NYT Compares Obama to... Bush?
— Ace

At Hot Air. I'd quote more, but they're blocking me.

Barack Obama won the presidency by exploiting a political environment that devoured George W. Bush in a second term plagued by sinking credibility, failed legislative battles, fractured world relations and revolts inside his own party.

Mr. Obama is now threatened by a similar toxic mix. The disastrous rollout of his health care law not only threatens the rest of his agenda but has also raised questions about his competence in the same way that the Bush administrationÂ’s botched response to Hurricane Katrina undermined any semblance of Republican efficiency.

And, Open Thread.

I apologize for bailing early three nights in a row, but for some crazy reason, I actually have social commitments this week (which I'm not at all happy about).

Tonight's meeting is about actual political business, so it's not just slackin'.

8 All is not lost for Obama. There still are folks even stupider than him ...

Militant Islamist rebels in Syria linked to al-Qaeda have asked for “understanding and forgiveness” for cutting off and putting on display the wrong man’s head.

In a public appearance filmed and posted online, members of Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham, one brandishing a knife, held up a bearded head before a crowd in Aleppo. They triumphantly described the execution of what they said was a member of an Iraqi Shia militia fighting for President Bashar al-Assad.

But the head was recognised from the video as originally belonging to a member of Ahrar al-Sham, a Sunni Islamist rebel group that often fights alongside ISIS though it does not share its al-Qaeda ideology.

After inquiries, an ISIS spokesman admitted he was Mohammed Fares, an Ahrar commander reported missing some days ago. This could not be independently confirmed, but in an earlier video of a speech by Mr Fares he bears a close resemblance to the severed head in the later video.

42 “Making sure consumers have secure, affordable coverage is health plans' top priority. The only reason consumers are getting notices about their current coverage changing is because the ACA requires all policies to cover a broad range of benefits that go beyond what many people choose to purchase today.

“Changing the rules after health plans have already met the requirements of the law could destabilize the market and result in higher premiums for consumers. Premiums have already been set for next year based on an assumption of when consumers will be transitioning to the new marketplace. If now fewer younger and healthier people choose to purchase coverage in the exchange, premiums will increase and there will be fewer choices for consumers. Additional steps must be taken to stabilize the marketplace and mitigate the adverse impact on consumers.”

We've only had this kind of system in a cold climate for a short time. First year we did nada without problem. Last year we had the prinklers turn on during a cold snap. But closing the main valve solved that with no resulting damage. Can't decide if it's worth the hassle and expense of hiring someone to winterize.

49 Not to fall into the trap false equivalence laid by the NYT, but... Katrina = natural disaster + incompetent democratic state officials + wall to wall reporting on fake stories of rape and violence. Obamacare = purportedly well-thought out and intentional takeover of 1/6 th of US economy + exclusion of any republican ideas + lie after lie told by Obama and his minions + media branding of all Obamacare critics as racist, extremist, obstructionist, and terrorists + abject failure to figure out the most basic economic and health care policies.

The mayor of New Orleans and the governor of Louisiana, both democrats had much more direct responsibility for the Hurricane Katrina response. Was Hurricane Katrina avoidable? Was Hurricane Katrina planned ... for 2 or so years? Hurricane Katrina was really a local/State issue, utterly un-handled by NO and LA ... we saw how Nagin fell apart on national TV. GWB had to step in and handle things ... but there was "posse comitatus" standing in his way. ObamaCare was never necessary and in fact was completely avoidable: do not propose the law. ObamaCare could have been reviewed by the D's ... they apparently chose not to do so ... and they had a year or two ... more if they needed the time. ObamaCare is stunning incompetence.

61 To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, youÂ’d have to have a heart of stone not to laugh at the unraveling of Obamacare.

First, the obligatory caveats. It is no laughing matter that millions of AmericansÂ’ lives have been thrown into anxious chaos as they lose their health insurance, their doctors, their money, or all three. Nor is it particularly amusing to think of the incredible waste of time and tax dollars that has gone into ObamacareÂ’s construction. And the still-unfolding violence that this misbegotten legislation will visit on the economy and our liberties is not funny either. This very magazine has been downright funereal about the brazen and unconstitutional seizure of one-sixth of the economy, and rightly so.

62 I went to look at the Hot Air item and noticed another, Boehner wondering if Obama's "fix" is legal. 89 Here's an interesting factoid: The Comintern for the Congress of Oriental Nations went to Baku on the Caspian to whip the Persians, Turks, Caucasians, and Arabs into shape: "The actual train trip to and from Baku was one of the first glimpses some of the foreign members of the Comintern were to get of just how rapidly the Bolshevik bureaucracy had adapted itself to its position as the new privileged class: expensive foods, rare wines, beautiful Caucasian prostitutes. According to a report attributed to John Reed, old Muslim women boarded the train and stripped their charges, lovely girls, some barely fourteen years old, before the delegates—these idealists dedicated to destroying the rotten structure of capitalism and building a better world. It all ended, said Reed, in a drunken sex orgy led by Radek, all in an armored train riding through a countryside whose population was starving. What seemed to disgust Reed was mainly that the girls had been paid for. Now if they had been fine Russian girls who had chosen to engage in sexual intercourse with the delegates, he said, that would have been something else." I read a book called Kremlin Wives. Many of them were young teens who were simply raped by Stalin's henchman. Apparently, if you were raped - your were married to the thug. Then again, a lot of primitive cultures do that and you can't call the ruskies anything but primitive no matter how many billions they have.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney seemed very unfocused at the late night press conference.  In spite of intense grilling by Major Garrett over reports of clouds of smoke coming out of the Oval Office, Jay Carney kept saying "dude...'

So the matter of the smoke is still an unknown mystery that needs an answer.

Posted by: non-purist at November 14, 2013 05:11 PM (afQnV)

Yes, there were pools, mostly for people at the poverty level and to cover children.  They were not well funded and most people who were eligible did not understand how to access them.

138 "two second terms since WWIl haven't been complete disasters: Ike and Dutch."

Reagan barely qualifies as successful in his second term.

He never really got a handle on rolling back the Great Society welfare state during his first term. He correctly prioritized instead working to roll back Soviet expansionism with rearmament and aggressive diplomacy.

By the later years of his second term, it was clear that the Soviet tide had peaked and was beginning to ebb rapidly. Reagan should at that point have been able to shift focus back to domestic affairs and to decisively undoing LBJ's awful legacy.

Instead, the self-created disaster of Iran-Contra got in the way. No serious attempt was ever possible to do anything other than preserving the Presidency from that vortex.

Note that domestic spending as a percentage of GDP was higher in January of 1989, when Reagan departed, than it was in January of 1981, when he arrived.

The California idiot goes all in :

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones said he's taken steps Thursday to allow more than 1 million residents with terminating insurance plans to keep them through next year.
Jones said he's asked Covered California to release insurers offering plans on the exchange from the requirement to cancel policies that don't comply with the health care overhaul.
"I've asked Covered California to take this action immediately so that health insurers are free then from this contract provision and can follow the president's request, and my request, that they allow their existing customers to renew their policies into 2014," Jones, a staunch supporter of the federal health law, said in a conference call from San Francisco.

Posted by: Justamom at November 14, 2013 02:08 PM (Sptt8)

191 On the front page of the NYTimes ' a contrite Obama' fixes the healthcare problem

(1. It's not a heath care problem. 2. It's not a fix. 3. I don't think 'contrite' means blaming someone else for the problem. 4. It's not a problem if it helps achieve the unstated goal of the destruction of the health insurance industry)

anyway to the quote

"The presidentÂ’s plan would apply only to people who have had their existing policies canceled. Those currently without insurance would not be able to buy the old plans. "

Question: If your insurance has been canceled, that means you don't have insurance, right? So if you are 'currently without insurance' that means you can't get your old policy back, right? However, Obama's 'fix' only applies to those who have been canceled. So if you haven't yet been canceled the fix doesn't apply to you.

Somehow, apparently there was a mistake in translation.

Fuck the NYT.  Let them substantiate with one - one - item the idiotic slander about the "botched" response to Katrina.

The state of LA and the city of NO "botched" their response - as would be expected from historically among the most corrupt and inept govt. entities in the US.  The feds?  Please, oh airheaded racist fascist dipshits of the NYT, name for me the things the feds should have done differently in Katrina, if we could use a time machine.

Name one fucking thing.  And intervening earlier to get the pathetic LA govt. out of the way doesn't count.

I still recall watching the spectacle of Katrina unfold on TV from overseas, in one of our war zones.  All of us had trouble believing it.  Not the actual situation in NO, which was just a flood and a predictably disastrous response by local and state incompetents.  But the national hysteria, the absurd criticism of Bush, the unbelievable slanders of racism being flung around.  Even the locals were asking us - in that careful, tentative way that America-loving smart people in fucked up countries have always done in my experience - what was going on.  Their English was good enough for them to be puzzled by the hysteria.

Someone in CA needs to sue him for aiding and abetting the breaking of federal law.

Posted by: Soona at November 14, 2013 06:09 PM (66ULQ)

Here is more:

Jones also said he has no authority in state or federal law to require Covered California or health insurers in the state to follow the new policy that President Barack Obama announced this morning, which would encourage insurers to allow individual policyholders to continue in existing plans through 2014.

Earlier, the Affordable Care Act required insurers to cancel those plans if they weren't compliant with its regulations, unless they were in effect in March 2010 — when the ACA was enacted — and hadn't been altered since.

It's unclear at this point if Covered California will, or can, follow Jones' recommendation or if insurers like Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Kaiser Permanente and Health Net will follow the insurance commissioner's suggestion that they notify individual plan policyholders of the opportunity to extend current plans beyond Dec. 31 and through 2014

I am stuck with the exchange but I've contacted BCBS and I should be able to get one of their silver plans from them without dealing with that site. It won't be as good as what I had. It will have higher deductible, co-pays, and yearly cap. The rates are about the same, but my guess is that in the future rates will skyrocket because younger, healthy people are smart enough to not buy into this bullshit and won't sign on. If they had insurance at all, they had insurance which was appropriate for their level of health, which according to TFG is substandard insurance. They took away our freedom of choice and tried to force us to buy more insurance than many people want or need. I was better off in the group pool that my employer had, it worked because it was large and had people of all ages. But that's over for me.

The NYTimes has it all wrong as usual.

First, Katrina was Exhibit A of how media bias and Democrat misdirection gets Republicans blamed for *DEMOCRAT* incompetence, in this case the mistakes and incompetence of New Orleans Mayor and Democrat Governor Blanco caused a lot of hardship for NO residents, and Bush took the rap for what they did and didnt do.

Heck of a job, media!

Further, they have the wrong analogy - Obamacare is to Obama what Iraq is to Bush. Iraq was Bush's signature decision and it was his most unpopular one, that became an anchor and a weight around the whole GOP as there was 'no way out' of a war and a task of rebuilding a broken country.

Obamacare is Obama's quagmire, his lie, his broken promise, and a signature example of the price of hubristic Governmental meddling.

The allied plan turned out to be to allow the Nazis to keep running things, arrest and prosecute the worst among them, and let the others stay if they kept their noses clean thereafter. Probably dead by now - but FFS D-Lamp, that mythology, too?  Katrina and disbanding the Iraqi Army together?

The IA self-disbanded.  You might have noticed that in the spring of 2003.  And de-Ba'athification was a given a minimum - and it wasn't even done ferociously enough.

The Sunnis of Iraq ruined and half-murdered the country for decades.  They continued to try to do this from 2003 onwards.  They were lucky they were not suppressed ruthlessly and essentially been removed from Iraqi life until they showed some resemblance to human beings.  The failure to punish the Sunnis for their behavior prolonged the problems in Iraq unnecessarily.

Instead of yelling at your radio, you might have tried spending a few years in Iraq, knowing some history, and thinking things through.  Or, not.  After all, WaPo and NPR-level idiocy is enough for most "smart" Americans, so .....

EVERYONE was a Nazi, just like the vast majority of Iraq was a Bathest. The people who knew how to run the country were the Bathests. Throwing them out of work and giving them a reason to attack and kill us was just stupid."

It was criminally stupid in particular to disband the Iraqi military without having any idea what all of those trained, disciplined men were going to do for a living other than take up arms against those who had just fired them.

There's an old quote from Jean Larteguy:

"I'd like to have two armies: one for display with lovely guns, tanks, little soldiers, staffs, distinguished and doddering Generals, and dear little regimental officers who would be deeply concerned over their General's bowel movements or their Colonel's piles, an army that would be shown for a modest fee on every fairground in the country. The other would be the real one, composed entirely of young enthusiasts in camouflage uniforms, who would not be put on display, but from whom impossible efforts would be demanded and to whom all sorts of tricks would be taught."

The USA should have kept the Ba'athists in charge of the army, and turned it into a lavishly well compensated, essentially ceremonial and toothless force of the sort Larteguy describes in his first example.

That would have been expensive, but yet cheaper than the incredibly expensive insurgency that developed after Saddam's army got the sack.

415 The Sunnis of Iraq ruined and half-murdered the country for decades. They continued to try to do this from 2003 onwards. Posted by: non-purist at November 14, 2013 07:07 PM (afQnV) Was. Not. Our. Problem. Was. Not. The. Reason. We Invaded. Getting entangled in a nation's internal social affairs was stupid, especially when it damages the PRIMARY MISSION. WMD, remember? To insure that Saddam could not destabilize the region by using Nuclear or Chemical (but especially Nuclear) Weapons of Mass destruction. Oppression of it's people is a fact of life in Most nations in the Middle east, and quite a lot of other places around the world. It's horrible, but the U.S. has no legitimate reason to play Lone Ranger to the world. WMD was a threat to our security, and therefore was a legitimate cause for us to act. Making life fair for the oppressed minority in Iraq? Not so much. The Damage that quagmire caused back home wasn't worth the entire goal of the Iraq war. We should have gotten in quickly and out quickly without trying to play referee between the Natives. Callous, but accurate. I'll bet you that in twenty years, the Sunnis will be back running everything again, and all our sacrifice on behalf of the Shias will have amounted to nothing.

I do think that having efficient and speedy trails for the most ruthless Baathists and continuing prosecution of any post war Iraqi officials that acted illegally might have worked.

Unfortunately, "speedy and efficient" are not in the US government lexicon anymore!

Trying to police Iraq's internal affairs caused domestic Damage to this country of which the Reacquisition of the Congress by the Democrats and the Ascendency of Barack to the Presidency were the very destructive and real consequences. Had we not attempted that folly, the nation would have been saved trillions of dollars and thousands of lives. There may also have been sufficient will left over to neuter Iran as well. Trying to police the conflict between Sunnis and Shias in Iraq may very well end up costing millions of lives as the result of a Nuclear Iran.

OMG. I had a roommate from Cinny more than 25 years ago and she brought some Graeters back with her when she went there for Thanksgiving. A few months ago, I was in a grocery store here in Milwaukee and what did I spot but pints of Graeter's - they sell it here now. I held out for a month, but it was in the back of my mind. Finally, I broke down and bought a pint of the peach ice cream. It's just as good as I remembered it being.
