23 Any suggestions of things to start as "our traditions?" If someone else suggests them, they're not really your traditions. Most of ours revolve around pre-Christmas stuff (the kids helping decorate the tree, etc.). The main one we have for the kids on Xmas day is that Santa brings their Michigan presents. Except he won't this year, because Grampa forgot to put them out where Santa could get to them- so the USPS will have to deliver them on Friday.

If you have a camera with a tripod/timer or a guest/neighbor, take a picture of the three of you.  Repeat every Christmas, adding family members as necessary. 

It's a pain in the butt, but my parents have been doing this for several decades and it's quite impressive to line them all up for the grandkids to laugh at our hair.

A long-time girlfriend when I lived in Phoenix in the 80s used to make tamales once in a while. They were awesome and although I wish I had learned to make them, they are very time consuming so I probably wouldn't do it anyway.

Yep, I like the  idea of just doing something you can repeat year after year.  It doesn't have to be a grand gesture, just something that will add meaning to it each time. 

 

Pictures are  great.  Decorating together, certain readings (biblical or otherwise), music playing... even tv/movies, but I tend to stay away from that.

69 This is the 1st Christmas in over 40 years that we have no kids down for the Holidays.  Everyone is traveling with their families this year.  We have designated New Year's Eve as Dinner and Presents Day.  As she had a child already when we met, this will be the first time we have celebrated the holidays as just the two of us.

My wife is unhappy about it.  Very.  She likes having the kids down.

I feel strangely calm and relaxed.  Church tonight.  Our presents tomorrow.  No arguments with moonbats.  Dinner, presents, arguments, and families in a week.

Pretty sweet.

86 Eh, Well horde, got my quote. Their complete reline is half of the other quote. ($1500) The spray liner is about 2/3rds of that. ($1050.) They also say my chimney is too short, since it doesn't come above the roof line. That was brought up during the inspection actually, all the chimneys on the 2 story houses around here are like that for some reason. (The chinmney guy seemed to think that's not true, but in fairness, if you stand on my roof and look around the two story houses in plane sight don't actually have chimneys, but up the road is one with the same problem.) That's more of a challenge though to get rip roaring fires, not a safety issue.

IIRC, chimney heights are usually subject to code requirements.  From what I gathered when I was installing my wood stove, the problem with a short chimney is that hot (as in burning red hot) ashes can exit the chimney and land on your roof thus potentially causing a roof fire.  A higher stack lessens the probability of this.  If you plan to resell your house, check in with the local building inspector (using a nom de plume).

And the nativity scene was lovely and the information about the P.O.W camp was more interesting; the Geneva Conventions allow for the rank and file to be allowed to work and keep some of the money for themselves to spend at the canteen.  Most of the prisoners weren't Nazis at all, and loved to get out to work on farms; and many of them spent their funds on art supplies at the canteens and left paintings and poems and things now on display at the museum, with 1990s-2000s pictures of their wives and families.

And a surprising number of them emigrated to the U.S. after they were released, because they were treated so well here, although maybe not so surprising when you realized their hometowns were in the Russian-occupied zones.

And to the museum, and it's your typical small-town storefront operation, but the guy at the front desk had researched most of the "local people who served in WWII" stories himself and was very enthusiastic (pumped my Deutschfreund for some geographical information; there was a Stalag that housed American POWs not far from where he lives).

The cost to extend it is not exactly inexpensive, and if we don't rebrick it, it'll probably look weird. The house was built in 1965, lots of things in it are grandfathered into the code. If the little one is a little too little to comprehend, do it anyway: it's never too soon to start a good habit, and the child will remember the sound of your voice and the love it expresses, even if the sense comes only later.

Then, when you've read the little one to sleep, you and your spouse can have a hot toddy and snuggle. No better way to spent a wintry December night.

142 71 So, this is the first Christmas the Mrs. and I have had with a little one in tow, as well as the first one off on our own from my family's traditions. Any suggestions of things to start as "our traditions?" We always do a beautiful sit down meal Christmas Eve, tradutional foods of my moms heritage, same one every year. If my mom dies before I learn to make it myself I will be devastated; I help out every year, keep getting a little better at it. Then we do a sort of music and spoken word thing of the nativity story, which is really just an excuse to sing all our fave Christmas songs. When I was a kid we got to open one present, my parents chose, before going to bed. Next day is more relaxed, regular breakfast food and just hang in pajamas as long as we can. I'm sure you'll come up with something great, perfect for your family. Don't sweat it and God bless!

It's also important to note that Asians who do well are still discriminated against by proxy of there being other Asians, not necessarily of the same country/area, who aren't doing well.

Several fast-food places in my area have "closed for renovations" in the last year. When the opened up, they all had the same employees as when they closed. There was never any question of "will I get my job back..." Which tells me that, yes, they were fired for striking. It is probably ALSO true that the location was going to close due to declining sales, but they probably took the opportunity to fire the ingrates. Also, I wonder how much of "declining sales" was due to having the kind of employees who believe that a) they are owed a job and b) that that job should pay them 30k/yr for slinging a sub?

Well, one of my Grandmas would take yarn and make balls about softball size, soak `em in kerosene for about 2 weeks, when the sun went down, light `em up and play catch. Served as part of the entertainment when she was young. Christmas fun with singed hair.

So calm, so peaceful. No worries about folks traveling.

We have two services tonight with a party in between. Tomorrow we'll have a lovely little rib-roast for dinner, and sage gnocchi.

I almost feel badly about enjoying this so much without the kids.
