— Ace Interesting piece from John Hayward, building on an argument made by Jacob Sullum at Reason.
The media often defends itself from charges of bias by confessing to other sins -- sensationalism, laziness, simple lack of expertise, etc.
Let's focus on laziness. I believe the press is extremely lazy -- but I also believe this laziness has a strong ideological edge to it.
I divide in my mind reportage into Hard and Easy reporting. Hard reporting consists of ferreting out a story from those who don't wish to divulge it. Easy reporting consists of accepting the spoon-fed claims of lobbying organizations, pressure groups, who hand-deliver all the difficult parts of a story right into a reporter's hand.
It's difficult to know who to ask questions of. But if a pressure group has a list of "experts" or "witnesses" for the reporter to contact, all the reporter has to do is make a couple of phone calls and then type it all up.
There's an ideological edge to this laziness, though: Reporters get their pre-fabricated stories from lobbying groups, politicians, and pressure groups they are predisposed to trusting, and all of these groups lean to the left (or are outright self-identifying as progressive).
The easiest story for a reporter to write is the one that is basically dropped on his desk. To work to get "the other side" of the story, and truly vet claims, would take, well, work.
Consider: Groups aligned with Justice4Trayvon can tip a reporter that there is video showing George Zimmermann looking reasonably healthy as he enters the police station after the attack. These groups probably already have the tape themselves.
It's the easiest thing in the world for ABCNews to now run that tape.
What would take work is to determine Zimmerman's appearance immediately after the beating -- that's not hand-delivered to them by a Justice4Trayvon pressure group, so it would take some work to get the pictures of a battered and bloody Zimmermann from the prosecutors' office. You'd have to do a lot of source-chiseling and favor-trading to get those.
And work is hard. So they don't bother. They have the easy story. Why bother with the full, accurate story?
In addition, it's always the case that agreeing with the herd is the safest position to take. Political correctness is always a good safe harbor for the stupid or uninformed, and every reporter knew that in this case that they would not be challenged nor would they be subject to the scorn of fellow members of their class if they simply went along with the script and demonized George Zimmerman. If they were wrong, they would all be wrong together, and hence they could not suffer, in relative terms, compared to any other member of their class.
On the other hand, pushing back against the demonization of George Zimmerman entailed risks.
Yes, as the media often claims when defending itself, it is indeed incompetent, ignorant, and lazy. Yet if there were not any underlying political bias we'd expect them to be wrong to the benefit of either "side" more or less equally.
But that's not the case at all; their errors run to the benefit of a single "side," consistently. And that's because ideology tells you what to think when you don't quite no what to think; the more unsure of the facts someone is, the more he relies on his basic worldview and ideology as a first approximation for the truth.
And in the case of the media, that first approximation (and the second and third approximations, oftentimes) is the liberal ideology.
Incidentally, the prosecutors today led the case by quoting George Zimmerman as having said, on his cell phone call to the police, "F***in' punks."
Which is what skeptics had said he'd said.
But that's not what the media claimed he said.
And where did they get this story from? From leftwing bloggers and podcasters.
How could they make such an enormous error? And more importantly, how could they possibly feel comfortable making such an enormous error, without any caution at all?
Because they all knew that if they were wrong on George Zimmerman's claim of saying "f***in' coons," not a one of them would ever be called to account for the error by those who matter, other members of the press, other members of the Media-Government Complex, other members of the dominant aristocratic/liberal culture. They could afford to be wrong without any consequences.
The only consequences would fall to George Zimmerman, and their viewers. And they're of a lesser class and racist to boot, so who cares about that?

email from "Organizing for Action) (which is a tax exempt social welfare organization):
Now, this is huge news:
President Obama is set to announce his plan this week to address the growing threat of climate change.
We'll know more specifics on Tuesday, but it's expected he'll offer a bold, national approach to reducing carbon pollution -- and lay out a vision to lead global efforts to fight climate change.
The powerful, well-financed forces who still deny the science behind climate change aren't going to like this -- and they'll be fighting this progress every step of the way. In fact, before he's even seen the plan, House Speaker John Boehner is calling it "absolutely crazy."
That's why President Obama is calling on all of us -- anyone who believes that climate change is a threat -- to join him in taking action right now.
(bold national approach --- watch your wallet, folks)
And an endorsement from Gen Wes Clark:
When Hillary Clinton took over as Secretary of State, AmericaÂ’s image around the globe was badly damaged. Since then, weÂ’ve ended the war in Iraq. WeÂ’re winding down in Afghanistan. We decimated al-QaedaÂ’s leadership, and helped democracy grow in the Middle East.
Supporting Hillary is an easy decision for me. I know sheÂ’ll steer us straight at home and represent us right abroad. We all know that Hillary would make the best president for our country.
(Is this even worth responding to?)

Hopefully, Zimm will get off on this trumped up charge. Then he can turn his attention towards the networks who framed him with their lying and misrepresentation of the facts surrounding this case.
Then, he should sue the state of FL and the DOJ for failing to enforce the law when the NBPP put out their bounty on his head.

I view the whole Trayvon-Zimmerman incident as a real life version of Dave Chapelle's "Keeping It Real" sketch.
You've got a somewhat questionable guy in Zimmerman who wants to be the hero/watchman guy who is taking the neighborhood watch a little too seriously. Then you've got Trayvon, the wannabe thug(or perhaps actual thug based on his record).
These two people just happen to meet at the exact wrong time and place and it ends with one of them beaten up and another of them dead.

If there were ever an actual case where a young black man was unjustly killed for "walking while black", someone with more credibility than those two rent-seeking bottom feeders would be taking up the case.

First name use is a diminutive thing. It's the way in which one speaks to and of children.
And the preferred narrative of the media is one in which "Zimmerman", the sadistic hulking monster, chose to profile, stalk and murder the tiny, innocent, defenseless child "Trayvon".
That was of course further buttressed by the incessant use by the media of years-distant photographs of a gently smiling TM wreathed in baby fat about about age eleven. Instead of the contemporaneous photographs of the scowling, tattooed, much bigger postpubertal TM, flipping a double bird to the camera.

Mr. Comey continued to vouchsafe the strength of the case against Dr. Hatfill in internal Administration deliberations long after it had become clear that the FBI had fingered the wrong man. Dr. Hatfill ultimately won a $5.8 million settlement from the Justice Department.
Yes, once again the taxpayer gets stiffed for illegal and unethical actions by a public employee. How about we make a new law that all of the settlement must come from the employee until he and his immediate family are bankrupt before hitting the taxpayer.

Neighborhood watch is/should be some guy who calls the police when he sees someone suspicious. It's actually pretty stupid to approach someone who looks suspicious. The events that took place bear that out.
The person you're following could be violent or armed.
But Zimmerman probably saw himself as a police officer in his own mind. He approached someone who looked suspicious, a fight ensued and a person was killed.
He should have simply called the police. It's actually pretty explanatory in the name. "Neighborhood WATCH". You keep an eye out and call the cops if you see something suspicious.
I'm not defending either side here. I think both sides acted stupidly. I think Zimmerman put himself in a bad situation. Although as soon as Trayvon physically attacked him, Zimmerman didn't appear to have any other recourse than to use his firearm. The entire situation could have been avoided.

That piece of videotape with Zimmerman arriving at the police station had nothing to do with laziness or mistakes.
ABC broke the story and ran the video as it appeared. NBC then took the feed of that video and ran it through their editing machine.
When it played on various MSNBC shows, the critical portion of the tape, where a policeman walks around the back of Zimmerman, looks at the back of his head, brushes off something from his shoulders and returns around the front of Zimmerman was cut out.
At that moment in the Zimmerman saga, MSNBC and the rest of the media were promoting the narrative that Zimmerman had no apparent injuries.
It wasn't lazy. It took work to edit the video and draft the lies. This was a concerted campaign to get Zimmerman arrested and convicted.
Fucking bastards.

Nope. Oh, and prepare yourself for a carbon tax, either at the pump or assessed through a device on your car - federally mandated, of course.
As to Zimmerman...if they don't get murder 2 they will get him on civil rights violations or something. The wonderful thing about this is that my Dad and my sister live in Orlando. Oh happy day.

I've seen multiple deranged people state in all seriousness that the act of Zimmerman (possibly, if it even happened)) asking Martin what he was doing was an example of him Zimmerman trying to detain Martin. Therefore, Martin was justified in punching him.

What's worse is that there WOULDN'T be riots if we didn't have the idiot MFM telling us that there WILL be riots. Sure if we impeached Obama there'd be some protests somewhere, and maybe some riots here and there; but they'd be isolated incidents. Thanks to the idiot MFM, these small, localized expressions of unrest get blown up to a national scale. It's ridiculous.

The very first thing that George Zimmerman did was to call the police.
And if Zimmerman's intent had been to "approach" Martin, all that Zimmerman would have to have done would have been to open the door and step out of his truck as Martin first came up to it.

Yup...and I *know* the law in this type of case from Ohio anyway.
They try to say that "of course Trayvon may have attacked him but hey he was scared!"
Uh "yeah" guess what sports fans that is not a justification for assault....now you'd probably get a pass from Law Enforcement if you gave a slight offensive strike up to closed fist that did not draw blood to establish your space...
MAYBE
You mount and ground and pound you just engaged in a potentially lethal assault end of story...
I don't like what happened BUT what is at stake here is not G Zimmerman and the HOA's judgement in being too cheap to hire a pro it is the very foundation of self-defense doctrine....
NOBODY has the right to maim you or put your life in peril unimpeded and if a person is in sincere fear for their life they can put you down if you engaged in hostility.
The rebuttal is God help you if you use lethal force to secure your life b/c you are going to run the risk of losing your life anyway legally.
None of this is small 'taters and I am extremely weary of the effort by Holder and Florida and Race Bait inc to make "self-defense against blacks" illegal for the same reasons I was angry at the genuine civil rights abuses that took place just prior to my birth....
I believe in the rights of all people.

If Zimmerman is found guilty, then we can chalk up another of of the pillars of the republic that's been corrupted beyond repair as it exists today.
The only reason this whole incident is national news is because the regime of Dear Leader deemed it so. They're opening the door wider for political incarceration. They need a conviction, and they won't stop until they get one. We just think that someone got to John Roberts. The DOJ will make sure the jurors understand their fate if they find Zimmerman not-guilty.

That being said, depending on your neighborhood and state laws, it is not too late for you to buy a gun if you don't already have one. If you are in California, the waiting period means that it is probably too late for you to take possession of a gun you buy today unless the trial goes on for a long, long time.
Posted by: Ben at June 24, 2013 01:32 PM (C2Y4l)
Could have been avoided by Trayvon not having a single parent home, having strong parental guidance keeping him from the thug life, instead of being suspended and shipped upstate - he should have been incarcerated in a juvie facility. 7/11 needs to consider a policy about not selling the components of Lean - watermelon iced tea and skittles. The real crime that needs to be investigated is how the parents let him change in a few short years from the innocent looking image they have plastered on every wall - to the prowling, paranoid thug with a gold grill.
Its a shame Zimmerman sustained that beating, he should have been more aware of his surroundings and dropped Trayvon 15ft away. Its a crying shame that the Sanford police screwed up the PR because of their previous problems with Zimmerman protesting police racial bias and incompetence.

Some here have stated that Arizona cannot recall McCain and Flake. I found this on the Gateway Pundit. There doesn't seem to be anything in this that would limit recall of a Senator.
Federal law may be something else, though.
Arizona Constitution Article 8, Section 1.
“Every public officer in the state of Arizona, holding an elective office, either by election or appointment, is subject to recall from such office by the qualified electors of the electoral district from which candidates are elected to such office. Such electoral district may include the whole state. Such number of said electors as shall equal twenty-five per centum of the number of votes cast at the last preceding general election for all of the candidates for the office held by such officer, may by petition, which shall be known as a recall petition, demand his recall.”

Read up on the particulars of the Oscar Grant shooting out here in Commiefornia. And the resulting kangaroo trial.
As here, a case where any objective examination of the facts would have resulted in a no-bill, and the defendant walking free, but instead was taken to trial as a murder rap. In response to threats that a failure to bring murder charges would result in massive rioting and property damage.

she has expounded on that pertinent to the case in the context of the left's gymnastics on Zimmerman(who has what 1/4 the African blood Obama does?) being a "white hispanic" the whole paradigm is fallacious...we'll never get past race if we give gold stars based on it...
I digress

Maybe Zimmerman should just take some 'personal responsibilty' (you guys love that concept, right?) for picking a fight with an unarmed, innocent teenager, then murdering him when he was getting his ass kicked for starting the fight. Just a thought.

My neighborhood watch does patrols. If they see a person who seems out of place in the community they approach and ask if they can be of assistance in locating a specific residence or resident. They do not automatically call the police unless they actually observe illegal activity or results of possible illegal activity ( open door, window, etc).
Seems to me that Zimmerman went over and beyond the requirement of prudent caution. I'm not on our neighborhood watch but if I see someone in the neighborhood who is suspicious I will approach them. I've done it before and I'll do it again. If they decide they want to harm me, I guess I'll be in the same situation as Zimmerman. Maybe not though since I'm in Texas.
We don't even indict people who blow away suspected burglars exiting your neighbors home. God bless Texas.

Seems to me, people who want to convict Zimmerman will find reasons why they think George Zimmerman did things they think George Zimmerman shouldn't have done.
So far, I've yet to see one good argument that shows how Zimmerman did anything that could be remotely construed as illegal.
The burden of proof remains on the prosecution to prove he did. I can't imagine how they are going to do that. Whether you think Zimmerman erred in some other way is frankly, irrelevant.

It's undisputed that he shot and killed Trayvon. The defense concedes this as true, so they prosecution doesn't really have to prove it.
The defendant can't just say "it was self defense, now you prove it wasn't" and expect an acquittal.

Sure, I guess I wasn't being specific, in that they still have to show what he did was illegal. Technically, the jury can't assume just because you pull a trigger, and the bullet results in death, that a crime has occurred.
It changes the dynamic of what the defense has to do, of course, but still, the burden of proof remains with the prosecution to show there was something illegal about it.

It probably doesn't help that many of those lovely ladies are preyed upon by 35 year old Hispanic men. When I was a missionary it was very typical to find out the family we'd visited with had a 14 year old girl who was living with her "boyfriend" who was 37.

Yeah?
"okay" why am I fighting a black kid there champ?
I've done it before and did rather well actually but seriously what makes you think any sane person seeks out physical conflict?
I was paid fairly well to subject myself to the risk of violence and to take attacks on a principle if need be.
You think I ever "wanted" violent confrontation?
With one exception where I snapped the answer would be no, and I interdicted an assault in progress.
The zealousness of my action led to a DPD friend of mine suggesting I not go into Law Enforcement and I heeded that but *why* precisely do you fantasize the right wants to fight your mythical "would be champion" the "angry black teen?"
I mean I am aware c**ts like you wish to use them as shock troops in riots and to intimidate the public but why would I prefer to fight or be afraid of anyone if I can get paid just to walk the line?

Especially if they are cranked up on PCP or meth or just red rage. Years ago, my husband's BIL had a half-brother who was prone to those red rages when drinking. Ronnie was a little, skinny, wiry guy, but, when he went into one of his rages, he could outfight 4-6 really big guys--because he was not feeling the pain, no matter how badly they were hurting him, which was often bad enough to put him in the hospital in critical condition.

Honestly, I think their theory is convincing a jury to ignore facts, and convict on their outrage. Which I suppose is possible, but I sincerely doubt it.
The left, on the other hand, is taking a win/win view of the whole thing. Convict, and we can put the fear in anybody who lawfully uses their guns. Lose, and we get to riot the riot of outrageous outrage.

I am not sure that nation wide riots is going to work to the Democrats advantage. Most people of any race prefer to have a peaceful life. For the most part they want to see the law upheld and a period of anarchy right near their homes is going to remind them of that. Then there are the various scandals who's common thread is that the Obama administration is lawless. When everything is copacetic, the Republican reputation for law and order diminishes in importance compared to free shit. When a store that you have shopped in is looted and burned, personal safety looms larger as a voting consideration.
And last but not least there are the LIVs who voted for Obama on the theory that if they voted for a black man there would not be any more race riots. Those people will feel that somebody broke the deal.
That is why it will be a disaster for Democrats if Zimmerman is not convicted.

Yep, the urban areas are lost. The suburbs and rural areas are solid red, and some of the suburban counties are almost as populous as the urban county they're tied to. For example, Dallas County votes blue, but Collin, Denton, Rockwall, and Ellis County more than makes up for the stupidity.

A simpler way to put all this would have been that as soon as they heard that a nominally white guy was patrolling his neighborhood, and ended up shooting a black kid, they started to salivate, and ALL they wanted to see and hear from that point on was that some white guy was out hunting black kids - even if they had to doctor the evidence to see and hear it. They rely of victimhood for their power, and racism is their favorite flavor (it's the easiest). They DESPERATELY wanted it to be real, and so they did their best to make it real.
They didn't care that it was, for example, absurd that a guy who's out hunting people would call 911, and give them a play-by-play. Nothing else has supported what they wanted. The guy was even mixed-ethnicity, and with a history of standing up for blacks - they don't care - he's STILL a white racist, as far as they're concerned.
