Merkel Wins Huge on Basis of Low Unemployment and Almost-Elminiated Deficit
— Ace

And Don't Forget! Dave's NFL thread is below, with boobies. And Oregon Muse's book thread and Andy's gun thread. A feller could have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with those things.

...

Wait a minute -- I was told by Paul Krugman, Barack Obama, and the media that you have to spend, spend, spend to reduce the unemployment rate.

And yet in America, where we spent, spent, spent, the unemployment rate is distressingly high (and has forced millions out of the job market altogether), but in Germany, where they've pursued an Awful Austerity (ick!) program, they have low unemployment.

“It’s an Election Day like we haven’t seen for years,” Armin Laschet, deputy chairman of Merkel’s CDU, said on ARD television. “The FDP may still make it, but first of all it’s an endorsement of Angela Merkel’s policies.”

With unemployment near a two-decade low and the budget deficit virtually eliminated, voters backed MerkelÂ’s handling of the domestic economy, EuropeÂ’s largest, and her push for austerity in the euro zone in exchange for aid.

While the Christian Democratic Union romped, they did so at the expense of their ally, the Free Democrats, who might not even get enough of the votes to have any seats in the Bundeswhatever at all.

Which, alas, means that Merkel might have to strike a deal with the Socialists.

The Greens, the SPDÂ’s favoured partner, took 8 percent, and the anti-capitalist Left Party got 8.5 percent. The anti-euro Alternative for Germany got 4.8 percent, according to the television projections as of 6:20 p.m.

The projections showed MerkelÂ’s party just three or four seats short of an absolute majority. She may still be forced into a grand coalition with her Social Democratic rivals.

I hate linking Politico but: The Greens may have been punished for "Veggie Day."

In what could be a cautionary tale for First Lady Michelle Obama's efforts to tweak Americans' diets, Germans look set to punish the Green Party for urging that public cafeterias go meat-free on a designated "Veggie Day" each week in order to help the environment and reduce cruelty to animals. Borrowing colorfully from English, German newspaper Bild described public reaction to the idea as a "shitstorm."

At her party's final campaign rally on Saturday, Merkel joined in, slamming the Green proposal.

"You will never hear from the Christian Democratic Union party when you should eat meat and when you shouldn't," Merkel said to loud applause from her supporters and campaign workers in the Tempodrom theater.

...

It was in many ways an easy shot for Merkel to take, but her resistance to "Veggie Day" seemed to involve more than just needling an opposition party over a perceived misstep. Having spent 45 years under Communist rule, she appeared to chafe at the state intruding into decisions as personal as what food to ingest.

Merkel noted that she herself skips meat on Friday, but that she'd be damned if she'd make that a government policy.

I haven't been this excited about Strong German Leadership since Hitler!

I mean, since Helmutt Kohl or whoever. I meant Helmutt. Auto-correct and all.

The left is going to keep pushing this notion as the State as paterfamilias...

Roman law and tradition (mos maiorum) established the power of the pater familias within the community of his own extended familia. He held legal privilege over the property of the familia, and varying levels of authority over his dependents: these included his wife and children, certain other relatives through blood or adoption, clients, freedmen and slaves. The same mos maiorum moderated his authority and determined his responsibilities to his own familia and to the broader community. He had a duty to father and raise healthy children as future citizens of Rome, to maintain the moral propriety and well-being of his household, to honour his clan and ancestral gods and to dutifully participate—and if possible, serve—in Rome's political, religious and social life. In effect, the pater familias was expected to be a good citizen. In theory at least, he held powers of life and death over every member of his extended familia through ancient right but in practice, the extreme form of this right was seldom exercised. It was eventually limited by law.

I don't know why it's required to explain, at this late date, why this conception of the State is primitive, backwards, and hateful of freedom and human dignity, but apparently it is so required.

8 US unemployment is high (>20%) primarily due to two things. (1)  The ever increasing number of choking regulations issued under the Obamanite Dictatorship and (2) the uncertainties cause by Obamacare which is a form of regulation but requires its own category.

FDR proved that tax and spend will not improve the economy.  Indeed, it will take a recession and turn it into a depression.

32 One sour note for the Germans is encapsulated in this bit I read about their energy policy. With their big push for renewables, their electric rates have necessarily skyrocketed. (and as a side note, they are currently in the process of building 20 coal fired power plants lolololol)

Some old pensioner was being interviewed for an article, and he described how he cannot afford to use his living room, so he spends his time in the kitchen, with a 5 watt bulb for lighting. If he really needs to light up the room to see something, he turns on his 25 watt fluorescent light.

But he can't use that 25 watter very often; he's already had his power turned off for inability to pay his electric bill in the recent past.

I consider leaving 25 watt bulbs on in my house a rounding error in my bill.

None of them had the wisdom or balls to address the governments need to spend and bestow entitlements on the population, yet they're the pragmatists. They're the one that believe we can keep spending a dollar for every 60 cents the government takes in and yet Ted Cruz is the one not being realistic.

46 You can always argue all day about Rome. When Augustus became Princeps ("First Citizen"), the paterfamilias system faded away. He was a great moralist, of course -- required everyone to be married -- but he codified the parts of family common law that he liked into Senate proclamations, and the rest of it became, well, the Mafia.

We've kicked around the notion of Imperial Presidency since LBJ (The Kennedys were immune to it, being Gracchi). So, the State is not paterfamilias. Obama is Princeps. Unless, you know, the Romans couldn't do both at the same time, but we can.

Roman family traditions can be a little confusing to us, because each family's influence interacted within its clan and tribe. When you went to the voting pens, you voted by tribe. And we'll get to that, too, probably. But not in a way you'll like.

So now, Germany is buying nuclear generated power from France and Czechoslovakia..., until the coal plants are built. So, nuke = OK if it is purchased. While you can draw some a small amount of welfare as a single guy after unemployment runs out as a single guy, most people can't draw anything meaningful unless they have a house full of kids.

So there should not be a large amount of welfare drawing people out there unless there is fraud involved.   And that is where the SSDI comes in.

109 19 Merkel: The Anti-Obama. Posted by: WalrusRex In European terms, Merkel is pretty "conservative" compared to most other politicians there. True. But in American terms, she'd be seen as pretty squishy and RINO-ish. She's in favor of the single-payer (i.e. socialized) health care system they have in Germany. She amped up the insanely lavish welfare benefits offered to basically everyone in the nation. She allows the green-energy/global-warming boondoggle to limp along unchallenged. She allows very high taxes (high in an American scale). ...etc. Mostly these kind of policies are do-able and not seen as noxious in Germany because it's much more of a "mono-culture" in which most everyone is the same ethnicity, has the same cultural values and work ethic, and feels soul-bonded with everyone else in the country. So there isn't much opposition to shared health care/retirement/welfare costs/benefits -- as if they were all one big family. Needless to say, in a nation like the USA, whatever unity we feel as compatriots is riven to shreds by huge divisions and differences re: political views, ancestry, religion, cultural values, regional quirks, ethnicity, age, you name it. So we don't really feel like one big family -- we feel like random occupants of a lifeboat on the high seas who only agree to get along because we have no other choice to survive. Anyway, back to Germany: Aside from some squishiness, Merkel is almost as conservative as you can get in Europe, and her crushing victory over the left -- in the homeland of Marx, no less -- should send a bolt of fear through the American progressives. Combine that with today's history-making low poll numbers for Hollande in France, and the Left is in retreat this week.

Carter graduated 59th out of 820 midshipmen at the Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree with an unspecified major, as was the custom at the academy at that time. 126 I am the original neighbor/poster quoted in this article. The article quotes verbatim two posts I recently wrote on the Del Ray Parents List server, which serve as the foundational basis of the article. These direct quotes used in the article were made without my consent, without attribution, and without any advance notice to me or the moderator of the Yahoo Groups Delray Parents List Server, and the writer attacked a question I posed on the list server, and subsequent information I shared from an authoritative source (the American Association of Pediatrics). In addition to my shock at being quoted directly without my consent, I was surprised to see how the author's article misconstrues my comments and the intent of my posts. As background, I was concerned when three young boys (who appeared maybe 8-9 years old, perhaps 10 at most) showed up at my door, toting rickety lawn mowers, wearing only flip flops and shorts, with no parent in sight. I was concerned for these childrens' safety, and had no intent to quash their "entrepreneurial spirit." To compare my concern over a child's unsupervised use of dangerous lawn equipment to "shutting down a lemonade stand" is ridiculous and out of context. A lemonade stand cannot injure, maim, or wound a child. And, apparently, the American Academy of Pediatrics agrees. Moreover, our neighborhood - while having a wonderful sense of community - is nonetheless an urban suburb of Washington, DC, where violent crimes are not unheard of. In the last couple of months there have been widely reported instances of armed robberies, burglaries, and car break-ins, including during daytime hours. I was concerned that these children did not have parents with them, and simply sought out the resource of our neighborhood list serve to get the pulse of what was appropriate in the neighborhood. It is worth mentioning that the author's use of the content and posts of the Del Ray list server, without my prior consent or permission, are in direct violation of paragraph 11 of the Yahoo Group Guidelines / Terms and Conditions, which specifically state that "[y]ou cannot re-post or re-transmit content that belongs to another user without the user's permission."I also question the propriety of the author's use of a neighborhood list server focused on parenting, which is intended for neighborhood parents to share resources, questions, and information, as fodder for political commentary.ickl, I am reposting without comment a comment left at the article you linked to. 133 CA probably pays as much or more in food stamps as any State in the union.  The maximum "income" is about $48K a year, you have to have 8 people in your home for that. That is as high as their chart goes. (and it the same for SC so I assume this is controlled by the feds.)

For the maximum "allotment" the fed chart goes to $1200 per month for a family of 7.  However, you must take what ever your monthly income is and multiply it by 3 and subtract than from the "allotment".

So a family of 8 with an income of $48K would subtract $1200 from their allotment to result in drawing $0/month in food stamps.

143 Schickelgruber was a Catholic - ultramontaine is the technical term - until he cooked up the notion of the Beer Hall Putsch. Around then he gave up on religion except as a tool to his will. Various pagans joined his movement, and Schickelgruber smiled on them to the degree that the pagans were shouting "Heil Hitler" his way.

148 If the Nazis had won they would have created some Islam-style religion around Hitler. That appears to be what actually happened with Islam. Muhammad was a murderously insane warlord and very successful. To cement the gains they created a religion around him. The followers of Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great should have done that. Instead their empires crumbled after their deaths. Creating a religion after the conqueror is a fairly genius move.

150 German National Socialism ran the gamut of theisms.  The Thulians and Ostara were one branch that seemed to dominate the lives of Himmler and to an extent Adolph.  Adolph was even portrayed at one point as a Wagnarian Grail Knight like Parsifal.  The Germans in fact replaced their Kaiser with another strong man ein Fuhrer.

178 From Wiki: During the course of April 29, 1945, Hitler learned of the death of his ally Benito Mussolini who had been executed by Italian partisans. This, along with the fact the Soviet Army was closing in on his location, led Hitler to strengthen his resolve not to allow himself or his wife to be captured. That afternoon, Hitler expressed doubts about the cyanide capsules he had received through Heinrich Himmler's SS.[24] To verify the capsules' potency, Hitler ordered Dr. Werner Haase to test them on his dog Blondi, and the dog died as a result.[25] Hitler became completely inconsolable.

193  I think I read somewhere a couple of months ago that the Germans had finally paid off their entire debt for WW1 and that they now had WW2 debt.  I'm guessing they want to get that out of the way so they chose her.  I don't like her but I don't live there and they like her, she's their choice.

Today our new Polish monsignor pastor yelled at everyone in church for being late and he read a quote from a european visitor about the thing he admired most here in the USA.  Apparently it was our garbage cans as we throw out enough food to feed all the children in a european nation.  I guess the fact that there are fewer and fewer folks at his mass isn't a hint that he's not approaching the people who are there, who are attending, in a correct and decent manner.  Funny after we left one of my friends said "sounded like the gestapo" and another friend, a PHD in history said "well listen to the accent, he just came from Europe, look at his age, he could have been gestapo".  Pretty soon he'll have frightened everyone in the parish away and he'll be left alone with his giant church building.  We're almost wondering if that is his task and then to close the church for good.  I wonder if this is coming form Pope |Francis?  Funny we have new parts for the mass, they changed a lot of the words and are singing/chanting more stuff.  The public words before you take the host are:  "Lord, I am not worthy for you to enter under my roof, but say only the word and my soul shall be healed"  They change them from:  ""Lord I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed".

Knew the parish has had enough when everyone loudly said the old way and discarded the new way, sort of like on cue.  I can see the Catholic Church is going to have a fight with Catholics that they don't realize is coming.

224 CBD et al.  pg 152 Ch. 15 Making an Obedient Mass.  The Nazis and the Occult.

"Since life has been irremediably spoiled for the believer, he has relatively little hesitation about spoiling it for others. This gives him an advantage. He can be unscrupulous under the disguise of idealism. His self-righteousness permits him to convince himself that he is destroying people for their own good. Josef Goebbels felt it his duty to unleash volcanic passions, outbreaks of rage, to set masses of people on the march, to organize hatred and despair with ice-cold calculation."

Eric Hoffer in The True Believer which is quoted in Sklar's book has this to say - "It seems that when we are oppressed by the knowledge of our worthlessness we do not see ourselves as lower than some and higher than others, but as lower than the lowest of mankind. We hate then the whole world, and we would pour our wrath upon the whole of creation."

"This is what gives the believer the air of a one-dimensional man. He lacks depth. There is a limited range of possibilities open to him. If one wants, therefore, to convert him back to an autonomous human being, one finds that there is nobody at home. His mind is shut tight against new ideas. The slogans and ready-made judgements he has absorbed stretch forward into infinity. The believer is protected for all time. Within his sacred circle, all other knowledge is taboo. One might say that the most telltale sign of a believer is his refusal to examine ideas other than the divine commandments which have been implanted in him. One can't get to him because he will not and cannot engage in dialogue. What is particularly maddening about him is that, sterile and unimaginative, he masquerades as an exemplary man, an objective guide eager to spread enlightenment."

There are numerous nuke plants built near coal plants.  What you have to do though is have a rigorous sampling program that shows that any radiation found at the coal plant is naturally occurring Uranium type decay products and you have to make sure that no water is transferred back and forth between the plants.

251 Himmler was really the one high level nazi that was fascinated by the neo-pagan thing. It was part of the cult of Germanism that Himmler was trying to build. Hitler made fun of him for it, saying that he wasn't going to discover a secret German high civilization buried in antiquity, but a German people who were living shoeless in mud huts at a time when the Mediterranean Empires were writing philosophy. Also, the whole super-Aryan selective breeding program was Himmler's. Hitler also mad fun of him for that, saying that Himmler was "playing at sandcastles" again. Hitler had a way of doing that -- undermining his subordinates. Even Goerring, I think, who was the vain one who liked the fancy uniforms. Hitler once, in front of the whole inner circle, fashioned a medal out of cardboard or paper or something, and offered it to Goerring to add to the hardware he had on his chest.

They get to feeling all familial, and after that it's only class warfare. "A Certain Party" had to more-or-less gin up an Other among the Germans for them to hate, just to get them to all Pull Together. Loyal German Jews couldn't believe it as they were watching it happen.

I doubt England could have gone socialist if they hadn't lost the comforting threat of the Scots and the Irish to give them an edge. No, those neighbors of yours who you don't care for are our best guarantee against becoming Ein Volk.

Most people just walk away when the radon test is positive though. A lot of times, it's because people have an old well pump in the house bringing up air and water from a couple hundred feet down into a galvanized tank. My old system used to piss air for a couple minutes on every cycle. Now I have a newer bladder tank and I never ever hear it vent air. Cost about five hundred bucks or so. Cheaper then the 'remediation' stuff. The newer bladder tanks cut cycles down tremendously, which saves a shitload on electric costs to run. I was a skeptic at first, but my electric bill turned me into a believer.

Not really, I'd say South America is pretty much 100% brown and it's just different types of Marxist leaders.

Democratic socialism took hold in many places in Europe after WWII, but they also started moving back towards free-market capitalism in the 1980s once they saw the failures.

Now most countries in Europe and Canada are center-right.  The US seems to be going Left, and I believe it has everything to do with demographics.

If we had the same demographics we did in 1984, Romney would have won a Reagan-like landslide as whites voted for him in nearly the same exact numbers.

Sorry, I don't think you're going to convince many 3rd world immigrants to vote conservative.

294 Well, it's not that simple ... I consider myself a libertarian and Merkel moved the christian democtrats strongly to the left ... almost no deficit? Well, they have record tax revenues and still keep making depths promising things the social democrats promised some years ago - they even put minimum wages up in some branches, something that seemed utterly impossible for a conservativ party - but she was smart because Germans are very prone to socialism - and they are kept that way by a strongly leftist state television that is financed by a forced fee - from this year on you cant even avoid it, even if you have no tv at all ... And all the editors in state tv are leaning left with only 9% voters for Merkel (at least these are numbers from 2005 and 200 .
I wish she was a anti-Obama - she is not. And she said saving the Euro (meaning keep bailing out Greece etc.) is "without any alternative" - plus she got rid of nuclear power and is pushing "renewable" ... Really, don't take her as a role-model.

296 Much of Merkel's landslide comes from the fact she's a female and females usually lean to the Left.  Once you overcome this, it's a game-changer.

Conservatives in the US have got to find ways of appealing to female voters, that's the lowest hanging fruit, especially white suburban females.  That's a much easier voter to appeal to than illegal immigrants or inner-city blacks.

Drop some of the SoCon nuttery, and I think you'd see a lot more Merkel type victories for the GOP.

Posted by: Jeepers at September 22, 2013 01:39 PM (XDRsa)

297 Conservatives in the US have got to find ways of appealing to female voters, that's the lowest hanging fruit, especially white suburban females.

This!  My God, a thousand times, this!

This is the reason for the "binders" thing and the "War on Women."  Even though they're both patently stupid PR stunts, THEY WORK on their target audience -- middle- and upper-middle college-educated suburban and urban white women.

Women listen to other women, and women in the media industry are overwhelmingly East Coast Lefties if not outright Commies.  That's who controls the white middle and upper-middle female vote, because they are HUGE media consumers.  They are also the biggest market (by dollar amount) for most discretionary spending, which is why marketers study them so intently.

This voting bloc is also the reason why the Left has gotten so much traction out of abortion as a wedge issue -- abortion ensures that the post-1970s, college-educated female vote is a solid Democrat voting bloc.  These women have been the target of nonstop propaganda for decades about the need for upwardly mobile white women (like themselves) to have unfettered access to abortion clinics, since the alternative is Enslavement to the Patriarchy through a career-ending case of unplanned motherhood.

This nightmare scenario frightens the white, college-educated suburban female (even the ones who are past the age of worrying about unplanned pregnancies), far more than such unplanned pregnancies or abortions occur among them in practice.  (Most abortions are low-income, uneducated women who either don't vote or are irretrievably Democrat members of the Free Shit Army, and can be written off politically as potential votes for conservatives.)

That the white middle and upper-middle class college-educated female voting bloc is also uniquely uninterested in taxes and fiscal policy.  Numbers tend to cause their eyes to glaze over.  They consistently rank economic issues as lower on their list of concerns, below the social (window-dressing) issues, even as the Democrats and RINOs rob us all blind.

298 In a parliamentary system, Merkel did not win a "landslide victory".  If the results turn out as projected, her governing coalition (formed with the FDP) lost just enough ground to deny her a governing majority, because the FDP declined enough to drop below 5% and be shut out of the Bundestag entirely.

If the results turn out as currently projected and she is just one or two seats short of a majority, she may well have to try to form a "grand coalition" with her primary opponents, the SPD, which actually represents progress for the left.

Interestingly enough, this is the exact opposite of what happens in the USA, where siphoning votes off to the libertarians sometimes prevents the Republicans from picking up a strategically important position.  Different electoral systems generate different results from pretty much the same voting patterns.

299 Merkel winning like that is nice, especially considering what the alternatives could have been. But I think the fact that the FDP didn't even make it into this session of the Bundestag is big news--they've been there throughout the postwar period, sometimes with as high as 10%+ of the seats in parliament. And now... gone! I find that a little shocking.

Another interesting tidbit that the coalition calculator at the Frankfurter Allgeimeine newspaper shows is that a coalition of "Everybody But the CDU", i.e. Die Linke, Gruene, and SPD, would have a majority of two seats. Now that would be wacky--the biggest winner of the election becoming the opposition! Unfortunately not totally impossible...

304 Reid admires Cruz, but admits Reid's inability to learn anything, new or old. Education is a waste of time. Discussion is a waste of time. Pass the turd! We're constipated and must pass the turd. We have a mindset to pass the turd. STFU and pass the turd. Reid is the new anarchy: Alinksy OWNS the labels.
