— Ace This picture is actually Pulitzer-worthy. The judge in the Gosnell trial set aside some seats for the media, as judges do in high-profile cases.

Meanwhile, a Washington Post reporter explains why she covers all sorts of national issues but hasn't written a word about this one.
@mzhemingway Hi Molly - I cover policy for the Washington Post, not local crime, hence why I wrote about all the policy issues you mention.
— Sarah Kliff (@sarahkliff) April 11, 2013
Note that Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a dirty word got a lot of coverage by this reporter, but this story is just a "local crime story."
Like Newtown was. But then Newtown had "national ramifications" for legislation... that the media desired. This story also has national ramifications for legislation... that the media does not desire.
[T]he thing is that IÂ’m getting kind of sick of pointing out egregious bias only to see things not just remain bad but get worse. Just think, in the last year, we saw the media drop any pretense of objectivity and bully the Susan G. Komen Foundation into funding Planned Parenthood. And then we had how many months of coverage focused on someone calling a birth control activist a bad name? And who can forget every pro-life person in the country being asked to respond to Todd AkinÂ’s stupid remarks about rape?So our abortion-drenched media would certainly want to cover what is arguably the countryÂ’s most horrific serial murder trial of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, right? Well, far from the front-page, top of the news, daily update coverage you rightfully would expect, itÂ’s been downplayed. Majorly downplayed.
...
But gosh darn it, can you think of any policy implications to this, uh, “local crime” story? And that’s all it is. Just like a bunch of other local stories the Washington Post also refuses to cover — local crimes such as the killing of Trayvon Martin and the killing of Matthew Shepard and the killing of students at an elementary school in Connecticut. Did the Washington Post even think of covering those local crime stories? No! Oh wait, they did? Like, all the time? Hmm. That’s weird. But did they cover them in terms of policy implications? Asking politicians for their views and such? Oh they did that, too? Hmm. So weird. Oh, and Sarah Kliff [Ms. Just a Local Crime Story -- ace] herself wrote one of those stories? Well, gosh, I’m so confused.
And what policies could possibly be under discussion with this Gosnell trial?
...
Journalists arenÂ’t exactly coming to her defense either. In the words of Andrew Kirell:
Yeahhhh, so IÂ’m pro-choice, but this Gosnell story is awful. And oh boy does it look bad for reporters normally on the health/abortion beat.
I've got one question for the media:
If the jury votes for the death penalty, how are you going to explain to your readers your complete embargo on this story? I imagine at this point you'd have to note that someone had received a capital sentence; at that point, what's your excuse for having not said a word about it?

I've said it on twitter but it bears repeating here.
in 2012, BMJ published an article on "after birth abortion."
It was a miserable piece of crap based on Singer's work.
I saw several news articles about it.
Strangely here it is being lived out in real time on our own shores, (not so theoretical anymore is it?) and suddenly silence.
If they ever let me near a classroom after I finish this degree (they won't, but still) I'm going to make people read what little Gosnell stuff there is right next to the BMJ article and say "Ok, so theory, practice, relationship? Do you feel sick now?"

They probably don't "have to note" a guy getting a death sentence until PA gets ready to carry it out, which won't be an issue for Gosnell because he'll die of natural causes before all the appeals are finished.
Maybe if NARAL or the NCAAP or the "Free Mumia" crowd protests the death sentence, they'll cover that...with no details ("sentence received for the death of a woman.")

Even if they do Radish is right, they'll say it's for the death of the two woman he killed as a result of the procedure (not the 100s of babies.)
Then they'll say "see this is what will happen if abortion becomes illegal, this EVERYWHERE."

This is the culture we live in now. The blood-drenched culture of death. Makes you wonder if there are a few or many Kermit Gosnells out there still working away. These unwanted clumps of fetal cells are not going to abort themselves.

Holy Shit! From Slate.com
If you're pro-choice, say, and you worry that the Gosnell story is being promoted only to weaken your cause, you really should read that grand jury report. "DOH could and should have closed down GosnellÂ’s clinic years before," write the investigators. Why wasn't it? Were state regulators nervous about igniting a political fight about abortion? Is the regulatory system incompetent or under-funded? And are there other states where the same could be said? Social conservatives are largely right about the Gosnell story. Maybe it's not a raw political story. It's just the story of a potential mass murderer who operated for decades as government regulators did nothing.

How about the study linked to by Insty yesterday that babies can recognize their mother's voice as soon as they are born? That it means they begin processing and recognizing sounds somewhere around 10 weeks--TEN WEEKS--before they are born.
The last sound those little babies heard was the only sound they could recognize--their own mother's voice screaming in pain.
I want to cry.
When I get depressed and think about events that are destroying our country, especially the events of the last 6 years, and I ask, "Where is God?" It's news like this; when we can't even stand up for the little babies, why would God stand up for us?

I really wish that someone would run the story. All it would take is one (non-Philly) "Real" news outlet. Then they couldn't avoid talking about it.
Better, then people might start asking *why* they hadn't been told about the story from the National news outlets.
I think that's a question Conservatives in the public eye don't ask enough.
We all know that suggestion abortion clinics meet the same health and safety standards as, say, a nail salon is anti-woman (somehow). But what never happens is that the accused (that is: the person who suggested we hold abortion clinics to such lofty and unatainable standards) never turns around and says, "Please explain that. Why would holding them to the same standards as a nail salon restrict access. No, take your time. I'll wait."

In the three Synoptic Gospels the Crucifixion narrative takes place during the feast of Passover. In John's Gospel, however, it takes place a week earlier during the time of preparation. Hence the Crucifixion would've taken place amid the screams of the lambs who were being ritually slaughtered for the Passover.
That's almost a direct quote from a fragment of a lecture that I heard over forty years ago. I don't know what suddenly brought it to mind but now I think I need to cry as well...

I think that since this has been going on for over 40 years with the imprimature and approval of our government, that God has had time to consider this.
Consider that our present situation as a nation could be part of His judgement. It will get worse. We have asked for this and now we are going to get it, good and hard.
Gosnell himself MAY get the death penalty (is that still on the books in Pennsylvania?) but being his age, he will never be executed. He will either die in his cell or some sentence will be commuted by some "compassionate" judge as his health starts to fail.

That right there is the absolute truth of the situation, and why the national media will absolutely not cover this. You can drag them kicking and screaming into this, kick their dog, upset their luncheons, say mean things about them on Twitter, but the coverage will not materialize.
That is how powerful the culture of death and the sacrament of abortion is to these people.

For the life of me, I don't grasp why you, and all the conservative bloggers gives a dead rats' left testicle about what the biased old media reports on.
Because, even as bad as their ratings/readership are, more people know of (and either watch or read) MSNBC, CNN, The NYT, and the Washington Post. That doesn't even get to the national "local" networks of ABC, CBS, and NBC and their nightly National News programs.

We thought that about Fast & Furious, Benghazi, "Rev" Wright, and a hundred other etc.'s.
Point taken, however, the gruesome, stomach-turning details in this tend to go right to the heart of anyone who still has one. The descriptions are bad enough, but there are plenty of pictures to accompany them, which I've had the unavoidable opportunity of seeing.
These are clearly not "clumps of cells." They're innocent babies who didn't deserve the heartless death they got at the hands of Gosnell and his staff.

Surely you see we must give up some rights so that crimes like this CAN'T HAPPEN!!!!
MSM Kermit Gossnell: Eh he's just a single bad actor. This sort of rare incident is unavoidable if we want to be free. In either event we'll never get rid of all the bad actors no matter how much we regulate and that will just make abortion less available. We can't in any way infringe on our right to kill our children which means there really isn't a broader scope to the story other than one man committing a crime.

I'm sure they are comfortable with Life Imprisonment. That's where I kind of work on a different pier than my church. When it comes to being Citizen, I have a "stick to theology" approach to my Church. As far as I can recall just punishment of the sovereign up to and including death, where merited, is not in any way condemned by the NT and certainly not the OT. They usually want to bring up the stoning of the Adulteress. At which point I remind them
1. That was a mob. Not a sentence of a court representing the sovereign delivered after hearing evidence.
2. The sovereign of Israel at that time (Rome) had made stoning illegal.

Yeah, I'm with everyone on wanting a link to that. I can see an
argument for maybe, maybe aggravated negligent manslaughter but murder
seems a bit much. Then again, every state is different in nomenclature
so what's aggravated man I in one state is homicide IV in another.

Our stance on not mortgaging the next six generations for hookers and blow cost us far more than abortion in votes.
If votes are all you are worried about. Be a democrat and shill for votes. Just toss freedom in the trash, start bribing, start selling hate, and with the current market trends you'll have all the votes you want.

But not the kind of guys I want to have a beer with. We need more regular guys and gals running things, so that when a lefty challenges for a fight, when they push you in the chest you punch them in the fucking nose and make them choke on their own blood.
we don't need hibrow. Our positions are clearly hibrow. our communications need to be lowbrow in your face with this kinda shit. We are not going to win by talking about "debt ratings" and "minting a trillion dollar coin". We win by saying they are going after your guns and allowing babies to be murdered, and not saying anything against it.

Yeah, that makes the Hive-Mind thingy plausible. They wouldn't need any outer directive because they've already internalized their marching orders.
At the risk of appearing to be less than the he-man I think I am, I can't last long on these threads. Just thinking about what I already know about this makes me queasy. I can't think of a suitable punishment for Gosnell, his staff, or anyone else who engages in the murder of innocent babies. And I have a really good imagination.

The National Enquirer gets a bad rap, in my view. They love sensationalism, sure--mainly in the form of celebrity scandals--but look at their record over the decades. They're the ones that nailed John Edwards, for example. They're the American equivalent of Britain's Fleet Street, but given the failure of their more respectable journalistic brethren to report, you know, the news, I'll take what I can get.
On an even trashier note, I also find myself missing the now-defunct Weekly World News and sometimes wonder what happened to Bat Boy. I hope he's okay.

I know. I read these stories about high school boys getting a girl drunk and gang raping her, and her classmates harass and ridicule her until she kills herself. When I was a kid, I was taught to respect and protect women. To do otherwise was the simply unmanly. So now, in the age of the metrosexual, and hipness of unmanlyness, girls are used and thrown away. This is what our society has become.

The dissolution of the family via feminism and political shenanigans (combined with a general societal decline) has led inexorably to this. Generations upon generations now that believe they should not respect an elder, are shocked that people don't respect elders? This isn't true for all of us, but our national political screwups aside, the culture or society itself is fast moving towards the point of having a critical mass of 'superfluity' - of people who by choice make themselves superfluous. I will not blame those who because of the accident of their birth or because they are old cannot hold up the contract, but to those who have taken the slow easy road of decline, when the time comes, what mercy will there be for them?

Great idea. Prominent conservatives should start saying things like, "Harry Reid is the Kermit Gosnell of the U.S. Senate."

I saw the pictures. I needed to, but that's just me. No, those images don't go away. I want them there. It strengthens my resolve.
As an aside, it should be remembered that those who opposed slavery and advocated its prohibition were considered radicals in their day. In the years leading up to the Civil War, vehemently anti-slavery politicians were considered extremists even by fellow Whigs. Please note there is no longer a Whig Party.

I know, Anna. It is still hard to grasp that we aren't that far from the cruelty of the past. And evidently some are practicing in the name of the same 'faiths' as those barbaric ones. Just on different altars.
I always find a bit of wry, frustrated amusement in any statement about how human society is supposed to have "evolved" out of some behavior. People haven't changed one bit since the stone age - technology advances, cultures change, but humans are just the same, for both good and ill.

Oh, they already abhor abortion. But they've convinced themselves it is good. That's the perversion. At least with the guy in clockwork orange, he really enjoyed doing bad things and thus could be reformed by making those things repulsive. But those do and claim to like these things even though they already know they are repulsive?

I'm taking a wild guess and thinking dopers. It's a plague around here, and a case like this comes up periodically.

The pictures are obviously of fully formed infants -- not some nondescript clump of cells as the liberals describe them so they can sleep at night.
That's why I think "pro-choice" politicians should have the investigative report forced on them. Make them own the evil of their position.

Sherry, I'm adopted as are my 3 daughters. If getting an abortion had the same requirements as adopting a kid, I suggest abortion numbers would plummet. The state hoops a couple has to jump through are staggering but that's not the worst part. We "finally" got off the waiting list 10 years after first signing up for the privilege of attending 8 weeks of classes to qualify us for approval. the result was our last child because we decided to pursue private adoptions for the first two girls.
The state's complicity extends beyond ignoring what Gosnell did. It also makes easy access to adoption as a viable alternative so odious as to be untenable.

Ok. I was never strongly pro-life, but as I wipe tears from my eyes here at work, I think I just had an epiphany. Holy shit.

This is why I think people who are on the fence should be FORCED to look at these pictures. If you'd like to argue that there is a choice to be made, fine. Make that choice with ALL the information available. SEE what it is you're doing.
I've had very pro-life people look at pictures like that and say "I didn't need to see that."
Yes, the fuck you did. LOOK at what you're advocating. Still want to choose it? Still think it's a blob of tissue?
A woman who was 21 weeks pregnant had in-utero surgery to save the baby. During surgery, the baby grabbed the finger of the doctor and squeezed it. Tell me that's a blob of tissue.

And God did not spare Sodom or Gomorrah.
What then shall become of this land?
Depending on how angry you are on any given day, the answer is either hilarious, terrifying, or a tremendous relief.
Usually all three.

Washington Post online has as its top article right now a piece about new Virginia legislation requiring higher building code standards for abortion clinics. Do you think an article ON THE PRECISE TOPIC OF STANDARDS FOR ABORTION CLINICS might mention Gosnell?
Well, of course not.
This is not just bias. This is journalistic malpractice.

There was an update on Washington Post story, actually from Slate, on the lack of media attention to the monster Gosnell trial.
Washington Post "regrets" not having reporter there. From the update I assume they are now going to fill one of those empty chairs at the trial.
Keep the pressure up. And, once again, many thanks, Ace.
