14 He's an average player toward the end of his career. This probably bought him 4 more years of playing time and a couple million in endorsements. The courage of a hero for sure.

22 I stopped following the NBA when the players no longer had any fundamentals or morals.  Willis Reed, Dave DeBusschere, Walt Frazier, Earl Monroe...  Those were the days.  Pau Gasol would have been the 12th best Center in the League back then.

Actually pretty good article.   Seems like a good guy.

Interesting that he has a twin brother who's straight.   Pretty good evidence for the argument that homosexuality is a genetic predisposition and not a question of nurture.

Also interesting that he's at the end of his career.   Does he get a spot on a team next year?   Or, more likely, will TNT or ESPN offer him a contract to do some TV work?   If he was interested, would they dare turn him down?

Other than that, I agree with:  Meh.

But maybe the sense that this isn't that big a deal is really what makes it a big deal.

As I said in the last thread, NBA players all run around on the court playing grab ass anyway.

what with the butt slapping, hand holding, jerking off in a big circle while the coach is on his knees with a clipboard, the "dunking", the "free throws", the "charging", the double dribbles, the fabulous warm up sweats, the takin' it to the hole, shootin the pill, palming the ball, fist pumping, the glittery gold shoes, drinking a collins, and "3 pointers", I'd say the whole league is gay.

This shouldn't count, but the press will scream that it does. The guy is a no-name, 12th-man, 13th-year journeyman whose career was likely over after last year.  Coming out now is functionally identical to coming out AFTER his career- if anything, it might convince a team to pick him up next year (if only to avoid the argument that teams are homophobic for NOT hiring a no-name, 12th-man, 13th-year journeyman).

Collins always seemed like a good guy, he's clearly a good writer, and I wish him well.  But this is a mousefart of a story that will be exploded as being bigger than it is.  Wait until there is a mid-career *starting* professional athlete in the big three sports coming out, THEN we'll have a story.

127 Coming out of the closet — to be straight After 12 years and two children, Julie Cypher leaves Melissa Etheridge, claiming that she’s not gay and she never was. Melissa throws up her hands. Many lesbians, understandably, are outraged. Not gay? After years with a same-sex partner? Who is she trying to fool? Herself, perhaps. And perhaps not. At the age of 28, after eight years of dating women — that is, never having dated men — I realized that I wanted to be with men. And that, in fact, I had never wanted to be with women — not sexually, anyway. http://goo.gl/XeXW5

154 It’s a no-brainer that (homosexuals) should have the right to marry, but I also think equally that it’s a no-brainer that the institution of marriage should not exist. . . . Fighting for gay marriage generally involves lying about what we are going to do with marriage when we get there—because we lie that the institution of marriage is not going to change, and that is a lie.

The institution of marriage is going to change, and it should change. And again, I donÂ’t think it should exist. And I donÂ’t like taking part in creating fictions about my life. ThatÂ’s sort of not what I had in mind when I came out thirty years ago.

155 Ok...I had to delurk to address this crap sandwich. I have a feeling this "announcement" by him is a way to but pressure on NBA players to accept the homosexual agenda, especially within the black community. The black community, specifically the black churches, are always attacked for being homophobic. Here's the thing, there are several gay players in the NBA and the players know who they are. But those that don't agree with that lifestyle choice, yes I said lifestyle choice, are being ostracized by David Stern and the media if they speak out against it. Just look at the WNBA! Anyway, watch the crap flow from this announcement. And really, who cares since Jason Collins was never a dominate center...just a seven-footer who could fill space.

You would kind of need to know that before announcing that this anecdote points toward a genetic tendency toward homosexuality. Even then, it's one set of twins, and not the whole story. Left-handedness is highly genetic, but not seen as often as you might expect among id twins. Theory is that mirroring in infancy, position in the uterus, and even varying bloodflow (when twins have separate placentas, as id twins sometimes do) may impact all sorts of neurological developments.

Fighting for gay marriage generally involves lying about what we are going to do with marriage when we get there—because we lie that the institution of marriage is not going to change, and that is a lie. The institution of marriage is going to change, and it should change. And again, I don’t think it should exist. And I don’t like taking part in creating fictions about my life. I don't quite understand... Is this like, "I've 'evolved' on being Proud.  Before finding my pride, I was confused and embarassed."?

Being 'hetro', I'd be more likely to stand up for my 'pride'--if I got a little more action.  Now, I spend most of my free time sulking.

288 I'm middle class. Yet my taxes went up, my health insurance premiums have gone up, it's costing me an extra $1300 per annum, they promised it wouldn't happen but it did andÂ…LOOK! GAY SQUIRREL! HOW ADORABLE! OVER THERE! ARMED SQUIRREL! UNDOCUMENTED SQUIRREL! Oh why won't someone DO something!

O/T @ 292If Tebow renounced Christ and celebrated his gayness, he'd have no problem getting a contract in the NFL. Hell, the JETS would probably take him back.

Interesting that he has a twin brother who's straight. Pretty good evidence for the argument that homosexuality is a genetic predisposition and not a question of nurture.

Who is this moron?

Oh, wait.   That was me.

I guess if I were trying to salvage some dignity I'd note that the story isn't good evidence for either genetics or upbringing as the causal factor in homosexuality, since his identical twin brother would have had the same genes and the same upbringing.   Which leaves personal choice.

On the other hand, perhaps "meh" was the smarter call on this one.

298 "Interesting that he has a twin brother who's straight. Pretty good evidence for the argument that homosexuality is a genetic predisposition and not a question of nurture." How does that make sense? If they share, in some cases, 100% of genes, and one is not gay, how could it be proof that it's genetic if one is homosexual and the other is not?

299 I just don't understand why there should be pride in the fact as to what hole a man likes to stick himself into. Where is the accomplishment in that?

303 I think this is a tribute to how narcissistic our society is becoming. Gone are the days of achievement, pride, and recognition based on hard work and honing of skill. Here are the days where you can take pride in giving in to any particular vice. One only needs to look at the Anthony Wiener debacle. It's almost as though it's better to give in to whatever your personal struggle is.

311 When you're a Yet,
You're a Yet all the way
From your first cigarette
To your last dyin' day.

When you're a Yet,
If the shit hits the fan,
You got brothers around,
You're a family man!

You're never alone,
You're never disconnected!
You're home with your own:
When company's expected,
You're well protected!

Then you are set
With a capital Y,
Which you'll never forget
Till they cart you away.
When you're a Yet,
You stay a Yet!

313 I have a hell of a lot more respect for gay and lesbian celebrities and athletes who have privately gone about their lives without feeling like they have to announce, rant on and demand acceptance for their own sexuality. Some of these private gays/lesbians have even managed to keep their dignity about the matter when other politically-motivated individuals tried to out them or spread rumors. Heck, I don't even like straight people who do this! Do any of us need to broadcast our sexuality? I mean, those who do usually are the ones who are insecure about it really. BTW, I truly believe choosing to have sex with male, female, critter, or object is simply a choice. You either choose to have sex with someone or something or you choose not to. Uh, there's such a thing as self-control. It's a choice. Bottomline. Humans can find themselves aroused by just about anything if they try hard enough. . . so let's just quit with the crap about it not being a choice. We've got people around us aroused by violence, shoes/feet, dung, dolphins, horses, sticks, sculptures, certain voices, blow-up dolls, robots, psychological games, etc. I mean, come on. . . it's a choice in the end to ultimately act on an instance of arousal. And yeah, I don't hate on gays. I think homosexuality is just one of many immoral things that humans do.

NBA? Never heard of it.

I see he plays for the Washington Wizards. I live in DC and I have never heard of this guy. So, I can assume now that the sports networks & MSM will go all in with masturbatory fury in support of this guy that nobody has heard of? Great. Just great. Homosexuality has gone from the love that dare not speak its name to the love that won't shut the fuck up. Stop it already.
