13 I knew that if I posted this in the last thread the ONT would show up. Orbital Sciences Corporation successfully launched their Antares rocket from Wallops Island, VA this afternoon. It was the first test flight of this rocket, which will be used to launch the Cygnus cargo ship to the ISS. The flight went off without a hitch. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_b1R3NetAo It looks like a camera fell over at liftoff or something. It was a bit scary watching it live. At 2:00 in, tilt your head 90º to the right to get the proper perspective. The main payload was a dummy version of Cygnus, but Antares also orbited three small experimental cubesats that are powered by smartphones. http://www.phonesat.org/index.php Another interesting thing about this launch is that the Antares first stage uses two Russian NK-33 engines. They were originally built for the ill-fated N-1 moon rocket which failed to reach orbit in four attempts between 1969 and 1972. After the program was cancelled, the Soviet government ordered the hardware destroyed. The engines were hidden in a warehouse where they sat for 30 years until after the fall of the Soviet Union. They are a very efficient design, and today is the first time they were used to put a payload into orbit, after all those years (the engines are actually about 40 years old now). So I imagine some elderly Russian rocket scientists were also celebrating this launch. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NK-33

Did you read about the project where the old Rocketdyne F-1 engines from the Saturn 5  were disassembled and examined, and were being prototyped for the F-1B engine, to be used in a new booster?

It was linked at Instapundit a few days ago.   Pretty interesting stuff.

31 The NY Jets traded Darelle Revis to Tampa Bay for a 1st rounder this year which is the 13th pick, and conditional 4th rounder for next year.

Any fellow Jets fans want to guess what they'll do with that pick?

Slow linebacker, undersized pass rusher, lead handed tight end, or technique deficient offensive lineman?

Whomever they pick, other GM's will say "we had him slated as a 3rd rounder"

Unfortunately they didn't throw Sanchez in with the deal

at the race today, the guy sitting right behind me was talking about how he used to be one of the staff security guys at the track, and on one of the previous races, the night before the race, this whole station wagon full of girls showed up wanting to go to Kasey Kayne's trailer... the security dude didn't let them in, of course, so they turned around and drove away... but then Kasey came out of his trailer and ran towards the station wagon, hopped in the driver's seat, and personally drove the entire station wagon to his trailer....

seems as though Kasey is a bit of a player

The organizers of the Earth Day Network have been gathering faces, of humans and other animals, to bring attention to the crisis of our time: global warming. The mosaic of faces with be available Monday on line and at thousands of events worldwide.

116 Dr, McCoy's Medical Log: The Captain has been acting increasingly agitated and is showing signs of stress and erratic behavior. I can think of no reason for this, except in the last two episodes he was poisoned with an incurable love drug by a psychotic brat, his memory was stolen and his new bride was murdered. Other than that, things have been pretty routine.

119 One thing that's been bothering me about the Dzhokhar hunt: Dzhokhar's in a Mercedes, and in full view, backs-up/runs-over and then trenches and drags Tamerlan. (little butt-head brothers always screw things up). Tamerlan somehow breaks free (the pain of being trenched probably helped), and Dzhokhar keeps going. How did the police lose Dzhokhar? Were there no helicopters overhead, no other cruisers on-site, no radios to call the make & model in, no Lojack (it's a known-and apparently-reported-stolen MERCEDES) to activate? Tell me there was no "interference" ... How did the police lose Dzhokhar? Was it too dark?

Get your feet to the floor, everybody rock and roll
Youve got nothing to lose just the rhythm and blues, thats all, yeah

Well pick you up and take you away
Get down tonight.

Smokin, smokin
Were cookin tonight, just keep on tokin
Smokin, smokin

Everybody jumpin, dancin to the boogie tonight
Clap your hands, move your feet

#2: What were they doing at/near MIT?

Here's my guess: They were there trying to plant a couple of bombs at MIT, but they were spotted by the MIT p.o.

To prevent him from calling it in and alerting others, they rushed in and blasted him. But it was too late; the p.o. managed to call in the suspicious men.

Agreed, it's unlikely those were an issue.  Somehow, more than one link in the critical chain broke, and that's where the investigation should and will look first.  Redundant safety systems, failsafes, etc.  Multiple systems had to fail for that plant to burn and then explode.

Posted by: chemjeff at April 22, 2013 12:38 AM (BBWjt)

I'm in the manufacturing world...the cost of compliance with OSHA's shit is astronomical to the point where it's a legit drain on the economy.  If Sarbanes-Oxley costs a few billion a year, then OSHA compliance has to be in the tens of billions.  More of them is not what we need.  The Cloward-Piven thing seems fun on its face, but before you killed OSHA, you'd kill tons of jobs.  They are Legion.

202 NDH  --well its fertilizer.  Up north where I come from its mostly used in the spring when they plant so you might make more than you are selling each week over the winter to meet the spring demand.   SpaceBook is full of links to junk science and lies but I did hear some snippet on the radio or TV that some agency or other had announced they were storing way too much but I just question whether some dumbass gubmint drone heard how many tons exploded and flipped open a book of regulations to a page that applies to a Lowes not to a plant.

Of course it is possible that there was extreme criminal negligence at the plant.  Not every business owner/manager is a Hank Reardon.   There are money grubbers that would figure fines if caught breaking the laws are cheaper than the costs of doing things safely.

Farming and modern chemicals are the new spacebook bogeymen lately.  Probably a sign that the commies can't squeeze much more out of the CAGW hoax.

232 "So FB is full of negligence claims for the West, TX plant disaster already. I also heard something over the air that "they were storing more 100 times more fertilizer than allowed" and didn't have a special permit" 10% or even 20% over permit, sure - 100x no. Not having the right permit, very unlikely - even in Texas. People just don't understand the power of explosives. Personally, I see older plants tend to be designed with too much local storage and too much consolidated storage. This is an artifact of expensive and difficult to implement control schemes and pre-jit business models. A modern design (not in China) would likely use more, small tanks and the rail off load would be well separated. Modern flow controllers, etc. allow that to be effective and cost efficient. Now, building a retirement home across the street - where there frick'en permit?

234 The FBI was alerted by Russia's security services to serious new concerns about one of the Boston bomb suspects as recently as last November, it was claimed on Sunday night.

As the agency was accused of "dropping the ball" over the case, NBC News reported that Tamerlan Tsarnaev had been seen making six visits to a known Islamic militant in a mosque in the Russian republic of Dagestan.

The visits came during a six month trip that Tamerlan made to the city of Makhachkala to see his family, NBC said.

According to a local police official, a case file on Tsarnaev was then handed over to the FBI along with a request for further information. However, the FBI never replied.

The agency has already admitted that it interviewed Tamerlan Tsarnaev in 2011 after Russia raised concerns that he was becoming a follower of radical Islam, but found nothing "derogatory" against him and did not pursue the case further.

The 26-year-old, who allegedly orchestrated last Monday's bombings with his younger brother Dzhokhar, was killed in the early hours of Friday morning in a shootout with police. It came just hours after police released images of the pair to the public.

In a further twist, Channel 4 News claimed on Sunday that Tamerlan had phoned home in the wake of the bombings and told his mother that the FBI had already called him to accuse him of being responsible.

According to the report, Tamerlan telephoned his mother on Wednesday last week and said he had replied to the FBI's accusations by saying: "That's your problem". The claims emerged from an interview with his father, Ansor.

The FBI declined to comment directly on either claim on Sunday.

288 "I didn't realize they made generators with propane, that is perfect!"

Further win:

Modern gasoline automotive engines have fuel injectors. Small gasoline generators do not. They have carburetors.

Modern automotive gasoline is typically full of shit that it shouldn't be full of, first among equals of which being ethanol. This means that it gums up carburetors like nobody's business. As well as melting plastic fuel tanks, eating fuel line seals, washing lubricating oil off of cylinder walls, you name it. Go to any small engine shop and just say "ethanol", and watch the brows furrow in response.

Better yet, gasoline with all of this unwelcome crap in it tends to go bad simply while being stored. Thus hugely reducing its utility as an emergency stored fuel source.

Propane avoids all of these problems entirely.

It works SO well that I'm sure the government will ban the stuff shortly.

306 So is it okay to turn that one off? It's turned all the way to the left; there are 3 options.

The printing on the breaker handle is amps, not volts.  If you see a big one with 200 on it, that's probably your main breaker for a 220/240V service.

Typically, well pumps will be on a double wide (220/240v) breaker in the 20A range.

The three positions are on/tripped/off.  When tripped, the breaker is disconnecting the power.  To reset tripped 3-position breaker, move it to off, then on.

I like the Cutler-Hammer "CH" breakers, they only have two positions, on/off which is less confusing for users.  If a breaker trips, it moves to the off position.

322 If you've been having any lightning recently, I've seen GFCI trips during lightening storms.

In a lot of places the garage light may be wired up to the same circuit that's doing the garage receptacle.  If the light is wired to the load side of a GFCI, then the lights could go out on a GFCI trip.

A GFCI is those rectangular receptacle thingies with the test/reset buttons.

You MAY just need to push the reset button on a GFCI

Posted by: @PurpAv at April 21, 2013 09:58 PM (/gHaE)

323 Technically speaking, hacked on by amateurs, but I only have very experienced amateurs on hand to fix it, too. The guy who built the place was not a professional builder, and we don't have building inspectors out here. We had it inspected several times before we bought it, and they all said it was fine. Of course, they can't see behind the walls!

325 Its not uncommon to hear a bit of contact arcing when a switch is turned on.

If you flipped the switch and heard a click/snap sound elsewhere, that was probably a breaker or GFCI tripping.

That would indicate a defective switch, not just normal contact arcing

335 the breaker panel did leak around the pipe thingee that comes into the house from outside

That's VERY bad.  That leak needs to be plugged.

The pipe thingie coming in from outside probably has no overcurrent protection on the wire coming in from the meter -- ie. that wire can short/burn freely and not trip a main breaker.

If there's an outside breaker by the meter, then you have a "meter main" setup, and the wall penetration wire has some protection.

338 ut the light it turns off and on has another switch that turns it on and off as well.

If one switch operates something, that's a single pole switch (although in a pinch, a junk box 3-way or 4-way can be made to function as a single pole)

If two, then the switches are 3-ways.

If three or more switches operate the same thing, then there's at least two 3-ways, and the remainder will be 4-way

Posted by: @PurpAv at April 21, 2013 10:14 PM (/gHaE)

339 I have no idea where the meter is. I do think they do that grounding thing out here, because one of my neighbors had an incident a few years back where they forgot to do so and water backed all up into his box and nothing happened. But they came and checked everyone's thingees. Hopefully ours was among the checked. The guys working on my basement did seal it up as best they could.

349 I have no idea where the meter is

It'll be outside pretty close to where that basement wall penetration happens.  The electric code severely limits the length of the wire from the meter to the main breaker.

you can dig up outside around where that wall penetration happens and stuff big gaps with electrical duct seal and then get some roof tar and seal the wall penetration area and around the conduit (or service entrance cable if its cable).

If there's foundation cracks in that area letting water in, that's a bigger problem..

356 They don't think it's afoundation leak. It's walk out basement, so it's not really a basement per se...and they think the leak is coming in where the stucco meets the band for the decking, which is also where the basement walls are covered in concrete and huge rocks. All concerned seem to think it's an easy enough fix, or at any rate at least easier than foundation issues. I really think all they can do is put some silicone caulking around it and maybe remove some of the stucco and put flashing behind it. 359 Hi Miss Tammy! Haven't been 'round much, last few days news to distressing for words, plus China has their own awfulness right now, with the big earthquake. Saw more of the country this week-end and tried to forget our newspapers sadly resemble the propaganda found in the papers here.

360 If you wanted to fix it tonight, WMT sells a GE branded 3-way too.  They're not as quite as robust as the P-S commercial ones, but their price is under $2, and you can get'em 24x7x365.

I used a couple of them on 3-way's that operate a light in garage laundry area and they've worked OK for a year or so now since I energized that new circuit.

361 Mz Mittenz, China is so huge I always figure the very few people I know there are not affected by any bad news I hear about. Are you okay?? Between the flu and earthquakes, it's a mess there lately, too!

362 So the PS commercial ones are the ones I want, then. Cuz now that I think about it all my plug in outlet thingees spark pretty good, too. I know a li'l sparking is okay, but now and then I'll get a big spark form the dang surge protectors, which are NOT cheap ones.

366 It is a huge country, we are in NCentral, earthquake was in SW, with great loss of life. Our families were emailing right away to make sure we hadn't been traveling in the hit region but as hubby is working here, we are only making smaller trips on the week-ends. We just keep up on the flu news and stay away from chickens-if it ever makes the jump to human to human transmission, we are out of here like a bat out of hell, and into quarantine!

Posted by: Mrs Mittens at April 21, 2013 10:52 PM (aDbwM)

367 Which ones are the very best? I could care less about cost.

Hubble hospital grade.  When you see their price, price WILL become an issue ;->

The Pass-Seymour commercial grade switches and receptacles (part numbers prefixed with CSxxx for switches and CRxxx for receptacles) seem to be a very good compromise between cost and value.  The P-S residential grade stuff is junk like all residential grade stuff is.

That's what I fitted for 90% of the switches and receptacles in my crib when I was ripping out all the crappy residential grade stuff.  The CRxxx receptacles grip plugs very firmly.  You won't have shit falling out of the wall with them

372 but now and then I'll get a big spark form the dang surge protectors, which are NOT cheap ones.

The built-in receptacles in surge protectors and power strips are usually cheap junk.

You may want to look at getting a TVSS installed -- that's a mondo surge protector that protects the whole house.

I have a generic fits-all one hanging off my main breaker panel and another on in a plugin breaker type format on a Square-D subpanel that feeds my office/lab circuits.

The plug-in format is real easy to install if there's a couple of spare slots in the panel.

387 Hah, I bet that's what is in my laundry room.

That's probably a "single" rather than a ubiquitous duplex receptacle.  Nobody really makes a shit grade of that format device.

They use singles in laundry areas because the electric code allows a dedicated appliance like a washer (or fridge) to not be GFCI protected when a single is used.

391 Home Depot and Lowes sell an inexpensive TVSS made by Intermatic that hangs off the main panel.

Typically, you'd hook it up to a 2-pole 15A breaker.

If you want to go up a grade, the Eaton CVX050/CVX100 devices are nice and will take a bigger hit than the cheap Intermatic and survive..

396 But this thing doesn't protect me against cheap ass switches or anything, right? Just lghtning or other surge-y things?

Right.  It can't do anything about failed downstream devices.  Bum switches, receptacles, and shorts aren't really a voltage surge threat.  They can cause huge amperage spikes when shit goes all shorty/sparky.

In a 2006 era crib you got breakers that will trip magnetic as well as thermal, so dead shorty stuff should trip almost instantly.

Older places with early generation breakers, have stuff that only trips thermally -- i.e. a dead short has to persist long enough for a thermal trip element in the breaker to heat up...which could be several seconds at many hundreds/thousands of amps depending on wire size and length.  Screw in fuses only blow thermally.

400 120v arcs don't have enough energy to be self-sustaining, so they tend to burn out once whatever close metal bits that caused the arc get vaporized away.

220v arcs are a different story.  I've seen 220v circuits where 18" of copper were flat out gone and the cable sheath pulled away like a snake skin.  It takes an arc persisting for a long time to vaporize 18" of copper.  The only thing that kept that place from burning down was the roof leaked bad and the beam the cable was stapled to was always wet, so it never got a chance to burn the joint down.

414 Now I think this last weeks events will be the downfall.

There's a few obvious take-aways for imitators.

-- choose a night time event so cams and bystander cellphone video won't be as effective, and your escape will be more effective.

-- sit tight after the strike.  Don't go full-tard and do something like a robbery and cop killing that'll draw unwanted attention.

-- preposition the bomb well before the strike and event you plan to hit, and choose events with less security.  Night clubs, theaters, high school football games, etc.  With a prepositioned bomb and a cell phone, you could generate a flash mob and draw the victims to wherever you prepositioned the bomb.

These guys were idiots posting jihadi videos and tweeting jihadi shit.

You could leave a "sterile" calling card though at each strike site so the authorities knew it was you.  That could be something completely untraceable like a plastic Solo cup or a torn in half dollar bill.  Eventually someone in LE would notice that pattern and realize it was you.

425 #413  PurpAv,  how do you know someone isn't already doing this?  We have enough unexplained disasters and accidents that someone could be doing sabotage,  and without an announcement of who is doing it you would never know.

They might be terrorizing some people in government,  but the rest of us are operating in blissful ignorance.

There's a cheery thought.  Good morning,  all!

Posted by: Miss Marple at April 22, 2013 02:19 AM (GoIUi)

426 how do you know someone isn't already doing this?

I assume some probably are.  Like with most ordinary criminals, we only catch the REALLY stupid ones.  The smart ones ain't getting caught.

Clever infrastructure sabotage won't even be recognized as such.  It can be made to look like materials failure, incorrect original installation, shoddy maintenance, etc.

With things like weather tight equipement enclosures, an innocuous 1/4" hole drilled in the cabinet would be all it takes.  Then water starts getting in, crawley insect critters start moving in, etc.  By the time the gear fails, the 1/4" hole looks aged enough that it'll be written off as a careless installer.

429 I have some personal experience with the enclosure thing.  Years ago a tree fell down and tore the electric service off the house I grew up in and I had to do new shit from the service weather head to main panel.

When I took the cover off the old meter, there were like about 2,000 freaking wasps living in there and shit was all corroded and ready to fail anyway if the tree hadn't torn it down.
