Not With a Bang, Not Even With a Whimper
— Ace

Must read piece by Kevin Williamson that is as bracing as it is dispiriting.

I won't quote much of it for two reasons: First, Five Feet of Fury, from whom I stole it, has a good teaser quote to pique your interest. I could also steal her quote but what are we, barbarians?

The other reason is that the first quarter of the article attempts to elucidate the precise nature of the conservative (or rather rationalist) objection to the sinister and alien figure of one Barack Hussein Obama, the Prophet Who Stuttered. I think that's advertisement enough.

The end is about Obama's increasing resort to Banana Empire tactics in asserting, without the pretense of a legal justification, his power to refashion the law as suits his political interests as he whims it.

So I'll cut a very brief quote:

President Obama and his admirers choose to call this “pragmatism,” but what it is is a mild expression of totalitarianism, under which the interests of the country are conflated with those of the president’s administration and his party. Barack Obama is the first president of the democracy that John Adams warned us about.

Democracy never lasts long,” Adams famously said. “It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy that did not commit suicide.”

Read the whole thing. If you get bored (hard to imagine), you can skim a bit as he recites the Bill of Particulars in his brief against Obama's lawlessness and tyrannical impulses, and then slow down again for the conclusion.

Part of my disgust at the GOP is that they continue to strategize about politics while Obama is claiming power plenipotentiary to do, well, whatever he likes.

I am aghast at the alleged "Fourth Estate" for not so much as arching an eyebrow at this; but what can I say about an alleged opposition party also being quiet as churchmice?

Update: Even as I was writing this, Obama's leftist cultists are now pushing the idea of Our Dear Tyrant amnestying all illegals by executive fiat.

Do not forgive them, even if they know not what they do.

Harry Reid says, "If you don't capitulate, I'll take away the filibuster," and they capitulate. Would he have done it? Maybe but in that case the GOP got nothing in return. So if Obama says, "If you don't pass my bill, I'll just amnesty everybody," let's not forget that he partially did this with DREAM, do you call his bluff or do you compromise? Nine illegals, brought here as children, were jailed in Arizona after a publicity stunt. They were released and deported. They tried to re-enter, DHS granted them asylum since they face "credible fear or persecution and torture" if they go back to Mexico. WTF? Seven of the nine aren't eligible for the Dream Act, one is 37 years old and five of them have gone back and forth to Mexico to work over the years, without consequence. WTF? And then they co-opt the name "Dream 9" from the Arkansas 9? I am so sick of this shit!

At some point, for your own sanity, you have to accept that many people are terminally dysfunctional and unreachable.

Maybe none of this surprises and shocks me because I'm now enured, due to the indescribably horrible suicide of my father.

I still vote, and I still follow the news, but now I concentrate fully on my career and improving myself as a person. I'm not outraged, shocked, angry, or depressed by anything now. Either we'll get our act together as a nation, or we won't. It's a binary proposition.

I don't agonize over what I see all around me, and I'm not emotionally invested in any of it. I've accepted what Obama, the press, and the GOP are. Nothing any of them do surprises me.

None of them have even the tiniest power to upset me anymore.

Bill Clinton got up on stage at the DNC last year and said that Obamanomics was just like Clintonomics. He said that Clintonomics took some time to kick in, and that Obamanomics was going to take some time, too.

But, Billy Jeff said, by 2013, Obamanomics was going to have the economy ticking over like a finely tuned racing engine. It would shortly be the way it was again in the late 1990s, with job openings everywhere. He said voters would soon "feel it" as the economy took off next year. Which is now, since he said that last year... this year.

And of course Clinton's claims were bullshit. And we're now well into the third quarter of 2013 and Obama's economy isn't doing what was claimed for it.

So, how should the GOP respond? With a simple challenge. Based on the Clinton economic record. The House should say that they will allocate only as much money, corrected for inflation and population growth, as was allocated during the same year of Clinton's presidency.

We're in Year 5 of Obama, so he gets as much money to work with as Clinton did to work with. Not a penny more.

Which sets up the bar for Obama: Clinton was able to have growth and prosperity and falling poverty rates with 34% of GDP devoted to federal spending. Why can't Obama do the same? Obama gets 34% just as Clinton did. Not 37%. Not a penny more.

If nothing else, this would be worth it to watch Democrats stammer about how the Smartest Man To Have Ever Lived, the Windy City God-Emperor, can't possibly be subjected to such demeaning comparisons.

History is filled with "patriotic" soldiers who, under the training and pressure of chain of command, willingly stepped on the necks of those they're tasked to defend.

How many have, while still under government employ, challenged this particular administration, for example? I don't share the faith that many have about "the military" standing up to its superiors in or out of the chain of command.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. My wife is from China and she looks at this society and she's very concerned about seeing another "cultural revolution" in the works. We go over these scenarios because her grandparents didn't, and caught the bad end of it.

 

The police already roll around in APCs. No big deal, I guess. Counting on solidarity among your neighbors sounds like a losing strategy in this society. They'll rat you out in a heartbeat, think about it. Moving isn't really an option since every other country on the planet actually requires visas. But the USA has something many other places dont- lots of wilderness. I'm afraid that's all we got to fall back on.

Students who can supply proof of at least two years of full-time secondary schooling beyond the age of 14 taught in a foreign language may request exemption from the foreign language requirement. It means that you went to high school in a non-English-speaking country where the default language of instruction in high school was not English.

So good.  We put newspaper on the breakfast room table and had just those two, perfect lobsters.  I was wise enough to put them in the deep freeze for a few minutes to "put them to sleep."  I always ice-down blue crabs the same way.



Anyhow, my husband said, "These aren't all that large."  I barely finished most of mine and gave the rest to him.

On the bad side: Employment in the industry is looking bad. They got me by the balls there. Will have to ride it out a few months. Could try my hand at some more higher ed, but if I have to do because of no job might try some place else than the previous round. I must admit Dr. T. has a certain ring to it. Fially: Stand firm, keep your chins up, and read good stuff about liberty. We must outthink and outfight. We can do it.

No.  The Kibbutz was envisioned as a way to build a new socialist society.  To be fair, the original Zionists were theorizing before the Russian Revolution demonstrated just how horrific socialism is when it is imposed on the unwilling majority of people.  Instead the Kibbutz has slowly gone the way of most voluntary utopian socialist schemes, from the Oneida Community to the hippie communes.  There are still some of them around.  My brother spent a few months at one (no, you don't have to be Jewish).  I got the impression from him  that it was kind of like a dude ranch. 



Anyway, the original Zionists saw socialism as integral to their vision.  Most modern Israelis, particularly those who lived in the Soviet Union, do not share that enthusiasm for socialism.
