Shock: You Can't Keep Your Doctor, Either
— JohnE.

Call me a cynic, but I'm starting to think that this law might have been passed by an assembly of unscrupulous and duplicitous politicians with the help of an incurious and sympathetic media on a bed of outright misrepresentations and deceit.

UnitedHealth Group (UNH.N) dropped thousands of doctors from its networks in recent weeks, leaving many elderly patients unsure whether they need to switch plans to continue seeing their doctors, the Wall Street Journal reported on Friday.
I don't know about this Obama guy. I'm starting to think he might not be playing straight with us.

6 And The President keeps preaching about the many options to choose from, I'd like to see an article about about vast rural areas in this country with only one or two insurance companies providing plans. I got one, which of course means a very limited network, which means you better not get sick or injured any time you get 50 miles from home.

Posted by: Deathknyte at November 16, 2013 10:48 AM (lUzBA)

13 Yep. They are going to smaller and smaller networks, and many doctors are refusing to join. We found out that my husband's doctor isn't on any of the available HMOs, so it looks like if we want to keep him, we'll be buying a more expensive PPO. No word yet on my OB,but he would probably work out a payment plan with us if need be because he's super conservative and actually part of a lawsuit fighting Obamacare.

Posted by: Lauren at November 16, 2013 10:48 AM (hFL/3)

14 The downside to patients of smaller doctor networks is longer wait times and higher costs to see a specialist. The upside to the govt paying for this is longer wait times ... cause hopefully you die before your visit and the govt doesn't incur the higher costs. Bending the Curve, Baby!

50 from the previous post: What I can't understand is their complete internal shock and apparent lack of any gameplan to address a scenario that they knew was coming three years in advance. Did they just think people wouldn't notice? This, to me, shows the real incompetence of this administration. That they never even bothered to have a plan of attack to address a predicable (by their own estimates) and inevitable outcome is just incredible. People caught in this ideological trap are not important to them. Literally. They are simply the casualties of war to them. They don't care. The only people they care about are those that vote for them. This is such a dark time. And, I think they truly thought they could weather the storm because, hey, these are real or decent or good people (aka "democrats"), so the media will lock step in line and not cover it. Don't give those hurting a voice, and it is simply not happening. Everything is good. Conservatives are whining over nothing, as usual, yada yada yada...

67 Rush introduced the idea of eugenics being introduced into the bill. I wouldn't be surprised if euthanasia and more assisted suicide type stuff isn't stuffed into it somewhere. That is how it is in Canada. The elderly will get the shaft. I met an elderly woman from Quebec who needed a hip replacement. She was told she would have to take (major) pain killers for years, because the government did not want to cover two operations within her remaining life. They were told the replacements only last so many years, so she had to wait to get it done closer to the one replacement cycle of time. I really couldn't believe it. So, here we have a case where a woman is suffering every single day of her life - hard to get around, paid her (high) taxes for years (actually ran a family owned business), and was force fed dangerous pain killers every day for years because - universal health care/single payer health care. Socialized medicine does not care about the individual. And, they care less for the elderly.

Which is why anything that accelerates the dying of the elderly is regarded as a feature, not a bug. Why?  Because his boss may be forced to spend more time with his family if this debacle ends up tanking the entire healthcare system, which it just might.  Or somebody lets the cat out of the bag and it becomes evident to even the LoFos that this was all on purpose.

If Sheriff Joe is just as tainted, which he should be, things might become very interesting.  This has the potential to get much more uglier than we can imagine right now, kids.

94 United Healthcare is the AARP hospitalization plan.
It also includes their prescription plan, so not only will the elderly have to find a new doctor, new plan, but also a new Part D prescription plan.

Some of the states like PA that have low cost prescription plans are notifying United subscribers of other companies that will work with the state's plan. These are not Medicaid or Obamacare, these plans have been in effect long before Obamacare.  In PA, for example,  it's paid for by lottery money.

Right now it's renewal time for Medicare so companies have been inundating the elderly with all kinds of plan offers. This mostly affects Medicare Advantage subscribers although it could also affect some Medi-Gap plans.

"The same guy who just gave you healthcare with twice the premium, twice the deductible, and half the doctors you used to have wants you to believe he can get a better deal with the Iranians." 112 Excerpt from Sen. Ron Johnson's (R-WI) weekly GOP address this morning:

“President Obama’s so-called apology, was as phony as his fraudulent marketing of Obamacare. He seemed to be saying he was sorry Americans actually believed him, but took no responsibility for their plight. It was like telling someone you’re sorry their dog died, but refusing to acknowledge you ran over the dog.

“Sorry Mr. President, it didn’t work. Millions of Americans are coming to realize that those are your tire tracks on their cancelled policies. It is also obvious that you didn’t inadvertently misspeak when you promised Americans they can keep their doctors and health plans – and do it all at a lower cost.

“Those assurances weren’t slight exaggerations or innocent shadings of the truth. They were statements that were fully vetted, coldly calculated, and carefully crafted to deceptively sell your health care plan to a trusting public. It was a political fraud echoed relentlessly by House and Senate Democrats who should be held accountable for the disastrous consequences of their grand deception.

“Consumer fraud this massive in the private sector could – and should – bear serious legal ramifications."

113 And suddenly the adoring crowds began to realize that despite the Proclamation from Beloved Leader, chocolate rations being "raised" from 25 grams a month to 20 grams a month did not seem as satisfying.  Murmurs of discontent began to slowly spread among their midst.

Safely away in a private minaret, Beloved Leader closed his eyes and savored the comforting sound of the evening call to prayer, contemplating how sweet his legacy would be after delivering the key to the atomic bomb to his mentoring mullahs.

130 From the department of environmental nonsense comes ...

The consequences are so severe that environmentalists and many scientists have now rejected corn-based ethanol as bad environmental policy. But the Obama administration stands by it, highlighting its benefits to the farming industry rather than any negative impact.

Farmers planted 15 million more acres of corn last year than before the ethanol boom, and the effects are visible in places like south central Iowa.

The hilly, once-grassy landscape is made up of fragile soil that, unlike the earth in the rest of the state, is poorly suited for corn. Nevertheless, it has yielded to AmericaÂ’s demand for it.

“They’re raping the land,” said Bill Alley, a member of the board of supervisors in Wayne County, which now bears little resemblance to the rolling cow pastures shown in postcards sold at a Corydon pharmacy.

IIRC, CBO budget scoring is done under "ground rules" set by Congress, not rules established by an impartial outside review group.  So Mr CBO, if you like your job, and want to keep your job...

187 147 No, really, back when I was your age we could choose our own doctor, insurance plan, whatever, instead of them being assigned by The Government.

171  Exactly.  If I only have a choice between two restaurants, one that sucks badly and one that sucks worse, I'll eat at the one that sucks badly every time.

People who can't understand this little parable are probably not smart enough to understand any explanation I could give

190 I never expected to like anything that Bill Clinton said, but he did make SCOAMF panic.

Posted by: Carol T at November 16, 2013 12:04 PM (z4WKX)

191 Carol,  the media hides behind TFGs race as their excuse to cover for him.  They knowingly pushed him into office purely to have that excuse handy when they get caught.   Look at how they treated Clinton vs Bush.   Do not buy for one second that 98% the media is just scared of being called racist when they withhold facts or just reprint the lying talking points put out by this administration,  they are striving to hurry along the utopia they imagine full on socialism will be.

195 I don't know about that last one. The CBO found it to be deficit neutral. They always are right on with their estimates.

Do you believe they scored the risk corridor?

It's a multi-billion dollar hole in the bucket.

Sorry, amigo. It's bullshit top to bottom, stem to stern.

Posted by: weft cut-loop at November 16, 2013 04:01 PM (rSTkb)

I was being sarcastic! When has the CBO, other than the medicare expansion under bush II (which it was still wrong, came in under budget), been right?

Posted by: NWConservative at November 16, 2013 12:09 PM (M1gmo)

196 I posted an IBD editorial from late October here about a costly Medicare benefit that enraged senior citizens. Ir was repealed. That's the only thing to do with TFGcare, full repeal.

197 I have no patience for the dummies who claim they're shocked by this stuff. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have been warning of this for years. The only upside is that it looks like the entire country is going to be blessed with something akin to the VA health system. When that happens, there WILL be riots.

Posted by: Queequeg the Harpooner at November 16, 2013 12:11 PM (O7OxF)

198  How bad is United Healthcare? Ask anyone who has Tricare military health insurance which switched from Triwest to United Healthcare. Oh,and UHC notified doctors about not providing service back in July but are just now getting around to notifying patients.

Just search United Healthcare reviews complaints.

Honey, it's all about the bennies.  I lay around flat-backing for fun and profit while you work your ass off to pay me to smoke ganja, fuck like a mink, knock back booze, and enjoy the good life.

204 This guy doesn't know his ass from an outboard motor. His great policies have all either been effortless plays to his base, or written for him by others. He's gone along with that, and this time it's blown up in his face. Granny Rictus jumped on a panicked opportunity to run the table and the long bet has collapsed because no one had the opportunity to think it through or doubt their own invulnerability.

205 Prospect of Senate flipping next year is intoxicating. Zero gets to spend 2 years getting told FU. If that's what you're hoping, don't get them up too high. The current Republican "leadership" haven't demonstrated they have that kind of balls. When Obama's media lickspittles start attacking (and they will have a racial component), the Republican old guard will shrink back and slink away with their tails between their legs.

The elderly losing their doctor must be very stressful.  My mom who passed this year on Valentine's day at 100 years, loved her doctor and considered it a social event on her bi-annual visits.

I am thankful she doesn't have to witness this insult, and that sentiment is also applicable for my dad, a WWII pilot who would have been ready to "shoot the bastard down like we did the Japs."

211 First, individual plan holders couldn't keep their insurance.
Prices are going up, not down.

Now, You Can't Keep Your Doctor, Either!

Next thing we are going to find out is that ObamaCare had nothing to do with helping the uninsured get insurance - like it was just nothing more than a power grab of 1/6th of the entire US economy?

Can I at least have my own slave-physician that I can keep in a cage in the garage behind the cat littler, or will they make me share with the whole neighborhood.

215 Next up: the American version of UK's NHS Liverpool Care Pathway. THAT is very efficient at killing old folks.

"One patient under the LCP was 90-year-old Kathleen Vine.

Her granddaughters, Helen Bishop and Alison English, say the LCP was used as a justification for sedating Mrs Vine and denying her food and water.

"Nan didn't want to die, it wouldn't even have been euthanasia. So, as far as we're concerned, it would have felt to us as if our Nan would have been starved to death and killed," Alison said.

Mrs Vine was taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder, and a few days after being admitted she developed pneumonia.

"All I remember is they weren't feeding me. Up above my bed they put 'Nil by mouth' and I was begging for food," she recalled.

She said that when she asked doctors and nurses for food, she was ignored.

"I was being left to die. If it hadn't have been for my family I would be dead now. I would just have been another statistic on the books."

Her family were told she had 48 hours to live but when her granddaughters visited her in hospital they said she did not look like someone who was dying.

"Nanny was sitting up in bed and she was saying, "I'm really hungry, I'm really thirsty," said Helen.

"We were ushered into an office with five medical staff and told about the LCP and that Nan was very elderly and her system was shutting down and there was not a lot they could do. So they would withdraw the food and meds and let her go peacefully.

"We said, 'but she's got a dislocated shoulder, how can this happen?' And they were saying, 'She is very old' and we had five people staring at us and it was very intimidating," Helen said. . . .
