New Years' Resolutions Thread
— Ace

I have one. After giving up cigarettes for a year and a half, I picked the habit up again. Now I feel awful literally every day of my life.

What about you guys?

50 Here is a word of encouragement. Keep at it (giving up smoking), the more you try to give it up, the more it will not be a part of your life. The less it is part of your life, the healthier you will be. So try, try again.

55 Well, I don't do resolutions per se, but after a month of not watching my calories/exercise over-much, I'm getting back on that gradual weight loss horse. I lost about 17 lbs last year, but regained a couple this past month. I'd like to lose 10 more by summer when I'm hoping Mr Moxie is taking me to Hawaii for our 30th. I've also resolved to be a little more patient with people and especially to back off from fights with my fellow morons. I think I did a good job of that on this morning's thread. *pats self on back*

115 the first time I quit, I used some ditch weed I'd been given.

That lasted about 18 months.

smoked for another 20 years. finally quit cold turkey. (caveat: I had reduced myself to low nicotene low tar big filter cigarettes so it wasn't a heavy habit)

3 Days, 3 weeks, 3 months, 3 years.

Each of those are milestones in the progression.

The last is habit. doing stuff you used to automatically smoke while doing.

When you get to the point where you don't think about it at least once a day, you're probably ok but you can never take just one cigarette.

It's like alcoholics and drunks. Once a drunk, always a drunk. You're just not drinking/smoking today/now.

I didn't quit the second time until I would wake up and could barely breathe for a few minutes until I got my lungs flexing enough to work. Plus like you're saying, I felt like shit all the time and coughing.

I don't recommend crutches (If they work go to it) as it all boils down to mental anyway. The physical addiction is gone in at most 3 months.

you will gain weight unless you're observant and alert to it. (I did and I haven't lost any that I gained.)

My cardio doc said that it was better to be fat than to smoke so there's that.

116 Do a clearer job of terminating contracts. Anthem cancelled my health insurance and offered me a new ObamaCare policy, for 176% more. I figured that simply walking away would be sufficient, as, for the past 2 or 3 years, a payment sent one day before the Due Date resulted in an ominous "Notice of Grace Period" letter. Apparently not. I got a bill for January in the mail today: $495.00. I sent the stub back, with a letter noting that they cancelled my policy and offered me a new one, which I did not accept, and that therefore our business relationship was terminated 30 days ago. Perhaps I should have written something around the first of December ... but, given their anal-retentiveness, I though waiting would be more fun.

I quit smoking in August 2013.  It wasn't easy, I felt like I was going to go mad for a whole week.  The thing that keeps me from ever picking up another cigarette, I hope, is the knowledge that I'd have to go through that again to get rid of them again.

My New Year's Resolution last year was to get out of the rut I was in, with a dead-end job in a dead-end town.  I moved to Texas.  Problem solved.

My New Year's Resolution this year is to read more.  I'm out of serious problems that I can really do anything about, and that's a rare and wonderful thing in life.

My resolutions include trying to be more happy and grateful - I'm lucky my dad's still around, 87 and still sharp as a hobo's stick - quit smoking, go back to church, not yell at other drivers so much (living in California I see every one of them as traitors so yelling at them is much deserved), loose weight and exercise more, try to laugh out loud once a day, and not be on the intertoob so much.  It just pisses me off too much and keeps me in a chronic state of pissoffedness.

Also, it would be fabulous, Ace, if we could get back to mocking people more.  We need an updated face-slapping list, for example.  Moar silly stuff!!

Happy New Year, Ace .... and thanks for this wonderful place where we can swear and stuff.

The Boston parks thing, e-cigs over taxation paradigm sorta gets to the heart of the matter I was pointing out to Moo-Moo on the "pro pot" bent of his thread....

I find it hilarious that the $uper $tati$ts who want to control every aspect of your life down to how you fold the paper on the toilet paper holder in your lavatory are so "Sensimilia Libre!' on that topic.

The E-cig ban tells me the bastards are just interested in inflicting their preferences and morals across the spectrum of human behavior and every justification post Nanny Bloomby and Big Gulps rings more and more hollow.

Life is a full contact sport on a pretty unforgiving bell kept by a bastard timekeeper....

nothing the state does grants you immortality, and quite the contrary thanks to Ogabecare and the Liverpool Protocols sorta is really in the business of trying to interdict maximum optimal lifespan.

The stigma or family members not liking it, even the higher (and rising) costs and inconvenience just aren't enough. Don't despair too badly, though, you can always quit again. 309 Happy New Year!
May what you see in the mirror delight you, and what others see in you delight them. May someone love you enough to forgive your faults, be blind to your blemishes, and tell the world about your virtues.

May you remember to say "I love you" at least once a day to your spouse, your child, your parent, your siblings; but not to your secretary, your nurse, your masseuse, your hairdresser or your tennis instructor.

And may we live in a world at peace and with the awareness of God's love in every sunset, every flower's unfolding petals, every baby's smile, every lover's kiss, and every wonderful, astonishing, miraculous beat of our heart.

Let's make it a good one in 2014 ..

You may well be thinking of the ACTOR Pat O'brien who played Knute Rockne...

Pat O'Brien was a male Mary Hart who was a Horrywood red carpet booster and be used by in trouble celebs for PR recovery and spin control.

the reason the world took such glee in kicking him in the nuts was never has someone built so much Hollywood Pretension of Celebrity from so thin a resume for  so long.

(Sadly, I've found smoking even a social cigarette gives me an awful hangover if not a nasty respiratory infection.) But I've read that diet can help a lot, and it certainly helped me. Maybe it was a placebo effect. OATS. I read it somewhere, and it's worked for me. What I remember is it smoking alkalizes your blood and oats correct the balance very quickly, thus helping to stave off cravings and calm your nervous system. That's all I remember. I lived on oatmeal, apples and Fillet-O-Fish, and I lost a lot of weight, too.. Avoid coffee, meat and sugar. Even bread's ok.

420 As a former smoker, I (1) know how hard it is to quit (people have an easier time kicking heroin then cigs); (2) how bad you feel when you start again -- especially after a long time; and (3) I hate to bitch at others who smoke as I hated when non-smokers did that to me.

Nonetheless: stop smoking. We need you.

Get over the fact that you slipped back into the habit -- we've all done it, big deal. Go back on the e-cigs and wean yourself off that way in combo with the nicorette gum. Please.

I wish everyone here a happy and joyous New Year filled with peace, love and prosperity.

And, I am using less CAPS. That way, I can afford another small letter.

Those e-cigs. I wonder if you could just stick the vaporizer part of it in an inside pocket, and "smoke" it by way of a nasal cannula like those poor bastards who have to be tethered to an oxygen tank use? Doing it that way, you could "smoke" in areas where it is banned by the relentless nanny-state.

520 First of all, both of my parents had their lives surely shortened by tobacco.  Second, I must be a genetic anomaly because it has no fucking appeal to me whatsoever.  That said, I'm not an absolutist or a dipshit MADD type fuckhead about it.  Don't get me wrong, when smoking was still allowed in music clubs, I used to hate smelling like shit from all the fucking smoke I was immersed in.  So I don't miss that one goddamn bit.  But I understand how smoking gives some people a lift so I'm not about to tell them how to do things.  Plus I used to work with a guy who was at least a pack a day guy who decided to go cold turkey one day,  He became the most miserable POS after doing that that I pretty much urged him to stop being such a pain in the fucking balls and start sucking on the coffin nails again.

You have to be in the right mind set to stop.  Some people never are.  There are worse things they could do.

527 Sucks about the cigarette thing, Ace.  Especially since your e-cig post got me to quit smoking almost 4 years ago.

Try the e-cig EGO-C

I tried the Titan as you suggested and it was just barely strong enough to replace smokes.  The EGO-C blows it away.  I haven't felt the desire to smoke a real smoke in years, and I'm about as addicted to nicotine as they come.

Try it.  You'll feel a lot better all of the time.  Plus, you can smoke on planes if you're sneaky.

Actually finish some of the epic literature I've started, like The Iliad, Lord of the Rings, Jane Eyre, Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Posted by: Steve the Pirate's Wife at December 31, 2013 07:51 PM (MS21K)

529 I quit about three times over the past seven years.   The last time I quit I was finally successful.

I found that for me there were two levels of addiction going on.

One was the nicotine craving, which is really hard to break for the first few days.  In mid winter during a Northeaster at 2 a.m. in the morning, I would go outside with a flash light and look for cigarette butts in the bottom of my trash barrels.   Good times.  However after about six days the cravings would go away and I'd feel normal.

The secondary addiction was very low level and I'm not sure physical.   It would start happening about 3 to 6 months after I quit.   A lot of it probably had to do with the belief that I was past any addiction stage.

The third time I quit I spent special attention to the 3 to 9 month period after I quit.  Refusing to have a single smoke.  That seemed to work.

Most people I know had to quit several times before they got to a place where they truly kicked the habit.

Here's hoping you get there.

Pick up the book "Easy Way to Stop Smoking" by Allen Carr.

I tried to stop smoking many, many times and went nuts each time.

When I used this book, it was a million times easier for me.

That was 15 years ago.

I'm pretty sure it's self hypnosis, but hey it works and that's all I care about.

Good Luck!

547 Owlpellets - My thoughts and prayers will be with you as you relearn to walk. Never give up. My husband had to relearn how to talk and use his right hand after a stroke. They always tell you that what you have at 6-months post stroke is all you'll get. I'm here to say that is wrong. He is nine years out, and he's still improving. So will you. It's all just nerves, trying to find a way to connect and do what they were designed to do. Go for it!

550 My husband died 2 weeks ago, and within 3 days I was smoking in the house.  I despise myself for this.  OK, my brother was in town as a driver of this naughtiness, and I wanted to be an accommodating hostess.  Given the circumstances we were both sort of chainsmoking.  Death is stressful on the living.  But my brother left 4 days ago and I'm still smoking in the house and it reeks.

I'm not ready to make a commitment as to exactly WHEN I plan to stop smoking in the house, so maybe this doesn't count as a resolution.

Posted by: Miley's Tongue at January 01, 2014 04:23 AM (R+h7Q)

551 #543

I did Chantix.  It prevents that brain-brightening you get from smoking.  So you can suck, and suck, and suck, but you don't get what your brain wants from that cigg.  So there's no point.

Problem is, within 6 weeks I could actually feel myself get stupid.  My job is fairly straightforward, and I have a routine with a follow-up system that works well for me.  But I would completely forget to perform basic steps and found myself misfiling and misdirecting work.  It was pretty horrible.

For what it's worth, I was looking forward to some freaky dreams, but never had any.  Stupidity was the only side effect I noticed.

Then, once the Chantix is out of your system, your brain gets bright again when you smoke, so there you are.

RULE #1 WHEN QUITTING SMOKING:  YOU MUST TAKE THE PLEDGE "NOT ONE PUFF."

Period.

554 Too bad about the smoking thing, Ace. I started again a few months ago after not smoking for almost 20 years. I've been keeping it to no more than 1 to 3 cigs a day, but still feel kind of rotten. A couple of months ago I tapered down and quit completely using ecigs, which I don't like that much. One of my resolutions is to do that again and stick to it.

555 Move to Hawaii where smokes are 11 smackers a pack. I can hook you up with my dealer, who can get them at cost.

556 Try e-cigs. I bought my first one more than 2 years ago, and I wouldn't go back to cigarettes if you paid me. Find a reputable vaping store that will let you try flavors and nicotine concentrations as well as a delivery mechanism that works best for you and your personal style. If you wake up today and crave lots of nicotine and a good tobacco hit, you just fill your tank with an e-liquid that delivers both. Maybe you want something light and sweet, you can get that too - just switch out tanks. It takes a matter of seconds to go from one to the next.

Nicotine, in and of itself, is no more harmful than caffeine. All the nasty stuff (cancer, smelly clothes, etc.) comes from burning the tobacco itself. My wife HATED my cigarette habit, but she loves the vaping instead.

Bonus? I used to smoke a pack a day for 25 years. You can do the math on the cost of that habit. I now spend about $10-$15 a month to vape pretty much non-stop all day long.

557 Never quit quitting! I quit after failing many times, a couple as long as you did. Sooner or later the stars will align.

Posted by: rt at January 01, 2014 09:08 AM (HuFbk)

558 Don't beat yourself up for smoking again. Just keep quitting. It will stick eventually. DH quit when our daughter was on the way, then took up smoking again 3 years later after our twin boys arrived and he learned his company was facing a merger. I could hardly blame him. 3 kids, a wife, a mortgage and possibly no job?  When he was ready he quit again (it certainly helped that he still kept his job).

The boys are 5 now and DH has been smoke free 4 years. We both still gravitate towards the humidor whenever we're at the wine shop...cigars and pipe tobacco still represent the smell of prosperity to us both since he used to smoke both when we were a bit more flush with cash. Now we just take a deep breath for old time's sake and move on. My mom was a smoker for 50 years and it's been hard seeing her struggle with COPD and other smoking-related health issues that could have been avoided.

559 Simple solution, Ace. Develop a back injury that leaves you prostrate on the floor for six weeks, with no one willing to bring you cigarettes. Worked for my husband. He's been clean for almost two years.
