Mid Evening Open Thread

Knockin' off time.

Here's one that's always good for 200 comments: Major studies are going to wrap up soon which may finally resolve the Calories/Carbs question.

John Ekdahl had a good response to BuzzFeed's daily hit whoring: No, the NRA isn't building a creepy turnkey police state datafile like the NSA has.

An old post by Elmore Leonard on his rules for writing.

He hates Adverbs.

Purple Avenger had a good post on Camille Paglia, knocking Anthony Weiner as a sexual basket case and demanding someone tell her just what it is exactly that Hillary Clinton ever accomplished.

2 San Francisco City Attorney Dennis Herrera is demanding that Nevada reimburse California cities and counties for treatment of about 500 indigent psychiatric patients who were given one-way bus tickets to the Golden State in recent years.

Those costs include about $500,000 that Herrera says San Francisco spent on medical care, housing and other aid for 20 people shipped here in a practice sometimes called Greyhound therapy.

11 It is mandatroy that i make this statement whenever the carbs issue comes up. My father was killed by Dr. Atkins' incompetence. He was a patient of his when he suffered undiagnosed congestive heart failure (Atkins was a cardiologist) and severe blockage while undergoing chelation twice a week at his park ave office. All the while on his low carb, high fat diet.

42 The earlier thread about the SPLC demanding that if you can't help all kids you shouldn't be allowed to help any kids strikes at the root of what the left consideres "justice." They are do monomanically driven towards "equality," that they would, in the words of Margaret Thatcher, "rather the poor were poorer, provided the rich were less rich." They want to destroy and make everyone equally poor (aside from those who are more equal than others), and that that situation would somehow spontaneous create a utopia were everyone is free of teh eeevils of "hierarchy" and would live in communal bliss/ So convinced of this they are, that they are willing to destroy everything to hunt their White whale. 49 Major studies are going to wrap up soon which may finally resolve the Calories/Carbs question. dunno It seems if you limit your calories, and make sure you are eating foods to give you the protein, vitamins and nutrients your body needs, spread out throughout the day, giving you the energy you need for the day, then you funnel yourself automatically into healthy eating and maintaining your weight (or losing if the case may be). You will logically reduce breads, processed foods and yummy desserts. Exercise or not. Exercise is a bonus to strength, or endurance.

The food stamp requirements exempt a house and a car, placing no caps on value.  So, you could own a plush multi-million dollar crib and drive a new Mercedes and not break that part of the restrictions.

There are explicit and fairly tight lmitations on bank/brokerage account value, investment income and such.

Everything explicitly mention as restricted is traceable with paper trail.

The law says nothing about actual green money cash in duffels and mattresses, rare stamp/coin collections, art collections.

Basically, if you had a Walter White situation with a pallet full of cash money and kept your bank/brokerage/bond holding under about $4,000 you could legally get food stamps while owning a lux car and McMansion.

Star Trek actor Michael Dorn tells the Huffington Post that there was actual interest in a Captain Worf show last year, although it was put on hold because of Star Trek Into Darkness:

"Last year there was interest and I talked to a couple producers and we actually had pitch meeting with Paramount and CBS," Dorn said. "Business things got in the way in terms of the JJ Abrams movie coming out and CBS/Paramount and their relationship with JJ Abrams. I don't think they wanted to step on his toes by putting a new series on, but it's not dead yet. I've finished the script and hopefully someone will take a look at this and say we can do this."

103 and by the by, I lost a lot of weight couple of years ago (admitted, I gained much of it back).
Two rules:
1 - eat less (you don't really need that mid-morning bagel, although I cut back much more)
2 - more physical activity (being able to walk to and from work, at a minimum 45 minutes each day helped; I eventually pushed it to over an hour each way)
3 - skip the evening meal and have some alcohol (while taking that long walk home, and no I am serious; at least, it worked for me)

although I did this in 2008, before the coronation of King Barky, so at that time I had some hope about this and that (a blonde in particular), if knowing that helps

114 Star Trek actor Michael Dorn tells the Huffington Post that there was actual interest in a Captain Worf show last year, although it was put on hold because of Star Trek Into Darkness: "Last year there was interest and I talked to a couple producers and we actually had pitch meeting with Paramount and CBS," Dorn said. "Business things got in the way in terms of the JJ Abrams movie coming out and CBS/Paramount and their relationship with JJ Abrams. I don't think they wanted to step on his toes by putting a new series on, but it's not dead yet. I've finished the script and hopefully someone will take a look at this and say we can do this." 125 I know you hate it ace, but it's calories in/calories out. That's it. I've found that people who argue it's deeper than that are usually overweight and don't have the willpower to starve for a few months.

I was pretty fat for most of my life, did the eat better and exercise shit on and off for years. Never worked. I finally sucked it up and went on the anorexic diet for about half a year. Lost 60 pounds. That was about 5 years ago, and now I eat whatever I want, just try to not overdo it too often. And after I lost the weight I found exercise a hell of a lot easier. Running two miles used to leave me gasping for air, now I do about 30 miles a week no problem. I'm back to eating like a fat guy, but I don't look like it.

130 "This being an open thread, for those who are interested: my runaway cat Mags never showed up, so I'm pretty sure either the coyotes (in Delaware?) or foxes out back got him."

Damn, that's too bad. Condolences.

As for coyotes, they are everywhere. Extremely adaptable, smart, prolific and good at hiding. I've seen photos of coyotes in Dolores Park in the heart of incredibly crowded urban San Francisco.

And they are major predators of domestic cats, unfortunately. Dogs will chase cats, often for fun. Coyotes *hunt* cats for meals, and will do things dogs typically don't do, such as quietly lie in wait for an ambush.

One real problem in suburbia is that it takes a bigger round than you would think to put down a nuisance coyote on the first shot. Big enough to cause consternation among neighbors who freak out at any discharge of a gun nearby. You may want to speak to your local bowhunting contingent about that matter.

203 Here's one that's always good for 200 comments: Major studies are going to wrap up soon which may finally resolve the Calories/Carbs question. I guarantee it won't. First of all, because what other serious stuff is settled by facts. Even if the facts were a fairly complete picture instead of a narrow slice - and *proper* science virtually always studies narrow slices (this studies a narrow slice - whether it's proper or not I don't yet know). Secondly, because the human body is a hugely complex mechanism, not a boiler. (throws adenoviruses and epigentic changes at study, watches it explode into a ball of green fire)

217 Lots of good writers hate adverbs.  Stephen King says to go back over your manuscript and "kill your darlings," meaning spot and delete the adverbs.

Some good pointers from the late Elmore Leonard.  They can help all kinds of prose, not just fiction.

Speaking of good prose, hope you guys look in on Steven Greenhut at the San Diego Union Tribune, and Reason.com and all kinds of other places.  Great job exposing government excess, in the target rich Golden State.

240 219 Lots of good writers hate adverbs. Stephen King says to go back over your manuscript and "kill your darlings," meaning spot and delete the adverbs. King would be well-advised to take a pass through his own work, and gun down every instance of "all the same." Of course he would run out of ammo...

282 127 I know you hate it ace, but it's calories in/calories out. That's it. I've found that people who argue it's deeper than that are usually overweight and don't have the willpower to starve for a few months. Well it's true for the most part. Our bodies aren't nuclear reactors so all mass we take in eventually leaves us minus any accumulation. Our bodies though are bioreactors and each one is set up a little bit differently with a varying efficiencies and preferences for the fuel. So you may eat 2000 calories in a day and expend 1800 of them and the other 200 leave in your waste. Another person could eat that same 2000 and expend only 1700 store 150 as fat and then the remaining leaves in waste.

We are back from a road trip to New Orleans, took one of the twin daughters to start her freshman year at Tulane. My wife's best friend warned us that when they dropped their daughter off at college a few years back, they said their goodbyes, walked to the car, mom drove, dad cried for the five hour drive home. I figured it would be tough to say good bye but didn't realize how tough. We had the other daughter and my wife's sister with us, which kept me from a five hour cry. I just felt like it.

Saturday we head to Charlottesville for the other daughter's move in at UVA.

No regrets nor complaints. It's a first world problem. But the house will be  way too quiet come Sunday.

"Perhaps you have read some of my recent work: Perhaps not. I infer that you may be aware of it since your columns often select themes that closely mirror my writings, usually a day or two after they are circulated. I've lost 60 lbs so far this year by cutting back on carbs, especially the bread-rice-potato-type carbs.  I think it's a matter of reducing both calories and carbs.  If you cut back on bread and potatoes, it's easy to cut down on calories.  And for me, eating bread and bakery stuff makes me crave more bead and cupcakes, so it's easier to just cut it out altogether.  I eat all the meat, nuts, vegetables, eggs, and fats I want, and I don't get hungry nearly as often as I did before I started the low-carb diet.

Exercise is important, but diet is the key to weight loss.  You get strong in the gym; you get skinny in the kitchen.

Skeptic: How do you know your models are valid?

Model Makers: Because we said so! Anti-science!

Politicians: Denier! Kill the Heretic!

Skeptic: So, how does your model account for clouds and water vapor?

Model Makers: Shut up. I'll sue you!! I'll sue you!!

Nature: Hey, guys, um, I'm not warming in the last 15 years...

Model Makers, Politicans: Shut up! Denier! Heretic! Burn the Witch!

547 Speaking of Star Trek, I was just reading over some stuff at AICN.com about Enterprise since they're releasing some blu-rays of the show. One story that made me laugh out loud: someone mailed a package filled with rotting garbage to the head office of UPN/Paramount with a note saying: "this is what you've done to Star Trek". One more: a nameless UPN suit wanted a different boy band to come onto the Enterprise and sing a song each week.

570 Damn . In too late for carb / calorie discussion. I'll comment anyway. Not all food calories are created equal. It's not a straight thermodynamic equation. There are many variables on how certain foods are converted to energy. Even with protein the body absorbs the various protein sources differently based on the BCAA make up.

Oh, jeez, Gingy, I once worked at art show at the Javitz in NY.  All that time on the concrete floors is brutal.  If you are still reading, go sit on the edge of the bathtub, stick your bare feet in.  Run the water on them as cold as it will get, then run it as hot as you can stand.  Repeat, repeat, repeat.  It's a live-saver.

I think the point that it was trying to make is that Conspiracies are not so unlikely as people may think. That being said, if you mention the word "conspiracy" in a conversation, you have just lost most of my attention.

605 The Leonard piece was fantastic.  I'm glad to see somebody hasn't forgotten good ol' John Steinbeck.  These rules are ones I've been following nearly all my adult writing life.  Oh, you can use a "whispered," a "screamed," or a "shouted" once in a while, and maybe a "murmured" or "muttered" for comic effect; but -- like airplane cement on a plastic model -- very very sparingly.
