No One Saw This Coming.
— Ace

Steny Hoyer wants to appropriate more taxpayer money to fix ObamaCare, whose nonfunctional website cost nearly $300 million.

Asked Tuesday how Congress could help improve the system by which millions of Americans must buy insurance by the end of the year, the House minority whip and Maryland Democrat said, "We can give them a little money."

"[Republicans have] been pretty much focused in the House of Representatives on undermining the implementation of the Affordable Care Act in every which way that we possibly could," he said.

Hoyer admitted that he does not know whether the project, which has already cost more than $400 million, has faced funding problems. "I don't think that's the reason," he said. "If I know that, I'll blame it."

Note that like Obama he insinuates, without stating it forthrightly, that the Shutdown was responsible for the failure of the website.

If they don't say it, but only imply it, they can count on their media friends to ignore the clear lie.

Representative Hoyer, that $300m is what is called in business terms a "sunk cost".  You aren't getting that money back no matter what.

A smart businessman would know when to cut their losses instead of continuing to throw money down a bottomless hole.  Of course, I don't think there's a single member of the Democrat caucus who knows a damn thing about running a business, so they'll insist they just haven't spent enough on it yet.

(Translation: It is ok to scream and yell about this failure if you are a Republican. But if you're not, shut up.)

"I'm sure that everyone who was a proponent of the Affordable Care Act is not happy — me included," he added, "because it gives fodder to those who are opposed to the substance of the act."

(The substance of which is not easily discerned when reading 2000+ pages of "the act" or 17 million words in new regulations, but ya'know making a website is even harder than writing all those words.)

Of course, it costs money, but, based on my decades of IT experience, there is nothing to salvage.  I want them to give it up completely, but, they won't, they are invested in #404--hook, line, and cloven hoof, so if it must be done, give it to someone who can do it at least a half-assed job and for )*&^%% make it Americans.  Admittedly, programming that stupid exchange is practically impossible because the law itself and its piles of contradictory directives and regulations are complete shyte.

Let's start by taking all of Steny's money and throwing it at the problem.

Tell any Dem who asks for more money after that that their personal wealth will be taken next.

Lather, rinse, repeat.

103 I don't feel like screaming today. Cost over-runs on the F-35 are worse, much worse. We've spent BILLIONS more than planned and still it isn't ready. Software problems again. This software and code writing thing; it seems to be harder when real people have to do it rather than when politicians and such talk about what it is supposed to do. The real problem with Obamacare isn't the software writing, regardless of the stupidity of the management of the government in trying to get this turkey to work. It's that it is a tyranny of the government imposed on the people. Regardless of what Chief Schmuck Roberts said, this is contrary to the fundamental meaning of the Constitution. We are COMPELLED to buy a product that we may not need. Free men. We are not anymore.

106 *reading from teleprompter* There are many days when I should be tending to the nations business that I will receive a call from Republicans challenging me to a round of golf. Now that is not the highest priority for me, but in the spirit of bipartisanship and reaching across the aisle I will accommodate them. What I discover, time and again, is that Republicans will tee the ball up, then shank it into the woods. Then ask for a do-over. A 'mulligan' is the term they use, if I recall correctly. So tonight I have been asked by many Republicans to request that the Affordable Act Website be given a mulligan. I have answered their request in the affirmative. In the spirit of bipartisanship and reaching across the aisle I will accommodate them once again. No questions, I do not wish to embarrass the Republicans any more then already is apparent to everyone.

113 Over at Bloomberg News (I know, I know) Ramesh Ponnuru has an interview with a GOP Senator on deep background, no names used.

It's an absolutely priceless view of how the entrenched Beltway establishment think.

This Republican is making fun of people who called his office during the shutdown asking him not to vote for cloture on restart, because some callers didn't have the terminology quite right. They were urging him to vote against "keister" and "cluster" instead of "cloture". It's made clear that this Senator views them with dismissive contempt. As illiterate rubes and stupid hicks.

That's what the GOP establishment is down to. Mocking ordinary citizen voters for not having a perfect grasp of odd inside-baseball Congressional terminology that really isn't used in average daily life outside the Beltway.

150 "Cost over-runs on the F-35 are worse, much worse."

That program really exemplifies D.C. dysfunction, and it's a sobering precedent when you reflect on how Obamacare will shake out.

It's been clear for about ten years to those who follow defense aerospace that the F-35 is a failed program. So seriously failed that it is actually now a national security risk in its own right. And yet... the F-35 never dies. No serious attempt is ever made to kill and replace it. That's not even proposed other than by a handful of powerless political outsiders.

The only thing the Capitol Hill and Pentagon establishments can think of is to throw even more money at the damn thing. While closing off every other alternate avenue of development, like keeping the F-22 program going. So that when the F-35 finally collapses, there will be no backup.

Now, when I hear people say, "Oh, Obamacare will get repealed once it's clear what a disaster it is," I get a sinking feeling. The Beltway mandarins don't repeal failure. They reinforce failure. They'll just throw more and more money at the shitpile, trying to get it to do what it was originally claimed to do. The turd isn't yet polished to a gleam? 175 "Imagine if Obama's mother had to sign up for Obamacare before being allowed cancer treatments?"

Worth remembering that Obama repeatedly claimed in 2008 that his mom died because she didn't have health insurance when she got cancer. Not a word of that was actually true.

176 The website cost an enormous amount of money and went to a non American company that was questionable simply by the fact that they were apparently fired years before.

Now they want help from the best and brightest Americans because they are Americans and are patriotic.  There has been an interview of John McAfee going around in emails.  Essentially he says he was asked for help but decided not to allow them to use his name but not help.  It's worth listening to the interview.  I don't have a real link for it, got it in email so I hope someone else knows the interview I'm speaking about.

182 sven10077: "it's Cornyn or Graham..."

Speaking of... Cornyn's been buying ads by wheelbarrow to sell his conservative bona fides. Senator Cruz, meanwhile, has been greeted like a victorious general returning from war. Eight minute standing "O". Reception venues needing to be upgraded to handle the spiking RSVPs. The state GOP politicians saying, "Yeah, I'm like that Cruz guy."

There's not a politician in the country that wouldn't wish to have Cruz's popularity and numbers right now.

So some money to go the Senate Conservative Fund would be especially timely about now. Cornyn's feeling the heat. He could use some more.

Yeah, it all sounds cuckoo bananas, but, sadly, it is not.  If you have just a handful of subscribers (I can't remember the #, but, it is not greater than 5) who identify a specific language other than English as their preferred language for getting the EOB, you are required by law to translate said EOB flawlessly and free of charge .

193 "Here's the bad part, they can't do a website, but they want everybody's medical information on a database. Remember that part, all the doctors have to go digital records."

One of the Horde related that their hospital had just done the transition to electronic medical records, and their doctor was very confused on reviewing their chart. It turns out the Horde member's record had been merged with that of another patient. To include diseases the other person had, but the moron in question did not. And to include surgeries the other person had had.

Nothing could go wrong as a result of that, you can be sure.

Note also that you can expect for a shit-ton of back records to get mislaid or deleted during this transition. If there is important health information at your doctor's office, you better lay hands on your own personal private permanent copy of it, pronto. A good idea at all times, all the more so now.

That's where I am.  Can they just jack the rates of everyone else, or do they need an appropriation in excess of the amounts specified in the original OCare bill.  Yes, I understand that Obama cares not a whit for the law, but if the money isn't there, it isn't there.  There is just no way in hell that the GOP will vote to pull his ass out of the fire on this by voting more money.  Well, possibly excepting Marco Rubio, who needs to jump in said fire.

213 And the economic death spiral continues.

It wasn't the Wall street crash that caused the Depression.

It was the shrink back out of fear of the unknown.

Banks are fairly risk averse and so are most businesses.

That's why 3rd world countries are 3rd world countries.

No one knows from one minute to the next what will be illegal/seized/confiscated/destroyed.

We had such a massive economy that all the tinkering and added blocks that were inserted in the interest of special interests and "fairness" and "equality" didn't affect it much but it made it more fragile.

When the planes hit the Towers is when it began and everything since then has just been a slo mo collapse due to the weight of all the bullshit.

Nothing can be done until it all shakes out but by then the Dems will have ensured that no recovery can happen and we will have either a command control economy (i.e. 3rd world dictatorship) or secession and balkanization of the states.

And the Repubs have been in on the destruction from the get go.
