NFL In Full Swing
— Dave in Texas

Don't even talk to me about the Cowboys. You can't say anything that could crush my spirit more than a six year deal..

Just, shut it.

Have some football. And pointy elbows.

Winners were KU, K-State, the Royals, and Sporting KC (MLS). Heck, even Missouri won.

That being said, now the Chiefs are about to play. Not holding my breath...

OT, but sidebar-ish, that VDH piece is a fairly good example of how mediocre VDH himself can be.

His recapitulation of Obama's mistakes gets many things wrong and internalizes many of the idiotic myths that the Beltway cretins themselves live by.  He's wrong about the constitutional and even political implications of the current Syria debacle, he seems to forget that the Bush Admin. is the one that blew it in Iraq by letting the situation develop to where a bad SOFA could be forced on them, and he gives completely undue credit to McChrystal and Dempsey on substantive matters when in fact they are among the worst of the current crop of disastrously unfit and unreliable senior officers.

But as I've mused more and more lately, the mediocrity of the "conservative" commentariat is probably just a reflection of the degradation of the public square.  A plunging minus tide lowers all boats, I guess.

At least VDH didn't repeat his tired and pathetic little naieve bit of amateur criticism about "if only the US had not allied with dictators in the Middle East" which was featured in most of his otherwise sometimes decent commentaries following 9/11.

Now back to the pointy elbows .....

76 Question for the Horde: Am thinking about renting an RV next summer to drive cross country with the family (Mrs. Athens and Athens Jr.). Thinking about a class b but I am not sure of the differences between class a, b and c. Looking at the class b ones - glorified vans -at the moment. Is this more expensive than just staying at hotels? When we did this as a kid my parents would throw us (me, brother and sis plus a cousin) in the back of Pop's pickup (canopy only) on top of a mattress with coolers etc. and go. We'd sleep in parking lots and eat breakfast at Denny's so I am not into the RV "thing". These were fun trips though but in this day and age I'm not sure about doing it that way.

Having used to work in fast food, I'll tell you, we had to chuck anyone we find in the parking lots overnight.

Usually our CCW maintenance man did it.

Things may have changed since many went 24 hours, but when you're opening at 4AM, any vehicle in the lot not driven by an employee is a security issue that needs to be dealt with. 96 Man from Athens: Class A is the big ones, the ones that look like buses with a hotel room inside. They're the most comfortable but also the most expensive to operate. Class B is the least expensive to operate but not as comfortable by far as a Class A. Class C might be the sweet spot for you: Cheaper to operate than a Class A, more room and comfort than a Class B. It all depends on how expensive gas becomes and how far you intend to go. One good thing to have is a membership in Good Sam or KOA. Good Sam puts out guides to the campgrounds in the various states.

(I assume a travel trailer isn't in the mix because you don't have a tow vehicle.)

Posted by: nothinglefttolose at September 08, 2013 10:22 AM (M3APu)

221 Week 1 is easily the toughest to predict. Raise your hand if you though Tampa Bay, New England, and Indianapolis would all be struggling in the first half?

Posted by: logprof at September 08, 2013 10:24 AM (fOFYL)

222 Nascar has a "team orders" controversy from last night's final race to make the Chase (ie Nascar's playoffs). Clint Bowyer spun out with 7 laps to go, and Brian Vickers drover about 30 mph off the pace, so their teammate Martin Truex could make the Chase. This happens in every form of motorsports with teams, which is most of them. It's supposed to be an individual sport, but teams have great efficiency since they can pool resources and invest in better, higher paid, engineering talent and better shop equipment. Nascar allows a max of 4 cars per team.

HMMMM

so far, aj green had a wicked catch against tillman, burned Jennings for the other big one...if not for that it would be a blowout

no sacks on cutler and he's only been chased like 4 times

i'm amazed

Posted by: navycopjoe at September 08, 2013 10:30 AM (1MCcX)

225 Newman was winning the race, which would have put him in the Chase, when Bowyer's spotter told him on the radio and used some pretty obvious code words, Bowyer immediately spun out to bring the caution. Newman ended up falling out of the Chase on a tie-breaker. F1 has the same problem. It's really hard to prevent "team orders" and the incentive for teams to do it is high. For the last 10 races, only the 12 Chase drivers will get any media attention, since nobody else has a chance to win the Cup. Since Nascar's finances depend on sponsors getting media attention, it's hugely important to make the Chase.

Posted by: Niedermeyer's Dead Horse at September 08, 2013 10:36 AM (DmNpO)

231 Bowyer was already locked in the Chase, and points are reset once the Chase starts, so it didn't matter where he finished that race. So he wrecked himself to help his teammate. Similarly Vickers was already locked out of the Chase, so finishing even worse doesn't really matter. Especially when your owner orders to slow down and let people pass you, if you want a job next year, you do what the owner says. The Richmond race has some of this every year since it's the last race before the Chase and the incentive to try some dirty pool is so high. Bowyer is a terrible liar, though. He made it too obvious and when the media asked him if he spun on purpose he looked like a teenager caught stealing a beer.

334 logprof, Do you have a spare QB?

Posted by: Y-not at September 08, 2013 12:37 PM (5H6zj)

335 Crap, if Matt Ryan had such a lousy game against the Saints D, I think I need to be worried about one off my teams.

336 I'm just glad the devil, I mean Tim McCarver doesn't do analysis for football.

337 339 logprof, Do you have a spare QB? Posted by: Y-not at September 08, 2013 04:37 PM (5H6zj) --You mean in the Moron League? Um, yeah, Brandon Weeden.

Posted by: logprof at September 08, 2013 12:38 PM (fOFYL)

338 Never mind, logprof. Must be a different league.

Posted by: Y-not at September 08, 2013 12:39 PM (5H6zj)

339 OK... that's you, logprof. Manuel managed to get 20 this week.

Posted by: logprof at September 08, 2013 12:39 PM (fOFYL)

341 Trying to upgrade my QB but may just have to ride this buffalo all season.

Posted by: Y-not at September 08, 2013 12:40 PM (5H6zj)

342 20 team league? That's brutal.

343 --I'm in CDR M's Moron ESPN league that has a ridiculous 20 teams. That's why Allen is my TE and Weeden is my backup QB. -- Yeah, I realize beggars can't be choosers, but too many friggin' teams and too small rosters.

360 Y-not, to me, this is the Game to Watch this week.  I'm on tenterhooks to see if CK is the real deal.  I think he might be, but I've been fooled before (cf, Sanchez rookie season).  It's a fun game to watch.  I am drinking like a sailor on leave.

I get a bad hit off of Kaepernick. Seems like a thug. Talented, undoubtedly, but I wonder about his character. Of course my heart belongs to RGIII!

Posted by: Peaches at September 08, 2013 02:56 PM (8lmkt)

376 Wait, so the 49ers got a phantom third down due to officials' error and scored off it? Holy shit, that sounds worse than the Fail Mary from last year.

377 DiT, there are at least a dozen teams that would trade even for Romo, including the Texans. They'd probably throw in some draft picks.

379 Where's Faith Hill when we really need her?  I'd never seen Carrie Underwood perform, so I didn't realize that she makes up for her lack of musical ability by not being particularly fun to look at either.

380 Romo hating Cowboys fans are to Real Cowboys fans as Joe Scarborough is to real conservatives.
