. Someone at WalMart needs to be fired for that. Those poor employees had to restock all that. Who knows how much money those stores lost.

Heh.  On the third day in my new HS back in    1970, there was a race riot over   the school's display of the Rebel flag,  which tied in with the school mascot, The Rebels.

What  a   welcome to high school.

235 I'm surprised that the Holy Cross Crusaders survived the outburst of anti-Patriotism that swept Academia after 9/11. People tried, but never got anywhere beyond being allowed to have a couple public bitchfest-rallies. Well, the name of the school is Holy Cross. So they are screwed regardless.

Store to corporate to either Xerox (EBT handling) or Dept. of Agriculture (Agency over EBT). We know it got as far as corporate. The question is to whether Xerox is on the line for their f*cked up system or Ag said "pay it".

245 Looks like at least one person was detained over the EBT thing. Apparently the bitch had $700 worth of food in the cart and, when they swiped her card, they found out that the limits had been turned back on and she only had $0.49. WalMart said they'd drop charges if she left the food and walked away.

250 A typical Walmart SuperCenter has between one (slow night) and three (busy holiday season) 40' trailer trucks arriving every day for incremental overnight restocking.

The telling thing will be how fast those stores get restocked back to normal levels.  They're restocked out of regional distribution centers.

If the distribution centers were prepared for major restocking, then the whole thing was a setup

266 >>>Wrong. WMT knows how the media would cover it if they denied food to a bunch of African-Americans. They were wise to honor the cards.

Agreed. Giving away the food was the cheap solution in Socialist America where EBT charges you!

Anyway, At least for this one store, yes, they need to get reimbursement from corporate for the shoplifting that occurred and was encouraged by the HQ. In the end this shows the real dangers of EBT, of decoupling what you get from what you earn. The dangerous culture of entitlement which destroys the concept of moral and honorable behavior. Walmart extended the honoring of EBT on the assumption of honorable behavior. When met with that little sequential version of the prisoners dilemma, it shouldn't be much of a surprise that they were met with a whole lot of folks who abused it and destroyed it with individual unethical acts.
