Memorial Day: What Can I Do?
— andy

While we've been remembering the true meaning of Memorial Day all weekend here at the HQ, the National Moment of Remembrance is officially at 3pm local time and is quickly approaching for us East coast Morons and Moronettes.

One comment I've seen repeatedly made by folks who don't have personal remembrances of lost loved ones or fellow servicemen is along the lines of "what can I do?"

As someone who's fortunate to have had all of his close relatives who have served return home, I'm in this boat myself.

I think most of the regulars here are highly cognizant of the fact that our freedoms have been paid for with the blood of our servicemen, and even if it's not directed at someone we knew, we hold them and their families in our hearts every day, not just one weekend a year.

But when I think of someone who asked "what can I do" and then set about doing something that really made a difference, I think of Zachary Fisher.

Zachary Fisher, with his brothers Martin and Larry, built a fortune as a real estate developer in New York City. That fortune has since been devoted to a wide variety of philanthropic initiatives, from supporting the New York Police Department to funding charitable projects in Israel. But the Fisher family, and Zachary himself, are best known for their extensive work on behalf of AmericaÂ’s military service members and veterans.

...

Throughout their lives, Zachary and his wife, Elizabeth, had an unusually deep respect for the men and women of the United States military. “It’s a privilege to live in this great country of ours,” Fisher said in an interview late in life. “I owe them.”

Zachary Fisher never served in the military. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, he attempted to enlist in the Marine Corps. He was denied, however, due to a knee injury he sustained while working as a teenager on a construction site. Undeterred, Fisher volunteered his building expertise for civil defense, helping build coastal fortifications along the Atlantic seaboard.

...

Soon after the 1983 bombing of a U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut, the Fishers offered an additional $10,000 to each of the families of fallen service members. Having come to the conclusion that the death benefits given to families of fallen military personnel were too low, the Fishers created the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. Its mission was to supplement the governmentÂ’s benefits, in all future cases, with as much as $25,000 cash. The Fishers continued these efforts for more than two decades, closing the direct-payment program only after the federal government significantly increased the monetary benefits offered to the families of service members killed on active duty.

Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher are perhaps best known for launching the Fisher House Foundation. In 1990, Fisher learned about a service woman who had recently received medical treatment at a military hospital. Her husband, unable to afford a hotel, spent the duration of her hospitalization sleeping in his car. Fisher was shocked to learn that the military made no provision for the families of hospitalized veterans and service members—and he decided to do something about it.

Read the whole thing for an inspiring story of the difference one person can make in the lives of our military families, to whom we so much.

And if you're so inclined, please feel free to make a donation to the Fisher House Foundation.

1 Apparently John McCain's decided to honor our vets and show his maverickiness by acting like Jimmy Carter.

Meeting with known rebel fighters is illegal whether Democrat or Republican.

Senators aren't supposed to be making back room deals and incidentally representing the US with rebel fighters.

Frankly, rebel or State, the Syrians can all go jump for all I care about them.

9 Great charity. One of the few I trust. Also, we may have some new people to thank as Americans. Apparently passengers wrestled a man to the floor after he tried to open a door mid-flight on Alaska Airlines. Plane landed, suspect in custody. Named Herrera, so not necessarily of the usual flavor, but he reportedly made "unusual statements" before being taken down. If he was saying "Allah Akbar", that can't be called unusual anymore, can it? I think it's a rule.

It's a shame that a star veteran like McCain has lowered himself to the point of shame.   But he insists upon himself.

He's no better than Baraka now.

I disagree.  Politicians who make the  sacrifices of our fallen moot because of their need for self-aggrandizement  need to be ridiculed, especially on the day we memoralize  the soldiers who made that  supreme sacrifice.

AQ is our enemy.  It has killed so many of our fellow  Americans  and soldiers.  And McCain wants to help them?  How easily we forget.

42 Let me second "Soldier's Angels". A very good friend who has a blog "Villainous Company" has been, along with her other close friends, been very involved with this. Great people, doing great work for wounded veterans returning from Afghanistan and Iraq. From the first stop in Germany for some, all the way home. The Valour IT program to get laptops to Wounded Warriors allowing them to keep in contact with friends and family by e-mail (frequently voice activated software for some severly wounded). These are great people doing great work. God bless them and God bless our men still serving beyond our shores today. What else? Today I visited my parents' graves, with flags for both my father and maternal grandfather, buried side by side, veterans of two different World Wars. My uncle had already been there, and left flags for both (he has been doing this for years), so I did leave my two flags at the markers for two other veterans buried near by, that they shall not be forgotten

At our local Memorial Day service today..., no politicians spoke, none were invited to speak. Only Vets from WWII, Korea, and VN. It was a good service, and was devoted to those killed, but one of the guys read the now well-known commentary:
"It is the VETERAN, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer,
who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, not the politician,
Who has given us the right to vote.

It is the VETERAN,
who salutes the Flag,

55 This is no longer America, The military is no longer fighting for the people who fought for them. For true outrage read Fox News story re: seriously wounded veterans denied any VA benefits, including medical, by being unceremoniously made to choose between a court martial or an Article 10 (voluntary detach). Sounds like the traitor in chief and his henchmen at the Pentagon have figured out how to dismiss that backlog just a bit. They charge these men, most of whom suffer from PTSD or traumatic brain injury, with military misconduct which somehow happens to up by 66%. Does it seem just bit unfair that That Filthy Muzzie Murderer Nidal Hassan collects near $300k while waiting for trial while these true heroes gave their bodies and brains only to be fukt out of any benefits whatsoever?
