Martin Bashir Out at MSNBC
— Ace

MSNBC has a stable of troglodytes, but Bashir's vulgarity was too much even for them.

A couple of idiots from Politico were discussing MSNBC's lineup on their video podcast a couple of weeks ago, and one likened it to "Animal House."

Central to the leftist's sense of vanity is his mistaken belief that he is an elevated person, in taste, intellect, and culture. In fact, he is none of these things. In almost all cases, he actually aspires to mediocrity -- or at least he would aspire to mediocrity, if he weren't already so convinced he had nothing else to prove to the world.

Martin Bashir directly challenges that self-flattery. Not only is he thick-headed and crude as a general matter, but he routinely resorts to provocations so vulgar that only the crudest malefactors in the Fightin' Fightin' Nutroots could fail to notice their vulgarity.

As such, he's bad for business. Starbucks could not con people into buying $6 cups of coffee if, directly beside the register, stood a magazine rack openly displaying vintage copies of Hustler.

Of course, the rest of MSNBC's lineup is similarly crude and thuggish. Ed Schultz is a red-faced rage-drunk, Al Sharpton is a rabble rouser with a body-count, Lawrence O'Donnell gets menacingly angry talking to women and occasionally challenges people to streetfights (people he knows won't accept the challenge, by the way), and Chris Matthews alternates between frothing accusations of racism and sending video selfies of his on-air visible erections to Barack Obama.

Meanwhile, of the alleged "smart ones" -- the ones who play to the leftist's erroneous self-conception of belonging to the intellectual and cultural elite -- Rachel Maddow is a conspiracy-theory loving imbecile whose concept of analysis is a sneering head-tilt, and who routinely pushes Alex Jones level nonsense out to a gullible public. Chris Hayes, despite his pretenses of reasonableness, is true-believing hyperpartisan goon.

But Martin Bashir's ratings were the lowest of The Low lineup, and so he's gone.

4 I'll never forget that Bashir first made his name in the US with that Michael Jackson interview. Don't get me wrong, Jackson's a freak but Bashire lead him down the road in some odd places, climbed up in the tree with him and really let Jackson show his true inner weirdness... but Martin wound up playing him like he was his best friend.

7 I would bet closed caption viewers filter these pukes out pretty quickly. The voice, something that compels many to listen, including the supposed-to-be-smart-meme Brit accent, if scrubbed, would make a huge difference to viewership.

Those who have low ratings have to indulge in shock to get attention.  I therefore want to advise Piers Morgan to put on a Miss Muffet costume and announce to the world that he is a raspberry scone.

No, I don't know if it will help his ratings - I just want him to do that because I am cruel.   And that would be as close to truth as he is likely to get.

Yep, I came to this realization just recently myself. I use to think of these leftists and proggies like we used to fear the Soviets back in the '50s and later.  I thought they were uber-competent, conniving, master stragetists hell bent on installing Socialism and transforming the US into their master progressive utopia.

But now, I've come to realize what utter incompetent boobs they are. They don't know anything really. All they have is words and theorizing. Put them out in the wild to live like, say most of our ancestors did back in the 19th century, or hell, the the 20th until after WWII, and they'd starve or get killed in no time.

They look down their noses at us and the rest of the country as a bunch of backwards provincial hicks and imagine themselves grand cosmopolitan sophisticates. But they aren't. They are the provincial hicks. Their provinces are the liberal enclaves in NY and the left coast and DC.

They are the idiots, the stupid ones. Any redneck down here in my neck of the woods knows more real-world valuable stuff than they do.

You know, when I was a young teenaged horn dog back in the late 70s and early 80s, you had the big three, Playboy, Penthouse, and Hustler.  Playboy had a reputation of showing too little, not dirty enough, and Hustler was just too sick. It was low brow stuff, pretty vile. But Penthouse was just right.

I'll always remember the excitement when I managed to get my little hands on a copy of Penthouse for my own around the age of 13 or so. That was contraband of the highest order and I dared not keep it in the house, anywhere. I hid it way out in an old shed way off in the woods. Had my parents caught me with that, I would've been dead.

And that's the way it should be. Back then, had I had access to the internet and the porn galore there, some of it which makes Hustler look high brow, I would've probably killed myself from fapping OD. Had I lived, I would've probably been too jaded for sex by the time I was 18.

I worry about these young boys and all that internet porn.

199 The funny thing is Cooke is out there saying Bashir's firing is something we shouldn't celebrate. i see what he means. I'm conflicted on the point. *** As I just tweeted to Cooke, I adore him, but I believe he is wrong about this. Bashir's behavior, on-the-job, was unacceptable. He was not fired/asked to retire because of his personal feelings, but because he aired those personal feelings on-air, at the expense of his employer. This is not the same as with Alec Baldwin, who offends on his own time. As for Cooke's argument that Bashir apologized: An apology does not equate to repentance. This is hardly the first time Bashir has crossed the line.

200 I'm not sure it's a great thing. It's almost a guarantee that what they replace him with will have higher ratings. I would prefer this station auto-erotic asphyxiates itself out of existence. Bashir was the equivalent of a sturdy doorknob and nylon rope.

201 >>Posted by: Mallamutt, RINO President for Life at December 04, 2013 05:05 PM Yeah, I'm not conflicted, either. For one thing, he didn't get fired because of either some bone-headed "Stop Rush" type astroturf thing, nor did he get the axe after someone like the POTUS used his bully pulpit to press for it. It's pretty clear MSNBC was clearing dead wood. And, in terms of what he said, seems to me it should have been an FCC violation. I mean, it was obscene and pretty close to inciting violence against Palin. So this isn't some grey-area PC-ness run amok thing. This is a guy who did a crappy job AND pushed the envelope of what is acceptable for TV too far.

202 200 If the Republicans had brains and balls (I know, I know) they would push to unbundle cable tv offerings and force Comcast to offer a la carte pricing. This would also punish Disney and ESPN because lot's of viewers would drop ESPN in a heartbeat. I find it interesting that at cable's inception, that was the way it was supposed to be available, a al carte...As soon as it was approved, cable companies immediately started bundling. It's going to be (more) dinosaur as streaming takes hold methinks.

Which I've found a little weird, because when I was forced to listen to Air America, he seemed like the least crazy among them.  He was pro-shutting down the boarders (although he probably said it as a wedge issue) and he tried to get his angry callers to listen to slight reason.

I still hated him, but I hated him less than the other idiots on that station.

Hey Ace, something occurred to me that I would like you to consider.
It's only loosely related to this topic, but I believe it is directly related to the left's sick and hopelessly habitual mentalities.

I've come to this conclusion: Any kind of hazing is tribal and sick and inexcusable. I'm not talking about one-off harmless pranks where someone is kidded into believing some silly proposition. Nor am I talking about ribbing someone someone on his foibles. - Giving someone a "hard time" over some personal deficit/insecurity or other.

I am talking about two parties both voluntarily entering a power dynamic where one gets to abuse the other and the other accepts the abuse. The abuse doesn't have to send the one being hazed to the doctor for it to count as sick and inexcusable. Rather, the minimum criteria is that the treatment is ritualistically humiliating - regardless of whether it causes physical pain.

An example that I think most useful is found in several scenes in the crappy Linklater film, _Dazed and Confused_. (Though I have to admit I think Linklater's _Slacker_ is excellent independent and avant-garde cinema.)

In _Dazed and Confused_ there is a scene where high school girl juniors submit themselves to hazing by graduating seniors - so that next year they will be considered the cool kids in command of the high school social scene. The hazing primarily consists of being sprayed with condiments (ketchup, mustard, etc.), doused with flour and then being required to embarrass one's self with servile and other ridiculous behaviors. All done in public in front of a laughing audience of peers. No one gets physically damaged.

This is not just stupid.
It's sick and bizarre tribalism.
There is something profoundly sick about insisting that by voluntarily submitting to abject humiliation that this somehow confers superior status to those who "tough through it". Superior in what sense??
And it's not just bad for the humiliated; it's likely worse for the humiliators. It validates the notion that bullying can _ever_ be justified.

And I believe this is true whether the hazing is taking place in a college fraternity or in military school or on a professional sports team or in prison.

Hazing is ultimately about a perverse and abusive exercise of undeserved power.

And the insight of that last sentence leads me to this - likely controversial - claim: Hazing is of a sick mentality that belongs to the left. It's based on an obsession with mindless tribalism. There is nothing macho about it.
Whenever the topic should happen to arise, anyone who would consider himself conservative should universally condemn hazing.
It comes from a sick, leftist mentality.

214 Dave,

That rant has nothing to do with this topic. I don't believe tribalism is left or right. I also think that wanting everyone to condemn hazing and bullying whenever they come up is PC nonsense. Kids should be taught to kick bullies in the nuts, and make their own decisions on the benefits gained from enduring hazing. The world is tribal, we choose what tribe we wish to belong to.

215 Considering the quality of literature available in truck stop magazine racks I shudder to think about the state of the average highway truck sleeper. Oh and considering the depravity that represents political discourse these days maybe duelling should be reintroduced. I actually think leftists know-or at least expect-they can get away with spewing whatever garbage they want. If the media would ever become balanced the left would be defenceless.

Name @ comment 222,

I agree with you that children should bet taught that bullies should generally be stood up to and even dealt with by using violence in self defense.

But you are flat wrong about tribalism. And I certainly do not belong to one.
Tribalism is a primitive concept that was most useful back in the stone age. Nowadays the practice of tribalism is likely the most effective in the mafia and in street gangs. Tribalism is about power and hierarchy.

The reason the reason conservatives should dissociate from such sick, tribalistic practices like hazing is because such abuses of power are the polar opposite of being free thinking and ruggedly individualistic.

Question for you, name: Would you encourage a child (even your own if you had/have them) to participate in hazing? Or would you discourage it?

The condemnation of sick practices like hazing and bullying is in no way a "PC"-policing of free speech.

I WANT the fools on the left to speak out in favor of such sickness. So that I can speak out against them for their foolishness.
I am not saying that any topic is off-limits - which is what I would have to be doing in order to engaged in being PC.

I _WANT_ these things discussed.

It's my observation that the hazing mentality is a leftist one.

Name, perhaps you will enlighten us to the good benefits associated with humiliating others through hazing.
While you're at it, tell us which tribe you belong to - since you claim to belong to one.

226 Rugged individualism? And scared of hazing? People choose to be hazed. I didn't. My children haven't. We aren't scared of it, we don't choose to do it. If someone else of less self worth wants to pay that price, I will let them.

You want a conversation about tribalism? I'm a member of a clan, my dad taught me that, his dad before and so on. My kids know the same. We aren't afraid to go into the great unknown and face the world, because we know we have a whole tribe to avenge us if things go bad. I don't need your recognition of my clan to make it real.

As far as the Alberta Oil Peon, I'd bet his life is closer to mine than yours, and I'll bet we're both more rugged individuals than you are. I could be wrong, but I don't care.
