New GOP Messaging Tactic: Be Like Buzzfeed?
— Ace

I've suggested this sort of thing for conservative media. I'm not sure it works for the party itself to do this sort of thing, but I guess we'll see.

What do cat pictures and GIFs have to do with Republican politics? Not a whole lot, at least right now. But beginning next week, that'll change.

Staffers at the National Republican Congressional Committee are finishing up a site redesign that'll likely be rolled out this weekend. The new NRCC.org does away with all the typical features of a political website, emulating instead the style of the Web juggernaut whose top headlines currently include "10 Easter Bunnies Straight From Hell" and "14 Photos Of George W. Bush Touching Bald Men's Heads."

Yes. The committee that elects Republicans to the House is taking BuzzFeed's advice to heart... by copying BuzzFeed itself.

"BuzzFeed's eating everyone's lunch," said NRCC spokesman Gerrit Lansing. "They're making people want to read and be cognizant of politics in a different way."

Buzzfeed had previously offered just this advice to the GOP. (And that's not actually an overly-snarky bit of Advice Trolling, either: Much of it is not-so-bad messaging advice.)

Previously: I think I've got this incident in mind: Then-RNC-chair Michael Steele titling his blog "What Up?"

Soon after it was not titled "What Up?" He got a lot of grief for it.

There's always a problem when an organization which is basically un-hip (and should be un-hip) tries to be hip. It often looks pretty silly and contrived.

Nah, the GOP has a brilliant tactic:

Tell their evangelical social conservative base (that more than negates the ENTIRE fucking black and "latino" vote) to go fuck themselves and accept all this commie pinko shit;

AND AT THE SAME TIME JOHNNY, WE'RE NOT DONE!!!

Step 2 is to legalize millions upon millions of fucking democrats, give them citizenship and their voter ID card.

15 I dunno if GOP messaging and pop-culture mix as well as democrat messaging does.  Conservatism is mostly an intellectual argument while the dems just push emotional pap, which sits better side-by-side with "weird, wild and snarky" news.

btw, yesterday I stumbled onto a Buzzfeed picture-article on "24 signs you went to a Catholic school". It started out "heh" but by the 7th example the piece ended up as just a nasty screed against Catholicism.

To be fair, Buzzfeed doesn't make people WANT to read    about politics.      It     gives people   pictures and shiny colors that expose them to politics.  There's a difference, and it's an important one.    If the 'pubbies really want to take this   Buzzfeedism to heart, they need to do it behind the scenes.     An   RNC-branded    site similar to Buzzfeed would fall on the ash heap of history faster than the Coffee Party.

Personally I can't stand Buzzfeed's political "reporting," but hey, I'm not a mouthbreathing leftard like most of this country.   Different strokes, etc.

I mean seriously, do these fucking idiots at the GOP even know who there base is.   EVANGELICALS (extremists, I know) COMPLETELY CANCELELD OUT THE MINORITY VOTE.   Completely.

That's a big fucking deal.  And yet, rather than trying to address how they can build off the only fucking base that they have, the GOP is floundering about going after those fiscally sound homos instead of having one constant, consistent message.

It is beyond idiotic.  Limited government and the respect of our traditions, culture and individual freedom ANSWERS ALL QUESTIONS.

40 I like this approach. But it can only work if people who actually have a clue implement it. If you have this plan executed by a team of consultants, like the ones who built ORCA for example, it will blow up in their faces.

Obama used social media effectively not because he or the DNC knew what the fuck social media could do. It worked because they hired and partnered with people who did.

It's too high brow to be effective on a mass scale. You need the "Beyonce's Latest Shoe Designer" types of stories to bring in the LIVs. NR's more like "Meet the New 1st Villon of the Symphony" type articles. Nothing wrong with that of course. But if you're reading that article chances are you're already pretty attuned to politics.

The problem with conservatism is that you're trying to personal responsibility, hard work, morality and other ideas that simply aren't fun.

The Democrats are the party of drugs and sexual abandon with no repercussions because the government will take care of things for you.

The Republicans in a BuzzFeed format is Bob Dole talking about the Viagra he pays for himself so he can have sex with the same woman he's had sex with for decades.

Posted by: Ian S. at April 08, 2013 01:54 PM (B/VB5)

We have to be evenmore subversive than that.  This is the time for someone with deep pockets to buy a floundering    organization   with an established name,   take it over, and    start filtering conservatism into its messaging.   And I don't mean a corporation like the New York Times.   I mean    something completely outside the political sphere.      A   videogame    company.    A humor website.   A    publishing company that specializes in cookbooks.   ANYTHING.

The most important thing to remember duing this takeover is to make sure politics and ideology are NEVER mentioned.   Just make sure that the people who get hired, the products that get released, and the    content produced      are    of a conservative bent.         In other words your first videogame release would NOT be    "Atlas Shrugged: the Video Game."    It would be "Bang! Zap! Zoom!" a first person shooter with a hero who just happens to be named   G. Jalt,    whose      mission is to take revenge on all the people who have taken advantage of his generosity over the years.

"They took from him for twenty-five years.   Now he's come to collect   what they owe,   in money or blood."

This is why, as much as    I admire Glenn Beck,   Blaze TV    can only    get   us so far.    If you want people to start paying attention to overtly conservative media, you have to start hitting them covertly first.

126 The overarching problem for the GOP is the "next in line" attitude. Not just for presidential nominees but for everything within the hiearchy of the party. Put your time in and eventually you get promoted to a leadership position, regardless of whether you're effective or not.

Dems do this a little, but in general it's not the SOP. They bring in people who know what they're doing in a specific area. And if it's a 25 year old running the social media campaign of a presidential campaign, so be it. On the RNC, this would never happen. Which is why you have 50 year olds running it, with the results we had in 2012.

There's a Japanese TV station that has one that's a sphere with motors and fans inside it that floats around with a camera - and has for years.

With the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend.  As a grocerÂ’s daughter who rose to become BritainÂ’s first female prime minister, she stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that canÂ’t be shattered.  As prime minister, she helped restore the confidence and pride that has always been the hallmark of Britain at its best.  And as an unapologetic supporter of our transatlantic alliance, she knew that with strength and resolve we could win the Cold War and extend freedomÂ’s promise.

173 We need politicians who want to hold political office, to vote for conservative policies, and overturn liberal, progressive and socialist policies. We need them to say that, and we need them to stick to that. Regardless of PACs or morning shows or polls. That isn't going to move even 1% of the electorate away from Democrats. What it is going to do, though, is shore up a base of conservatives. It is going to make common citizen voters proud to vote for conservatives. It will make them glad to say they represent the politician. They are glad to go vote for them. That is going to sell conservative politicians and move the poll numbers. What we have now is a bunch of politicians who aren't so convinced the Democrat agenda is a bad thing. Conservatives are pretty much defined by their conscious rejection of pro-Democrat pressures in life, and we aren't sold on these politicians. We aren't glad to vote for them, and we're not going to brag to family and friends that they deserve to run the country. We object to dirty tricks, but that's not closing the sale.

177 Oh, there was a lot of talk in the MSNBC thread about the Tragedy of the Commons.

The lefties love to cite this as an excuse justifying the government taking over whatever the left deems as "commons."

Problem is, the government today is exactly and precisely the definition of the Tragedy of the Commons: We have nearly every identifiable group seeking to exploit the government for their own gain because the costs for such gains falls on everyone.

Our government today--city, county, state and federal--is so overburdened by rent-seekers, profiteers and exploiters that the common good of a government has been completely wasted and ruined. Everyone is stealing from the system because they know "someone" else has to pay for it.

And even when you show they are merely stealing from themselves, they will still steal--some kickback in exchange for your gain is better than no gain at all.

Unlike liberal bias, conservative bias won't be able to hide.

252 Hey, the GOP can do one of those sexy calendars like the firefighter or cops.

We can have John McCain and Mitch McConnell shirtless. And so we don't get roped into any war on women rhetoric we can have Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe in 1920's style swinsuits.

253 These are the current rules for drone-ish things if you want to fly them under the national organization's umbrella and be exempt from FAA requirements.  The PETA fools will probably be violating quite a few of them.

All the high end copters have flight profile data logging too.  All it would take is one complaint to FAA and the data logged by their own gear will screw them good.

FAA has very little tolerance for people who operate unsanctioned outside the AMA.

257 Seriously, if the GOP read this thread they would be suicidal.

Or maybe even better, they would get rid of some of the old village idiots.

258 If ever there was a "Brilliant, bomb's away" moment to be had, Yahoo! just earned itself a big ass target.

I snuck it into one of my briefings today.

I was discussing making a new program operational.  A question was raised.  Before I could address it, another attendee provided a resolution.  There it was.  "Brilliant, bombs away."

And on we went.

261 The two problems with the title "What's Up?" were the apostrophe and the "s".

262  At the end of that Hotair link:

"...when a site that gave up blogging about Iran and the New York City terror plot to focus on the urgent threat from creationism tells you youÂ’re falling down on the job, you listen."

Haha good times.

265 I expect Ace and all you all are sure none of the GOP decline in federal polling and voting has anything at all, anything in least, to do with conservative Republican policies on public debt, expenditures and taxes, or women's reproductive rights, or and gay status legal rights, or obstructionism on combating global warming or limiting abuses of the 2nd amendment, or health and medical care coverage, or immigration, or any of hundreds of other policy matters that are subject of disagreement between Democrats and the majority of voters on the one hand and Republicans and the hard core minority of under a quarter of all voters on the other. Quite sure. I'm sure it's all about advertising marketing and packaging. So Reince Preibus and the professional advertising and messaging consultants are bound to make it all better. Quite, quite sure. I mean: it just can't be that Ace is WRONG about that 'hip-ness' factor ... can it?
