Last night watching the local news they were bemoaning the "Complexity" of Missouri Castle law after some dude stabbed an intruder to death. Strangely they had to go to the next county over to get a DA who said "it was complex."
MO castle law is pretty clear on this issue, you try to break into my house I get to kill you.
The St. Chuck DA was all hand wringing over the fact "imminent threat of harm" parts and claiming it's over broad (none of those apply for an intruder anyway.)
The only thing I can think of is this seemed to happen in one of the...erg...less than reputable parts of town, while I don't doubt that the dude broke in, it's entirely possible that after the own onwer subdued him he went ahead and offed him anyway. But it's strange to go after Castle Law on that one and start hand wringing about it's complexity. (That law is specifically written though to be fairly open, because the prior law, which was only repealed in 2007 was far to strict and people were afraid to use self-defnese.)

I live in a casino town, and there are usually a couple of armed robberies in the parking lots of each casino every year. The local rag, of course, underreports this news as they get mucho dinero from casino ads and don't want to tap on the aquarium and scare the fish.
With over 3 million visitors per year, that's not a terribly high incidence rate but it does happen. But you can just about guarantee that the victims had one or more these characteristics -- old, female, not alert and looking around. You can't do much about the first two, but that last one is sooo important. Robbers are looking for easy marks. Don't be one.

What do you think a JVM and the MS framework are? They're virtual architectures that executes virtual machine instructions. Things like Java/C-sharp, etc are just compilers for those virtual machines.

Sorry didn't read most comments, but my first reaction was the same as booger's, above - at least the quoted statement is just another "pay more taxes or the children get it" a la the teacher's unions, police version.
Surely the situation varies substantially from place to place, but here' something that's befuddled me for a long time (and I'm too lazy to go look up the explanation, which is probably available at several obscure but good "right wing" think tank sites): how the hell, with the oceans of tax revenue in which almost cities, counties, and states have been swimming for a long time, is there any pressure on budgets, much less the need for furloughs?
I know, I know - simple arithmetic, in the end. And I'm not familiar with Milwaukee's finances (wasn't Walker county executive there for a long time before he took the statehouse?). But even though I get that tax revenues should be down quite a bit in a recession, I still don't get the extent of stress on public finances and personnel situations - unless, that is, the gold-plating is even worse than I imagined. Of course, it would be unthinkable for "public servants" to take pay cuts for, ya know, "the public". Sort of the whole point of both "public" and "service" pretty much no longer being part of the "public service" mindset (sorry, dedicated cops, teachers, and social workers, who exist in your millions - but you like others will rightly only be judged by the worst union slimeball you allow to represent you, no matter how responsible and decent you are).
It probably exists, but I'd love to see a simple bold graphical depiction of, say, CA's total tax revenues, per capita tax burden, per capita public spending, per capita public employee head-count, and average and median public employee compensation (all in adjusted dollars) over the period 1960 - 2010. Fifty years, from the best public services on Earth and balanced budgets and reasonable taxes to, uh, what we see today.
These sort of ratios and comparisons are irrefutable - even though they take some explaining when presented to your average NPR-level dolt utterly lacking in analytical skills or tendencies. And of course half the fun would be the sputtering incomprehension at the fact that Prop 13 is no part of the explanation. You'd be amazed at how many people in eastern states who've never set foot in the Golden one automatically and firmly believe the myth of Prop 13 being the problem. Ya know, "lack of revenues".
So I'm happy the Milwaukee LE types are urging people to arm themselves. But it sounds, based on that quote, like they still should quit LE and do something else - find an occupation where money, not service, is the point. So as to create a better fit between their nature and their profession.

A large segment of today's Republican party are ex Democrats. Historically the Democrat party was White Supremacist. When the Democrats changed their game and decided to use non whites for political power, many racist Democrats came into the Republican Party. They are both different forms of the same progressive demon.
On guns Republicans are on the side of angels. This is the one issue that are sticking true to their old freedom loving roots and I back them on this. My family escaped Tito's totalitarianism and gun control was how the Communist maintained their rule.

Jack Gordon was my father in law. In 2008 he disappeared without a trace from a remote property in southern CO. On the same day, a neighbor who was a convicted felon living under an assumed name in violation of his parole terms also disappeared. We believe the neighbor killed Jack, but the local Sheriff's office is utterly incompetent and unwilling to bring any pressure to bear on this guy's mother who has been abetting him at evading apprehension. The neighbor was somewhat internet savvy. I started the blog last summer to create an internet meme of sorts, inextricably linking the two names and hopefully drawing the attention of the scumbag and goad him into making a mistake, or even coming after me. I will not give up my guns, and I will be prepared to defend myself in that eventuality, and perhaps justice for Jack Gordon will be done. In the meantime, I wait, and drink, and sometimes come here to amuse myself.

Okay, I didn't read all the comments,so I'm not sure it's been touched on, but I know a little of the local politics involved with this Milwaukee County Sheriff.
The city of Milwaukee has its own police department. The County has the sheriff. They are a little bit of an anachronism, in that most of the other cities in Milwaukee county also have their own police departments. However, the Sheriff is an elected position, and sheriff Clarke a good conservative democrat, who is hated by the socially liberal but fiscally conservative County Executive Chris Abele. They don't like each other, and Abele's method of kneecapping Clarke is to cut his funding and diminish his responsibility.
Clarke is not afraid to take his side of an issue to the airwaves, in a blunt and mostly true manner, which is what we have here. But of all the law enforcement chiefs I can think of, this guy deserves support.

Thanks for the info on the sheriff. I waqs a little intrigued when I first read this so I googled him. Turns out that he is a bit of a Tea Party hero, and the WI dem machine can't stand him. Nonetheless he was able to beat a "real" democrat in the primary in 2010. After this they'll be going after him even harder in 2014 (not at all placated by the fact that he is absolutely correct).
