Meet the New Holiday Hijacking, Same as the Old Holiday Hijacking
— Ace

Oh, dude. People will be talking about health insurance. Trust me on that.

Rich Lowry turns to my favorite topic in Politico Magazine: "The Left's Reality Problem."

The left continues to believe that Magic Words will change solid reality. All you need is to get people to Believe -- remember, the Right sabotaged Obamacare by not Believing hard enough -- and that Wish-Magic will change the world.

The “reality-based community” isn’t what it used to be. Progressives spent much of the George W. Bush years deriding the right for disdaining reality itself and waging an associated “war on science,” such was its purported hostility to evidence....

The left happily adopted the appellation “reality-based community.” (You can still find T-shirts and bumper stickers online.) It congratulated itself on its factual rigor and nominated for president a man whose initial appeal was based, in part, on his exquisite sense of nuance. Message: We’re more empirically grounded and intellectually supple than you.

The erstwhile reality-based community is having a tough time of it lately, though. Most infamously, Obamacare is foundering on the flagrant deceptions used to sell it, exposed every day by the workings of the law in reality.

Many liberals still don’t want to acknowledge the rather straightforward fact that if you mandate more insurance benefits in the so-called Affordable Care Act, insurance will cost more. QED. You might be able to cushion the cost increase for some people with subsidies, but not for everyone, and the underlying insurance is still more—not less—expensive.

...

The deceptions around Obamacare are central—both to the law and to the left’s advocacy generally. So much of liberal policy is based on Affordable Care Act-style thinking, which involves hiding and never acknowledging the costs of a given policy; giving legislation a warm and fuzzy name on the assumption that its results will live up to that appellation; and moralistic attacks on people who resist as fools and ogres.

You don't need a god to be religious hysteric; you only need dogma and a devil. And the left is proving that more and more each day.

And just like they think you're greedy if you don't want them to take what you have to use for their purposes, they think you're *so rude* if you don't want to spend your time being berated by them. The South African news site said the outcome of the murder charge against Thamsanqa Jantjie, brought in 2003, was unknown because the court case file is “mysteriously empty.” Many of the other charges against Jantjie, dating back to 1994, were eventually dropped, eNCA reported, because he was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. Jantjie was acquitted in the rape case.

This was a person who had high insurance rates, and was now having to get their insurance through the exchange. He could't get through for a period of time, but he was finally able to apply. Here are the "facts" that the news person presented. He told what the old insurance policy premiums were per month. He told what the new cost to the consumer was per month with the subsidy. He never told what the new insurance premiums were per month without the subsidy, letting ignorant viewers think that the new insurance is cheaper, not pointing out that a good share of the cost is being shouldered by taxpayers.

72 Seeing scientists calling bullshit on the "Secret hidden language discovered in DNA" story. Go Home PR Team, You're Drunk http://www.bacteriatobonobos.com/1/post/2013/12/go-home-pr-team-youre-drunk.html As you scour through the Internet today, you may come across such hyperbolic headlines as “The genetic code has a double meaning” or “Scientists discover double meaning in genetic code”. They convey a certain importance hitherto unknown. Unfortunately not. The double meaning they are referring to relates to the fact that DNA not only encodes proteins (DNA > RNA > Protein), but also contains sections that are used as control sites for this production. That is, other proteins, known as transcription factors, bind to these complimentary regions and can turn genes off and on as well as altering the structure of the protein produced. They are the regulatory regions. Consequently, this “double meaning” is nothing new. We have known about these regulatory elements – such as promoters and enhancers – for decades, although there is still much to learn about their complexity. And the study published today in Science that has given rise to these headlines provides new insights through the regulatory maze. ... So, statements like this one published today are just downright erroneous (italicised words are my emphases. Then I went further and underlined them as well): “The second one [regulatory regions], which was just discovered, codes information which tells the cell how to control genes” Hogwash! Even the finding that these regulatory regions are embedded within protein-coding sequences is nothing new; they have been discovered in several studies since 1995. The main conclusions of this new study by Dr. John Stamatoyannopoulos and his colleagues is that these regions are more pervasively contained within coding-sequences than previously believed – 87% of genes (from the 81 cell types investigated) contained them. (And, perhaps they have coined the term “duons” for these genes – I’m not sure.) Moreover, they found that these regulatory sequences determine the structure of proteins themselves by preferentially choosing some amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) over others. Consequently, if a mutation resulted in the selection of different protein structures, they have the potential to catalyze evolutionary change. Finally, with a large proportion of disease-associated DNA sequences being found within these duons, this study reveals a myriad of insights into the overlooked process of gene regulation within exons. But – the take home message is that – the fundamentals of genetic function remain the same: there are regions that encode proteins and others that control this process. It’s just that “duons” are commonplace and they influence protein structure, evolutionary pathways, and perhaps certain diseases. Rant over.

80 On a quasi-related note, the Texas Legislature passed a law (nicknamed "the Christmas Law") banning bans on Christmas.* So far, there is at least one School District which tried to get away with ignoring the law. They're getting more blow-back than they expected, and a hefty lawsuit (or will if they don't back down). *- yes, you read that right. The law forbids government entities, including cities & school districts, from forbidding Religious sentiments or iconography. Specifically INCLUDING Christian symbols.

81 The ideological left don't believe any part of your life should be free of their insults, lectures, and demands. That's what kind of person we're dealing with. And just like they think you're greedy if you don't want them to take what you have to use for their purposes, they think you're *so rude* if you don't want to spend your time being berated by them. Mental illness doesn't even cover it. "The left continues to believe that Magic Words will change solid reality. All you need is to get people to Believe -- remember, the Right sabotaged Obamacare by not Believing hard enough -- and that Wish-Magic will change the world."

And they denigrate people for having religious beliefs and say that they are pro-science.  Yet they believe in magic.

It's as if their religious impulses, denied a traditional religious outlet, went out and and found another way to be expressed.  Not through worshipping a diety, but worshipping themselves as dieties.

Even a little 'chat' here last night on the topic, between three people I consider conservative -- one businessperson (former, me), one health care professional, and a person in the legal field quickly shifts to a lot of finger-pointing and accusations and shows what an absolute mine-field the topic is. 137 Many liberals still donÂ’t want to acknowledge the rather straightforward fact that if you mandate more insurance benefits in the so-called Affordable Care Act, insurance will cost more. QED. I think their brain supplies them an easy answer at that point. If you squash out the CEO's paycheck, and other assorted corporatey theft, then the cost goes down. The problem is the insurance company's profit margin is an easy EASY calculation. And it ain't as big as they need it to be. Also, the gov't overhead is bigger than the profit margin. But those easy to figure numbers don't enter their minds. They just handwavey it away.

The TL;DR is: University Marketing departments trump up what are in fact, fairly incremental discoveries (if even that.) The media who collectively probably have never even seen a copy of Science much less bother to go read the actual article itself, just cut and paste from the Press Releases, and add an even further layer of "OMG, Look at this!" As a former scientist and current bioethicist, I don't trust scientific reporting farther than I can through a bound copy of last year's PNAS. 180 Magical thinking - stepdaughter has it, big-time. Caught in in a state university from the professors. She left the university infected with white guilt, shame over having money, and a need to atone for being alive. She wished that people of color would all be friendly and forgiving of her sins if she pretended to "be like them". She wished that everyone would always be able to "understand" each other if they just "dialogued." Her magical thinking got her robbed repeatedly. She was an object of mockery, which made her double- down on wish casting. Her criteria for sleeping with someone is that they are not white incidentally, although she "wishes" that they shared some of her few remaining mainstream values. Is this coming off a little strong?

182 Hopefully somebody in the horde or a cob-log can put us some real f'n genetics knowledge.

I'm hardly an expert anymore (I haven't actually done anything in the field in, well, 16 years or so...crap, I'm getting old), the extremely simplified form is that there are DNA sequences where the enzymes for RNA transcription of DNA attach.  There are OTHER bits of DNA that aren't at the actual site of attachment that make it easier (and if I remember correctly) or harder for those enzymes to attach at their designated spots.  I *think* that's what the article was talking about, but I read it pretty quickly, and a few hours ago...

Again, that's oversimplified, and there's complications, but that's the gist...I think.

That can complicate a pregnancy in that it promotes ectopic pregnancy. That particular aspect of Chlamydia does not, by itself, render a woman infertile [since the preggers still took place, see?] but, should the bacteria escape the fallopian tube it does have a chance to infect the body cavity, including the ova, which can indeed kill them. I've actually met women who've been partially paralyzed for a time due to that infection, although it is very rare.
