— Open Blogger

The folks over at the Free Beacon were kind enough to put together a short clip of MSNBC's greatest hits of 2013.

4 Honestly, MSNBC gets more viewership on internet posts like this than they do directly on TV. Paddy Chayefsky was right. But he grossly underestimated what depths of degeneracy TV would sink to.

37 MSNBC is clumped with a few other news stations, so in the morning I will flip back and forth and occasionally watch for a few seconds.

There is a smug pomposity about them that I find irritating. They exude an aura of liberal invincibility: "the progressive agenda is the one truth."

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at December 26, 2013 06:12 AM (QFxY5)

38 On Friday, December 8, at 10:12 a.m., Roland James Smith, Jr., 51, a Harlem resident with a criminal record going back 30 years, walked into Freddy's Fashion Mart, a Jewish-owned clothing store at 272 West 125th Street, pulled out a gun, ordered all the black customers to leave, spilled paint thinner on several bins of clothing and set them on fire -- a fire that resulted in killing 8 people including Smith. Smith had been part of a group of picketers, led by Al Sharpton , head of the National Action Network and Morris Powell , leader of the 125th Street Vendor's Association, who had been protesting the eviction of Sikhulu Shange, owner of the Record Shack who was subletting from Fred Harari, the Jewish owner of Freddy's. The picketing, which had gone on for months, had led Harari to seek relief with the State Supreme Court. In papers filed just one day before the fire, he said, "Recently, the protesters have made motions of striking a match and throwing it on outside clothing displays or in the doorway of the store." An affidavit by Kareem Brunner, a black security guard killed in the blaze, said that he had been called a "cracker lover" and "would get mine as a traitor [to the black race]." Brunner, was the only black that Smith did not order out of the store before setting it afire. Besides Smith and Brunner, all the other victims of the fire were Hispanic and Guyanese. Store manager, Steve Brodsky, described how a particularly vicious demonstrator called Shabazz would force his way into the store, pushing Brodsky aside and shout "I will be back to burn the Jew store down -- burn, burn, burn." It has been reported that there is evidence that Shabazz worked for Mr. Shange. owever, the Jewish Action Alliance released copies of a tape containing speeches broadcast on black radio stations WWRL, WLIB and KISS attacking Freddy's, made by Sharpton and others during rallies going back to August 19, 1995. The tape was presented by Beth Gilinsky to the police and to the media, including the Jewish Post. Short excerpts from these tapes were printed in the New York Times, New York Post and Daily News. MSNBC= Al Sharpton. Case closed

39 34 Sharpton supposedly became a vegetarian. 45 Besides everything else that's wrong with MSDNC, what strikes me is their utter lack of a sense of humor. MSDNC hosts/talkers fall into two categories: Angry, spittle-flying demagogues (Tingles, Special Ed, the recently departed Bashir) and smug, arrogant talkers who think their eye-rolling act is funny (Maddow, Hayes, Kornake.) Switch over to FNC and you'll find humor on just about every show. The inherently unfunny hosts such as BillO KNOW they aren't funny, which is why he has the likes of Dennis Miller and Greg Gutfeld on so much.

Environmental groups urge Duke Energy to develop solar power farm in South Carolina

Hey this couldn't be just another case of newfangled religion ignoring economic reality.

Duke's response with the Public Service Commission says it would need more than 2,600 acres for a solar farm to generate as much electricity as the groups propose. Duke also says the solar farm would not produce as much electricity as the natural gas plant on a 20-acre site.

The Solar Energy Association says the largest solar plant in the United States is in Arizona and produces just under 300 megawatts of electricity.

Oh okay about 77,000 homes for just around 2 billion dollars... so divide-

2,000,000,000/77,000=25,974.26

25,974.26/60(because you have to rotate the solar innards every five years max)=s $432.90 per month minimum....

I find it so hard to believe that we, as a nation, are 17-120 trillion in debt with this sort of reality based economic acumen.

74 22 How screwed up is this POS? In all my years playing with this robust, mature 1970s-era technology (ANSI X12 EDI), I have never seen implementations that missed by this far. It is as if they intentionally avoided anyone anywhere that actually knew anything about ANSI X12 business processes, 100% by design. As part of one of the salvage teams, we were able to come in and build an 834 from scratch in about 2 weeks, something the prime hadn't been able to do up to that point (in several years of development). As far as the transaction life cycle and reconciliation/remediation efforts that all within ANSI X12 are familiar with (and live day in and day our), much of it is still not required for initial enrollment, so is literally still TBD. If someone had given me the task of ensuring this all failed from an ANSI X12 standpoint, I'm not sure I could have done as good of a job as some of these folks did. It's that bad. One highlight for any of us that were around for 4010 implementations...this is program-wide so not restricted to one or more states I may be actively helping. Remember the mind-boggling gap that was there when you fired off an 837 claim...and it passed all syntactical edits? You would then send back a 997 that said "this was great" (since the 837 was syntactically correct). Then you'd try to actually load the claim to your adjudication system, where it would bomb on one or more semantic edits (hey, this MD isn't part of our network, this insured isn't one of our covered lives, this procedure code isn't valid for this type of network, etc.). Everyone was standing around with an acknowledged 837 that they couldn't load - and there was no mechanized format available to transmit the "rejection" of a syntactically correct 837 back to the provider? This was eventually fixed by allowing the "unsolicited 277" or "277 claim ack"...but it was painful, and for many years the response docs were just as proprietary as the NSF/UB mess we were replacing with the 837s... Fast forward to 2013, they have completely and totally replicated this logic bomb within the 834 business processes. The exchange fires off a syntactically correct 834 to a carrier who says "yep, meets the requirements as defined in the IG and CG" - but then they try to shove the enrollment data into their membership processes (either rules engines or just normal member load functionality)...boom. And yep, we're stuck with Microsoft Excel to transmit the failures back to the exchanges. EDI is pretty awesome and very dependable shit, until non-EDI people get involved...sigh

75 hose signing up for private health care coverage on the ObamaCare exchanges may be in for an unpleasant surprise -- they'll have insurance, but they might have trouble getting the doctor to see them. As hundreds of thousands enroll for coverage beginning Jan. 1, analysts are warning that the plans are likely to give them access to fewer doctors and hospitals. So much so, they warn, that the system could begin to resemble Medicaid, the health care program for low-income Americans. "Indeed, I think this will eventually be like Medicaid," said Merrill Matthews, director of the Council for Affordable Health Insurance. Matthews said the only way many insurers are going to be able to control costs is by "simply clamping down on the amount they are willing to pay." Just as with Medicaid, analysts warn that if payments get too low, many doctors might start refusing to see patients. That will leave more and more patients jockeying to see fewer and fewer doctors. They emphasize, then, that having health insurance won't necessarily translate into access to health care. "About half of the physicians in many communities refuse to take Medicaid patients because the payment system is just too low," said James Capretta, of the Ethics and Public Policy Center. Doug Holtz-Eakin, former director of the Congressional Budget Office, suggested some of the plans on the exchanges are going in the same direction. You can bet your sweet ass that all that high priced "talent" at MSNBC have private health insurance. I mean where else did sharpton get that head job? (oops bad copy job before)

76 59 Wasn't there a post just last week that Fox drew bigger viewer numbers than the whole obama propaganda machine combined? Yes, but it's still a drop in the bucket compared to the audience for the networks, which is where the LIVs get their "news" (if they get any at all.) Our side needs to stop reveling in FNCs numbers so much.

78 On a semi-related note. One of my Lib brothers finally seems to be growing up and moving slowly more conservative. He's not there yet- not by a long way- but he's moving in the right direction. I was talking to Mrs. Tenther about it yesterday on the way home from his house, and realized that he's never had a job (besides low-level retail stuff) outside of government; neither of my brothers has. This brother's conversion seems to be based on finally having to sit on the other side of the (evaluation) table from teachers and slowly beginning to realize that most teachers aren't in it for the kids; they're in it for the paycheck. With that illusion shattered, small pieces of reality are starting to filter in.

84 It looks like I need to repost this from the abandoned thread here too:

"Crack mayor" is a fiscal con who has limited tax increases to the (imaginary) 1.5% inflation rate, cut spending by half a billion, ended or lowered city fees and brought city unions to heel, making him the best mayor I've known in Toronto in my adult life.

The leftist media especially the 9th-grade-level-written NYT wannabe, the Toronto Star, that was pissed off that their candidate, a married gay "ex" coke-head who lost $1-billion through incompetence trying to put the province's medical records onto a single database when he was a Liberal cabinet minister (where he was knows as Furious George by underlings over his violent temper) lost in a landslide to the not-quite-our-class-dear, overweight Rob Ford so they've been after him and his family since the day after the election.

BTW, the married gay mayoral candidate stage-managed finalization of the adoption of a black kid for the day of the election that, ha-ha, he lost; and recently his 'husband' went missing for half a day and was found wandering in a stupor (to coin a phrase) in a section of the city known for its crack houses---a story the MFM has shown surprisingly little interest in investigating. A MFM that has also been ignoring a Liberal mayor charged with massive corruption; the lesbian Liberal premier (the province's "prime minister") who is currently in a billion-dollar-plus scandal; and a Liberal former deputy minister of education for Ontario and close friend to the lesbian premier and the federal Liberal Party's leader, Justin Trudeau, who has been arrested for kiddie pr0n possession and creation.

117 80 There is no "pair" for the 834 that I recall, though. Correct. I come from the carrier world, so it was pretty obvious to me where the Grand Canyon-sized gap was within an hour or two of arriving onsite. I'm no rocket scientist. And there were people literally working on this stuff for years. Hell, I've heard rumors (cough) that there were even an entire set of volunteers within X12 itself who came up with an 834 guide specifically designed for exchange business (similar to the exchange-specific 820 transaction that we are or will be using). Evidently CMS wanted to do it itself, and so they took the base 5010 IG and "repurposed" stuff so that the subsidy and CSR amounts could be transmitted as free text.....yadda yadda yadda. And you know what happens when EDI stuff starts getting repurposed..especially when it's the regulator doing it. This onion is so large and we've really only started to peel layers. Wanna know the best part? Ponder this one - if an entity is having problems with sending/receiving "Add" transactions, guess how much focus they have given to "Change" and/or "Term" transactions. Yeah, all of these "enrollment" numbers are just numbers. Wait until someone needs to add or change dependents. That time bomb, it's a'ticking. Loudly.

We had pretty much eliminated those power outages during ice storms here by having an aggressive tree trimming schedule.  However, a combination of factors killed that.  One a lot of people did not want their trees trimmed and the power company figured out it was cheaper to let the trees grow and kill the power about once a year and fix it then.

We don't even do health care, but I'm scarred from previous EDI work (in general) that I'd rather just stay away. For something that works so reliably, EDI is a f*cking pain to actually "do." Mostly because the suits don't bother to understand what it's actually doing or how, so they always come up with "great ideas" for us to implement without bothering to ask us what such implementation would take...

We currently bury cables in new neighborhoods but burying them in already established areas is cost prohibitive. The last numbers I saw were about $1M/mile.

And burying cables has it's own unique failure mechanisms.  Mostly it is flooding of the ground level transformers during heavy rains.

The moment two companies have to pass data (on a regular basis) between themselves, you're using EDI. The only question is whether you're going to use a robust, well tested, and well proven methodology (X12 here in the US, EDIFACT in Europe), or .NET + XML. If it's *just* two companies, the .NET + XML works well enough... usually. But still doesn't work well if we're talking about big files. And it falls apart completely if we're talking about big files AND more than just two partners.

171 155 And it falls apart completely if we're talking about big files AND more than just two partners. Yep. If you're sending that *thing* to anyone, chances are you're also going to need to send it to a regulator (in the US). So, practically every single B2B requirement ever thoguht up falls 100% into that "might as well do it with EDI" camp. If I had to fly above this clusterfuck from 35,000 feet and give the "reason why" we are where we are - you basically hit it in a nutshell (and I don't claim to have all the answers since I've only been stuck within one of these projects since after 10/1 - very deliberately from a resume perspective...lol). Everyone looked at this exercise in terms of the customer facing website - so it all had to be realtime, all webservice based, all blah blah blah latest and greatest untested unproven technology, etc. If it had a color ad, the exchanges needed three of them, and STAT! At the actual end of every day that I've been around, what *really* mattered was a BATCH 834 transaction sent once per day (if we can ever actually get into production) to a set of carriers. Everything should have been done in that context, since that was the only "output" that actually matters.

192 Not sure what you are working on, Mr Flintsone, but it sounds like it predates SQL. The 834 X12 Transaction is the format used to send eligibility/enrollment information to an insurer. It has 3 different transactions (note the small 't'): "Add," "Change," and "Term." Add means just what it says- add a new person to a plan. Change means to modify their coverage in some way (usually adding or removing a dependent). Term means to remove the member from the policy completely. Virtually all 834 transactions are of the "Add" variety. We put more people on new plans than we modify or terminate. Especially with 404Care, where there weren't any policies *to* terminate or change. So if "Add" isn't working, it's a good bet they haven't even touched "Change" or "Term" at all- meaning here in about 3 - 6 months, there will be a whole new set of problems as people start needing to modify or even terminate their coverage.

Document Databases (of which NoSQL is a specific implementation) are fairly robust and proven at this point. IBM uses one in certain situations, as do both WOOT and Amazon. Most non-relational databases don't use XML. Inasmuch as they represent the data, they tend to use JSON, which is more compact. Again, there are some very successful very large implementations of non-relational (also called "NoSQL" or "Document") databases. So there's nothing wrong with the technology. It's just that, like any tool, it has correct uses and incorrect uses.

212 I had a nose-down-in-it tour of one of those showcase ANG Base solar farms that were mandated for Defense to pay for. The guts were protected by self-cleaning glass, and the propaganda officer (an old friend, but Following Orders) had been instructed to inform all who asked that they were expected to last over 20 years. You'd think they'd run out of electrons before then, no?

As an old glass man, I was unimpressed with how the weatherproof glazing was close enough to the ground to be covered with snow and ice for a couple of months a year, but hey. I think they're planning on a lot less snow soon.

So, divide the 60-month estimate by four to get 20 years, and you get an average of only $108/month. My problem with that is, I have a big house and my current average is about 20% less than that. Of course, our coal plant is being abandoned in place, the nuke plant is long in the tooth and has No Friends, and there's a gas Peaker Farm under construction, so once we get my average rate jacked up enough I'm sure the sunfarms will look good.

Because I've been Wrong All These Years. And now I Owe The World.

219 201 akula51, an imperious wave of His Hawaiian Hand will allow these people to see their doctors on 1/1. Yeah, it's also going to put Uncle Sam on the hook for paying for it - since most folks in the sanity-based universe have figured out you don't have to pay for coverage that starts 1/1 until late January. Thus we start down the track of bailing out the insurers (we won't have much choice). It's going to be a good day to be long on tar and feather futures.

231 an imperious wave of His Hawaiian Hand will allow these people to see their doctors on 1/1. Sure they'll be able to see their doctors. Here's what his Imperious Heinous hasn't considered- how are the *doctors* supposed to know that someone is covered? This is why conflating "Health Care" with "Health Insurance" is such a big f'n deal. Picture this scene. John Doe walks into his doctor's office on 1/3. He's been told that his insurance company has to pretend like he's covered even though a) he hasn't paid yet and b) he hasn't even actually made it all the way into their system yet. So he tells his doctor that he has brand new insurance from Aetna (to pick one) through the PP-Caca exchange. Dr. Doktor tries to verify insurance and can't (because Mr. Doe doesn't exist in Aetna's system yet). Dr. Doktor has two choices- make Mr. Doe pay up front (in full or in part) or just "accept" that Mr. Doe *will* have insurance, and file normally. If Dr. Doktor makes Mr. Doe pay up front, then (obviously) Mr. Doe *didn't* actually have insurance on Jan 1. He won't have insurance until his policy is actually issued. It will be retro-active to 1/1, but as far as Dr. Doktor is concerned, the payment for this visit will be between Mr. Doe and Aetna. If Dr. Doktor takes it on faith that the service will be covered, then he's screwed if it turns out Mr. Doe didn't really have insurance (for whatever reason- some people *will* claim that their insurance policy "just hasn't made it all the way through yet" when they never even enrolled). This is because Mr. Doe will (based on industry-compiled data) NEVER PAY. So which do you think Dr. Doktor will do? He'll have Mr. Doe pay up front- either the whole thing, or a fairly significant portion.

We have implemented a solution to that Allen as you noted - we have decided patients on NoCare will pay in full at time of visit. If payment comes through we will process a refund. Payments go in an escrow account. It's a GO at 0800 January 1.

237 we have decided patients on NoCare will pay in full at time of visit. If payment comes through we will process a refund. And as someone who worked at an insurer for several years, let me say that makes me *very* glad I won't be on PP-Caca. Most of the time those refunds come back just fine. But every so often paperwork gets lost, or there's just some problem in the Billing/AR/AP department(s) and they're... less than timely.

245 Part of his imperial wave will open up the Treasury to insurance companies (well, the 'good' ones). "Take care of it," he'll say, "and just send me the bill." It won't matter. That's the point. When Dr. Doktor sends the request for verification of Benefits to Aetna, Aetna is going to say, "Uh... who?" Aetna won't pay for it first and then get reimbursed. Now, that will help people whose enrollments have gone through and just haven't paid yet- they're the ones who the Insurance companies have been "asked" to pretend are covered 1/1. Anyone else, there's just no way. It would be like asking you to pay for a meal you not only haven't eaten, but might not receive in the first place.

So, I'll get the window replaced tomorrow morning for $200 out the door, which brings me to a total loss of ~$500. That'd buy ~1.25 cases of .223. Oh, well.

"I have lived through much, and now I think I have found what is needed for happiness. A quiet secluded life in the country, with the possibility of being useful to people to whom it is easy to do good, and who are not accustomed to have it done to them; then work which one hopes may be of some use; then rest, nature, books, music, love for one's neighbor—such is my idea of happiness. And then, on top of all that, you for a mate, and children perhaps—what can more the heart of man desire?" - Tolstoy

257 Christmas at the LazyR ( Used to be my router's ID- no longer ) was pretty subdued. I had to give my younger dog- Sasha, a Rhodesian Ridgeback-- back to Glynn county animal control where she had come from.

She was abandoned here last January & I adopted her- but she kept tunneling under my fence and running away. I live on a truck route. Two blocks away is a known trapper & killer of cats and possibly dogs. And there are rumors we have one or more vans full of Mexicans who steal dogs and use them in dogfighting rings.

It was the best I could figure out to do. She was a wonderful dog- loving and protective. But since I could not keep her in the yard given time she would have met an ill fate.

Cole-boy-- the late Miss Emily's Border Collie- keeps searching the yard trying to find her.
