Medal of Honor Recipient Bryant H. Womack, Pvt. First Class, USArmy
— Dave in Texas

For conspicuous gallantry in action in Korea near Sokso-Ri, 12 March 1952.

Army medic Womack has a medical center at Ft. Bragg named after him. PFC Bryant Homer Womack, 14th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division sacrificed his life to administer aid to fallen soldiers during a hot firefight in March of 1952. His courage and devotion to duty was recognized and awarded the nation's highest honor for bravery in combat.

Pfc. Womack distinguished himself by conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. Pfc. Womack was the only medical aid man attached to a night combat patrol when sudden contact with a numerically superior enemy produced numerous casualties. Pfc. Womack went immediately to their aid, although this necessitated exposing himself to a devastating hail of enemy fire, during which he was seriously wounded. Refusing medical aid for himself, he continued moving among his comrades to administer aid. While he was aiding 1 man, he was again struck by enemy mortar fire, this time suffering the loss of his right arm. Although he knew the consequences should immediate aid not be administered, he still refused aid and insisted that all efforts be made for the benefit of others that were wounded. Although unable to perform the task himself, he remained on the scene and directed others in first aid techniques. The last man to withdraw, he walked until he collapsed from loss of blood, and died a few minutes later while being carried by his comrades. The extraordinary heroism, outstanding courage, and unswerving devotion to his duties displayed by Pfc. Womack reflect the utmost distinction upon himself and uphold the esteemed traditions of the U.S. Army.

His memory will be honored tomorrow at Lebanon United Methodist Church in Mill Spring North Carolina.

God bless his memory and comfort his family.

Like Michener said in his novel of the Korean War, "Where do we get such men?"

7 You know, Hollywood hasn't made a decent Korean war movie in a long time. We had MASH, but I can't think of anything else since.

I read SPACE by Michener a long long time ago. I learned more about our space program in that fictitious novel than I did anywhere else.

Since we've been giving money to the Norks...they probably don't want to draw attention to the whole subject.

Posted by: wheatie at April 27, 2013 03:32 PM (3B3wv)

18 And MASH was "really" about Vietnam symbolism... Seems to me, there's a ripe opportunity for Hollywood to make another historical piece like Eastwood did with WWII. There many stories of heroism and bravery like this that need to be told. Why aren't they?

Posted by: EC at April 27, 2013 03:33 PM (doBIb)

19 Speaking of Korea, guy at the range next to me today had a beautifully restored Korea era Garand, and the guy next to him a pristine Mosin, which I shot for the first time, which is why I have ice on my shoulder right now.

What a mule.

There were a lot of men that did incredible things during  OIF, but the only way you would know is if you read it on some Mil-bloggers website.

Because the story that the Media wanted to push was "Abu Graib!"  or "No WMD's!"  or this week's body count.

23 EC- 'sup. And yes Ms Tammy. An Old North Stater are you? Posted by: Tobacco Road at April 27, 2013 07:29 PM (4Mv1T) Technically, no, Road. I am a Georgia native, but so far north ( Rabun County) that we were all but in NC. I have many many family members there yet, and deep roots in that fine state. My Aunt Carlene lives on the Qualla Boundary rez.

Glad to see some other Tarheels here. (I'm from Charlotte, parents were from Marshville and I'm a distant relation of the late Senator Jesse Helms.)

Was thinking about this topic a bit lately...... after traveling along Robert C. Byrd Hwy in WV..... thinking to myself, WTF!?  They should name these highways after heros in the military... or heros in everyday life like heroic cancer victims that will not give up or something....or an historic event..... name a highway after something to be proud of....or someone whose behaviors you want to highlight.... not some blowhard narcissistic political hack.

Paul Simon (and his f*cking bow tie) Hwy in Minn. gets me everytime too..... WTF.

34 Tammy- you were close enough. Posted by: Tobacco Road at April 27, 2013 07:40 PM (4Mv1T) Yep. Depending on where we were at on my Grandpa's place we could be in either state. Then if we went over a ways east to one of my uncle's, we could be in GA or SC on his property. Always figured I'd retire there, but Mama ended up in Arkansas with her people, so here I am.

Pretty place to live or be from. I used to go through Kings Mtn routinely on my way to Black Mtn, headed to school in the '70's

Tobacco Road, I miss Charlotte more than a bit, though I lived there 'til age 36 ( I married in 2000 and moved to Northern VA.) Used to complain about Charlotte when I lived there- what an idiot I was! A late bloomer, to be sure...

EC, I like the idea that someone like you is hoisting the black flag in the Queen City these days. Kiss a patch of ground for me, will you?

48 Tobacco Road, I grew up in Olde Providence and we moved a few times after that around SE Charlotte. My folks built a house on Carmel Rd. in 1978 to live next door to my Dad's parents. Graduated from South Meck in '81. It's killing me to even type your screen name. Though I missed commenting on the e-cig thread, I'm tobacco "free" (again!) today after 30 years of some fine Marlboro Light 100s. If Berserker is reading this, honey, I am your suffering sister in spirit.

51 Lady S. I went to Myers Park, class of 74. Please don't throw anything. Your school painted our giant press box RED at the ball field in about 72. Probably other times. My very best friend in the world in my 20's went to South. Probably a 73 grad. Lost him to cancer in 85.  I grew up in Barclay Downs between the high school and what became South Park. And I quit smoking in 89.

My nic is just a geographic location. Think "Duke, UNC, and NC State" basketball.

52 And congrats on kicking the smokes. A hard job to be sure. I craved tobacco for about 10 years, but it was less and less.

"Bridges at Toko-Ri"  Movie had Mickey Rooney, Grace Kelly and William Holden.

Driving through WV  in January, I found various tunnels or highways or bridges named after people whose names were preceded by a military rank.  I was never in a position to write them down so I could research them afterwards.

Was at Bragg summer of 1970, Hearts and Minds school.  Never knew where the med center's name came from.  Glad to hear of it now.

I need this kind of reminder from time to time to keep me from being too concerned about my own troubles.

What men!

60 "Big dogs". Aw, that's cute, pretending that someone who sets out to be a frequent commenter has any importance or value. At all. Hint: you don't. Not one tiny bit. You're a commenter on a blog.

The only people on a blog who count are the blogger or any cobs to whom the blogger has tossed the keys.
