I get automated robo calls every single day on my no call list cell phone asking me if I want to lower the interest rate on my credit card.  I have not had a balance in many many years so it kind of does not apply.

 

I usually respond to where I get a live body and then mess with them for as long as I can.  I have had them on the phone for 20+ minutes in the past.  Would pay money if someone could tell me how to get back at these a-holes.

20 I just switched to nvidia after using AMD video drivers for at least 15 years. They used to be the best for 2D stuff - the hell with games. They started screwing up the catalyst control panel, and then my card wouldn't run on win 7 with the acceleration for Photoshop (drivers). Switch to 8 no improvement. The nvidia is simpler and just works. Installing on 8 took no intervention on my part - found everything it needed.

My rant was with xBox Live, I had a credit card stolen, forgot to change my auto pay for xBox Live and when they went to charge the next year the payment was denied, and they notified me of this. And then I was trapped in an endless loop of not being able to change my payment until I had paid but not being able to pay since the credit card was canceled. However, eventually a very nice online chat with someone from xBox Live fixed the whole thing. So I guess my rant isn't so ranty after all.

The WHQL drivers you get from Windows Update are functional but again frequently obsolete if performance, especially in games and creative apps, is an issue. Because of the cause and time involved in getting a driver certified the companies only update their WHQL item at most three times a year. This isn't an issue for most types of devices but turnover for video drivers can be very rapid.

See if the BIOS settings have something to tweak up the memory timing characteristics.  Sometimes the defaults or "optimal" settings are too aggressive for a marginal memory module and you'll get farkeling.

A less aggressive setting may allow a marginal module to start functioning OK again.

41 Regardless of OS (Windows versions) I like to run Driver Reviver to update to the latest versions of everything on my own or my customer's systems. This is especially useful for bus drivers, video cards and such, it can really fine tune the access time of the entire machine. Windows update just doesn't cut it when it comes to providing current driver support. You can run the software in trial version to see what needs updating before purchasing or if you are really resourceful you can find a full version on iratepay aybay...

Pretty much they all do.  The thing is that the drivers are updated at a fairly regular pace to help improve performance so your disk with drivers on it is going to eventually have out of date drivers on it, and may already be behind when you get it.

Computers are like cars, in that they used to make them so the reasonably intelligent user could open them up and see a problem, then fix it themselves. 

 

I don't know from tech geekery in general, but I used to know what processes were running on my machine, taking up memory, and why.  I used to know what was in my registry, and know what could be safely removed. 

 

I used to have desktop machines that ran on 256 or 512 MB of memory, and whirled through whatever I needed them to, and now I have a machine with 2GB of real memory, and whatever amount of "virtual memory" it has, and just opening my email and running my browser at the same time taxes its resources.

 

What the F?  I'm not an idiot, why is my machine designed to treat me as if I'm not allowed to really understand what it's doing all the time?? 

 

No wonder people act like a-holes on the internet.  Our machines breed us that way.

The problem is they often break stuff doing that.  To get something that works you often need a wide selection of prior drivers.  Video drivers are godawful complicated beasts, highly accelerated ones with all the bling are essentially untestable.  The test "suites" really just sample likely paths.  Exhaustive testing is a thing of the past

Similar to me.  I have a personally built computer, but I used an Asus motherboard and an Asus videocard with the nvidia chipset.  Runs very well and handles high graphics settings on the games I have wonderfully.

I had to replace the   500G hard drive on this here  laptop. I backed up the OS when I first got  it.  Dell had no direct replacement, so I had to get a smaller  HD, backup wouldn't recognize the different sized drive.   Fortunately, a few emails to Dell resulted in me getting a Win7 install disk  for free.

 

Now  the fun begins: trying to upgrade  all the drivers to match the  BIOS upgrade. I have a high-end sound card, and the drivers are specific to the BIOS. Dell has a page where  I can download all the  latest drivers,  which I did, but I couldn't find the control panel  (for EQ and headphone settings)   for the sound card. It used to be in the Start/Programs area. They had moved it. 

 

The sound card control panel   software  was hidden in plain sight in Control Panel,  with nothing telling you to look there  instead of where it once was.

I've got some of that coming up. Somebody went on a shopping spree with my Toys R Us Mastercard. (Hey, the kickback pays for much of my gaming expenses.) They might have gotten to the point where they took delivery on something if they'd stuck to small businesses. But they tried to buy something for about $600 at Wal-mart and the use of my card with a new account with a different address from mine flagged the transaction and caused Wal-mart to call me to verify what was happening.

Sure enough, when I checked the site for my account, there were several purchases from places I'd never heard and was extremely unlikely to buy anything from. Like a clothing outfit for skatepunks called Zumiez. If they'd stuck with stuff like that they might have gotten the good before anyone caught on.

So now I'm waiting for my new card. Fortunately, I don't have too many auto pays. Off the top of my head, the only one that comes to mind is the TiVo subscription. Anything else is probably something I've forgotten and I'd prefer to have to think about before continuing.

Boulder was *always* (or at least 60 years worth) weird and a couple of places in the mountains, but there were a lot of ranchers/farmers and small business men who mostly minded their own business and looked to the community in time of real need. As the population has grown assumptions about who to turn to for help have changed as newcomers started trying to get their government oriented assumptions enforced "for fairness" and too many people likex the sound of that and didn't put in the effort to find out what it actually *meant*. Now the sudden comes. A large part of the very conservative but lower population north east part of the state was just rolled into the Boulder representational district by judicial order. These people's voices have been effectively silenced. I don't know if that's what gave TPTB in Denver the "courage" to race to the forefront of gun-grabbing in a state that for a long time was very libertarian (i.e. "do what you want but don't expect me to pay"), if it was the "medical marijuana" vote which was funded by Californians, or something else. All I know is that the state has changed significantly in the 3 years I've been gone and I doubt I would be comfortable living there even with all my family still there.

I have not had a balance in many many years so it kind of does not apply. My BIL knows I hate robo calls and bought me a 'telezapper' for Christmas. 127 My company, a pharma, moved about 500 (mostly VM) servers across the country to another pharma, a bigger company that bought us.

The techs in the new pharma were not given permissions to access these servers, which now are in their data center and physically belong to them.  As part of the migration, we installed a lot of specialized software on the servers that only their users need.

Now when there is a problem with the new software, the techies have to call us because they have no access.  We don't use this software and don't really have a clue.

Today I let one of their techs take over my desktop so he could access a server I had opened an RDP session into.  Meanwhile, I could do squat with my own work as he needed to take over my mouse.

A couple hours of wasted time, and he couldn't fix it.  I fixed it, by magic, after he released my machine.

Windows 8 has an auto update for device drivers and icons. You have to disable it if you don't want it running.

I have 8 set to ask me about updates - my windows 7 killed itself on some auto update, and by the time I found it it was too late for a system rollback.

Basically, it can't install updates anymore - something is corrupt. I did all the "fix the updater" things. Luckily, I had already planned the move to 8 on a new HD, so I have 2.5TB and an extra 2.5TB in backup HDs. Anyway, I like to see what it's going to update now before I let it. Some of that crap I don't need.

214 I work in an upper level support role for a major computer manufacturer that provides a driver site much like the one you are describing.  I am often identifying these errors and contributing feedback to projects to fix them, so I see a lot of what happens on the back end.  Generally, the problem is that infrastructure changes so much that resources are not always reorganized or remapped accurately, or someone uploaded the wrong driver package during an update.  A webcrawler isn't going to identify when a new backend server did not receive the correct files from the legacy server that it is replacing, and no one is going to hire new heads to download and test drivers for the hundred products that are supported.  The nature of the tech world is that it changes so quickly that the expense of quality testing is often of little value.

What I hated was when they got used on machining cutting inserts. If those things aren't kept in pristine condition (using the anti-seize compound), they're a nightmare.  I was the only one in   my last shop that ever did it and never had any problems with them.

What is so important that they need to update every two weeks? are they looking to see where you got your music from. I stopped updating that crap a year ago and everything still works just fine.

 

I get this with Adobe. It seemed like every ten minutes they wanted me to download and install yet another update. Hey, guys, straighten out your software once and for all, OK? I turned off the updates, and everything here still works fine too. And my blood pressure is lower.

#176 I have 8 set to ask me about updates - my windows 7 killed itself on some auto update, and by the time I found it it was too late for a system rollback.

Basically, it can't install updates anymore - something is corrupt. I did all the "fix the updater" things. Luckily, I had already planned the move to 8 on a new HD, so I have 2.5TB and an extra 2.5TB in backup HDs. Anyway, I like to see what it's going to update now before I let it. Some of that crap I don't need.

Clutch Cargo, you can access a restore point by booting from the CD.  A restore point is created every time Windows runs an update.  If that does not resolve, the problem is not driver related, it would be a corrupted OS or a bad sector on the hard drive.

People started going for Constitutional amendments when the courts made it clear they'd overturn any law tbey felt like. Never be an early adopter of a new OS until the first service pack is released.  You wouldn't believe (or you probably would) how many driver incompatibilities exist on Windows 8 right now.

And nVidea traditionally has better drivers than ATI/AMD. I like AMD products, but I would wait a while before buying a newly releaed product from them.

I do some business with Anheuser-Busch.  In order to invoice them, I need to go through their website.  They required me to change passwords today, but the rules are:

 

Must be at least 6 characters

No vowels

Must have at least 1 number

Can't resemble your user name.

 

No vowels?  Who the fuck thought that up?  Do these assholes realize that a password that needs to be written down isn't as secure as one that the user can remember? 

 

I've been trying to find the link to their webmaster so that I can tell them exactly what I think of their internet skills.  They're not a big enough customer for me not to recommend a career in food service for the idiots who came up with this.

I make it a point to turn off auto-updates on everything I possibly can. And I usually won't manually update until I've seen chatter on the Internets that a given update is safe, and should be done, to fix a security issue. I have had machines lose functionality because of updates.

239 Windows Vista and wireless connectivity. I spent an hour on this last night. Customer turned up wireless security. Everything in the house worked except the Vista machine, which showed local only. Went through all the articles in Google talking about fixes. Disabled IP v6, which didn't help (and no, I'm not walking a customer through editing the registry.) Tried to set it up as a hidden network with no security, but she messed it up somehow and it still wouldn't connect. Finally told her to turn off security and reconnect. Worked fine.

Then there are the overjoyed folks with Win8, which has a mail program almost as stupid as Mac mail. So nice of Microsoft to decide that we no longer need POP.  As for Macs, the newest version of the OS is always the most wonderful program ever created. That lasts until the new OS comes out, when you finally learn what a POS the old software was. And I love how Apple decides to make functional hardware obsolete, just because, like they did during the conversion to OSX.

Then there's Ubuntu, where every other upgrade breaks something. I use that just to keep my CLI skills sharp.

Yeah, the basic driver Windows 8 installs works fine, but if you install the newest driver from AMD it goes kablooey and AMD doesn't list the past versions anymore for this particular graphics chip so it's either the basic or nothing.

I use LastPass (free for the basic version) to generate and keep track of passwords, which it does locally. I'm really happy with it. Does anyone have anything negative to say about it? Security issues? I haven't had any problem.

246 AMD driver support (or lack of) is legendary. I've owned several generations of ATI/AMD graphics cards, and my current HD6950 will be my last one due to their driver issues in Ubuntu. I like AMD/ATI products, but its getting really hard to justify not buying an NVIDA card when just about everything about their cards are superior, from raw processing power right down to driver support. The same can be said about their CPU's vs Intel, too.

That sort of thing has been a problem for a long time before Win8. Around the time Vista shipped the price points on laptops started dropping rapidly. This was great in the obvious sense but one thing that started happening a lot was complaints about phantom inputs. You didn't even have to brush the touch pad, just putting weight any near it was enough to cause erroneous cursor movements and other annoyances. It can be really infuriating to look at the screen and find your cursor jumped into the previous paragraph while you were typing away, making you have to stop and fix it.

This really sucks because the area around the touch pad is frequently called the wrist rest, as in you're supposed to put some weight there. When you look at MacBooks or equivalently priced PC laptops, this issue is one of the areas where you get what you pay for.

Anybody still on this thread?

Bought my daughter an ASUS laptop for Christmas, brand new.  Was highly rated by several sites, and Amazon had a huge sale on it.  Damn thing won't play a YouTube video or most other simple shit, so daughter won't use it and is back to hogging our other laptop all the time.  Got on the ASUS support site via our other computer and couldn't figure it out.  Tried calling them and got into an endless hold loop.   Finally emailed them and got an answer that was undoubtedly a form letter written in India.  Did a system restore to restore the original settings, as they instructed, and the damn thing still won't play a video and web pages load at a snail's pace, worse than my 2010 Acer cheapo laptop. 

 

Anyone have any ideas?  Do I just try to return this thing or am I doing something wrong?

255 A friend of mine was having trouble with a machine they bought new.  I looked at it and poked around some and discovered that the factory disk preload image was fucked up.  A number of shortcuts and links pointed to stuff that didn't exist on the machine.

It took a while of geeking around with REGEDIT and command line to figure all that out though.

I guess the moral of the story is, sometimes the virgin factory shipped stuff has egregious problems.

You tube just uses flash so other than un-install/re-install flash i don't know what else you could do. Since it seems to be slow maybe go to speedtest.net and make sure your getting the connection speed you're supposed to and clean the disk/defrag.
