Granted it was a stupid deduction (and likely contributed to people who bought more home than they could afford.) Oh wells, I prepaid my PMI anyway, meaning I had to carry it on my taxes over 84 months, so it's less than $500 that I can't deduct. I've got bigger problems .

Activist singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco has canceled plans for a retreat at a former plantation near Baton Rouge after heated online protests about the venue.

Three days and four nights of songwriting and performance workshops had been scheduled in late June at Nottoway Plantation and Resort in White Castle, about 20 miles out of Baton Rouge in Iberville Parish.

She explained that "when i found out it was to be held at a resort on a former plantation, I thought to myself, 'whoa'...."

And then another 1.300 words of hem wringing.

Also:

The retreat, priced at $1,100 for tent campers and up to $2,000 per person for those staying in the resort...

What IS shockingly callous was the father's absolute disregard for diving protocol and the safety/well being of his son. Even if the boy went into the cave first as a matter of curiosity, the father should have briefed the boy beforehand against that kind of excursion and the father should have been at the side of the boy within arms reach from the time they descended to the time they surfaced. I have no tolerance or pity for people who hurt kids or do something stupid that results in kids getting injured or killed.

[Another diver] said their dive computers and air gauges indicated both had descended to 233 feet and that they had run out of air — Sanchez first, apparently, because his father had deployed a long breathing hose that allowed his son to breath from his tank.

Brooks speculated that they were racing to get back to their spare "safe" tanks placed at about 130 feet and nearly made it. Spivey's body came to rest next to those tanks.

That didn't mean they would have been home free. Because of the depth they'd reached, the pair would have needed about an hour to decompress, rising slowly enough so the air didn't form bubbles in their blood. They didn't appear to have adequate air in their tanks for that process, Brooks said.

Also, diving to that depth requires a mixture in which helium replaces some of the nitrogen in the air. That helps minimize the narcotic effect of nitrogen that gets stronger at depths beyond about 100 feet. Brooks said Spivey and his son were using simple compressed air.

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at December 31, 2013 09:55 AM (LSDdO) The man's son died. There is no next generation unless he had other children. Again, I see no evidence that the man's death was the result of genetic stupidity as opposed to ignorance of the nature of the danger he was in. You might argue that that ignorance is in itself evidence of genetic stupidity, but I will argue that the danger was not obvious and that had he picked a different time to go on his excursion, he might very well have avoided his fate.

.233 Feet?  Insane.  Recreational divers using regular compressed air have a bottom limit of ~130-160 feet and you only have about 5 minutes bottom time with the required decompression stops on the way back up.  His recklessness killed them both.

Then I saw one up close...while I was snorkeling. They didn't get any lower than I did surface diving with a snorkel. I was swimming next to them for a bit. And I'm not exactly some extreme surface diver, I was down maybe 20 feet, MAYBE, probably less than that. I guess it's a benefit that you don't have to come up for air, but considering I paid $5 for the snorkel, and they paid over $100 for the "diving excursion" I'm not sure it was a great trade. (This was in Cozumel, where all the beauty is surprisingly close to the ocean surface.)

Actually when you break down a "Generic" study population (of healthy individuals) you get 3 basic types (3.5 actually one is a subtype.) 1) People with economic needs (or wants.) This is the subtype one. You get a mix of people who either need or want money but can't come by it easily. The former is often unemployed/underemployed. The latter is often a college student looking for beer money. 2) altruistic individuals. (Self-explanatory) 3) Bored housewives. I'm not making that up or intending to be dismissive. Several studies found a high percentage of housewives who described themselves as "looking for something to do" Research provided a nice mix of "pass the time" and "earn an little extra spending cash." But they were significantly different from 1 or 2 (being a sort of blend) that they got their own category. But especially in FDA approval studies there are a high number of overnight or multiday stays that tend to recruit people specifically from group 1. Studies on sick individuals tend to have entirely different populations depending on what's actually being studied. Cancer drugs tend to recruit wealthier individuals, (because they're seen as a last resort and the wealthy can travel to the medical centers) Other drug trials actually very depending on a host of factors. Some recruit mixed, some mostly wealthy, some mostly poor who are actually in it for the free "treatment."

Heh.

another case of "we love socialism, we just never thought it would affect us" about to come in to play.

In a lot more areas, too.

See, socialism can zombie on so long as there is a large middle class to leach from.

But, there are no more middle class in NY--it's the exact "income inequality" they've projected on everyone else but at ten-times that level right there in their own little hell-hole.

Anyone who's an experienced, certified recreational diver knows full well how dangerous cave diving is.  They also should know damned well that 233 feet is way too deep as well.  I consider myself a fairly experienced diver (although I haven't dived in years) and I don't recall ever going deeper than about 130-140 feet.

Agreed.  I worked with a guy who was big into cave diving.  He did it every weekend he could and spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on it.  When asked about the danger, he would just shrug and say, "I fully expect to die in a cave because my luck will have run out.  But, I won't care because I died doing what I love."  He quit that job to move closer to another part of the country for new caves to dive.   He had done all the ones he cared to in this part of America, most more than once.  I don't know if he was a case of Darwinism at work or just sheer adrenaline addiction.

223 Short term hiring of the unskilled / semiskilled is (or at least was) pretty common in nuclear work. There are radiation dose limits for short term and lifetime exposure. Hiring temporary people to do simple chores like carrying toolboxes into, and filled garbage bags out of high dose zones allows the skilled workers to maximize their useful time limits on the job. Relatively high pay, too, for the few days allowed by regulations.

235 Jumping jehosaphat

Festivals/Holidays/Celebrations at the end of the year (winter equinox where the sun starts back north in the north) are meant for one thing and one thing only; party time.

Crops are in, repairs made, fields prepared, food processed etc.

You now know you face 2-3 months of cold/snow/possible starvation.

So you have a big party and get drunk, get laid, get in a fight with that a'hole down the road who gets on your thungas. See your kids make friends, show off, become liked, become hated, become stupid.

Then when it's all over you go back and sit in the hut/cabin/igloo/shed/shack and wait for spring thaw hoping that you've got enough food and heat making supplies to last until then.

(note the year end festivals predominate in northern cultures due to the weather. I don't know about the southern hemisphere due to lack of historical data. but even the Romans had their fun.)

Leaving Ft Jackson to go to the Evil W for some shopping and to get away from the fallow house we saw an idiot in a SUV shed a wheel that bounced literally down the road three blocks at a high rate of speed.

Only the paucity of traffic when the catastrophic failure struck prevented a fatality.....

the idiot had to have ignore the deterioration of his tie rods and/or wobbling noise from missing loose lugnuts for a spread of time...

that apathy/idiocy would have killed someone had it occurred a week later...

now on the stupidity/daring front wife ridiculed me for the glint in my eye saying I wanted to run and catch it.

289 Custer was a Sagittarius.

They take risks that usually work out because the Sag is very intuitive and smart on a subconscious level.

This is good for a battlefield commander who is operating independently and in a tactically fluid environment.

It does lead to problems with authority. (they don't respect it much and unfortunately show it.)

It can also lead in later years to impulsivity and an over reliance on their intuition which can be fatal if incorrect or executed incorrectly.

This is what happened to George. He didn't pay attention to detail and got him and 70 some guys shot up. Amazingly he had brought a couple of gatling guns but did not field them. They might have made the difference. They may not have been used due to terrain.

What does it say about a culture that promotes and perpetuates the falsehood that rappers have money?

Also, I don't know why there hasn't been a huge civil rights class action lawsuit against the unstated policy of many government adoption agencies absolutely forbidding blacks being adopted by whites.

As some have noted, there are many leftists who would have preferred that little boy had been aborted rather than adopted by a white family.

They won't say so out-loud but that is the logical conclusion for their stated unqualified support for abortion.

Someone mentioned spelunking up thread and I will admit that I used to enjoy doing a minor, minor bit of spelunking. I'm talking already mapped, maybe need a headlight, in and out in a few hours stuff, not actual spelunking. I enjoyed that right up to the time that someone in our group tripped and suffered a severe ankle injury and we all got to put our wilderness first aid training to the test. Thankfully, one person in the group was an EMT, we had good emergency medical supplies with us and we were able to rig up a carrier. But that turned our 45 minute little jaunt into about 3-4 hours and pointed out how something as simple as that was a Big Honking Deal.

Wife has seen some people get to go to school as their military assignment when that is not in fact their assignment b/c command "wanted them to succeed" whilst the rest of their shop had to quadruple down to cover their absence.

It shouldn't be a problem much longer I think the US military has at most another decade of this manpower level left.

344 Adrenaline junkies often wind up dead. Why? Because increasing the risk is the key to creating the adrenaline.

Case in point: Guy had a P51 Mustang - hottest prop driven fighter ever. Pretty soon having a plane that would cruise at 350 mph wasn't enough of a thrill - so he started flying it at 50 feet off the ground - till that got ordinary. So he started flying it at 350 mph 50 feet off the ground upside down. Now that was a rush - until one time he started to pull back on the stick to climb up...

When you put yourself into a situation where the last sound you'll ever make is "oops" you are a complete fucking fool.

This has happened more than once in history.

Not that she's illiterate. But like I said, she doesn't help herself when she does this kind of stuff. The LSM’s pursuit of “shock ratings” is unreal. Governor Mitt Romney ran for higher office with what I believe is a servant’s heart. He was saddled with some sup-par campaign tactics. That does not make him a bad person nor does it open his children or grandchildren to attacks over a year after the fact. This latest attack from the Left is despicable. Leftist media hounds are not expressing an opinion with this attack; they are expressing a prejudice that would never be accepted if it came from anyone else but the lib media. You really need a conscience, yellow journalists. May your 2014 New Year’s Resolution be to find one.

Well no, BUT there are a class of people who join up just to go to school and render themselves undeployable.

In the case of SMP , there is an 8-10 yr commitment required which  runs concurrent with the initial 4-6 yr enlistment. Double the commitment. The "undeployable" is arguable when considering the "pre-camp" training endured in addition to the full course load, Military science, drill duty and airborne, air assault, Northern Warfare , whatever in the summer.

Upon graduation you have the honor of deploying in a leadership role at around 38k /year so "undeployable" should really read "delayed deployment".

Plenty of enlisted Reserve and NG troops begging to go overseas to collect some sweet sweet tax free cash for playing Xbox. Mikeb trying to label a motivated college student officer-trainee as a REMF and lump them in with the FSA is both disingenuous and inaccurate.

It is absolutely true that the majority of drafted troops during the VN era did their jobs as well as a soldier might, and they are to be saluted and respected for their service. Now, having said that, it is also true that the very worst slackers, and those who were most disruptive to order, efficiency, and effectiveness were draftees. I have always been annoyed when I consider that those who put in 18 months of nothing but consuming resources received all of the same benefits that a volunteer combat ground-pounder who was in for years received. There.

Of course that's not really the Catholic conception of hell anyway, it's detachment from God, by one's own doing in fact. But a lot of people who want to live hedonistic life styles interpret that as "no hell, I get to do what I want." which is the furthest thing from the truth. As I tell a friend of mine "Fuck, I know I'm going to hell, I'm just trying to do as much good here before I go."

Since when does having to prove you're worth a crap first constitute punishment? As Sven says, there's sure a lot of folks sucking up positions that others would like to occupy whom would put in a full career. Not only am I saying that as a constitutional scholar, but an E-1 through 6, then a labotomy to get a commission. So I actually used TA,after upgrading in my AFSC so I could deploy; which I did. A lot. Most of my schoolwork was completed while TDY/deployed. But I knew what came first. 435 Grey Fox, It seems like we are arguing the same point except I don't think that 'foolishness' or 'recklessness' in warfare and the ability to learn and heed lessons that are genetic functions of self preservation in nature are comparable. Seems to me that warfare as practiced by humans is the result of political ideology be it from desire to control/eradicate a threat or to preserve oneself from a threat. Military training develops and refines tactical thinking that necessitates risk taking. There doesn't need to be any genetic component for that practice to be operable or effective. Human pride and arrogance, or being overconfident simply augment that condition. Thermopylae was a tactical decision made for the express purpose of warfare. Boone's excursion and Custer's charge were tactical decisions; bad ones, but decisions none the less. Genetics in nature favors those individuals and populations that avoid unnecessary risky behavior. Risky behavior in nature is purely for self-preservation. Lessons learned from parents and from observation tend to preserve life. Genetics, in the form of inability to learn those lessons seems to cull the herd. Animals do not naturally engage in behavior that they know will get them killed unless they are driven to that by circumstances beyond their control. The dad who disregarded everything he had been taught, and ended up killing himself and his son did not do so as the result of any 'conditioning' or 'training' or even the result of some compelling circumstance(s). It was the result of sheer stupidity. Stupidity is not the inability to learn, it is the unwillingness to learn (or to act on that knowledge). It is my opinion that stupidity is genetic.

Satan loves mankinds' indulgence of its worst to point at us and say "THEY are unworthy of you love lord....pick me pick me!"

God points to the damned and says "they were unworthy, these are my most beautiful creatures Lucifer for they CHOSE to follow me and admit their sin and repent."

Posted by: Bitter Clinger and All That at December 31, 2013 12:14 PM (LSDdO)

That by the way is the message that Christ brought to the Jews and Gentiles of the world. That we were not destined to Hell forever and always for everyone.

That belief in God's son was sufficient to prevent that fate.

It was necessary to do it that way so as to make saving oneself an affirmative act and not a direct gift. The gift is in the opportunity.

God has always been about free will. You can go to Hell or not. The choice is yours. It's something most non Christians don't understand or get wrong. Christians don't believe we're better than anyone else that we're less sinful.

Just that we are blessed with a chance to avoid the result.

And ANYONE can participate. That too was part of the message that Jesus brought to earth.

"For her part, Harris-Perry imagined Kieran Romney and North West, the daughter of Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, marrying in the future."

Holy fuck, these people are stupid.

445 eman: The tech ain't there yet.

Air consumption rate is based on exertion and how tired you are. Most rebreather operators keep a simple blood O2 gauge clipped to their ear, and manually add O2 to their mix, because too many divers have been killed by automated gear failing, and the diver being too trusting, and not keeping an eye on his blood O2 level.

I am certainly not going to put my life in the hands of some damned programmer ... that is like voluntarily flying on an Airbus ... ermmm, nevermind.

A current shifts, and your consumption rate changes. Lines, markers, and other breadcrumbs only work well if you are the first person there ... a lot of Florida caves are littered with abandoned guide ropes.

I guess that's the crux of where we disagree. I just don't think that having a mug complete his first enlistment before he gets TA INSTEAD of having TA covereage amounts cut is all that draconian.

The way I see it, doing so provides two positives. It cuts out the slackers, and it preserves the TA benefit for those who actually contribute to the mission.

All that is lacking is a leader smart enough, determined enough, and bloody enough to make it happen. Posted by: maddogg I don't think you could be more wrong than that if you tried. The larger problem with Africa is that the notion of a the Westphalian nation-state as it is understood by Western Man does not apply in Africa. Tribalism continues to align the thinking and behavior of most people in Africa. The bloody civil war that has claimed over 5 million lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the last 20 year is a small example of the likely outcome of what you propose. Bloody mindedness doesn't begin to describe what would be required. The United States, Canada and Mexico have a lot more in common and would be more easily united than all of Africa. Do you think THAT would be a good idea? And how bloody minded should we be for that to happen? What "Africa" needs is to discard all the false socialism imposed on them from the West. What they are likely to get in the next 50 years is Chinese mercantilism, as the Chinese have the energy and the material demands to get involved there in pseudo-colonialist ways to extract resources. And we will all be appalled by it. Sure.

About the father/son tragedy in Florida, I've read that most fatal accidents occur among moderately experienced divers: those with enough dives in their logbook to think that they know it all, but not enough dives to realize just how little they actually know. But seriously, there are two, three huge things preventing that.

The logistics of crossing the Sahara and the jungles.
No pre-existing national identity.
Rampant and deeply ingrained tribalism.

Even if you've the oil fields of Libya or Nigeria, you still lack a local industrial base.

Now, it would be possible if you've a partner with China, who's willing to lend huge amounts of military hardware and, possibly, troops.

514 I don't get it. What does Harris-Perry think is so funny about Kieran Romney and North West possibly marrying some day? Even if they had the same politics as their parents, people never marry people who don't share their politics? Of course they do. MSNBC stretching in their level of stupidity.

Exactly.  James Carville is married to Mary Matalin, of all people.  Two more politically opposite people cannot be imagined.

Why do I suddenly have this image that says Michelle Obama should really have married Prostetnic Vogon Jeltz, rather than Barky o'Fuckstick?  Heh.

478: "So all servicemembers who are college students and not you are non-contributing slackers. Awesome."

I truly hope OCS will help you develop your reading comprehension.

Let's try to parse this a little bit and see if we can illuminate this for you.

At no point did I use the term "all". But if this eludes you, I'l spell it out.

Not all servicemembers who go so school, college or otherwise are slacking.

But if you spend more time on your schooling than you do on the job you are collecting a paycheck to perform...you just might be a slacker.

If you are collecting academic certifications faster than you collect military certs...you might be a slacker.

If someone else has to take your mission slot because you are in school, and you don't take their slot in the next misssion...you might be a slacker.

If the only reason you entered into military service was to avoid as much service as you can while collecting the most benefits...you might be a slacker.

Even the greenest of new enlistees should be able to grasp this. But if you can't, then you will fit in well with the reformed officer corps.

Good luck to you, and more importantly, those under you.... Sir.

About the father/son tragedy in Florida, I've read that most fatal accidents occur among moderately experienced divers: those with enough dives in their logbook to think that they know it all, but not enough dives to realize just how little they actually know. The same, I've heard, is true for pilots.

A little learning is indeed a dangerous thing.

Posted by: Brown Line at December 31, 2013 12:29 PM (VrNoa)

The father should have known better than to head into a cave system.  That's drilled into students' heads in Open Water certification.  OW is a beginning cert, and even if this guy had Advanced OW, that's diddly squat compared to what he needed.

I'm Ice (overhead environment), Underwater Nav, Search and Recovery (black water rivers) certified, with a great deal of practical experience.  I won't go near a cave system.  They kill, sometimes even experienced cave divers.  The father was damned irresponsible.

Looks like Mom went solo diving to look for them.  Also generally a no-no, although she may have been capable of self-rescue.

Funny you mention pilots:  The "Killing Zone", or the time when general aviation pilots tend to buy the farm, is between 100 and 500 hours.  That's post-instruction, pre-"enough experience".

523 Glad to see history does sometimes get corrected. I grew up being told the Chinese invented gun powder but it took Europeans to invent the gun. I always was leery of that statement, as the Chinese ain't stoopid or immune to war. Of course it was bullshit. The Chinese did invent the firearm, and used them against the Mongols.

I most likely will not be watching the Olympics if I were a Russian I'd know I had a leader in charge who hates Terrorists and will kill as many as it takes to get it to abate.

Living in America I know I have a leader who hates domestic dissidence and will allow as many Americans as needed to die to feed political correctness.

538 I think that woman that won the $157,000 car on the P{rice is right should donate the car to President Obama to help people starving in this country during this hard winter. 540 527. Sven10077 No doubt. My first response reading the headline: how else, given a real threat? But the other day, when the joke was WHY THAT LOCATION for the Olypmics? I figured the pay-off to the selection committee gave Putin free hand in advance to make every "threat" disappear, all those pesky complainers; and of course, to expect the strong arm to re-engage Stasi style state police, martial law given the public specter demand for SAFETY. All sports events, no matter where, reason for everyone's cavities be searched. Revisionists have made up the new "spectator sport" -- no holds barred. Privacy? Never in public. Modern Olympics mark the return of war given the Titans. http://tinyurl.com/6q3gqrz Better to keep one's distance.

Take it from a guy who is far too old to go to OCS but who's son is fighting for a career as a leader despite the current climate (including self righteous jerks who took the bennies but now want to "reapportion" them according to their own personal fantasy) - the unexamined life is not worth living and sweeping generalizations of people are rarely if ever accurate.

You seem to be quite an expert on other people's slacking. Obsessed almost.

Lots of protest. Methinks too much.

Thanks for your service.

542 Facerig, huh. SOE came out with something called "SOEmote" that seems similar, though it's limited to the context of the games it's in (EQ2, possibly others). And the performance leaves something to be desired, especially if you have glasses or facial hair (lucky me, I sport both)...

544 1. Baldi? Is it for your thoughts? Cause the other thing I googled said it was hard core rap. Noone. Youre drifting. And let's not get snippy; I think we're among friends. The civilian thing is an entirely different issue. As I brought up in my first post. This administration seems intent on transferring benefits to civilians by taking them from those who've honorably served, and ultimately retired from the service. Ask about TSP benefits. Civilians get matched, active duty doesn't. How on earth is that right? We could go on... You've got a ROTC kid or something? Good for you. Sincerely. But don't confuse what he's going through with what a current enlisted/CGO is going through. Your kid is getting dollars based on what we HOPE he will become. I just don't see why it would be considered unreasonable to prove yourself first. I was a mustang; I was better for it. I was a proven commodity prior to being given the responsibility for a lot of people and things. Oh, and about your leadership comment; enlisted folks are "leading" too, for a lot less money. As a matter of opinion, it is a ill trained LT who disregards the council of his senior enlisted. And dangerous too. So, your kid, or whomever is doing an honorable thing. But he/she is not contributing to the mission. Maybe one day. But, not now. My military would look a lot like Starship Troopers. Everybody fights. Most commissions happen from below, and those that don't have a combat tour or few under their belts before given real rank. You're going out of your way to be offended. Your kid isn't a REMF because they aren't in the system at all, to me. I don't count the academies, ROTC, etc as part of the war fighting machine. Our services seem to be more protective of the rear echelons now that the folks whole actually are the pointy end. Granted, it takes a lot of support to care for the force: the rear echelons. I just don't think those should be military slots. If you want to earn your military retirement, you should take your turn in the barrel. If not, you need to be a civilian. Without TSP matching. I've said it here before. One of the hardest things I ever did was quit the service that I loved. Google mike and why I quit. A sincere happy new year to all

545 Inexplicably, ace missed this link about the ObamaCare disaster... http://tinyurl.com/konz56k "More than 2.1 million people have enrolled in private insurance plans the marketplace, she said. An additional 3.9 million Americans were found eligible for coverage through Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) in October and November, with that figure including some renewals and new eligibility. Those figures do not include 3 million young Americans in their 20s currently enrolled on their parentÂ’s health insurance." Clearly ACA will be repealed any day now, because taking insurance away from 9 million people is a winning strategy that Republicans should undertake immediately.
