Nancy Pelosi: No One Should Be Deported Just Because They're In the Country Illegally
— Ace

Mark Krikorian says she hereby pronounces the end of immigration law altogether.

Her statement means that she -- and the Democrats, as she is their ranking House member -- believes that no one should be deported "just" for breaking immigration laws. Deportation can only happen, in Pelosi's view, in cases of violating immigration laws plus breaking what she might term a "real" law.

Nancy Pelosi recently told Telemundo (Spanish broadcast here) that violations of immigration law should no longer have any consequences:

“Our view of the law is that it — if somebody is here without sufficient documentation, that is not reason for deportation.”

This wasn’t just a verbal flub; her spokesman reiterated the point, saying her comment was merely “a restatement of her long-held belief that being an undocumented immigrant is not a basis for deportation.”

Nor can you write this off as just another moronic comment from the lightweight House minority leader. Rather, it’s simply an explicit articulation of the policy the Obama administration has been pursuing for five years, namely of making immigration violation a “secondary offense.” As an example of the concept, failing to wear a seatbelt is a secondary offense in many states, meaning that you can’t be pulled over by a state trooper for not wearing a seatbelt, but you can receive an additional fine if you’ve already been pulled over for a primary offense (speeding, for instance).

...

The implications are huge, and not limited to the tenure of this administration, since this is now the consensus Democratic party position. It means the substance of immigration legislation is irrelevant; John Boehner and Paul Ryan can stuff a million enforcement provisions into an amnesty bill and itÂ’s all just for show if being an illegal alien is no longer a reason to be removed from the country.

Indeed. So long as you get here, and do not commit a crime the Democrats consider deportation-worthy, you can stay.

Posted by: jwest at December 18, 2013 11:11 AM (u2a4R)

32 This position effectively means anyone who can sneak into the country can stay here indefinitely until/unless they're convicted of a different criminal offense.

It basically removes one of the ONLY deterrents discouraging illegal immigration.

If you want to say, that as a matter of enforcement reality, that the Federal gov't isn't really interested in chasing down illegal aliens and deporting them, that's one thing. . .and its effectively BEEN US immigration policy for decades.

But if you're going to forestall ANY possibility of deportation, then effectively there is no such thing as an "illegal alien" anymore. Might as well just open up the borders, because anyone who can sneak in will get to stay.

85 I remember there being one hell of a public debate about the new immigration law of 1965. Now, I don't read the details of immigration laws, but we have some lawyers here who could flesh this out: I strongly suspect that immigration laws, as amended, may agree with Madame P.

The penalty for being here "illegally" (without prior clearance) may very well be to be remanded to the custody (or "oversight," once you're released on recognizance) of an immigration-review process for further investigation. There have been some movies made about how unjust this is to the ahem "victims" and how nice they are, as, you know, people.

134 Thomas Sowell:

"Most laws are meant to stop people from doing something, and to penalize those who disregard those laws. More generally, laws are meant to protect the society from the law breakers.

But our immigration laws are different. Here the whole focus is on the "plight" of those who have broken the laws, and on what can be done to lift the stigma and ease the pressures they feel, so that they can "come out of the shadows" and "normalize" their lives....

On the other hand, if an ordinary American citizen breaks a law, no one cares if he has to live in fear for years — "in the shadows," as it were — worrying that his illegal act will be discovered and punished. No one bothers to come up with euphemisms to keep from calling what he did illegal."

Reagan and GWB guilty, too.

Oh, and Bob Mulholland? Californians know him pretty well. Bob was the dirty trick operative for the state democratic party machine for 30 years. His wife was a county supervisor for 20 bloody years.

Talk about political patronage, Bob's wife handed it out like candy. A leftist friend of mine received preferential treatment when he built homes on land zoned for agriculture - and - the kicker to that being, it was on land Jane Dolan-Mulholland had rezoned as Green Line boundary - no building or construction allowed.

"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague." Marcus Tullius Cicero

234 from an email I got today: Irony 1: “We are told NOT TO judge ALL Islamic supremacists by the actions of a few lunatics." BUT on the other hand… "We are also encouraged TO judge ALL Gun Owners by the actions of a few lunatics." Irony 2: The Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is proud to be distributing the greatest amount of free Meals and Food Stamps ever, to 47 million people as of the most recent figures available in 2013. Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us "Please Do Not Feed the Animals." Their stated reason for the policy is because, "The animals will grow dependent on handouts and will not learn to take care of themselves." Thus ends today's two lessons in irony.

Which has both good points, and bad points.

If you have a spread in rural Italy, you may well end up having to deal with outfits like the Camorra showing up in the middle of the night and dumping a few thousand drums full of very nasty toxic industrial waste onto your property.

However, as rickety as it was, the m203 SAW was a very deadly weapon, and as you say, controlling one's burst was easy to do, if you knew how to handle it.

267 "Israel. Most folks speak decent English. Warm (except for this winter), great nightlife in Tel Aviv and Eilat. Far from perfect though. Semi-socialist, surrounded by screaming savages and constantly under threat of annihilation."

I spent enough of my life during the Cold War years constantly thinking about blast effects and fallout every time I was near a big city that I am in no hurry to do that again.

Israel is so small that if the balloon goes up with regard to Iranian nukes (said nukes being at this point in my view a _fait accompli_), there will be no place to hide with any hope of survival.

The USA is at risk too, much more than Joe and Jane realize, but the USA is big enough that you can find places within it that you won't worry overmuch about a rogue-state nuclear attack.

268 250 Someone upthread mentioned the country of Niue so I took a gander at Wikipedia. Interesting factoid for Niue: The Internet TLD (top level domain) is .nu Another interesting fact: the tiny island nation has shitloads of powerful fiber-optic cables running through it, far, far more than the citizens could ever use. So they rent them to offshore phone-sex companies. Provides a big boost to the economy. It may be a Christian nation, but they're capitalists after all. Until recently there was only one flight a week, from New Zealand. So you couldn't stay less than a week because there was no way to leave. But I hear there's now a second, mid-week flight. I read a travel book where the writer inadvertantly drove the Niue chief of police's car back to his hotel from a bar (it looked just like his rental, and the crime rate is non-existent, so everyone leaves their keys in their car.) The chief of police just came to the hotel the next day to switch cars, laughing about the incident. The writer was like, you can steal the police chief's car here and not even get in trouble. Because...there's nowhere to go. They could have just gone to the airport on flight day to find him if they needed to.

277 I agree with Nancy, only egregious violators of common human decency should be subject to deportation, nor should we restrict deportation to non-citizens, but to all those who plague this country with their continued presence within it's borders.
To that end Nancy should be first in line to be deported.

282 Ace sez: [W]hen someone guesses "This will appeal to other people," their first guide is what will appeal to they themselves. I.e.: Projection. Nancy Pelosi and her party don't see what's different between an immigrant that comes here legally and one that comes here illegally, whereas most conservatives see a big difference between people who want to be Americans vs. people who want to be foreigners living in America. What it comes down to, I think, is that Pelosi, et al, have no interest in being Americans themselves, aside from enjoying the perks of residency, and see no problem in others who feel the same being here and crowding out those who feel differently. Abiding by laws, protecting the Constitution, valuing freedom, etc. is just a fashion choice as far as they are concerned. No big deal worth getting deported over.

They already have. 9/11

And just recently the Boston Bombers.

Conservatives need to call them on this shit, but unfortunately there's a strange strain of libertarian thought on our side that somehow:
open borders=free enterprise.

They never seem to realize the next step is a bloated welfare state exploding with 20 million new members of the Free Shit Army.

Actually, it is now my considered opinion that if, in fact, some folks of the "furriner persuasion" manage to make it across the border (any border, doesn't matter, just pick one...or maybe more?...) into these presently-united (more or less) States - unless and/or until they commit some actual heinous offense (such as killin', rapin', advanced mopery or, say, running successfully for Public Office) - should they encounter some Public Official (elective or appointed/anointed/crowned/etc.), Law Enforcement-type or similar, be allowed to wend their way further along Life's Path without being unduly distressed by the Tragedy Of Deportation - instead, however, any and all aforesaid Public Official, Law Enforcement-type, etc. should be immmediately (or sooner) deported - forcibly, if at all possible - out of these-here presently(somewhat)-united States across the border of the nearest proximity...

Why, might you ask, this harsh and precipitate action upon the personage(s) of Public Officialdom, Law Enforcement-type-dom, et al such ilk, yet not the "undocumented ingressors"?

Simple enough: Yon unlawful immgrators have - despite some marginal problems, scofflaw-wise, and certain contrary evidence that some would submit, at least the POTENTIAL, in large part, to become, and even remain mostly in good standing as, U.S. citizens in behavior and productive, tax-paying and mostly-law-abiding in basic nature.

Whereas, based upon their behavior before, during and (given the opportunity) after the fact of their non-enforcement of the immigration and naturalization rules and regulations of these now presently(perhaps temporarily)-united States, plus their self-admitted mental attitudes and often-enough behavior otherwise, those aforesaid Public Official-folk, Law Enforcement-type-kinds, etc. & so-on DO NOT demonstrate ANY such potential to any useful extent.

Thereupon - it seems like a Good Tradeoff to me...

What say you?

"Are the Dems really this stupid? When the masses realize we are no longer a nation of laws, but of men -- they DO realize how it ends for them, don't they?"

They have been so insulated by the media from the consequences of the lies they tell and the outrageous statements they make, that they have, indeed, become a bit stupid.

And Princess Nancy has always kind of been standing out in left field holding a tennis racket. I think this statement may come back to haunt her and the Democrats a bit. It's too perfect not to be used in TV ads. Perhaps coupled with some Obamacare pratfalls, with a tone of "You're really going to blindly pull the lever for these absolute idiots?"

288 1. Being in the country illegally should not relate to deportation. 2. Veteran troops benefits cut so there's more tax money to waste padding the whims of the Brass. And 6000 National Guardsmen terminated from the ranks so as to buy tie-ins to the movie Superman. 3. U.S. Army seeks removal of Lee and ‘Stonewall’ Jackson from memory. Revisionist history would remove portraits of Confederate legends -- Washington Times http://tinyurl.com/n5vn5tx /and as Hillary said of history, it happened a long time ago and so what difference does it make at this point? ...because the US has always been authoritarian; there never was any US Constitution and Bill of Rights. If there had been, we'd be enjoying them today. We're not, so forgetaboutit.

291 I love that old country song "Drop Kick Me Jesus Through The Goalposts of Life". Now if I could just tee up Nancy Pelosi's ass on say Alcatraz, I'd drop kick her through the Golden Gate--maybe as far out as the Farallones, and we'll see if she can swim home. There are a lot of great white sharks around the Farallones, but they'll leave her alone through professional courtesy.
