I didn't know they had color photos in 1860. Or cars for that matter.

It was colorized in the early 20th century, by a precocious ten year old Ted Turner. It's obviously a Stanley Steamer, with optional body kit, and those new fangled rubber tyres.

39 My dad bought one in 1971 to replace my moms Covair death trap. It had no radio, AC or glove compartment. The floor was vinyl.  It was pretty austere even for the early 70s.

It was given to my brother and I when we were in high school ( 82-85). By then the floor pans were rusting out due to the Indiana winters. The accelerator had an exciting habit of sticking to the floor. Starting in the winter was a challenge so we always carried a screwdriver and a can of ether.

50 That's not a  Ford  becaue  Ford  didn't make a 327 in  '75,  the 327 didn't come out till  '76.  And it wasn't offered in the Bel Air with a four-barrel carb till  '77.  However, in  1975,   the correct ignition timing would be four degrees before top-dead-center.

Well Vic, I'm gonna have to turn that picture over to your HOA compliance dept. Grass exceeds HOA mandated maximum height. Openly carrying a deadly assault something or other. Smoking outside during the dry season, second vehicle not parked on an approved parking structure.

Miss Snitz from compliance will be along shortly to photograph all your HOA violations. With a swat team, since you're clearly armed, and thus assumed to be a dangerous blood thirsty lunatic.

Posted by: Sticky Wicket at March 14, 2013 06:50 AM (KESFj)

58 BTW, it is a 72 Maverick Grabber with  302 2BL with a 3 speed in a console. No A/C.  I have had it up to 135 (by tach) and the day I got rid of it just for old times sake took it up and pegged the speedo one more time.

And that's a Model 19 on the hip, 6" barrel.  Brother took the picture after we had just come back from shootin'.

Posted by: Vic at March 14, 2013 06:50 AM (53z96)

59 Then again, the Comet's hood protruded more over the grill, so maybe that's a '71 or '72 Maverick Grabber after all.

Posted by: Reno_Dave at March 14, 2013 06:50 AM (OL4L4)

60 I had forgotten, but I had a friend with one of them. I'm guessing it's a 70 or 71 model year. His was not a 302 and could hardly burn rubber.

I think you're right. The Mercury version had only minor changes from the Maverick, but cost more.

My dad bought one -- with the standard Six -- for my mother. It was a wretched piece of crap. He replaced it with a Chevy Monza -- not the Corvair, but the later small(ish) front-engine coupe -- which was even wretcheder. And rustier.

If he had bought a 302 Comet, I might not have hated it so violently.

113 I had a 70 Maverick with the 200 cid, 3 in the tree.  Great car.  No power steering or breaks.  Learned to steer, shift, smoke a cigarette in one hand, joint in the other with a beer between the knees.  Learn on one of those and you can drive everthing from a farm tractor to a Peterbuilt.

166 One day in '77 or '78, I took this beautiful girl to Santa Cruz in my '70 Maverick (I was too stupid at that time to realize that she looked at me as "just a friend").

Anyway, as we were driving back to San Jose on the winding Hwy 17 over the Santa Cruz mountains, I began to notice my brake pedal moving closer and closer to the floor.

By the time we hit the Lexington reservoir, I found that it was taking a pump of the brakes to get pressure.

Luckily, she lived close to the freeway, and by downshifting and some pumping of the brakes to come to a stop, I was able to get her safely to her apartment, and myself back to my dorm.

I never told her that a problem was developing, and just made normal conversation the whole time. Man, I was stupid.

The next day, I rode my bike to a parts store, bought a new master cylinder (the brake fluid had leaked past the push rod seal into the driver's footwell) and replaced it in the dorm's parking lot.

Never heard of that here in TX. A good cutting horse will cost you 10Gs easy, and then there's the fact that a horse is a walking bag of competing diseases. If you're lucky, they continue competing and your horse is fine; if you're not lucky, one of those diseases gains dominance.

I wanted to build a street rod, or buy back my '66 buick Gran Sport ragtop. '67 it was shortened to GS. Anywho, I spent 5 years restoring this 401/dual quad/powerglide red-black-black sled. At 55mph, you could punch it and get plenty of rubber.

Now, my brother gave me back my old high school, '79 CJ7 V8 Renegade. He put a 'glass body on it a few years ago, but the frame rotted away. So I'm doing a NEW frame up resto. I pulled a 360ci out of an old Jeep Grand Wagoneer and went nuts. Huge cam that's too big for gentle off roading  (Comp 292 magnum), roller everything, forged pistons, and upgraded from a 3 to a 4 speed.

It just came off the dyno at 416 flywheel HP! So, I got a fast light to light street racer, a crawl anywhere in 4-lo range, zombie/apocolypse, EMP proof, bug out screamer. And the only  thing more convertible is my bikes.

Roolbars make good long gun mounts too!

246 One day in '77 or '78, I took this beautiful girl to Santa Cruz in my '70 Maverick (I was too stupid at that time to realize that she looked at me as "just a friend"). That night I drove to her apartment and strangled her. ahhhh, memories

267 My second car was a 70, 71, and 74 Maverick. (The engine was a 74 straight 6, and the axle was from 70.) It had been converted to use a floor-mounted shifter for the three-speed. Yes, the (forest green, except for the primer brown fender) body rusted like anything, but you couldn't kill that straight 6 engine. It used to burn a couple of quarts of oil per week and I'd refill it every other week from the oil that had been changed out of my mom's Pontiac. I once put it in the ditch and drove it home from high school (about 10 miles) with a big gouge cut out of the bottom of the radiator and no coolant at all. The other Maverick I owned was my first car. It was light blue with a dark blue vinyl top and I got it from my sister, who moved up to a cherry red Pinto. Which is the vehicle that taught me about the dreaded words "timing belt". One of the neighbors had a four-door Maverick which was white, as I recall.

283 There was no jumping down your throat there.  I was responding that the fire myth of BS and it was cooked by shyster lawyers.

I also had a Corvair. The engine was a POS and if you ever let the rear end get around on you you would lose it.  But it wasn't unsafe like that asshole Ralph Nader made out.  Chevy should have sued his ass.

287 It's either a Mercury Comet or a Ford Maverick.  I had a 1974 Maverick, and this looks like a 72 or 73.  The bumpers changed in 74, I believe, and had rubber on them.  The thing rusted like crazy!

289 Guess I should read comments before posting!  OK - a 72 Maverick.  My 74 was yellow.  The interior was hideous - it had seats that were striped with a combination of lime green/white/black/pale green.   My favorite moment was when the entire exhaust pipe - muffler and all - fell off while I was cruising down the interstate.  I was deaf by the time I found a repair shop.

292 Testing.   Begin italics.    should not be italics.

More testing in an old thread.   Italics cannot be stopped!! []

trying another method with nothing between square brackets, as in:  []

294

This is out of control.  Italics carry over from prior post.  let us see what a b between brackets does     did you go bold on me?

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:39 AM (w7J/R)

295

Yep.  Stuck on bold italics.  Could be worse, stuck on stupid, I suppose.    Let's try a p between brackets. Plain?

so how does that look?

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:40 AM (w7J/R)

296 oh, goody.  Cannot. Escape. Italics.  Try u in brackets.       So, does that give underline?

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:42 AM (w7J/R)

297 Carry over to next post?

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:43 AM (w7J/R)

298

Try the italics icon in menu, starting here:   italics icon on   and here, italics icon off    continuing  here, italics icon off

299 So, killed the browser and came back in.  How does it look now?

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:46 AM (w7J/R)

Trapped. In. Italics.  Nothing Can. Save. Me.

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:47 AM (w7J/R)

301

THis is more typing.  What's with the <BODY> at the bottom.  HTML command?

HTML uses "<i> text </i>" text to turn italics on and off.

<i> text </i>

Posted by: Die Trying at March 17, 2013 09:49 AM (w7J/R)

302

So, if square bracket i turns it on, how about /i

  text turned off
