Media Row at the Gosnell Trial
— Ace

This picture is actually Pulitzer-worthy. The judge in the Gosnell trial set aside some seats for the media, as judges do in high-profile cases.

Silly judge.

Meanwhile, a Washington Post reporter explains why she covers all sorts of national issues but hasn't written a word about this one.

Note that Rush Limbaugh calling Sandra Fluke a dirty word got a lot of coverage by this reporter, but this story is just a "local crime story."

Like Newtown was. But then Newtown had "national ramifications" for legislation... that the media desired. This story also has national ramifications for legislation... that the media does not desire.

Great article at Patheos.

[T]he thing is that IÂ’m getting kind of sick of pointing out egregious bias only to see things not just remain bad but get worse. Just think, in the last year, we saw the media drop any pretense of objectivity and bully the Susan G. Komen Foundation into funding Planned Parenthood. And then we had how many months of coverage focused on someone calling a birth control activist a bad name? And who can forget every pro-life person in the country being asked to respond to Todd AkinÂ’s stupid remarks about rape?

So our abortion-drenched media would certainly want to cover what is arguably the countryÂ’s most horrific serial murder trial of abortion doctor Kermit Gosnell, right? Well, far from the front-page, top of the news, daily update coverage you rightfully would expect, itÂ’s been downplayed. Majorly downplayed.

...

But gosh darn it, can you think of any policy implications to this, uh, “local crime” story? And that’s all it is. Just like a bunch of other local stories the Washington Post also refuses to cover — local crimes such as the killing of Trayvon Martin and the killing of Matthew Shepard and the killing of students at an elementary school in Connecticut. Did the Washington Post even think of covering those local crime stories? No! Oh wait, they did? Like, all the time? Hmm. That’s weird. But did they cover them in terms of policy implications? Asking politicians for their views and such? Oh they did that, too? Hmm. So weird. Oh, and Sarah Kliff [Ms. Just a Local Crime Story -- ace] herself wrote one of those stories? Well, gosh, I’m so confused.

And what policies could possibly be under discussion with this Gosnell trial?

...

Journalists arenÂ’t exactly coming to her defense either. In the words of Andrew Kirell:

Yeahhhh, so IÂ’m pro-choice, but this Gosnell story is awful. And oh boy does it look bad for reporters normally on the health/abortion beat.

I've got one question for the media:

If the jury votes for the death penalty, how are you going to explain to your readers your complete embargo on this story? I imagine at this point you'd have to note that someone had received a capital sentence; at that point, what's your excuse for having not said a word about it?

I've said it on twitter but it bears repeating here.

in 2012, BMJ published an article on "after birth abortion."

It was a miserable piece of crap based on Singer's work.

I saw several news articles about it.

Strangely here it is being lived out in real time on our own shores, (not so theoretical anymore is it?) and suddenly silence.

If they ever let me near a classroom after I finish this degree (they won't, but still) I'm going to make people read what little Gosnell stuff there is right next to the BMJ article and say "Ok, so theory, practice, relationship?  Do you feel sick now?"

6 I imagine at this point you'd have to note that someone had received a capital sentence; at that point, what's your excuse for having not said a word about it?

They probably don't "have to note" a guy getting a death sentence until PA gets ready to carry it out, which won't be an issue for Gosnell because he'll die of natural causes before all the appeals are finished.

Maybe if NARAL or the NCAAP or the "Free Mumia" crowd protests the death sentence, they'll cover that...with no details ("sentence received for the death of a woman.")

Even if they do Radish is right, they'll say it's for the death of the two woman he killed as a result of the procedure (not the 100s of babies.)

Then they'll say "see this is what will happen if abortion becomes illegal, this EVERYWHERE."

Actually I'm surprised they haven't tried that yet.

Holy Shit!  From Slate.com

If you're pro-choice, say, and you worry that the Gosnell story is being promoted only to weaken your cause, you really should read that grand jury report. "DOH could and should have closed down GosnellÂ’s clinic years before," write the investigators. Why wasn't it? Were state regulators nervous about igniting a political fight about abortion? Is the regulatory system incompetent or under-funded? And are there other states where the same could be said? Social conservatives are largely right about the Gosnell story. Maybe it's not a raw political story. It's just the story of a potential mass murderer who operated for decades as government regulators did nothing.

How about the study linked to by Insty yesterday that babies can recognize their mother's voice as soon as they are born? That it means they begin processing and recognizing sounds somewhere around 10 weeks--TEN WEEKS--before they are born.

The last sound those little babies heard was the only sound they could recognize--their own mother's voice screaming in pain.

I want to cry.

When I get depressed and think about events that are destroying our country, especially the events of the last 6 years, and I ask, "Where is God?" It's news like this; when we can't even stand up for the little babies, why would God stand up for us?

I think that's a question Conservatives in the public eye don't ask enough.

We all know that suggestion abortion clinics meet the same health and safety standards as, say, a nail salon is anti-woman (somehow).  But what never happens is that the accused (that is: the person who suggested we hold abortion clinics to such lofty and unatainable standards) never turns around and says, "Please explain that.  Why would holding them to the same standards as a nail salon restrict access.  No, take your time.  I'll wait."

In the three Synoptic Gospels the Crucifixion narrative takes place during the feast of Passover.  In John's Gospel, however, it takes place a week earlier during the time of preparation.  Hence the Crucifixion would've taken place amid the screams of the lambs who were being ritually slaughtered for the Passover.

If there's an upside to this whole disgusting   story, it's that it's beginning to break through, just a bit, into the national scene.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who suspected that  there may be just a bit of gruesomeness  to abortions, but   this would fry their little cocooned psyches. I doubt they could handle  the Truth  About Abortion.

Good.

The whole   country should be very uncomfortable with the  culture of death that we've allowed to happen. Kudos to anyone in the MFM that highlights this House of Real Horrors. I want this to receive the most coverage possible, which at this point, would be any coverage at all.

I think that since this has been going on for over 40 years with the imprimature and approval of our government, that God has had time to consider this.

Consider that our present situation as a nation could be part of His judgement.  It will get worse.  We have asked for this and now we are going to get it, good and hard.

Gosnell himself MAY get the death penalty (is that still on the books in Pennsylvania?) but being his age, he will never be executed.  He will either die in his cell or some sentence will be commuted by some "compassionate" judge as his health starts to fail.

114 For the life of me, I don't grasp why you, and all the conservative bloggers gives a dead rats' left testicle about what the biased old media reports on. Seriously, the public has chosen, and they largely, correctly, discount anything and everything said by these bozos anyway. We should not be offended when they fail to report. We should not be annoyed when they get details so very wrong, which is the norm for them. I've given many interviews over my career, and in all but a handful of cases (where the journalists were in fact market practitioners themselves), the stories generated were substantially more fiction than fact. Long ago, I gave up on them. I've told everyone who wants to interview me that I require a copy of the article far enough in advance before it goes to press so I can correct errors as a condition of the interview. Most 'journalists' decline, and I decline to speak with them. I've had my words (deeds, accomplishments, products, company, ...) attributed to competitors for national media stories. I've had them misconstrue and completely screw the pooch on baseline information, throwing in their own "interpretation" of what was said. Which, unsurprisingly, revealed their blessed incompetence at best, or their proud stupidity at worst. Think "Soledad O'Brien" for the latter ... she is not the sharpest knife in the drawer, and apparently quite proud of it. No Ace, stop being so blown away by the lack of "main stream" coverage. The market has been moving away from them for years, which is why many of them are going out of business. Its folks like you and the team here that are fundamentally doing the yeomans labor of reportage. Yeah, you have a point of view, and you are unabashed about admitting it. And that is good. Your traffic is increasing, your market share is increasing. Stop worrying about the overpaid assholes who are rapidly slipping into irrelevance.

Every single fucking abortion clinic in America will do a late-term abortion--up to and including viability of the child.

Just pay them a little extra and they'll fudge the paper work, that's all.

Because when you are in the business of killing babies for money, only the money matters, not the babe.

They'll even counsel her on how to wear loose fitting clothing and such to hide the progress of pregnancy if she fears anyone will see her when she comes in.

167 FWIW, there are Women's Care Clinics across the street from these abortion mills that do ultrasounds and offer parenting classes, allow young ladies to earn cribs and car seats and baby clothes, and hook them up with all sorts of social services so that they don't have to abort their babies. Any one of you could be volunteering there without even missing a single hour of Game of Thrones.

I do, and I also send my husband out to the 40 Days for Life prayer vigils that tend to send ladies into the Care Clinic rather than the abortuary.

When it comes to being Citizen, I have a "stick to theology" approach to my Church. As far as I can recall just punishment of the sovereign up to and including death, where merited, is not in any way condemned by the NT and certainly not the OT. They usually want to bring up the stoning of the Adulteress. At which point I remind them

1. That was a mob. Not a sentence of a court representing the sovereign delivered after hearing evidence.
2. The sovereign of Israel at that time (Rome) had made stoning illegal.

Conservatives have this silly fantasy that we can keep ignoring the mainstream media and eventually it will no longer sway elections. It's horseshit.

The only solution I see is conservatives buying up traditional media outlets instead of funding the same media outlets with advertising dollars every campaign cycle.

252 Does anyone still wonder where the stimulus money went? Also went to bribe states into adopting the Marx/Prog indoctrination for public schools called "Common Core" education standards. Many states' Governors (including Kasich in OH and Brewer in AZ) took the bribes not having seen the standards. Implementation will require a major increase in per-student fees for proficiency testing as well as purchasing massive amounts of new materials from vendors who are directly tied to the Bill Gates group that developed Common Core (this is illegal, of course, but what the hell does that mean anymore)/ So, the massive expenditures that are coming in order to implement Common Core will mostly be borne by local school districts so the states could get a big cash fix.

279 "The horrible truth that the National Abortion Federation or Planned Parenthood or any other abortion apologist wants to hide is that Kermit Gosnell is not an outlier. Earlier this year, a 29-year-old kindergarten teacher died when 'something went wrong' with an abortion of her unborn child. The woman was reportedly 33 weeks pregnant. And the doctor who performed this abortion, a full two months after the 24-week viability line, was the celebrated — and I do mean celebrated — Dr. Leroy Carhart. Dr. Carhart is the chap who bravely fought both the Nebraska and federal ban on 'so-called' 'partial birth abortion' — you have to use scare quotes you know. Carhart expanded his practice into Maryland a few years back in order to bring his specialty — killing babies well after the point that they could live separate from their mothers — to a larger, more diverse population than his old mid-west practice."

She blocked anything I sent her. And, she voted for him, because she's a Democrat, and she hated Bush with so much venom (because she watches NBC). This round, the entire family came down on her, but only because of illegal aliens invading her home state. She hated Romney because he was a Mormon. She said she didn't vote for Obama, but, honestly, I have no idea who she voted for. I told her a vote for anyone but Romney is a vote for Obama. She really doesn't get it. Only if it affects here directly. Otherwise, she says "they're all lying" if it is something she does not want to hear. It's frustrating. She's completely brainwashed. Old NY Democrat. I know. I read these stories about high school boys getting a girl drunk and gang raping her, and her classmates harass and ridicule her until she kills herself. When I was a kid, I was taught to respect and protect women. To do otherwise was the simply  unmanly. So now, in the age of the metrosexual, and hipness of unmanlyness, girls are used and thrown away. This is what our society has become.

387 The most inexcusable thing about this whole d@mn abortion mess is it is unnecessary.  There are tens of thousands of couples who would love to adopt a newborn of any race or even with health problems.  For example, did you know that the Spina Bifuda folks maintain a list of parents who will adopt a newborn who has spina bifuda?

The dissolution of the family via feminism and political shenanigans (combined with a general societal decline) has led inexorably to this. Generations upon generations now that believe they should not respect an elder, are shocked that people don't respect elders? This isn't true for all of us, but our national political screwups aside, the culture or society itself is fast moving towards the point of having a critical mass of 'superfluity' - of people who by choice make themselves superfluous. I will not blame those who because of the accident of their birth or because they are old cannot hold up the contract, but to those who have taken the slow easy road of decline, when the time comes, what mercy will there be for them?

389 The National Enquirer gets a bad rap, in my view. They love sensationalism, sure--mainly in the form ofcelebrity scandals--but look at their record over the decades. They're the ones that nailed John Edwards, for example. They're the American equivalent of Britain's Fleet Street, but given the failure of their more respectable journalistic brethren to report, you know, the news, I'll take what I can get. That million bucks that the National Enquirer had to pay out to Carol Burnett in 1980(?) got their attention. The NE may be trashy but if they say they have a tape, by God, they have that tape. On an even trashier note, I also find myself missing the now-defunctWeekly World News and sometimes wonder what happened to Bat Boy. I hope he's okay. As an aside, it should be remembered that those who opposed slavery and advocated its prohibition were considered radicals in their day. I always find a bit of wry, frustrated amusement in any statement about how human society is supposed to have "evolved" out of some behavior. People haven't changed one bit since the stone age - technology advances, cultures change, but humans are just the same, for both good and ill.

But those do and claim to like these things even though they already know they are repulsive?

398 I looked. I want to see what the jury is going to see, so if they decide 'not guilty' or someone decides to 'hang' the jury in deadlock I can judge the jury myself. The pictures are obviously of fully formed infants -- not some nondescript clump of cells as the liberals describe them so they can sleep at night. Remember folks, this is Philadelphia, with 100% turnout for Obama in some precincts. That kind of brainwashing and thought control is hard to beat.

400 We have a horrifying case this week in coastal Washington state. A 21 year old couple were in a motel, were the woman gave birth seated on the toilet "because she didn't want to go to the hospital". "They thought the child was dead" and the guy dropped the baby in the toilet where he cut the umbilical cord "and the back of her [baby's] neck." Then he took it across the road, barely into the woods, and covered it with brush. A walker spotted it from the roadway. Guy is charged with 2nd degree murder, woman is charged with 1st degree abandonment of a dependant person.

I'm taking a wild guess and thinking dopers. It's a plague around here, and a case like this comes up periodically.

404 @394

Sherry, I'm adopted as are my 3 daughters. If getting an abortion had the same requirements as adopting a kid, I suggest abortion numbers would plummet. The state hoops a couple has to jump through are staggering but that's not the worst part. We "finally" got off the waiting list 10 years after first signing up for the privilege of attending 8 weeks of classes to qualify us for approval. the result was our last child because we decided to pursue private adoptions for the first two girls.

The state's complicity extends beyond ignoring what Gosnell did. It also makes easy access to adoption as a viable alternative so odious as to be untenable.

This is why I think people who are on the fence should be FORCED to look at these pictures.  If you'd like to argue that there is a choice to be made, fine.  Make that choice with ALL the information available.  SEE what it is you're doing.

I've had very pro-life people look at pictures like that and say "I didn't need to see that."

Yes, the fuck you did.  LOOK at what you're advocating.  Still want to choose it?  Still think it's a blob of tissue?

A woman who was 21 weeks pregnant had in-utero surgery to save the baby.  During surgery, the baby grabbed the finger of the doctor and squeezed it.  Tell me that's a blob of tissue.

Nice hijacking there, too bad its a non sequitur. The media derives its relevancy and power from the great unwashed masses, such as us, believing that they have power, and instilling in them that they have power. It is power by fiat. Don't decry their failings, accept them. Don't waste your time attempting to convince them that they are misguided, simply point it out, and move on. Don't moan over their biases, highlight them. Stop trying hard force against hard force, use soft force against hard force. Control their actions. This is what Drudge does. Does it not work? Do you not see them beat their breast over the power of his simple site? Do you not grasp that Brietbart was doing the same thing? They are irrelevant, silly, and biased. So hold that up to the light, and stop demanding that they change. Get them to embrace their inner Marxist and fascist propagandist selves. And shine a really bright light on them. And, stop shooting the messengers.
