Activist singer-songwriter Ani DiFranco has canceled plans for a retreat at a former plantation near Baton Rouge after heated online protests about the venue.
Three days and four nights of songwriting and performance workshops had been scheduled in late June at Nottoway Plantation and Resort in White Castle, about 20 miles out of Baton Rouge in Iberville Parish.
She explained that "when i found out it was to be held at a resort on a former plantation, I thought to myself, 'whoa'...."
And then another 1.300 words of hem wringing.

Also:
The retreat, priced at $1,100 for tent campers and up to $2,000 per person for those staying in the resort...

[Another diver] said their dive computers and air gauges indicated both had descended to 233 feet and that they had run out of air — Sanchez first, apparently, because his father had deployed a long breathing hose that allowed his son to breath from his tank.
Brooks speculated that they were racing to get back to their spare "safe" tanks placed at about 130 feet and nearly made it. Spivey's body came to rest next to those tanks.
That didn't mean they would have been home free. Because of the depth they'd reached, the pair would have needed about an hour to decompress, rising slowly enough so the air didn't form bubbles in their blood. They didn't appear to have adequate air in their tanks for that process, Brooks said.
Also, diving to that depth requires a mixture in which helium replaces some of the nitrogen in the air. That helps minimize the narcotic effect of nitrogen that gets stronger at depths beyond about 100 feet. Brooks said Spivey and his son were using simple compressed air.

.233 Feet? Insane. Recreational divers using regular compressed air have a bottom limit of ~130-160 feet and you only have about 5 minutes bottom time with the required decompression stops on the way back up. His recklessness killed them both.

I'm not making that up or intending to be dismissive. Several studies found a high percentage of housewives who described themselves as "looking for something to do"
Unfortunately, that "something to do" ends up being divorcing their husbands, taking their house, their money, their kids, and half their stuff.

another case of "we love socialism, we just never thought it would affect us" about to come in to play.
In a lot more areas, too.
See, socialism can zombie on so long as there is a large middle class to leach from.
But, there are no more middle class in NY--it's the exact "income inequality" they've projected on everyone else but at ten-times that level right there in their own little hell-hole.

Anyone who's an experienced, certified recreational diver knows full well how dangerous cave diving is. They also should know damned well that 233 feet is way too deep as well. I consider myself a fairly experienced diver (although I haven't dived in years) and I don't recall ever going deeper than about 130-140 feet.
That guy knew better, and his horrible judgment got himself and his kid killed.

Agreed. I worked with a guy who was big into cave diving. He did it every weekend he could and spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on it. When asked about the danger, he would just shrug and say, "I fully expect to die in a cave because my luck will have run out. But, I won't care because I died doing what I love." He quit that job to move closer to another part of the country for new caves to dive. He had done all the ones he cared to in this part of America, most more than once. I don't know if he was a case of Darwinism at work or just sheer adrenaline addiction.

Darwinism doesn't speak to any benefits to the species as a whole that might arise from the death of an unfit individual. It simply states that the unfit are less likely to survive and breed.
In this case, Dad was clearly reckless. I'd say his negligence was such that it would be considered criminal, has he survived, and the kid not.

I used to go abalone diving on the North Coast of CA in sometimes 1' visibility. The trick was to extend your arm with the abalone iron pointing down so you didn't bang your head on the bottom.
The good thing about that visibility is that you never saw the great whites hunting the sea lions.

My SCUBA instructor for my first level was a cave diver trainer. He was called to recover bodies in Florida and Mexico that nobody else could get to. It pissed him off to no end.
Our first day of class, he put our gear around our tanks, strapped the weight belt to it, and threw it to the bottom of the 15 foot pool. Then, he told us to dive in, and not come up until we had assembled the gear and put it on properly. Every diver that passed his class has become advanced or a divemaster.

Many Florida caves have padlocked gates, where a properly certified cave diver can get a key. That helps to keep out the untrained. Unfortunately, there are hundreds of caves in Florida, and many are accessible to anyone who wants to tempt death.
I go into shipwrecks all of the time, and have helped to rescue lost divers, but I generally avoid caves.

Festivals/Holidays/Celebrations at the end of the year (winter equinox where the sun starts back north in the north) are meant for one thing and one thing only; party time.
Crops are in, repairs made, fields prepared, food processed etc.
You now know you face 2-3 months of cold/snow/possible starvation.
So you have a big party and get drunk, get laid, get in a fight with that a'hole down the road who gets on your thungas. See your kids make friends, show off, become liked, become hated, become stupid.
Then when it's all over you go back and sit in the hut/cabin/igloo/shed/shack and wait for spring thaw hoping that you've got enough food and heat making supplies to last until then.
(note the year end festivals predominate in northern cultures due to the weather. I don't know about the southern hemisphere due to lack of historical data. but even the Romans had their fun.)

There was a case of this in action on Sunday when we were without power.
Leaving Ft Jackson to go to the Evil W for some shopping and to get away from the fallow house we saw an idiot in a SUV shed a wheel that bounced literally down the road three blocks at a high rate of speed.
Only the paucity of traffic when the catastrophic failure struck prevented a fatality.....
the idiot had to have ignore the deterioration of his tie rods and/or wobbling noise from missing loose lugnuts for a spread of time...
that apathy/idiocy would have killed someone had it occurred a week later...
now on the stupidity/daring front wife ridiculed me for the glint in my eye saying I wanted to run and catch it.

unless the person enjoyed drowning and/or suffocating, this isn't entirely accurate...

Actually, in about ten percent of the cases, the diver still had air in the tank when their body was recovered. Some panicked and lost their regulator and drowned, but it appears some realized that they weren't going to get out, and simply pulled out their regulator and breathed in water to get it over with.

They take risks that usually work out because the Sag is very intuitive and smart on a subconscious level.
This is good for a battlefield commander who is operating independently and in a tactically fluid environment.
It does lead to problems with authority. (they don't respect it much and unfortunately show it.)
It can also lead in later years to impulsivity and an over reliance on their intuition which can be fatal if incorrect or executed incorrectly.
This is what happened to George. He didn't pay attention to detail and got him and 70 some guys shot up. Amazingly he had brought a couple of gatling guns but did not field them. They might have made the difference. They may not have been used due to terrain.

Cave diving will always be stupidly dangerous for the untrained. The casualty rate is at 40% for untrained cave divers.
GPS requires line of sight to the open sky.
A simple rope requires being trained to bring the damned thing and actually use it. And on top of that, you need to be trained to have proper dive time discipline for caves.
You can't just surface when your tank gets below 500 psi. You also have to be where you can find the surface well before your tank hits 500 psi.
Even with top quality long term rebreathers, this stuff is stupid dangerous without specialized certification.

Also, I don't know why there hasn't been a huge civil rights class action lawsuit against the unstated policy of many government adoption agencies absolutely forbidding blacks being adopted by whites.

I was thinking more along the lines of devices planted along the way that can help guide you out and warnings from other devices that help you make better decisions during the dive.
-
Many caves have arrows and pointers left by previous divers, but I think the main attraction of cave diving is the danger. I go into shipwrecks because I can see history and see things that 99% of the population can't see, but cave divers just see rock, so there must be something to the danger that attracts them.

In the case of SMP , there is an 8-10 yr commitment required which runs concurrent with the initial 4-6 yr enlistment. Double the commitment. The "undeployable" is arguable when considering the "pre-camp" training endured in addition to the full course load, Military science, drill duty and airborne, air assault, Northern Warfare , whatever in the summer.
Upon graduation you have the honor of deploying in a leadership role at around 38k /year so "undeployable" should really read "delayed deployment".

What is the number of officer trainees dependant on TA compared to the number of four year (or sometimes two year) wonders out there?
I have no idea. There is only one trainee in particular that I am interested in.
It's pretty sad when conservatives work hard to justify Draconian cuts to 10% of the Constitutionally mandated government when a 5 % reduction in benefits to the GS-FSA would accomplish the same thing.
Of course college kids are easy targets.

Satan loves mankinds' indulgence of its worst to point at us and say "THEY are unworthy of you love lord....pick me pick me!"
God points to the damned and says "they were unworthy, these are my most beautiful creatures Lucifer for they CHOSE to follow me and admit their sin and repent."

That by the way is the message that Christ brought to the Jews and Gentiles of the world. That we were not destined to Hell forever and always for everyone.
That belief in God's son was sufficient to prevent that fate.
It was necessary to do it that way so as to make saving oneself an affirmative act and not a direct gift. The gift is in the opportunity.
God has always been about free will. You can go to Hell or not. The choice is yours. It's something most non Christians don't understand or get wrong. Christians don't believe we're better than anyone else that we're less sinful.
Just that we are blessed with a chance to avoid the result.
And ANYONE can participate. That too was part of the message that Jesus brought to earth.

Air consumption rate is based on exertion and how tired you are. Most rebreather operators keep a simple blood O2 gauge clipped to their ear, and manually add O2 to their mix, because too many divers have been killed by automated gear failing, and the diver being too trusting, and not keeping an eye on his blood O2 level.
I am certainly not going to put my life in the hands of some damned programmer ... that is like voluntarily flying on an Airbus ... ermmm, nevermind.
A current shifts, and your consumption rate changes. Lines, markers, and other breadcrumbs only work well if you are the first person there ... a lot of Florida caves are littered with abandoned guide ropes.
Nothing replaces training, except deciding to let someone else do this instead.

418: "It's pretty sad when conservatives work hard to justify Draconian cuts to 10% of the Constitutionally mandated government when a 5 % reduction in benefits to the GS-FSA would accomplish the same thing."
I guess that's the crux of where we disagree. I just don't think that having a mug complete his first enlistment before he gets TA INSTEAD of having TA covereage amounts cut is all that draconian.
The way I see it, doing so provides two positives. It cuts out the slackers, and it preserves the TA benefit for those who actually contribute to the mission.
As for who brought over my bullets? I did. In pallet loads on the C-5s, 141s, and 130s that I crewed.
While we are discussing how I transported my hard charging bullets, let it be known that I have had to take many an extra flight because some four year wonder was working harder on his BS in Underwater Basket Weaving that he was on finishing his 5 level training.
But then I guess you said all that needs to be said when you opine "There is only one trainee in particular that I am interested in".

About the father/son tragedy in Florida, I've read that most fatal accidents occur among moderately experienced divers: those with enough dives in their logbook to think that they know it all, but not enough dives to realize just how little they actually know. The same, I've heard, is true for pilots.
A little learning is indeed a dangerous thing.

Risk or Stratego?
But seriously, there are two, three huge things preventing that.
The logistics of crossing the Sahara and the jungles.
No pre-existing national identity.
Rampant and deeply ingrained tribalism.
Even if you've the oil fields of Libya or Nigeria, you still lack a local industrial base.
Now, it would be possible if you've a partner with China, who's willing to lend huge amounts of military hardware and, possibly, troops.
For those paying attention: China is making a lot of moves in Africa. And I'm sure you all know the typical Chinese view of anyone not Chinese.

478: "So all servicemembers who are college students and not you are non-contributing slackers. Awesome."
I truly hope OCS will help you develop your reading comprehension.
Let's try to parse this a little bit and see if we can illuminate this for you.
At no point did I use the term "all". But if this eludes you, I'l spell it out.
Not all servicemembers who go so school, college or otherwise are slacking.
But if you spend more time on your schooling than you do on the job you are collecting a paycheck to perform...you just might be a slacker.
If you are collecting academic certifications faster than you collect military certs...you might be a slacker.
If someone else has to take your mission slot because you are in school, and you don't take their slot in the next misssion...you might be a slacker.
If the only reason you entered into military service was to avoid as much service as you can while collecting the most benefits...you might be a slacker.
Even the greenest of new enlistees should be able to grasp this. But if you can't, then you will fit in well with the reformed officer corps.
Good luck to you, and more importantly, those under you.... Sir.

The father should have known better than to head into a cave system. That's drilled into students' heads in Open Water certification. OW is a beginning cert, and even if this guy had Advanced OW, that's diddly squat compared to what he needed.
I'm Ice (overhead environment), Underwater Nav, Search and Recovery (black water rivers) certified, with a great deal of practical experience. I won't go near a cave system. They kill, sometimes even experienced cave divers. The father was damned irresponsible.
Looks like Mom went solo diving to look for them. Also generally a no-no, although she may have been capable of self-rescue.
Funny you mention pilots: The "Killing Zone", or the time when general aviation pilots tend to buy the farm, is between 100 and 500 hours. That's post-instruction, pre-"enough experience".
