MSNBC Goofs on Romney's Black Grandson and Then Does the Fake Apology Bit

Melissa Harris-Perry and crew found the adoption mock-worthy.

AllahPundit summed it up well here. They really had no idea what was mockable about the adoption or the picture -- they were just certain that it had to be mocked.

[T]he interesting thing about this is that they put the photo on the air even though they obviously didnÂ’t have anything to say about it. Ostensibly itÂ’s comic fodder for Harris-PerryÂ’s panel of comedians to riff, but all they can muster is (1) hey, one of them looks different, (2) a Kardashian joke from MHP herself, and (3) a predictable dig at the GOP Â— which would have worked just as well as a dig at ObamaÂ’s 2012 campaign team, actually. ItÂ’s not that the photoÂ’s inherently funny or that a white family adopting a black child is wrong Â— imagine them reacting to a photo of Tom Cruise with his adopted son Â— itÂ’s that, I think, they felt they couldnÂ’t let it go unremarked upon that the GOPÂ’s last nominee seems happy to have a black child in his family. On MSNBC, racism is the only reason to become a Republican. TheyÂ’ve got to mock, even if theyÂ’re not exactly sure what theyÂ’re mocking, to delegitimize the inconvenient possibility that Romney isnÂ’t prejudiced.

I must point out once again that, despite the protestations of the media, despite its claims of professionalism, despite the belief of many in the media that they are "elite" in some fashion -- most cable shows are now essentially Televised Blogs. Melissa Harris-Perry and crew are just snarkin', because snarkin' is what the ADD audience loves.

It doesn't matter if no one can actually announce what it is, precisely, that they're snarking on; snarky-snark isn't really logical expression. That's not it's point. The chronic snarkster isn't snarking to communicate any particular idea, except for two very base, primitive ones:

1. We're Superior to This Thing We're Talking About, Whatever It Is, and

2. We Constitute a Tribe, You and I, Mutually Loyal To Each Other, Because We All Hoot and Grunt At the Same THings.

Gabe has written about this. In Hollywood fictions, as well as in alleged "news" stories recounted by the media, there are Designated Heroes and there are Designated Villains. Whatever the hero does is heroic not because of the intrinsic heroism of the action but simply because it is the Designated Hero doing it -- and thus the action is heroic, simply because he performs it.

Likewise, everything the Designated Villain -- here, the Romney family -- does is villainous. Not because adopting a black orphan is villainous, but simply because the Villains are performing the action, and you know they must be up to no good. After all, they're the Villains.

I'm not really "outraged" by any of this and I doubt people on the right are "outraged" either.

But there are several points to be taken from it:

1. As Ann Althouse notes, the segment directly following this one -- which Melissa Harris-Perry teases at the end of the clip -- is a round-up of allegedly "racist" statements. This segment is entitled "Hey, Was That Racist?"

I don't think Melissa Harris-Perry's Televised Blog snarking on the race of Romney's grandson is "racist" myself. But I am fairly confident that she would deem this sort of thing racist if someone from Fox were talking about a Democrat adopting a black kid.

By her standards, the "Hey, Was That Racist?" question is answered in the affirmative.

2. Despite their beliefs that they are elevated and enlightened, most leftists are exactly like most other people -- fairly crude and obvious in their thought, and frequently "offensive" when they're not watching their words carefully.

3. MSNBC is not a professional news operation. It is, as someone from Politico observed, "Animal House for lefties."

MHP has now kinda-sorta apologized to anyone who was "offended" (how they love that construction).

But while she apologizes for giving "offense," she makes no apologies for her own racism.

And yes, by her own standards, she is a racist. To speak of race cavalierly or flippantly or mockingly is racist, no matter what the context, is racist -- that is the standard she inflicts on others.

But she herself won't accept that standard for herself.

I don't blame her on that part of it. It's an unlivable standard. It is a punitive, vindictive standard which sets people up for failure and then condemnation.

And that is of course why she insists on that standard for others.

Here is my take on the Melissa Harris-Perry "controversy". Melissa is a proud African American woman. By definition, she's been raped three times every day of her life, first of all, because she's a woman, secondfest, because she's black, thirdadoodle, because she's proud.

It is worth noting hear that the word Year is depicted as female in most cultures while New is depicted as male. So "New Year" is depicts Year getting raped by New from behind. Happy? I think not.

As I alluded to in the previous thread, to be authentically Irish one needs to be raised by drunks. Similarly, to be authentically black one needs to be raised in an environement surrounded by terrifying figures in white hoods. There's no point in 'breaking the cycle' or any of that becoz then your people lose their quaint wholesomeness. 101 To me this MHP gal is a bigot in the broadest sense. She rejects out of hand anyone outside of her tribe. Romney's first offense is being a Republican. His second offense is being rich. His third offense is being white. But he's also not the face of the Republican party and certainly not the face of Conservatism. The fact that MSNBC feels the needs to pick on him or his family says more about them than it does about us. I was reading somewhere - it might've been Kruiser's twitter feed - about how conservatives should best handle this moving forward. I don't want to put words into Kruiser's mouth (and I honestly don't recall if his tweets were in reference to this particular "outrage"), but he seems to be falling on the side of "I'm not going to acknowledge the existence of these horrible people." While many others think the best thing to do is publicize them. I don't know which is the best thing to do, but I'm leaning toward ignoring the MSNBC folks (and similar chattering classes) and only unleashing my "outrage" on the Democrat party officials, politicians, and bureaucrats. But my fervent wish is that Republicans, and conservatives more broadly, reject the premise that we have to defend every single person who is identified as a "conservative" (or Republican) when they say something that the Left decides is an affront. For example, Joe the Plumber* as the initial incident - yeah, defend him and point to the hypocrisy of the Left. But I don't think Joe the Plumber should be someone who represents Conservatism. And if JtP messes up in his personal life or whatever today, I don't feel anything is gained by All of Conservatism going Eleventy in his defense. *Feel free to substitute JtP with whichever conservative symbol is the flavor of the week.

HOWEVER, he maternal grandfather had a last name that to the American eye looks "Hispanic." (It's Portuguese, actually, but close enough.) Thus, her mother's maiden name was kinda-sorta "Hispanic"-y. Then the mom married a WASP-y guy with a WASP-y last name. And they had a daughter (my friend) who grew up with that WASP-y last name. But when my friend was 15 years old, the parents got divorced. And soon it was time to apply for college. So my friend, at the age of 15 with total consciousness of what she was doing, begged her mother to revert to her maiden name, so that my friend could then also legally assume that same last name -- the sorta Hispanic-y one. Mom agreed to the scheme. Names legally changed. At the age of 16, my friend was re-born as a "minority" -- a Hispanic girl. And she played i to the hilt. Even though she knows nothing of Hispanic culture, even though her family did not identify as Hispanic, even though she was not perceived as nor treated as Hispanic by the world around her, she noow fully embraced her minority status, as irrevocably confirmed by her last name. She joined Hispanic clubs, took Spanish classes, etc., and most importantly, when she applied for college -- she checked "Hispanic" on the race box. And guess what? I t worked. She applied to Ivy League (and similar) schools and was accepted by several, even though her grades didn't really merit it, as basically an Affirmative Action admission. She was totally unapologetic about taking advantage of this. And from that moment onward in her life, she was played the "minority" card to the hilt, and quickly worked her way up the journalism ladder using that last name as a lethal weapon. She got hired and headhunted and stolen away by paper after paper, all of them desperate to get a "minority" on staff. She joined the Hispanic Journalists Society, and through that got a job at a top paper. She has no shame about this whatsoever. If racial preferences are handed out in America, then she's going to game the system. It's the one aspect of our relationship that is a real thorn in my side. I can't stand the moral corruption of it all, but I like her in every other way. She's just from that generation where pro-minority racial discrimination is part of the landscape, and to her it is not amoral to use that existing landscape to her advantage. Most people of her generation feel the same.

It's a racist scam, but at least it is better than reservations or something that regressive.

America is becoming less receptive to the Liberal cry. More than anecdotally, look at how the Left's domain of news organizations are taking it in the nuts economically and in viewership. Look at the trending anti-Statist sentiment expanding across the country.

So, yeah, grievances will be aired; and more are seeing them but looking past the Squirrel! because there's a stampede behind it.

Maybe if I were walking through the ghetto, I would think that, but I can't imagine doing it anywhere else. Plenty of white people are just as likely to hate me for being conservative and adopting a kid of another "race."

I grew up in Alaska, and went to high school where whites were a minority. I never encountered racism until I went to college in St. Louis. I couldn't imagine why the black kids sat at one table and the whites at another. Or why the black kids would choose to do so. I don't immediately have anything in common with another white person just because of my color, and I figure it's the same with black kids, but it was like some hideous unwritten law.

Guess I pissed 'em off when I sat wherever I felt like sitting.

That was my impression too. It's one thing to mock Miley Cyrus or the dunderheads at MSNBC or King Putt and quite another to mock someone, even someone you disagree with politically, for doing a good and honorable thing.

That is a beautiful baby, my goodness. Lucky Romneys. I think the MSNBC hosts have written off the baby as an uncle Tom or Oreo in the making, therefore, totes not above their criticism despite the age. That they still cannot let the Romney family go almost a year later is pathetic.

And about the Robin Roberts story...pics of her at the Daily Mail show that he partner is white, I believe. According to MSNBC mixed race "families" are mockable, so they SHOULD be pointing and laughing at her too, right? That one of these things is not like the other? Oh wait they can't because both the cancer and gay cards trump being black, so instead she is to be lauded and not derided as a race traitor. Am I getting this right? Lefty logic is painful, my head hurts now.

Ever since 9/11 various and sundry groups of so-called public service employees and their false idol worshipping followers have taken the liberty of designating themselves or those they know as "heroes" because they happen to work in the same profession as the first responders who committed truly heroic actions on that day. Those who throw the word hero around at will take away from the truly heroic actions of a very few individuals in this world that have earned that disignation. In fact, I don't think I'm too far off base in stating the most actual heroes would shun the title.cmdr
