Meltdown: Reid Summons Senate Democrats For Crisis Meeting on Obamacare
— Ace

Delicious.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) on Thursday will convene a special meeting of the Senate Democratic caucus and senior White Officials to discuss the troubled rollout of ObamaCare.

Reid on Wednesday told reporters he would not answer questions about the hundreds of thousands of insurance policy cancellations or other issues until he has further discussions with the White House.

The Clumsy God continues to fall.

Charles C.W. Cooke tries to answer a question that occurred to Drew today: is this the greatest domestic policy fiasco in all of American history?

This is no partisan overstatement. This is indeed historic. Whether this is the biggest debacle in all of our history or not, it's top three -- and you can argue its place in that list as you like.

Cooke casts about for similar debacles, including Prohibition. But he finds that the last century's greatest domestic fiascos were passed on a bipartisan basis, and thus did not harm one party more than the other.

To find a time in which the central agenda of one party has been as thoroughly discredited as the Democrats’ may be if Obamacare collapses into itself, one probably has to go back to the second decade of the 20th century. As the election of 1920 approached, Americans found that they had grown exhausted and disturbed by the egregious domestic agenda that their president’s utopian internationalism had gradually imposed. Woodrow Wilson’s “war socialism,” which involved stern rationing, crippling censorship, and a thoroughgoing distaste for the individualism that had marked America’s rise, proved to be unpopular enough to render Warren Harding’s promise of a “return to normalcy” as music to voters’ ears. In 1920, Harding won 60 percent of the vote — 37 states to his opponent’s eleven — and he used his mandate to effectively repeal the Wilson era and to discredit the Democratic party for a decade.

How bad is it right now? Obama's weary minions have taken to indulging in fantasy speculation-- how well would Obama be doing now if he hadn't flamed out on Obamacare?

And, Open Thread. Knocking off early tonight.

6 The problem is that no matter what happens - delay or implosion or whatever - Obamacare will still be in effect. And the insurance industry will still be in tatters. Your plans have been cancelled and will no longer be offered as of next January. The ONLY thing that will work is full repeal, and then somehow give incentives to the evil insurance companies to start offering insurance again.

41 is this the greatest domestic policy fiasco in all of American history? Yes. It's certainly one of the most catastrophic failures, unlike gummint programs that take decades to metastasize and do so safely under the cover of bureaucracy. This one is a trainwreck right out of the box and starts the wreckage immediately. The other point that I've made a few times is that this one is undoubtedly one of the most prominent failures of gummint-- it's happening live on the web, touching each and every one of us, and we don't even have the luxury of ignoring it because it's getting shoved down our throats.

49 The GOP in Washington needs to demand Repeal and Replace. Meanwhile they need to get a few red states to announce that Obamacare is null and void in their states via the 10th Amendment and all healthcare laws are rolled back to before the monstrosity. Also, the states will work with insurers to create one year temp health plans to get people who have been cancelled through this mess. The GOP has gotten as much as they can out just sitting on the sidelines. Now is the time to throw a new threat at the Dems. Imagine the chaos of states voiding the law.

Posted by: Mallfly at November 13, 2013 02:10 PM (bJm7W)

60 I'm not sure why, at the direction of congress and the individual States Insurance Divisions the Insurance companies cannot restore for a year all plans cancelled in the last 90 days regardless of insurability and bill the Dirty Lyin Rat Party for harm done by benefits paid for bills incurred and  normally uninsurable illnesses incurred during that three month period!

Posted by: ConcealedKerry or SubMitt at November 13, 2013 02:10 PM (uUXp6)

61 I propose the Republicans offer the "Next time read whats in it" bill. It should be a single 8.5x11 sheet of paper that allows not only for people to keep their old healthcare plans making Obamacare entirely optional. But allowing for the sale of insurance across state lines in accordance to each states legal framework. The insurance companies would have to keep the profits/losses from Obamacare separate.

Now here is the tricky part.Obama set up that slush fund (called risk corridors)  for the insurers to protect them against losses  The government will still be  on the hook for the losses that would eventually pile up as only the sick or high risk people would pay the hugely inflated costs of the insurance. I admit that will suck. BUT it will be a heck of alot easier to cancel the funding for the "risk corridors" later than it would be to repeal the whole thing.

Basically just gut it in two stages.

So, Reid will try to keep everyone on board with 0-care using threats more than likely. And appeals to King Putt's legacy. 69 How much longer will we have these HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities)? There's 106 of them. Most of the $ going to them is from federal and state loans and grants. Is there any justification in 2013 for the govt to spend such huge sums on explicitly racial, and frankly racist, institutions? They performed a valuable service when racist laws prevented blacks from attending normal schools. But now blacks not only aren't discriminated against when applying to normal schools, they get affirmative action. HBCUs should be forced to transition to a normal, non-racist system or, frankly, be closed down. They are an anachronism. And a harmful one.

One thing you have to remember is that for a lot of the long-time Senators and Congressmen, they respect each other above outsiders, especially constituents with no connections (like the Tea Party). It's a club, an they'll help out their "friend across the aisle" because they all go to the same DC parties and fundraisers (and have done so for decades), and probably have other things in commons, such as kids at the same schools, spouses at the same organizations, etc.

81 The only potential silver lining to this fiasco is, when health insurance finally does rise from the ashes, is that it may be less tightly coupled to employment. This would allow (I would hope) for more price transparency for services, and the increased ability for individuals to actually shop around in a less encumbered insurance market.

Having a third party pay for services, without the end user caring about the cost, is a tremendous incentive for price distortion.

Of course, I may just be dreaming.

104 HBCUs are withering on their own, so maybe nature is taking its own course. 35% of blacks in college attended HBCUs in 1976. Latest data I can find is 2006 when it was down to 13%. And of course, the % of blacks attending college grew dramatically from 1976 to 2006. Perhaps they can by taken over by normal, non-racial schools and run the African-American Studies depts or something. I understand the pride attached to their old traditions and valuable service they provided pre-1960s. But it's been 50 years now since the moral justification for HBCUs -- ie legal discrimination against blacks in higher ed -- vanished. The moral basis for their mission has vanished, but the institutions lumber on generations later.

That is, don’t touch the ACA itself—just quarantine it into a smaller and smaller problem.

187 You can not insure everyone with medicare and medicaid. Period. Not enough money. even with your tax raises. The math just doesn't work. The dirty little secret behind Obamacare and that Meidcare expansion is that in the end, it can not be financed. The CBO numbers are as accurate as my lottery predictions. Which is why those Governors who declined the Medicare expansion were actually the smart ones. Because at the end of the day, the feds are not going to be able to pick up 95% of the future costs and the states will be on the hook. So, congratulations to state's like mine, Illinois, for taking a sucker's bet. Of course, we can't do budgets here anyway, so why does this not surprise me. MEDICARE is only for people over 65; Medicaid is for people who don't "make enough money".

Medicaid expansion is baked into the   cake of Obamacare -  that's the bribe that was used to convince the states to sign on to this thing to get it passed.

The only problem is that it came with strings attached - the states HAD to agree to start their own exchanges  AND expand their Medicaid rolls  in order to qualify for that extra money.

Only a handful of states took the bait - they've been burned by the Feds on Medicaid reimbursement enough time to know that they would  eventually get burned again, and then the states would be on the hook for the full amount.

SCOTUS' ruling - as much as I hate that it allowed Obamacare to stay - tied the Feds' hands; they absolutely CANNOT compel  any state to take the extra money, nor can they penalize them for not taking that money.

The Dems are screwed, and they know it.

195 Standing there stating "No Republicans voted for this turkey" does not necessarily get you some votes ------------------------ How about, "We voted against this unprecedented take-over of people's lives..., we did everything we could to explain to the Democrats that they were embarking on a massive expansion of the Federal Government into people's private business. We tried our best to explain the bureaucratic nightmare of a boondoggle that it would become. The Democrat's lust for power and control transcended their concern for the welfare of America and its citizens, and it continues to do so. Only YOU can stop it."

229 Want to know when the fun is really going to start? When all the poor slobs with high deductibles in their Obamacare (NOT ACA) realize they have to pay that deductible before any insurance kicks in.

Say you have a plan with $10,000 deductible (and some are much higher). That means for the first $10,000 of medical care you receive in the calendar year, you have to pay the medical providers $10,000. Granted some insured have very high health care bills due to serious illness, but realistically, how many of us run up health care bills of $833 a month? But until you pay off that nut, you've got no insurance. All cash out of your pockets.

Also fun will be hospitals and doctors demanding that the deductible be paid up front, before any treatment, because they're afraid of getting stiffed.

That means for the first $10,000 of medical care you receive in the calendar year, you have to pay the medical providers $10,000. Is that how it's going to work? That would suck. My private plan has a co-pay for each service, and that's what you pay until you meet the deductible, either personal or gamily, then you don't pay anymore.

Or if he delayed the launch they would be screaming about denying care to the uninsured. No Republican could have escaped the wave of attacks when the reality of the ACA struck. As unhappy as I was that Obama was re-elected (very), this may end up working out for the best in the long run. God does indeed move in mysterious ways.
