Notorious Somali pirate arrested by Belgian authorities
— Purple Avenger

When a foreign operation perp snatch seems too risky, its easier to just con the perp into coming to you to be arrested.

In a sting operation worthy of Hollywood, Mohamed Abdi Hassan was lured from Somalia to Belgium with promises of work on a documentary about high-seas crime that would “mirror his life as a pirate,” federal prosecutor Johan Delmulle said Monday.

But rather than being behind the camera as an expert adviser, Abdi Hassan ended up behind bars, nabbed as he landed Saturday at Brussels airport.

Hassan had hijacked a Belgian vessel some years ago but had proved elusive when traditional law enforcement methods were tried.

The promise of free shit (in this case free fame) draws them like moths to the flame though. Hundreds of fugitives have been swept up en-mass over the years here simply by mailing them notices they won free NFL tickets or some similar nonsense. A significant percentage always show up to "claim their prize".

Every time the cops run one of these scams, its a winner even though the ploy is old as the hills.

The power of free shit compels you

Pretty much    just dry ice and water put together in a tightly sealed container.   The    dry ice   turns to vapor and the pressure builds in the canister until it explodes.

Two and three liter bottles hold in a lot of pressure.

We're not talking dynamite levels here, but enough to make a loud boom and leave a decent sized whole in the ground.

The explosive force can be pretty strong,  especially depending on how much dry ice you use compared to water and in how big a container.    And when you're at an airport and hear an   explosion, you're going to panic.

I think the thing that makes the LAX bombs more threatening than mere pranks is that they've all been found in areas that have restricted access.   So this isn't a case of someone making a dry ice bomb in the bathroom and leaving it somewhere on the concourse.   Someone is deliberately making these bombs IN the restricted areas and leaving them there.   It doesn't take long for the reaction to happen once the water and CO2 are mixed, so whoever's planting these things has to be pretty close to where they are by the time they go off.   Either that or    s/he has rigged some kind of   time delay device to mix the water and CO2 without needing to be around, which would bespeak a level of   planning    more than you'd get from your usual prankster.

Dry ice isn't easy to get a hold of anymore.  They used to pack it with ice cream here all the time, now I don't even know where to get it.

(idiots used to throw it down their sink too, which sometimes cracks pipes if it settles somewhere and overcools them.  We cracked a sink once in the lab when someone dumped a batch out and left it there rather than just letting it evaporate in the cooler.)

Or at least how they're getting it into the area.   In LA I expect getting dry ice is    even easier than getting it elsewhere, since it's used to make that neat foggy effect in movies and whatnot.  And at this time of year, with Halloween parties   going on and people wanting to break out the fog machine to give their venues a little added spook factor, it's probably easier    than any other time of year.

Kind of makes me wonder if  whoever did this might not be trying to see what security will do in the event of a real-life bomb so that they can plan accordingly.

Chances are that there are already ne'er-do-wells (read Muslim terrorists) who have infiltrated the "secure" areas of airports like LAX - now they are just testing the waters to see  how best to exploit the holes in security.

If LAX security is smart, they'll be looking at their behind-the-scenes camera footage to see what went on in places where these dry ice bombs WEREN'T - you know the bad guys were  trying to find that information.

139 What is needed is a mid-sized container ship to be turned into a Q-ship.  Line the sides with CONEX so it looks full.  But the center is hollow and you have one or two AV-8B Harriers parked there loaded with ammo and rockets. And some of the CONEX have fold down sides so things like Bofors L70 40mm guns are inside.  Plus a company of Marines.  Oh yeah and a 60mm mortar for star shells.

Let that troll in the high pirate areas.  With occasional refits to change appearance.  Pirates would rapidly become extinct.

I hear what you are saying about Tom Hanks' political spewing.  I respect his acting ability and some of my all time favorite movies star his dumb-ass self.

In this instant, I pretty much ignored him and was just waiting for the head-shots.  My girlfriend had no idea what ended up happening, so I kept saying "wait for it" whenever she'd grip my arm and say "good grief, how is Hanks going to get out of this mess!?!?!"

Needless to say, there wasn't any sex the night we saw the movie.

But the head-shots, and knowing that in at least one instance, high seas justice was most definitely done, took the sting out of that.

My understanding is open threads were still open threads and all topics were acceptable.

What ace didn't like was the hijacking of the themed threads (broadly construed.)

Typically a thread like this (loosely tied to a recent news story but no overarching theme) has been treated like an "open thread" (as opposed to a thread on a movie review or French or gaming.)

So I think we all assumed this was just an open thread.  Apparently Purp wants us to stay on the topic of Piracy?

Somali piracy could be stopped in about two weeks. Just shoot every boat full of pirates until they run out of terrorists. If the pirates all die, the survivors will realize that piracy is NOT a money making venture.

But the navies of the world do not do that anymore. It is not progressive.

If the republicans had anyone with an IQ higher than room temperature, they would make an ad out of Luke Russert's latest raving.

He just said that the problem with making a deal was that the republicans wanted to "Screw their staff over" by making them live under Obamacare along with regular people.

Hopefully, with all the alleged talent we have, someone on our side will recognize   that this is simple enough for the average, uninvolved bumpkin off the street to understand in one sentence.

This is how you win.  You get something so easy to understand that it's almost automatic.  All you have to do is get people on our side to cite it at every opportunity.

People understand the concept of "you live under the rules, but we folks in charge don't have to".

277 Not of the same magnitude, but still angering. Local cops finding a mature 17 year old, dressing them even more maturely, then sending them into buy a pack of smokes at some convenience store, then bust the proprietor. How they around entrapment on that, I have no idea.

Posted by: Mike Hammer at October 15, 2013 12:17 PM (aDwsi)

To be fair, this is    standard    tobacco compliance check procedure,  required by the FDA.   You have an underage person attempt to buy    a tobacco product to see if the cashier cards them as they're supposed to.   If the checker asks to see ID, the kid is supposed to say, "Oh, hang on, I left my wallet in the car" or "Shoot, i forgot it. Never mind," and then leave.  If they don't ask for ID the kid says, "Hang on, I left my wallet in the car" and then leaves without returning.  They're never supposed to actually RECEIVE the tobacco product in question.

The store usually gets a warning the first time, then a fine for multiple incidents.
