No One Cares: Time Names Pope Francis At the Top of Its "What's Hot" List
— Ace

I hate that I'm even mentioning this fake story. I'm linking the Telegraph here, not Time.

As I said, Time made this call to push their left-wing political agenda, and also to achieve their secondary goal, which is selling magazines and making money.

Their precis on Pope Francis highlights only his usefulness as a spokesman for social justice and wealth redistribution. They claim that he's not interested in the "doctrinal" matters that his predecessors were.

Time's headline and subhed:

Pope Francis, The PeopleÂ’s Pope

He took the name of a humble saint and then called for a church of healing. The first non-European pope in 1,200 years is poised to transform a place that measures change by the century

Time's interest: One part Power to the People agitation, one part multiculti uplift. Sprinkle liberally with a call for Hope and Change.

"What makes this Pope so important is the speed with which he has captured the imaginations of millions who had given up on hoping for the church at all," Time magazine said in announcing the winner.

", the buck-passing infighting over lines of authority when all the while (to borrow from Milton), “the hungry Sheep look up, and are not fed.”

"In a matter of months, Francis has elevated the healing mission of the church—the church as servant and comforter of hurting people in an often harsh world—above the doctrinal police work so important to his recent predecessors. John Paul II and Benedict XVI were professors of theology. Francis is a former janitor, nightclub bouncer, chemical technician and literature teacher."

One of us.

And as I said: Social Issues You Guys.

He is quoted saying of women who consider abortion because of poverty or rape, “Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations?” Of gay people: “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge.” To divorced and remarried Catholics who are, by rule, forbidden from taking Communion, he says that this crucial rite “is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.”

I don't quote Time to knock the Pope, or offer any opinions on his leadership of the Church at all.

I only quote Time to mock Time, to note how predictable they are. I predicted this yesterday, including the reasons they'd offer for their choice.

This is not because I am good at prediction; this is because the leftwing media is so very kneejerk and predictable. They claim to be neutral and objective. And yet someone can predict every single one of their news judgements by proceeding from the rule that they will make whichever judgement best serves the Progressive Socialist Transnationalist Cause.

Suppose I'm in a shady casino. I'm playing craps. I'm given a pair of dice by the pit boss, to throw to determine the results of a particularly large bet. I object and say I believe the dice are loaded, and will come up craps. He insists they are fair dice, and could come up with any dice tally.

If my prediction -- that the dice will come up craps on anything important -- is always correct, that casts a great deal of doubt on crooked house's claim that the dice are fair, doesn't it? They claim any score can come up; I claim it will always come up craps when they need it.

If it always comes up craps, then I am right, and they are lying.

If they're not actually in service of the Progressive Socialist Transnationaist cause, why is it that any moderately-informed observer can predict every single one of their judgements by employing this rule?

Thanks to @daveintexas.

When he's not pushing class-warfare, Marxist nonsense about the gap between the rich and poor, he's saying absurd things like you don't need to believe in God to go to Heaven or that its not his place to speak out against homosexual priests.

Of course, even though liberals finally got one of their own as the Pope, I don't see a huge influx of liberals pouring into the Catholic Church.

Sure, but I'm an ideologue of sorts, and perhaps what he's saying is an anathema to ideologues on both sides. Difference is the left will try to run with his statements and twist them into something post-modern they can use. Me, I'll wait and see and be perplexed and worried for a while. I find it hard to believe that this pope is simply going to set aside the question of "what does it mean to be Catholic." Heck even his statement on Abortion or Gays don't mean what time implies they mean.

94 Socialism inspired by Christian values has brought about the monstrosity that was the Soviet Union. Look up "the diggers". Christian Socialism. Marx was nothing new. He gave it the veneer of academia by inventing terms and using poorly written language (complete with exclamation marks, you guys!!!!) and atheism. Which is, in Marxist practice, itself a religion.

He is quoted saying of women who consider abortion because of poverty or rape, “Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations?”

He does not say that they should get an abortion.

Of gay people: “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge.”

He does not say that homosexuality is not a sin.

To divorced and remarried Catholics who are, by rule, forbidden from taking Communion, he says that this crucial rite “is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak.”

He does not say that they have not sinned by getting divorced and remarried and can thus take communion.

It is great that he lives in a modest apartment and drives his own older car to work.  Humility and self-denial are virtues which cannot hurt his performance.  But to believe he is some sort of revolutionary is just flat WRONG.

142 Actually, unless I missed something, the comments that he has made are standard Christian attitudes toward people who sin, which is all of us. 'He is quoted saying of women who consider abortion because of poverty or rape, “Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations?” ' Yes, you feel sympathy for someone who is poor or has been raped and is pregnant. Did he ever say that abortion is acceptable or not a sin? ' Of gay people: “If a homosexual person is of good will and is in search of God, I am no one to judge.” ' Did he say that he supports gay marriage, or that homosexual acts aren't a sin? It is routine for parishes and dioceses to have welcoming messages for gays. Just as they welcome any of us who have had sex outside of marriage. Christianity is for sinners. Christianity is about redemption. The geniuses at Time don't understand the difference between welcoming the sinner, but not condoning the sin. They like the word "nuance" but they are too shallow in their thinking to apply it to real life situations.

And now this about the "Time" magazine choice of the Pope.  I love how their selection of his quotes, which they use to imply that he is somehow undermining centuries of Catholic dogma, are so clearly being misread.   I mean,   this:

He is quoted saying of women who consider abortion because of poverty or rape, “Who can remain unmoved before such painful situations?”

By which Time is implicity saying, "THE POPE IS OKAY WITH ABORTION!"  Except that's not what he's saying.  You'd have to have a heart of stone to not be moved by a rape victim's plight,  or the money woes of a poor person who doesn't feel they can afford to feed another mouth   at the table.   But that's not the same as saying, "WOO-HOO, abortion for everyone!  WOO!"

They're such transparent idiots, it's amazing   they can see themselves in the mirror in the morning.

177 No One Cares: Time Names Pope Francis At the Top of Its "What's Hot" List I hate that I'm even mentioning this fake story. I think that gives me permission to go off-topic (heh). Some of you may remember the bizarre "Occupy the Farm" protest of last year, in which local OWS lunatics "occupied" a field owned by UC Berkeley which is used by students to study the genetic code of plants. (Original report here: http://www.zombietime.com/zomblog/?p=1842). Somehow the Occupiers got it into their heads that the field was going to be paved over for a senior housing project. And that they therefore had the right to "seize the land in the name of the people," even though the "people" already owned the land and already thought a Senior Housing project was a good use for it. The most insane aspect of this was that the Senior Housing project WAS NOT EVEN GOING TO BE BUILT ON THE OPEN FIELD, but rather nearby by on some ratty-ass land that had a similar name. Anyway, the "Occupation" of the farm eventually fizzled and failed, but the OWS maniacs have continued their Alinkskyite campaign to stop the project anyway, for no discernible reason (mainly to cover their tracks for being such idiots, to make it look like they knew what they were doing in the first place). Anyway, today was a local city council meeting about the zoning, and the Occupiers showed up to disrupt it. They posted the "event" on a local radical events calendar -- which accepts comments. So I thought I'd have a little fun with them and post a comment of my own. It appeared -- and then within 15 minutes was deleted by the administrators! So, to preserve my comment for the historians, I re-post it below. (The URL of the "protest listing" is here: http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2013/12/06/18747390.php ) And here's the now-deleted comment: "You Occupy the Farm people are crazy Wednesday Dec 11th, 2013 11:05 AM You refer to the southern part of the Gill Tract as "a crucial piece of our local food security infrastructure" and "a block's worth of fertile soil," completely (and intentionally) oblivious to the fact that ZERO food is currently grown on the southern part of the Gill Tract, and it's not even currently "fertile soil" because it's mostly covered with trees and bushes. It is therefore NOT "a crucial piece of our local food security infrastructure" nor even a nonessential piece of our local food security infrastructure. It's not part of the food infrastructure at all. Furthermore, even the northern part of the Gill Tract, the UC Berkeley research station, does not grow crops for consumption but rather for genetic study. It also plays absolutely no role in the local food security infrastructure. What happened was this: Someone at Occupy two years ago heard about the plans to "build housing and retail stores on the Gill Tract," and MISTAKENLY thought it was referring to the open-land experimental research station owned by UC Berkeley. So without doing any further research, you guys "occupied the farm" -- completely unaware that you were occupying the WRONG PIECE OF LAND. Later, in a comical "A ha!" moment, you must have learned that the entire protest was based on miscommunication and a misunderstanding, and that you were wasting your time protesting against a plan that didn't even exist (i.e. the non-existent plan to pave over the farm area). But by this time it was too late, you had committed yourselves to a blunder, and you couldn't back down, lest you look like the fools that you are. So you keep plowing forward, opposing the project for no good reason, and citing imaginary justifications ("a crucial piece of our local food security infrastructure") for your off-topic and irrelevant harassment campaign. All of this doesn't even mention the patently illegal and immoral actions of your attempts to steal public land (owned by the people of the State of California) which is currently being used to study and improve food supply for everyone in California, and take that land for your own private little fantasy games of pretending to be "farmers" and benefitting no one but your egos. It'd be laughable if it wasn't so infuriating. Just stop it. Admit you made a mistake. No one cares about your childish harassment campaign except for you handful of people wasting their lives with Occupy the Farm anyway. And I speak directly to everyone currently in Occupy the Farm: Look at your life. Think about the idiocy of wasting your 20s on a completely moronic years-long "protest" that is not only doomed to fail but which was based on a misunderstanding in the first place. Get out while you can. Your life is draining away on the most ridiculous blunder imaginable. It's sad to watch."

I also think they have no clue how religion or religious organizations work. If they want to see how going completely left wing has worked, look at the Episcopalian church it's pretty much dead. I think that's why progs hate protestants so much, no overall leader to control, it's a bottom up structure. If people think a pastor is too political they will simply go somewhere else.

252 Again, I hope I'm wrong and the Pope is indeed Catholic because I think it's important for the world to have a Catholic Church that doesn't go into some sort of New Age direction that many Churches like say the Episcopalians have, but I'm not holding my breath. --- If Presiding Bishop Jefferts Schori doesn't end up causing a schism in the Episcopalian church, I'll be shocked. Hilarious.     You'd think the translator   community would have demanded an actual, competent sign language interpreter for    what   is probably the most significant   moment in South   Africa's post-Apartheid history.   When you've got a shitload of world leaders coming to the country to fete a man with as much international    reputation    as Nelson Mandela, you'd think they'd make an effort to      represent their country as something OTHER than a stumbling clusterfuck of corruption, crime and graft.

257 If they want to see how going completely left wing has worked, look at the Episcopalian church it's pretty much dead. I think that's why progs hate protestants so much, no overall leader to control, it's a bottom up structure. If people think a pastor is too political they will simply go somewhere else.

Posted by: Adam Smith's Invisible Pimp Hand

Exactly.  Which is why it's so dangerous if you get the wrong Pope, he could easily destroy the Catholic Church overnight because it's a top down structure.  In a Protestant church, there's a lot more mobility and the clowns get cut off at the knees.

258 >>>What he wants BECOMES doctrine

OK As a Catholic, I think I've got to clarify.

Sorta kinda not really. He can't overturn previous doctrine held infallibly. But if you aren't of the faith (Catholic Specifically, meaning that you believe the Holy Spirit will keep His Holiness from mucking up Church Teachings) you might be concerned about the fallible teachings. Even in this area a Pope (if you believe he is just a man) is limited by the fact that if he accuses the Church to have committed a serious error over a number of years, that is seriously detrimental to the Church.

The Church teachings reject communism and socialism, and affirm a right to private ownership of property. (Albeit subject to caveat, not an unlimited right)

So no matter how sympathetic to Progressive Social Justice, the Catholic Teachings remain. Also of note I might add is this about his love of Progressivism.

262 He's the pope. He can do what he damn well pleases. And that's woven into that 2000 year history too. So how do you square the reconciliation of the Western Schism with that theory? Urban VI at Rome and Clement VII at Avignon excommunicated each other. Each had reasonable claims to the office. Then a third Council of Pisa elected Alexander V. The Council of Constance deposed all three and elected Pope Martin V. Sooo ... if the Pope can do anything he wants, the Council of Constance had no right to depose and elect anyone.

278 OK, morons -- here it is: read it and weep/laugh: http://www.sfgate.com/news/world/article/Mandela-ceremony-interpreter-called-a-fake-5054326.php "The sign-language interpreter on stage at Nelson Mandela's globally broadcast memorial service was a faker who was just waving his arms around meaninglessly, advocates for the deaf said Wednesday. The unidentified man seen around the world on television next to leaders including United States President Barack Obama "was moving his hands around but there was no meaning in what he used his hands for," Bruno Druchen, the federation's national director, told The Associated Press. The allegation was yet another example of bad organization at the historic memorial service Tuesday, which was marred by public transportation breakdowns that hindered mourners from getting to the soccer stadium venue. In addition a faulty audio system made the remarks of world leaders inaudible for many. Police also failed to search the first wave of crowds who rushed inside the stadium after authorities opened the gates just after dawn. ... Four sign language experts, including Druchen, said the man was not signing in South African or American sign languages and could not have been signing in any other known sign language because there was no structure to his arm and hand movements. South African sign language covers all of the country's 11 official languages, according to the federation. ... The man also did sign interpretation at an event last year that was attended by South African President Jacob Zuma, Druchen said. At that appearance, a deaf person in the audience videotaped the event and gave it to the federation for the deaf, which analyzed the video, prepared a report about it and a submitted a formal complaint to the ANC, Druchen said. In their complaint, the federation suggested that the man should take the five years of training needed to become a qualified sign language interpreter in South Africa. But the ANC never responded, Druchen said. Druchen said a fresh complaint will be filed to the ANC about the interpreter he called a "fake" with a demand for an urgent meeting. ... Bogus sign language interpreters are a problem in South Africa, because people who know a few signs try to pass themselves off as interpreters, said Parkin, the principal of the school for the deaf. And those hiring them usually don't sign, so they have no idea that the people they are hiring cannot do the job, she said. "They advertise themselves as interpreters because they know 10 signs and they can make some quick money," said Parkin. "It is plain and simple abuse of the deaf community, they are taking advantage of the deaf community to make money." "

The pope's power of primacy over all, both pastors and faithful, remains whole and intact. In virtue of his office, that is as Vicar of Christ and pastor of the whole Church, the Roman Pontiff has full, supreme and universal power over the Church. And he is always free to exercise this power. The order of bishops, which succeeds to the college of apostles and gives this apostolic body continued existence, is also the subject of supreme and full power over the universal Church, provided we understand this body together with its head the Roman Pontiff and never without this head.(27*)

Rule 1 if you aren't Catholic or a serious scholar of Catholic history and theology, take a grain of salt when reading Catholic documents. YOU DON'T KNOW THE SUPPORTING THEOLOGY.

And guess what. The Theology is OVER the doctrine and defines it. Not the other way around.

The doctrine is written with the FAITH that the Pope CANNOT be in error in certain ways. The Pope can't act in a manner which destroys the theology that his doctrine is based. And would you get that reading the doctrine. Nope.

310 Oh, sweet Jesus. Can we please not attack each others's churches?!! Christians of all stripes MUST stand together. The powers and principlaities want to kill and destroy ourselves . our faith and our witness. The church of the state and the faux messiah Obama DON"T CARE if people think you're the one true church or if you think the RCC had abuses in its thousands long history or is the whore of Babylon.. Some Cardinal in the RCC (can't remember who) said, "I expect to die in my bed. I expect my successor to be imprisoned and his successor to die in the public square." I think he's correct and I'll extend it further than that. If you are a Christian who doesn't cave into the state you'll go to the camps along with the other Christians and the faithful Jews who don't think Obama is the messiah. As far as Christians THIS is our unity in the church: One body of believers-Do you believe risen Jesus is Lord and do you desire to follow him or not? One Spirit: The Spirit activates that fellowship One Hope- The future in eternal life to which we are called and which starts when you are claimed by Jesus and claim Jesus as Lord. One Lord. It is Christ to whom we belong. One Baptism-The entry into the church. One Father-One God who keeps us for all eternity. Division is a tool of the flesh and of the devil and as Anna Puma noted it is a another squirrell to divide us.

311 This is the man who can send a catholic to hell

He can't send anyone to hell, Catholic or not. No man has that power--but then, I'm a Protestant. Goings-on at the Vatican generally hold little interest for me although I was amused by Hot Air's Ed Morrissey's and NRO's Kathryn Jean Lopez's breathless moment by moment reporting of the last papal election.

312 Pope Francis is no Liberation Theologian. He's not a Ron Paul follower either. Those few Jesuit LTs still alive hate him. They tried to send him in to semi-exile because he opposed them. JPII elevated him personally. JP II & BXVI were very successful in purging LTs from the ranks of Cardinals and Bishops. (A curious side note seminaries in "conservative dioceses tend to have more students, and more "orthodox" students than seminaries in "liberal" dioceses) However, Pope Francis is very concerned with the plight of the poor and is trying to come up with a good counter to LTs emotional (if marxist appeal). He actually faces a similar problem that conservatives here face in dealing with the left and its emotional appeals. Pope Francis made some good points about devaluing currencies, and robbing people of their savings. He really condemned the George Soros style crony capitalism, and gave conservatives alot of ammo, if we're willing to see it and use it.

I've read some of his writings and interviews.  Not all of it, admittedly - I lack the time.

Having said that, I am less than impressed.  The tendency for Catholics to read the best intentions into everything that the Pope says is very well noted.  There is a marked lack of skepticism, and things that would immediately trigger our alarm from anyone else are explained away nonchalantly.

Some assume that this man isn't lying, ever...that he wouldn't try to play both sides of an issue to both gain acceptance with conservatives inside the Church and with leftists outside.  They are welcome to it.  Perhaps that's part of faith.

I'm not one of those people.  He's still a man.  His background, along with the tone and focus of his commentary, when coupled with the pervasive Social Justice monstrosity propagated throughout the entire Church...well, I see what I see.  And I won't be back until it's corrected.

He has an opportunity to refine and explain, but all I see are ambiguities, and I'm not fond of ambiguity from someone who sits at the head of the Church.  To me, that is a very negative indicator.

Maybe its a cause and effect type argument. We have to act affirmatively to reject God's love and forgiveness. God wants us all home. He will forgive anything. We have to turn away from him. In rejecting him, we condemn ourselves.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at December 11, 2013 03:40 PM (BC6cY) Yeah, could get Papist cooties! Something else to keep in mind, our politics oscillate between left and right. The Church really doesn't do that. The Church stays basically the same, while the secular world oscillates around it. Which is what's supposed to happen. Conservative and Liberal mean very different things in a global 1.5+ billion member organization. Pope Francis and all the other Popes, bishops, and priests are trying to get all the members going in the same general direction, and staying true to a 2000 year old faith.

Why does one preclude the other?   I have no faith in Obama, but I very much care what he says, because it affects me and my loved ones.

I'd love to go back to mass regularly.  Every single church in both the US and Canada, where I've attended mass in the past 10 years, has been steeped in Social Justice doctrine.  This affects me, because I'd like to rejoin a community where I used to care enough to volunteer and even sing in choir.  I'm just not going to do it when this constant socialist drumbeat is louder than nearly everything else.

I reserve my faith for God.  The Pope is just a man. When a man heads a worldwide organization of about 1.5 billion people, he has enormous global influence.

And if that influence is going to fall on the side of "social justice,"  as it has so far, that's why I am interested - even while skeptical of his intentions.

Would you be open to attending another church community?  I can think of two that might meet your need to worship God in a traditional conservative manner, while staying focused on the heart of the Christian faith.  Might I suggest either an Anglican church or perhaps a Lutheran church affiliated with the Wisconsin Synod.  Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran churches - WELS - are very conservative but have a liturgy that you might find appealing.

328 >>>And if that influence is going to fall on the side of "social justice," as it has so far, that's why I am interested - even while skeptical of his intentions.

His power is limited to the theologically defined limits of his station.

Catholic Social Teachings aren't any sort of specification of means. They are a sketch of ends that a truly just society achieves. I agree the US Church is overrun (To the extent social justice is taught explicitly) with catechists who teach the subject who are closet socialists, who themselves defy Church teaching. But they cannot, say any particular means, such as raising minimum wage is a correct means. Even the Pope can't do that, it lies beyond his Primacy. So it will be a Diocese by Diocese and Parish by Parish how Catholic Social Teachings are taught. But the real point I'm trying to make is. The Church is a big girl and she moves real slow. She isn't going to move very far from where she is at. And she can't move backwards or in a direction she's already declared to be wrong. So I think really the Catholic Social Teachings theology have more or less reached a cul-de-sac of ideas that would be cool if mankind had a perfect solution to governance which he doesn't. I'll give you another hint, most Catholics who actually attend mass and care what the Church says, are Conservative, and aren't going to get less so.

329 Good point, Gran- I would suggest the ACNA: http://anglicanchurch.net/?/main/page/about-acna People who have left the RCC sometimes feel that there's is the only true church theologically even if they don't attend, but if someone wanted regular communion an ACNA (Anglican Church in NA) or conservative branch Lutheran is the way to go. It sadddens me when people are separated from Holy Communion because of political differences with their church.

From a purely logical standpoint, I would.  However, there are other considerations - familial, among others - that make that impossible.

Like it or not, I'm either Catholic or nothing.  I don't feel alienated with Catholicism.  I feel alienated with the Church.

334 Mike, I do get your point, and it is well-taken.  However:

The way I see it, I'm a "bad Catholic" even if I do show up, because I don't agree with the "Social Justice" stuff. I don't think the connotations behind the usage of those words have any place when teaching people why they should give of their time and treasure to help the poor.

It has very little to do with "justice," and is just another form of coercion, only religiously instead of legally.  It's still not charity.

So, I'd rather not show up and grit my teeth and force my way through it. That's not my idea of a special celebration with God.

I'll keep my eyes open, and if and when the overzealous socialists are kicked to the curb, I'll come back.  But they haven't been.  For decades.  And they don't plan on loosening their grip.  My kids' agenda books, ordered by the Catholic school system, are *FULL* of this stuff.

My 7 and 6 year olds aren't deserving of being made to feel horrible because they were lucky enough to be born into a healthy set of circumstances.  They haven't done anything wrong, and using the words "Social Justice" teaches them they have, and that they are expected to give of themselves not for true charity, but in some insane attempt to "right that wrong."

This is evil on a very fundamental level, and the Church is letting it happen.

I don't think you can separate the celebrant - the entire person - from the Sacrament.  "Social justice" isn't just a political POV, per se.  It has political ramifications, but it's a clear spiritual and emotional warping of the concept of charity.

So yes, if I know the celebrant is a perveyor of "social justice" doctrine, I will not feel as though I can share a connection to God with that person.

Usually when I get confronted by "Over Zealous Social Justice Person" about "What have I done?" I give the. " I LOVE social justice! I wish to reform tort laws so people don't fear owning a small business due to stupid US liability issues. I wish to reform licensing laws, so the government isn't taking cut's of the profit of a new business before they even make any. I wish to effect better education and offer more opportunity by promoting school choice, allowing the poor the opportunity to choose the best education, not have it assigned to them. I want to make owning a business so easy and so popular that you can't help but pay a descent living wage for the shortage of labor. I want to see an end to large corporate crony capitalism, and socialized losses, where the powerful but regulation to keep out the little guy, or we the people have to pay the price for the greed of others." Then smile.

And watch them try and figure out a way to rebuke me. It's really kind of fun.

Feed the hungry and clothe the naked are non-negotiables from Christ himself, but the best and most prudential means of archiving these goals remains largely open to discussion among the faithful. (Though some proposed solutions, like Communism, have been condemned.)

I do not know what you've been hearing preached from the pulpit, but come to Mass for Jesus, truly present in his sacrament. (I'd even sit through an infomercial for that.)

349 Great analysis, which up until now, is the first thing that passes for it. (I'm not a Catholic) For example--. "millions had given up on hoping for the Church at all" (Millions ?- Hope at all?

But I think its just plausible, in their nicely 'targeted'  praise for Francis, they were also backhanding the Church tradition(s) and past Popes -- laughing all the way. So it was also a driveby on his predecessors and the Catholic Church in general. Like everything the left does, they are only using him in some capacity for their own agenda. Fairweather friends. When is Francis going to realize they are only using him?

But hey they can do their critique anytime they want. That they use their platform now and this Pope for it is more the issue. You nailed it:  a fake story.... with  more spin than a centrifuge.

Posted by: Bullright at December 11, 2013 06:40 PM (9RcXQ)

350 As a Catholic, I am slightly offended by the way the media generally twists everything. But this is a game the media plays. They want to create a wedge between Catholics where none really exists.... It's wishful thinking. But Time is what, a century old.... The church is 2000 years old, inspired by Christ. The first Christians were crucified, flayed, stoned, burned, fed to lions.... And not for some worldly vanity conjured up on Madison Avenue. So, whatever the progressives think they are doing, and the conservatives for that matter... These are all steps in the history of salvation. Naturally, it would please me to see many cooperate with God and enjoy the peace that comes with a true vocation... And it pains me to think of the ignorant and the wicked who might choose otherwise (and who harm the innocent). But the closer we get to Jesus, the stronger we'll be. Everything will be OK.

Posted by: bleck at December 11, 2013 07:30 PM (b6Qog)

351 The other piece is that the Church has nothing to fear from its theology... The mistake of the critics is to assume it is just a bunch vaporous sleights. But if you start pulling at the threads, you find a path into belief. Pope Francis' emphasis on mercy is great.... Bring people into dialogue. Make friends. Learn from them. Work on living well. My mom told me that you cannot really see the stained glass windows from outside of the Church, but if you step inside....
