So yeah, there are some benefits. Posted by: mugiwara at May 01, 2013 09:14 AM (W7ffl) Everyone knows at this point my wife was a cheerleader. For a year or so she ran a dance team that did a lot of USO stuff and things like that. At one event, the local cops vs fire department boxing thing, she and her best friend helped all the other girls get ready first. They all leave. The best friend helps my wife get ready and the wife leaves. So the best friend and I are the only ones still in the dressing room. "Hey, come help me." Apparently, there's this giant brush that looks like you'd put blush on with it, but it's actually got glitter in it. "Put this on my legs while I finish my makeup." Being a guy, I attempt to do this and it comes out in a big chunk in one spot. She mock glares "Well? Fix it." So I'm down on one knee, rubbing glitter all over this seriously hot girl's legs and one of the other dancers walks back in and freezes. The best friend doesn't bat an eye, "Don't worry, his wife knows. We're good."

>>>Some of the Newtown families pushing for legislation totally unrelated to the crime that impacted their lives, has successfully erased any empathy I once had for them.

Look, I feel bad for them. I honestly do. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose a family member under those circumstances.

However, it is getting to the point where they're using that dead family member's memory as a cheap political prop.

The link I put up is of one of them giving a hard time to Kelly Ayotte because of her vote on the gun bill. That's fine, you can go to your representatives and senators and complain. It's a Democratic Republic. You should be complaining or talking to the people you represent you.

But am I supposed to believe it wasn't staged? A decent contingent of media members just happened to be there?

Also, I don't think the woman is from New Hampshire, so Ayotte isn't even her senator.  Furthermore, why Ayotte and not a Republican in a red state? Well we all know the answer to that.

It bothers me that this stuff is staged and planned. That these people are turning themselves and the memories of their loved one into cheap props.  All the while not pushing for anything concrete. They simply want a gun control bill passed. They don't seem to care what is in it or if it will in face prevent another mass shooting.

I know a research ethics expert who can serve as a consultant!

Actually quick note about this.  You're partially right.  Thanks to the animal rights morons, animal testing is fading fast.  To get approval for early stage human trials the FDA requires only 2 animal tests in different species.  There are varying arguments over how much the FDA nitpicks your various choice of species (I've always felt not much.) Then there are early stage Phase I's (about 50 people) then Phase IIs (a few hundered people) and finally phase III (upper hundreds, to a few thousands.)

But beyond that in order to get labeling for use in children (and AFAIK 15 year olds should count as children) you'd need to do at least 1 phase 3 study specifically in children. (As well as present data from your 2 phase 3 adults and post-marketing studies.)

Here's the thing.  I can present you with a TON of articles showing that pharmaceutical companies don't like to do this pediatric studies.  They're expensive, possible legal problems, and often the market isn't big enough (there are exceptions, like allergy meds.)  In fact, it's so bad that the government has added patent extensions as carrots to get them to do these studies. (In part because doctors were using them off label anyway, sometimes to ill effect).

And yet I'm supposed to believe that the makers of Plan B just ran out and did them on their own? Yeah....I'm thinking no.  But this isn't off label usage (by definition).  So if my guess is right (spoiler: it usually is) the FDA is violating it's own regulations on this one.  (Of course you'd need to FOIA the FDA for the phase III data on Plan B.)

I got it, I just thought I'd add some knowledge.

The worst part is that post marketing data studies.  Unless the FDA specifically put them in place, there's usually no formal "Phase IV" studies (the sort of de facto name for post marketing release.) (There are annual reporting requirements, but the Clinton defesnse of "I didn't know" seems acceptable there.)

There's the Adverse Events Registry, but that's not put together by the drug company it's a hodgepodge set of reports that aren't even rated by causal link. (So if I start taking a drug, and vomiting my doctor may report it to the registry even if it's possibility of being caused the drug is "0" because we know I ate some bad fish the night before and my entire family is sick.)

Now pharma companies have enlightened self interest to go through the database to head off any problems.  But I just got done reading the FDA guidance on "Pharmacovigilance" yesterday for a project I'm doing to finish out my job.  And...well....if I'm reading it correctly they concede that non formal post-marketing is..problematic.

Things stupid    teenage    girls   (BIRM)     will do with Plan B:

1) Take it before    AND after    sex, to "make sure" they don't get pregnant

2)    Take it a few days after they've had sex, because they "forgot" and what's the difference?

3) Take it as regular birth control

4)    Buy it for and share      it with their friends,      ignoring potential     complications that    could    result if a friend    suffers from a health condition that may be exacerbated or triggered by the Plan B hormones

5)    Sell it to younger girls who are not old enough to buy it over the counter but are still sexually active.   Black market morning after pills FTW!

6) Grind it up and put it in the food of girls or teachers they don't like,   especially if they're pregnant.   I've said before and I'll say it again:    there is no more vicious, uncaring, cruel and MEAN    force on earth than a pack of teenage girls.

7) Take it for several days or weeks after a sexual encounter, again to "make sure."

Drop    some in the pill bowl at a "Pharm Party"    for anyone to scarf down with a     handful of other drugs and a can of beer.

Those are all just off the top of my head,   and    say nothing about    how     early and prolonged use of Plan B can have devastating consequences for a woman's overall health, let alone reproductive health,   and even less to say about how OTHERS will misuse this new OTC loophole to    help in their    abuse young girls and women.

How exactly does a 15 year old show proof of age, btw?      Someone care to enlighten me?   I didn't even get my driver's license till I was 17, and the only picture ID I had was my high school ID card that I got my freshman year (age 13) and had every year after that.  There was no age info on that card -- just my picture, my name, and the name of my high school.   It was     heavy laminated paper.  I could have made    one myself in my bedroom with some card stock and a laminating kit.   And we don't think kids will use their fake IDs to buy beer AND Plan B pills?

This is a very, very stupid idea.

The weakness from the ADP report could cause expectations to dim even further.

Briefly searching the Clinicaltrials.gov data base pulls up a big fat 0 for "Plan B" "Studies with results" and "Ages 0-17."

Strangely it looks like someone is trying to do a study using Mirena IUD as a form of emergency contraception: http://goo.gl/1NL2r (Note the age group, specifically 18-45.)

I'd also note this is really weird because it just doesn't make sense. I mean it'd only make sense in some bizzaro world where a law was passed mandating the coverage of every form of contraception regardless of cost.  The a pharmaceutical company would have a huge incentive to push their expensive product into every corner of the market to maximize profits. (Ignore WashU as sponsor for that BTW, they're probably fronting for Mirena makers.)

So yeah....that.  (:sigh: if only I could get within earshot of a freaking congressman)

Oh right, I was going to comment on that prior to AtC getting me all bothered about FDA regulations, how we're killing people, and why pointing this out probably lead to me being fired.

Anyway.

I read the Gonorrhea article and in part it sounds like people trying to gin up support for further funding of their pet project.

Let's state up front: we have a huge antibiotic problem coming.  For about 150000 reasons (overuse, lack of development, etc. etc. etc.)

Having said that.  This "superbug" has killed precisely 0 people.  It seems to have (based on the article) a very short incubation time, meaning that it'll be harder for people to spread it.

So in many ways it's exactly not like AIDS (which actually became transmittable well before any signs of infection, which is part of what contributed to it's rapid spread.)

Now I'm not saying this is a non-issue, but I am saying that it may amount to the rough equivalent of SARS (anyone remember SARS? Yeah, that's kinda my point.)

Although it could spread like wild fire, we'll just have to see! (it may be worth pointing out that in direct competition antibiotic resistant bacteria usually lose to their wild type counterparts because being AR requires extra expenditures of energy not useful in an antibiotic free environment, so this may simply drop off the map as people get infected with a shit ton of different diseases.  Which is ironic really.)

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is bringing high-profile political figures, business leaders and campaign donors to Utah this summer for a retreat to discuss “key opportunities.”

The four-day event will feature speeches from Republicans, including RomneyÂ’s 2012 running mate, Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, and some prominent Democrats, according to a report in the Boston Globe.

President Barack ObamaÂ’s former senior adviser David Axelrod and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who served as chairman of last yearÂ’s Democratic National Convention, are also slated to speak, according to an email sent to Romney supporters.

201 (Reuters) - Private-sector hiring slowed again in April as companies added the fewest employees in seven months, the latest sign the economy is encountering a soft patch, a report by a payrolls processor showed on Wednesday.

Businesses added 119,000 employees to their payrolls last month, according to the ADP National Employment Report, falling short of economists' expectations for a gain of 150,000 jobs. It was the smallest gain since last September.

March's private payrolls were revised down to an increase of 131,000 from the previously reported 158,000.

207 Age has to be verified,  apparently.  It won't be available where there is no verification.

Also I keep seeing comments at Hot Air that this formulation is abortifacient,  its not.  It's a contraceptive.  It doesn't interfere with an established pregnancy, there has never been any direct evidence it interferes with implantation, and direct evidence it delays ovulation.  It is by NO MEANS 100% effective,  its effectiveness diminishes rapidly with any delay;  this window would be longer if it interfered with implantaion.

The thing is, and athing I worry about  with younger girls, this idea that it is a sure thing if used as directed.   It isn't.  It isn't at all.

215 Support for Obamacare has hit the lowest level since the bill was passed, the latest Kaiser Health Tracking Poll shows.

Overall, just 35 percent have a favorable view of Obamacare while 40 percent have an unfavorable view, which ties an October 2011 poll for the lowest level ever.

The twenty-four percent who voted for Obama have no opinion on the law which, according to Kaiser, continues a recent trend of Americans offering no opinion.

I know what you're all thinking "he's losing his job?! How."

One answer, Vaccine trials baby! (Incidentally, I'm one of the few people outside of the medical staff on those trials capable of reading and understanding almost every aspect of the consent form including any prior studies listed.  Screw everyone else!)

(Reuters) - Private-sector hiring slowed again in April as companies added the fewest employees in seven months, the latest sign the economy is encountering a soft patch, a report by a payrolls processor showed on Wednesday.

"A soft patch," eh?    What a novel way of describing a grinding, neverending,   intractable    recession     that's      essentially    a depression.

Businesses added 119,000 employees to their payrolls last month, according to the ADP National Employment Report, falling short of economists' expectations for a gain of 150,000 jobs. It was the smallest gain since last September.

"Falling short of    expectations" = "unexpectedly."

OK, just got back from prepping for a Monday meeting that’s bound to fail – but it’s not going to be my fault.

BC, IÂ’ll match your story.  A few years ago, Mrs P and I were vacationing at a B&B in East Haddam, CT (a quite ritzy locale).  Because one of Mrs PÂ’s friends had just lost her boyfriend and was feeling in the dumps, we took her along with us for a change of scene.  There wasnÂ’t an extra room for her, so we got a cot and while the two girls took the bed, I took the cot.

Comes the next morning.  Mrs P walks out to the kitchen for a cup of tea.  I follow.  At the breakfast table are three couples, and we do the usual chit-chat – how are you, where are you from, what are you doing, etcetera.

Then the friend comes out of the bedroom.  I should point out that sheÂ’s a very luscious racktastic redhead, and as she came into the kitchen, she was just slipping a robe over a sheer nightdress.

The couples look at her, then back to us.  By this time the friend was getting a cup of coffee, so I whispered to her, “Trust me.”  I turned back to the couples, put my arms around both womensÂ’ waists and said, “Well, youÂ’ve already met my wife.  And this - ” – at which point I stuck out the tip of my tongue just enough to make it look like I was running it around the friendÂ’s ear – “ – is our friend.”

Later, Mrs P said she wished she had known I was going to do that, since she would have done the other ear.  Ah, missed chances.

238 I agree on cutting the Newton parents and husbands a bit of slack on their grief and pain.  It must be unbearable.  I understand the impulse to want your child or wife's death to mean something.  But, they are attacking the wrong problems.  They need to address the issue that people who are known to be mentally ill with violent tendencies are not in mental wards getting help.  They need to address making schools safer from people intent on mass murder.  The average school is just a box of targets conveniently ready for mayhem.

If the age of consent is 15 (which it is in many, but not all states), then it would be statutory rape OF THE BOY.

Even with an age of consent of 15, 15-17 year olds can only have sex legally with partners that are within 2 years of their age. This, too, probably varies a bit state to state.
