NBC's Ratings In the Crapper, As Usual

via @benk84's excellent news-fest, NBC continues to be America's lowest rated network.

NBC, after being heartened by some long-sought success this past fall, has fallen into a deep midwinter freeze.
The network has badly stumbled recently, hitting its three lowest viewership levels for a traditional television season in the past four weeks, the Nielsen ratings company said. The only exception came the week NBC televised the Pro Bowl.

Yet the depth of NBC's recent troubles has to be disheartening.

Thirty-three other broadcast programs had bigger audiences than NBC's most-watched show last week, "Dateline NBC."

I keep saying: Let's hang this admiral, to encourage the others.

I have to make one exception: Daniel Knauff (I think that's his name) is doing a Dracula series for NBC, filmed in London (I think) with Jonathan Rhys Myers*. He's actually a conservative and has said so on-line and has caught grief for it.

So I'd break embargo for that.

But otherwise.... I don't know why Limbaugh and Levin don't start echoing this idea.

A complete (except for Dracula) embargo of the network.

A shot across the bow for all others.

Let them know what can happen when you push us too far.

* Not Jonathan Rhys Davies like I wrote, who was Gimli and Sallah and would not make for a very good Dracula.

I tell every woman I know that they should stop watching today show and turn on something else (fox and friends if they ask). About 5% have switched. I keep after them though. Relentlessly. Especially when they complain about something they saw on Today.

Oh, I mentioned the other day that I finally got around to watching Chronicle and holy hell was that good. It may be one of the very few times that the found footage conceit worked to improve the story.

So I confess to watching some Chicago Fire, cause one of the guys on the show is hawt. But the huge problem with it is how they have to shove every liberal canard down your throat every episode. For example one episode had the firefighters and a teacher complaining about the city health insurance plan. Now, there is a lesbian couple who is being sued for custody for their baby by the one woman's husband (who she abandoned when she was 9 months pregnant to get back with her lesbian lover). I will lay out good money that they spin it as lesbian women being oppressed.

57 OK, so I'm looking at primetime cable news ratings. Hilarious stuff. I looked at Monday and saw these numbers for CNBC primetime going through the roof, nearing FOX. Then I saw it: "DOG SHOW" Ah. Piers Morgan loses to Dr. Drew (on the supposed secondary HLN) easily on the demos and just barely ekes him out overall. CNN generally does about 60% of MSNBC which does about half of FOX's numbers. Do you know what really crushes the competition? Fox and Friends. They do about 180% of Morning Joe's 25-54 demo and about 250% of the overall rating. I can't stand the show, but we talk about Morning Joe all day long and it's almost irrelevant. Well, they do crush CNN's morning show, so there's that.

I start at channel 500, scroll till I see something interesting, and click watch. I had to check just now to know I'm watching the Big 10 Network. I don't know about that, but someone here yesterday was hating on the two guys in the Sonic Drive-In commercial. I kind of like them for some reason. They seem good natured. GE's businesses all have government contracts or depend on government contacts to be profitable. Comcast depends on the general population as their customers thus they probably will be more concerned about not pissing off half of their potential customers.

But it's skewing more old than it did a few years ago. It's losing ground. Still #1 on cable overall, of course. Demonization works.

If you have cable or satellite, you pay for MSNBC and CNBC. NBC/Universal charges each carrier a fee for each subscriber to whatever package their channel is on. ESPN gets about $5 a month per subscriber while MSNBC and CNBC get probably about $0.15 per customer.

Sports is THE big business of television.

223 It would be easy for me to 'boycott' em. I still grab Meet the Depressed once in a while because it is important to keep an eye on the enemy's movements. But I don't watch anything else there and for that matter avoid all of NBCU because they took the HD feeds away from my HD HomerunPrime. SD sucks. Paying for 'Free HD' and not getting it sucks harder.

So lets burn NBC down to the ground, good riddance. But don't think the other will learn, they know they are making decisions that are causing their decline and don't care. Politics trumps everything, even survival. They figure the government will subsidize em when things get really bad.

And forget a conservative alternate network or buying out one of the existing ones when they get in enough trouble. Can't happen, would never get cable carriage. While most systems will keep CurrentTV's feed after it changes, they would drop a conservative switching network or station in a heartbeat. You couldn't even pay for carriage like the damned shopping channels do. The only reason FNC is on is Fox has enough other lib channels and more important, sports nets, Murdock can leverage em.

Darned tootin' they do. If you have a cable company DVR they know when you record, when you playback. They know which commercials you skip, what parts of the show you rewound for a second look. They are in your living room.

I use a MythTV so they only know what I recorded, they don't know when or if I playback. And for that (and it being opensource and unable to promise to honor kill bits, no copy bits, etc.) I don't get 'premium' programming. And 'premium' is being defined downward on a regular basis. Chiller & Oxygen SD are now 'premium' along with all NBCU HD programming other than the two broadcast NBC stations I get.
