Mike Lee: It's Important We Start Funding These Government Functions Immediately
— Ace

And he's willing to fund all government functions, except for one -- ObamaCare.

Interesting. But for now Reid is saying No, No, No and "We support the federal government."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid came to the floor a little before 4:30 p.m. to knock down the latest House Republican plan to fund parts of the government. It’s “just another whacky idea” from tea party Republicans, Reid said. “We support the federal government,” he said. “That’s our job. That’s what we do.”

Calling tea party Republicans “rabble-rousers,” the Nevada Democrat said that “we won’t be forced to choose” between what parts of the government to bring back from shutdown. It’s “not a serious plan,” Reid said. "And I'm a murderous pederast who's into rape and whatnot."

I may have added the last lines.

Oh, and this is just jolly good fun.

At Sixth & I, Furloughed Government Employees Seek Refuge

The sound of ping pong balls echo as a group of furloughed government employees gather around a TV, watching West Wing reruns and snacking on John Boehner's head.

Not Boehner's literal head, of course, but clementines from a basket labeled "John Boehner," because they are round and orange, like the Speaker of the House's head. The furloughed federal workers are gathered at Sixth & I in Chinatown, where the historic synagogue and community center has organized "Shutdown Central," a sort of "adult daycare" for "nonessential" furloughed government employees to come hang out and pass the time until the government shutdown is over and they can return to work.

They can't just go home? Do they have no chores to do? No outside interests? No gym? No children?

"I'm trying to keep a positive attitude about it, just because that's the kind of person I am," says Daniel...

Yeah, sounds like it.

...a government employee who works with documents management for one of the main departments within the government (Daniel did not want to disclose his last name or full job title for work reasons). "But to be honest, I'm losing about $250 a day when I'm not working. That's basically a car payment. When I think about it that way, there's so much cooler stuff that I could be doing. That's a lot of money that I'm losing out on," Daniel says.

And yet there you are, in the Ping Pong Rubber Room.

91 Just heard a report on another essential gov't employee. Dude had a senior level position at the EPA but he told them he was also an undercover agent for the CIA and he would disappear for days, weeks even months at a time. He told the EPA that he had a back condition (false) that forced him to fly 1st class to places like London (on CIA business) and stay i $1000/per night hotels. He also spent a ton of time at his vacation home when he was supposedly on CIA business. He finally got caught but was not fired. Best part, he was allowed to retire and is now collecting his full pension from the EPA. Top men.

92 There's a brou ha ha brewing in the UK. The DM wrote an article attacking Ed Miliband's dead daddy. The left is calling it a "smear" which is what the left calls facts. They say you should never attack a politician's family (hahahaha!). But Ed is always bringing up his dad, praising him, and saying how much he learned from. The problem is that his dead daddy was a raging commie of the stalinist type. So, the DM tried to refresh its readers as to what the dead daddy was all about.

96 You want to know why this is happening? These people are in do-nothing FedGov jobs that are basically clucking hen sessions. They go to "work" to socialize on your dime, because they have been in the system long enough to be essentially unfireable and have also delegated whatever duties they may once have had. This is the problem, who wants to spend their life weaseling out of work and doing nothing. Normal people can't function in this cluster duck, that's why they get out and losers run the place.

97 Even more than TFG, Dingy has been at the forefront of obstructing anything he doesn't like. Most House bills never see the light of day in the Senate due to him.

He needs to be taken down several notches, and this is a great way to do it. I fact, I wonder if it was the consistent obstructionism of Reid that finally led to Boner stiffening his spine?

I know this -- I don't care how long the shutdown goes on. It doesn't materially affect me, and even if it did I would feel the same way. Technically, OCare benefits me, but I still won't cooperate with it.

The House has the Constitutional duty to originate spending bills. The Senate and TFG have to figure out a way to get most of what they want through that process. It appears they need to learn that lesson.

This. I agree, and I'm a GS13 for one of the services.  Our office took a big hit.  We have military as well as GS (and a few contractors), and we're actually understaffed even at full strength.  There are a lot of things not getting done, and since most of the continuity is provided by the GS's, there's a lot of experience that's unavailable.

That said, there absolutely needs to be a way to thin the herd of government, but it must not be via seniority.  I hate the union, refuse to join, and think it's an impediment to the mission.  I have no problem with veterans preferences at hiring time, but those preferences stay for RIFs, and they shouldn't.  It's nearly impossible to fire for cause, and if you can check a demographic box, you're even more secure.  It's bullshit, and it's strangling the government.

If "non-essential" meant the same thing in government parlance that it does in the private sector, you'd be right.  Private industry can cull non-performers, though.  Public sector unions don't allow that, which is why I can't stand the GS system.

"Essential" employees are bare bones crews.  They're designated as such (and usually supervisors, or with specific skills needed for time sensitive operations) and have to report during emergencies, or contingencies like this.  They can maintain things for a short while, but not for sustained operations.  Even the non-essential workers perform essential tasks, but there's usually not a short term time criticality to them.

248 Momma Sefton of blessed memory derisively referred to them as "Joo-nitarians." I have never heard that. It's great. I don't meant to sound disparaging of Unitarians. They have done a lot of work to help the needy and I know some very nice caring ones ones. It's just that I went to a UU service several times and they didn't even mention God. I understand that they're not Trinitarians but not even to give praise to God? I had a mentor in the ministry who helped me through the ordination process years ago and he said. "If I had to do it over again I'd be a UU." It troubled me back the that he felt that way. Now he serves one of the biggest churches in the state and doesn't actually believe in most of the ordination vows he took. I would imagine that practicing Jews that aren't "Joo-nitarian" feel the same way about Synagogues that have if effect lost the meaning of the spiritual heritage. except for a vague Jewish cultural identity.

255 >>There are 2 county owned golf courses near me. They charge $30-40 a round. Similar quality courses in the area that are private charge $30-40 as well. If it's being subsidized it's because the public courses are run so inefficiently, they need subsidies to compete. But they're not giving any deals that I can't get in the private sector. How much do you think it costs to camp at a private campground? It isn't very expensive. Same same. If you're saying gov't isn't efficient I don't think you're going to get a lot of argument here. But the government owns all sorts of shit that gets subsidized by our tax dollars.

256 Thousands of municipal golf courses all over the country, not to mention those on military bases. Not free, just like it's not free to stay in the lodge in Yellowstone. All this time you've been sucking off the public teat and you didn't even know it. Posted by: Gristle Encased Head at October 01, 2013 07:02 PM (+lsX1) ____________ Again, the green fees for those courses are no cheaper than comparable private courses. They are often money making operations for the city/county. On the other hand the true cost of maintaining camp sites in Yellowstone would mean $100 a day to camp there. Instead it's $20 thanks to the billions spent by tax dollars on national parks. See the difference?

*sigh*  Only because those yell leaders assured me you're cute.   Also The Upton.

Today's Rant Special:

Wow. Power of the purse. How does that work?

You want to know why this seems so shocking and appalling and horrifying and beyond the pale? Because we have moved so far beyond an semblance of operating the Federal government according to actual Constitutional principles that when it does happen it seems EXTREMMEEE!!!11!!!.

This is how it's supposed to work. This is why the power of the purse exists in the first place. This is why there are separate bodies of government and checks and balances. The Constitution was designed to make sure that there can be those standing athwart yelling halt. In those instances where one Congress has rammed something through, the next Congress can say "Yeah, about that. Nice law and all but you can't have any money to implement it." It's about giving citizens, who, after all, are the ones whose wishes are supposed to be represented, a chance to step in and vote in those who will do their level best to get rid of whatever it was.

So, no, I'm not too appalled by this. This is how it's supposed to be. Fine, it's not the tactic you would have chosen. Okay. Well, this is where we are. If I've had to suck it up and vote for McCain and then Romney because of the Good of The Party, then those who oppose this need to suck it up and stop whinging about how this isn't the tactic they would have chosen. Yes, yes, you've made that clear. Now stfu and stfu and rally behind what the Party, that you claim is ever so important and vital to the promotion of conservative ideas, is doing. If not? Well, do not say one single solitary word to me again, ever in the history of ever, about how solemn duty compels that I vote for anyone with an (R) behind that person's name.

Now, while we're at it, can the Senate get around to that whole passing a budget thing? That would be aces.

Annnnnd nood up.

It's bullshit, and it's strangling the government."

You're catching a lot of good people in your net.  The problem with the federal government isn't that there aren't good people working for it.  The problem is that they can't get rid of the bad employees like the private sector can.

284 There is nothing wrong with having cultural events at a synagogue and perhaps I shouldn't comment-but half my family is Jewish so I will- this is not what the first thing I would want to see if I wanted to connect to my Jewish spiritual background: "In 2004, Sixth & I opened its doors as a place where people, especially those in their twenties and thirties, could connect to Judaism, arts, and culture both religiously and socially. At Sixth & I, what it means to be Jewish is up to you. With a multi-denominational and non-membership approach, we are an ongoing experiment in creating a uniquely Jewish experience, where identity and community intersect on your terms. Sixth & I introduces young professionals and Jews of all ages to an unconventional, inclusive model of 21st-century Jewish life." Hey; It's all up to you. Whatever you want Judaism to mean. Thousands of years of history and teaching and prayer life and it's all abput being on your terms. Meh.

Why are the politicians who involved this government of limited, enumerated powers in anything that is "non-essential" not in prison?
